Navigator Rago From ‘The Dominators’ 1968

“Dominators do not seek assitance. What we need we take”

Navigator Rago and Probationer Toba are two ruthless Dominators who proclaim their race to be the ‘Masters of the Ten Galaxies’. They arrive in their space craft on the peaceful planet of Dulkis, landing on the ‘Island of Death’, an old nuclear test site. Their spaceship absorbs the radiation of the island into its power reserves and the Dominators are intent on establishing an energy source by drilling into the planet’s crust.

Using their Quark robots to enslave the inhabitants of Dulkis, they plan to fire rockets and a ‘seed device’ into the centre of the planet, thus creating a volcano that will destroy the planet and produce enough atomic energy for the Dominator ship to be fully powered.

The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe arrive in the TARDIS on another part of the island, believing they are to have a nice peaceful holiday. However, upon discovering the Dominator’s plans they must prevent the destruction of the planet and help the Dulcians fight back.

    Hi
A few years ago I bought one of the Harrop edge sculptures CYBERMAN GOLD EDITION from Harrop direct. I can’t remember how much was and it’s not on my order history anymore. Does anyone know how much they were?
    Thanks

Just checked Stock again today and theirs still 60 left. Rago seems to be selling very slowly.

Might pick up when the quark is released. Although it may make Harrops think twice about putting out human faced adversaries in future. This might have sold quicker had it been, as it looked in b/w.
Especially given its not the best likeness. I think that might put salamander and The collector towards the back of the queue.

Is it just me who is getting an Adric vibe from this Dominator figure?

I can see what you mean, it’s the colour scheme. When I first saw it, the palette gave me an Alpha Centauri vibe.

Maybe they are all descended from River Fruits… 🙂

Looks like monday for mine shaun. It did say these two were going to be of a bigger scale than the others. Harrops seem to be the most reliable as things are at present and it helps being uk based. If only eaglemoss and character were. What number did you get?

Mine came this morning, Nice looking figure, they have put a lot of whethering on him that doesn’t really show up in the promos.

    • The ergon

      July 2nd, 2022 - 12:24pm

Yes the whethering would improve it coleman. I came across those b/w photos of the dominators yesterday and the sleeves did look a lot darker. Can we confirm these are the actual outfit colours?

Got mine today too! Unexpectedly because email said Monday before being updated.

Really pleased with this figure. Very nicely sculpted I think and nice to get a slightly more obscure character.

Not sure how accurate the colours are. The only colour photo that exists (I think) from the story is of the three regulars. There’s a colour design drawing of the Quarks but not Dominators. Maybe someone recalled the colours of the costume but possibly just an educated guess.

Did you get decent numbers coleman and Doug?

    • the Ergon

      July 2nd, 2022 - 9:38pm

Ive only been able to find one photo which has been colourised. The shoulderpad part of the costume is the mauve/yellowy colour but the sleeves still look a dark green, although that could be the lighting in that one stillshot. They must have had reference from somewhere written or otherwise.

Mine was 63. Thought it would be around that number. I noticed people were posting on Friends of Harrop yesterday that had the really low numbers in the Teens, Twenty’s and Thirty’s.

      July 2nd, 2022 - 10:36pm

Not really bothered about what number these are but mine was 105.

It is interesting regarding the colour of the Dominator. In the one genuine colour shot I’ve seen Zoe’s Dulcian costume has a red/pink colour scheme, and when you look at black and white shots where she appears with the Dominators, they could easily have the same colours. Colours can have quite specific equivalent grey scales, but I suspect the green sleeves (as it were) are a best guess. Both Warlord and Harlequin opted for that colour scheme for their painted versions.

I always thought it slightly odd that Eaglemoss did monochrome versions of the Zarbi and Mechonoid when there are colour references.

      July 3rd, 2022 - 1:35am

Yes odd doug but i like the variety. Underground toys /character did at least release both colour and monochrome in some of their packs but i think that was just limited to doctors and companions. It might be better if there were an option as with the first doctor and companion sets, but im not sure how many b/w units shifted to justify release further releases like that, if this collection is to continue. The way some are talking, we,ll be lucky to get to 220, let alone 250 but i remain optimistic. Ill be miffed if i dont get all those classics i want like the axon creature, krynoid and terileptil android. If not ive plenty of clay and plinths to keep me going although it would never be the same once this collection ends. I completely forgot about warlord and harlequin as well. Timelord tims default choice of figurines.

Just had my delivery. Quite pleased overall and despite the unlikeness it is something different. Itll be interesting to compare with the Eaglemoss version if that ever comes to pass. At least we have it in one form. I got number 80.

      June 27th, 2022 - 11:08am

Those are all great choices Bicky, especially the White Robot, I don’t think I’d be content without one of those in my collection. To be fair theirs only Two Villian designs in all of Dr Who I’ve never liked (Morbius Monster, Monoids) so apart from those, whatever Harrops make I would buy.

    • The ergon

      June 27th, 2022 - 12:44pm

I know you had a dislike for the morbius monster coleman but not the monoids.. i actually think its one of season 13ths triumphs along with sutekh, the zygon and kraals. I like the mish mash body parts idea in all its frankenstein inspired glory
The monoids were daft looking with their beatles haircuts and ridculous movements but its a story i have an affection for and has grown on me more over the years. Always makes me laugh and i still wonder how the monoids eat their bowls of fruit and instant potatoes.

      June 27th, 2022 - 1:08pm

Yeah ergon, I know everyone’s different and likes different things from Dr Who. I havnt a problem with that, I’m sure many fans love the Morbius Monster and the Monoids. It’s what makes Dr Who fans great, all of this Diversity.
But coming from an Art Background, the only subjects I was any good at in school was Art, Technical Illustration and Craft. (Also doing an A level Art Course). I just can’t get my head round those designs. (No lie I could have done better when I was 10).

67 left at time of writing, so it looks like Rago will hang around for awhile yet. Provisional numbers for the Quark was also going to be 250, but considering how this is selling i wonder if Harrops will revise the number down to 225 again?

Its a good representation of a Dominator but the fact it doesn,t look anything like Rago or the actor tends to put people off. People like their Who monsters and Robots more. It wouldn,t surprise me if they dropped back to 225 but then people are up in arms when they miss out.

      June 26th, 2022 - 6:50pm

      Hi both,

I’m quite pleased the edition number is a bit higher – means I got one of these unlike the Daffodil Auton!

I’m not usually much of a fan of the Harrop ‘house style’ of actor’s likenesses, but in this case I think they’ve caught it well. With the heavy makeup used on Ronald Allen as ‘Rago’, it didn’t look that much like his usual suave self in any case!

It’s quite surprising that in some cases, an extra 25 figurines makes the difference between an (almost) instant sell out and them hanging around for a while. I’m sure a Dalek or Cyberman would still disappear fast.

Hoping the Quark will be as easy to pick up! It will be interesting to compare it in hand with the old Product Enterprise ‘Classic Moments’ statue.

It doesnt look like ronald allan with or without make up but its a dominator and thats all that matters and he does have a worried expression on his face as though hes forgot to pay something. Would you not pay slightly over? There was one or two daffodil autons on ebay last i checked doug. Brand new.

I’d like to see an hieronymous ( mask on ) figure

    • the Ergon

      June 27th, 2022 - 9:18am

Hieronymous such a good choice sidney. Like omega it seems based on those strange greek theatre facemasks designs but works so well on a doctor who villain.

      June 27th, 2022 - 10:15am

      Hi Ergon,

There’s loads I could pick, but think the one I’d most like Harrop to do is the Collector from ‘Sun Makers’, one of my favourite stories and a character that’s never been done in any form.

Love the idea of a Heironymous one too! Lucky enough to have a copy of the mask taken from the original moulds by Steve Cambden and it is a lovely design, as you say like those ancient Greek masks.

    • The ergon

      June 27th, 2022 - 11:13am

Yes doug the collector is another good idea but again, with as you mention with Harrops ‘house style’, humans and humanoids arent there strongest and i dont think they would capture henry wolfes slimy supercilious turn as the collector but it would certainly make a unique figurine woth owning.
I have a deep rooted fixation on monsters from season 18 and most of the davison era which if im correct you dont share a fondness for but there are so many rich pickings. The visitation figurines as well as a foamasi and gundun robot/ tharil are the top of my most wanted at present but i wouldnt mind harrops occasionally delving into some of those from nu who, so as not to neglect any era.

I suppose Harrop are going more towards story collections eg Curse of Peladon, Tomb of the Cybermen etc. I must admit, I’m not as excited about the Dominator as I would be a monster, but it’s a bit different and adds to the collection. Please Harrops do a Gellguard to go with Omega!
