From ‘The Dominators’ 1968

Navigator Rago and Probationer Toba are two ruthless Dominators who proclaim their race to be the ‘Masters of the Ten Galaxies’. They arrive in their space craft on the peaceful planet of Dulkis, landing on the ‘Island of Death’, an old nuclear test site. Their spaceship absorbs the radiation of the island into its power reserves and the Dominators are intent on establishing an energy source by drilling into the planet’s crust. Using their Quark robots to enslave the inhabitants of Dulkis, they plan to fire rockets and a ‘seed device’ into the centre of the planet, thus creating a volcano that will destroy the planet and produce enough atomic energy for the Dominator ship to be fully powered.

The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe arrive in the TARDIS on another part of the island, believing they are to have a nice peaceful holiday. However, upon discovering the Dominator’s plans they must prevent the destruction of the planet and help the Dulcians fight back.

I decided years ago not to get into the Harrop figures. I have lots of things they’ve done over the years for stuff like Camberwick Green, Clangers, Bagpuss etc and love their work, but I just wasn’t taken on the humanoid figures. Something about them being a little squat and stocky. The monsters, where the scale they use doesn’t look as obvious, always looked much better, but I tend to be all or nothing in collections.

However, I have long admired their Quark figure. This week I decided I should go ahead and buy it or probably end up regretting it – especially as there was a low stock warning on the Harrop site. It arrived today and, my, what a beautiful thing it is!

Kevin Davies recently posted a photo of him spraying a Quark head silver at a convention and he said that the ends of the tips on the head were originally red. If they were red during filming on Doctor Who I don’t really care as the pale green used by Harrop just looks so *right*. The paintwork in general on the figure is stunning and I genuinely think this might be one of my favourite ever pieces of Doctor Who merchandise. If you’re on the fence about this one, don’t wait much longer.

Hello, Don’t know if you ever saw Dan’s post on Harrops Facebook, quite awhile ago now. But at the moment the Pewter figurines are not Economically Viable.
He said more could be made oneday in the future but as things stand at the moment it’s not possible.

Thanks Coleman for the info I don’t use Facebook so I never saw it

Yeah Zygon, he was basically saying the Pewter figures were expensive to make and prices for all the raw materials needed in production had gone up so much recently and because of the price of these figurines they only made a small Edition available, that they wouldn’t make any profit on them.
He didn’t say they wouldn’t ever make anymore though, he said “we are always monitoring the situation”.
It was a reply to someone asking why there had’t been any more Pewter figures recently.

DPD have delivered the Quark from Rob Harrop and it’s absolutely stunning and great addition to my Doctor Who collection, the figure is very detailed and is quite heavy when compared to Rago.

Was the head ok Alvin. I’ve heard theres a sticker on the inside of the Box lid warning you to handle the little Quark by its body Only.
Someone posted there figurines head arrived unattached.

Yeah, the head was fine, when I saw the sticker I decided to open the packaging from the bottom and push the foam packaging upwards so that I could remove the figure from the foam a lot easier as it was tightly packed.

Rago may not have sold out yet – after so many fans moaned for an increase in stock too but I’d still love a matching Toba piece , preferably armed with that superb Dulcian laser which featured in the serial.

After the Rago slow sell i cant see that ever happening popplewick. I feel this is The Dominators covered. Although a few Long shot choices could include an aridian, Drahvin or even The collector.

      Maybe The three who rule.

I think its time Harrops broadened its scope beyond the Who monsters. Id love to see the excellence of their Gerry Anderson vehicles to Doctor Who spacecraft and cars. Bessie and the Whomobile should certainly be high on Harrops list.

If Harrops had stuck with their normal amount theyd be more or less gone now but then of course people would once again be complaining there werent enough. Ironic we cant get two complimentary figures though when a certain other company thrives on churning out repainted stuff ad nauseum – and some fans ‘lap it up’ too .

Id love to see Who spaceships and vehicles at some point, even if that means a subscription company picking up where Eaglemoss left off but Harrops know their market and know what works or doesnt for them. Saying that Popplewick we,ve been lucky to get just around half a dozen or so releases a year and thats flat out and thats before they moved premises.

To get my most wanted i have had to advance down the 3D printed figurines avenue. Its costly though but can be very easily be achieved in resin with whatever you may have in mind.

Seriously been listing some Eaglemoss type Spaceships for 3D printing. I,d quite like The Who mobile, Bessie and jagaroth Spaceship. However, i,m not sure if the latter would make it through the post in one piece. A sontaran space pod is another.

I think its amazing how the painters at Harrops have achieved that translucent look of the quark’s spines – for me that’s what makes the figure stand out – previous versions have just gone for a flat white look . Its the spines which make this one stand out from the crowd.

I’ve heard it’s a trick of the light though Popplewick. I know it was mentioned awhile back on Harrops Facebook page. Someone asking if the Spines were made from a Transluisant material.
The reply was no, it’s just painted solid white with the green highlights.

Could this be the big chance for poor Rago to sell out? Might be a sudden interest for some to want both from the same story.

Still 55 of Rago aswell. I hope they sell soon, if not Harrops will reduce there Run again.
Then they sell out so fast it’s usually difficult to pick one up.

The quark will sell out coleman. 225 is an ample amount to produce for limited edition in my book and doctors aside i think they shoyld just stick to what they are great at, the monsters.
