Monster Marvel Memories by Tim Quinn & Dicky Howett

Available to order from

Two icons from the comic book scene are reunited for a new book which details their work with Dr Who and the world’s biggest superheroes.

Monster Marvel Memories by Tim Quinn & Dicky Howett is a retrospective of the pair’s work bringing British-style humour to Marvel Comics.

Meeting in the 1970s, Dicky’s cartoon artistry was the perfect foil for Tim’s wizardry with words.

They quickly gained notoriety for wacky cartoon strips. At Marvel Comics they concocted madcap storylines involving the greatest super-heroes from Spiderman and Thor to X-MEN.

Monster Marvel Memories is produced by Moochin’ About Publications. Compiled, edited and designed by its resident artist Iman Kakai-Lazell.

The book is launched at Comic Con Liverpool on 21 and 22 May where Quinn and Howett will sign copies.

Monster Marvel Memories captures the best of their comic book work over more than two decades with Marvel and companies both sides of the Atlantic.

One of the longest running strips from the pair was their Doctor Who spoof that ran in Marvel’s Doctor Who Magazine for 15 years. Dicky: “I must have drawn Dr Who more than 700 times!”

Tim Quinn, 68, from Liverpool, said: “We had a blast working for Marvel Comics. We were churning out comic strips at an alarming rate. This is the first time we have taken a step back to look at that body of work.

“It’s great to be teaming up with Dicky again after all these years. It’s fantastic to see those old strips, many of which we had completely forgotten, brought to a new audience.”

Dicky Howett, 77, from Essex, said: “Marvel was such a creative company with new ideas exploding off the page every single day. We certainly turned out a lot of comic strip pages during those years, not only for Marvel but for many other publishers in both the UK and US.”

Also featured in the book are the pair’s memories, photos and memorabilia from this heady period.

The tome also contains a never-seen-before poem specially written by Marvel legend Stan Lee on ‘How To Be a Super-Hero’. Copies of the book will also include a free comic book featuring the pair’s take on Doctor Who’s Dalek World.

Monster Marvel Memories is 176 pages of Dicky Howett cartoons ( Dr Who? Earth 33 1/3rd, Fantastic 400, Hulk The Menace, Whoopee Comic, Men Only, Acne Comic, Smut Comic, in fact just about the lot!) with Tim Quinn’s writing plus photos and memories of the 1970 80s and 90s as it effected the pair of us and indeed the magazines we worked on and were fired from! Limited print run 500 or so copies on high quality paper (bit like Izal) Sold a bundle at the latest Liverpool Comicon. Going fast!

Monster Marvel Memories is restricted to 500 copies only. Apart from the ‘free’ Dalek comic, the content is mostly Marvel Comics UK. The content of the hardback It’s Even Bigger On The Inside is greater than the cheaper reprint paperback version. Again, the print runs of both was 500 each. Few copies remain for sale, although on eBay I managed to buy of hardback signed copy of It’s Even Bigger……. for £10. Bit lucky there.

      Hey, Dicky.

I think they need to change the press relese on this one to make it a bit clearer as to what’s in the book as people are evidently confused.

@bryan, is there any difference in content between the hardback and paperback?

I’ve got the paperback, but that only cost me cover price back in the day.

Not that I can tell.Print quality seems better in the Hardback but that could just be the overall feel of the HB.

Its even bigger on the inside compiles both the Fun Book and Bigger on the inside plus some bits and bobs. But it was made by Miwk Publising in 2015. Top Quality books from cover to cover. Not rare as such just expensive when you see one.

This is not the same book. The Bigger on the Inside above is just illustrative, the book is the B&W cover … it’s not just their Doctor Who stuff in this one.

Is this their story or a collection of the workm or both? I adored the Dr Who stuff in the 80s and the fun book! I’d love to have it all in one place

They did a beautiful Hardback book for 25 years, not sure how much else there is to add. It’s a Tenner on Amazon, PB is silly money now. HB is much nicer.

They also did a Dr Who Fun book. Lots of cheapish copies on Ebay. Maybe the expensive one you saw is a rogue seller trying his chances. But also, there is a book called ‘Its Even Bigger on the Inside’, and that looks expensive!
