Robert Harrop Yeti – From The Abominable Snowman 1967

Available to order while stocks last from www.robertharrop.com

A Limited Edition of only 225 figurines it will also come with a ‘Control Sphere’ which can be presented either on or off the piece.

“This thing that’s here, this evil, it will spread. It has to be stopped and I think I can do it.”

The TARDIS arrives in Tibet in 1935 and the Doctor visits the remote Detsen Monastery in order to return a sacred bell, the Ghanta, given to him for safe keeping on a previous visit. There he meets an Englishman, Travers, on an expedition to track down the legendary Abominable Snowmen or Yeti.

It transpires that the Yeti roaming the area are actually disguised robots, which scare away or kill anyone who approaches. The High Lama Padmasambhava, whom the Doctor met hundreds of years earlier on his previous visit, has been taken over by a nebulous alien being, the Great Intelligence, which has artificially prolonged his life and is now using him to control the Yeti by way of models on a chessboard-like map. The Intelligence’s aim is to create a material form for itself and take over the Earth.

Colemans been asking me the same. I,m going with trial, warriors with myrka if they scale down, greatest show or a complete pyramids. I think colin might get something to cover his era but the visitation has also had a mention and is a favourite.

With Hartnell being next my idea would be a Web Planet trio – Zarbi (any fragile areas could be done in pewter), Menoptera (not sure how they could do the wings tho’) and Venom Grub/Gun
Monochrome variants could also be done later by Harrops like other black and white era figures in the past.

It’s a one off zygon_invader. Was going to be too expensive for a run of larger TARDIS style boxs. The Ancient One should be in the Blue box again.

The numbers apart from Number 1, which is kept for shop, are random coleman. I,ve ordered late in the past and got under 100. Just luck of the draw. The fact you have one of the numbers is great.

Mine has just been delivered by DPD. (No text or email to advise it was on it’s way).
Unfortunately I have to say I’m a little disappointed with the figurine – legs and lower body just don’t seem right and top of it’s head seems too flat.
Really no need for the ball bearing “control sphere” far better display without this addition. Hope everyone else isn’t disappointed with it like I am.

    • the ergon

      May 18th, 2021 - 3:02pm

I think its a lovely figurine. looking at the detail and contouring, it looks very much like they use potters clay which is then lightly sprayed, occasionally glazed. I have to say i didn,t even notice the eyes on it at first. Next up that excellent ‘Ancient one’ figurine which i,ve been told is on sale the 25th June. Good luck with that.

    • Coleman

      May 18th, 2021 - 8:32pm

Hello Ergon, about a month ago on Facebook I asked Dan how they made their figurines.
He replied that the original sculpt is made of Monster Clay. ( A mix of potter’s clay but with a high content of wax for detailed sculpting). Then moulds are made from this original sculpt and a polystone powder mixed with resin is poured in them to make the figures we receive.

    • Coleman

      May 18th, 2021 - 8:45pm

Correction, a Marble stone powder mixed with polyester resin as a binding agent.
The resins purely to hold the marble powder together.
So infact the figurines we receive are Marble.

    • The ergon

      May 18th, 2021 - 10:09pm

Thats very informative, thanks coleman. A far cry from the polymer we use. It explains a lot why their castings are quite as unique as they are.

The only Dr Who items that havnt sold out on Harrops yet are the Voc Robot and the Cyberman Door. Just checked stock, theirs only ONE Voc and 13 Doors left, so it’s just a matter of time before they’ve no stock left at all.

Am I right in thinking that the Harrops pieces nearly always hold their value? Because I always think that if you can get most of your money back then it’s perfectly fine to buy something that’s purely decorative and just looks nice on the shelf. Yup, I’m trying to justify some future purchases to myself. And anyone else who might suggest I’m wasting money. (I want that Haemovore!)

I don’t buy the Robert Harrop models myself, but from everything I’ve seen and read, on this site, eBay etc, the models more than hold their value. In fact, they go up in value significantly.

It’s certainly not a waste of money if it’s something you want and brings you enjoyment. The models look great so I hope you are able to get your Ancient One.

They keep going up and up in value The Loiterer, so you won’t lose out. Buy them , and get enjoyment out of them Then if you ever decide to sell you’ll always get your money back and more besides.

I’d be interested to know if there’s a particular figure/s still genuinely regarded as the most prized or valued amongst collectors as I’m finding it increasingly hard to make sense of some of the prices being asked for on third party re-sale sites recently.

    • booboo

      May 5th, 2021 - 1:11pm

      Davros probably

    • Anonymous

      May 5th, 2021 - 1:06pm

It’s just about rarity Iain55. Not so much how nice a figure is or how popular the Character was.
For example the Alpha centuri, 1975 Cyberleader, monochrome Varga, Snowman and Cybershade were all made in very low numbers from edition sizes of just 100 to 150. Worldwide.
Therefore these are hard to come by on the secondary market and when they do they command the highest prices. Hope this helps?

    • Iain55

      May 5th, 2021 - 2:52pm

Yes a Davros recently went for the highest price that I’ve personally seen a Harrop go for Booboo.
I thought there was a 750 run on him but I see that it was 250.

Anon, thanks for the info re. the figures you mention.
Alpha’s mentioned a few times on the thread on the thread. It’s prob my fav so far too.
I’m appreciating my collection a little bit more now.

      May 5th, 2021 - 4:37pm

Davros and the genesis dalek ive seen occasioally but the cyberleader and alpha hardly ever now. I think those who own them appreciate their value as well.

    • 76TOTTERSLANE

      May 5th, 2021 - 8:15pm

I’m still after Davros and the Genesis Dalek. Can’t quite stomach the eBay prices at the moment though. Wish I’d got them at the time from Harrop. Luckily I bought Alpha Centauri, the Cybershade and the Snowman when they came out though. Phew!

    • Anonymously

      May 5th, 2021 - 9:39pm

I really want Harrop’s to issue a pewter Genesis Dalek. Would be so fantastic. Probably be expensive but less than the price of a painted one on eBay.

    • The ergon

      May 5th, 2021 - 10:22pm

I know what you mean, apart from figurines that had 300+ pieces( and they want£90+ for those), you would be paying £120 upwards. If the genesis dalek or davros have come up, its been £150-£200+.. if they were less i,d be scrutinising for damage. Prices for these i fear will just keep rising as newer pieces come out and they are getting more and more poular and not just collectors

    • Anonymous

      May 2nd, 2021 - 8:44pm

Yes, but Harrops were quite content to make the edition size 750 when they 1st started.
It’s only because demand wasn’t their originally that they started making smaller editions.
I’m sure if demand was their from the begining that they’d have been content knocking out 750 each time.

    • Doctor Mysterio

      May 3rd, 2021 - 12:11am

It still can be limited edition, Simon… Elevated prices later makes no more money for Harrop, why not issue 300 if they can sell them. Early releases were set at 750 I seem to recall. I was just making the point that some people only buy to sell later for profit.

    • booboo

      May 3rd, 2021 - 9:14am

The problem for Harrops is they are treading a very fine line between over and under producing.

The 750 editions were also sold to 3rd parties are there are probably many still of those out in the wild, Harrops had to reduce theirs over several sales before the eventually sold out.

Now the don’t have the Aardman licence they are quite a small set up and understandably now keep everything “in house” so even having 20-30 slow moving figures could tie up revenues.

They could probably go back to 250 now but a couple of figures with the number still haven’t sold out from some time ago showing they dont have 250 “completest” within their customer base.

    • Gord13

      May 3rd, 2021 - 1:27pm

Yes it is a real shame DM.

Having only been collecting for 18 months myself a lot of the prices on Ebay have increased dramatically recently.

I dread to think what sort of prices the hard to find figures like 1975 cyber leader, monochrome varga or Alpha would go for now, should any of them ever appear again!

People who have these are very lucky.

    • The ergon

      May 3rd, 2021 - 3:22pm

Didnt buy alpha originally but bought for just over £100 on ebay. If one were to sell i,d imagine 3 times that amount now. I was lucky but i would be very reluctant to sell. There were only 100 cyberleaders. I bidded for one over a year or so but lost out to someone who paid around £250 at the last bid.

    • Coleman

      May 3rd, 2021 - 5:30pm

Similar to you ergon, mine was around £100 on Ebay. (Quite awhile ago though)
Didn’t start collecting Harrops before the SWD.
Managed to get most of the rest either from Robert Harrops themslves or Ebay without them being too expensive.
I feel sorry for the new collectors though, some of the after market prices now are horrendous.

Hello Ergon, you’ve just replied to me, (Coleman). Bit gutted about missing this one. wasnt going to buy it originally, but it’s grown on me since I first saw the original Monster wax prototype.
You wouldn’t believe it was in stock when I went on their site this morning to buy it and noticed I wasn’t getting the usual price reduction. Checked Friends Of Harrop (It had run out this February and I hadn’t realised)
So went through the rigmarole to rejoin for the discount. Then finally went to purchase the Yeti and up came the dreaded SOLD OUT sign.
      Hows that for luck?
I suppose you managed to snag one, you usually order around midnight?

    • Anonymous

      April 30th, 2021 - 7:04pm

Normally with the 60’s figures Harrop also do a monochrome variant later, bit more expensive and smaller issue number but they are nice.

I’m guessing but I suspect they’ll be doing a monochrome variant for this Yeti as it sold out so quickly and also they did one for the Web of Fear Yeti variant.

I got it in early coleman, you have to when you,ve seen how the last half dozen or so have sold out more or less next day (Why didn,t you use your alias? Its been quiet on the coleman front and you are usually replying to comments left, right and centre but your back and thats the main thing). Sorry you missed out. i,m sure you will beable to pick one up if rather belated on Ebay. I know when The Axon creature went on i thought the site had crashed with people trying to bag one as my order struggled to get through and my broadband was down that week. So rang Harrops Direct a day or so before as a precaution and he put one to one side. Luckily my payment went through for. i wasnt prepared to chance it with The Yeti having already bought the web version. the interest in these are growing better to get in quick in future. The Ancient one won,t be around for long either.
I thought you were busy with one thing or another
      so didn,t call you out.
Incidentally, i hope we get the video soon (after this years B and M selection leaked again). There are some right corkers in thereif it turns out to be true.
