Master Replicas Figurine Collection First Doctor’s Tardis

The TARDIS made its debut in the first Doctor Who story ‘An Unearthly Child’. The idea of travelling through time and space in what looked like a Police Box was revolutionary. The exterior TARDIS prop wasn’t an exact replica of a real Police Box.

It was designed by Peter Brachacki and was a little shorter and narrower than the real thing and didn’t have any door handles. The first version gained a new lamp in the second season but remained otherwise unchanged until the Fourth Season.

This model was built by Gavin Rymill. It is 1:21 scale (to go with The Doctor Who Figurine Collection) and stands 130 mm tall to the top of the lamp.

Isn’t it a bit odd to go to market with an “inferior” product to show and then try to sell that product? This isn’t Dyson with a prototype we’re talking about, but long established techniques.

It’s not great for Gavin Rymill’s reputation, either. The man is a very accomplished creative I have an enormous amount of respect for.

DW fans are by far the most detail obsessive of any fandom. I know, I’ve been one for decades. Saying details like windows will be fixed later doesn’t inspire confidence in a new product line.

I don’t want to be negative about product that’s probably made by a small company, but there’s something about these models (the prototypes, at least) that reminds me of novelty birthday cakes. As if the windows have been stuck on and pushed in, slightly bulging everything else a little.

As others have mentioned, there’s just something not quite “right” about the lines.

One thing I can see is someone on Ebay making a nice little sideline in St John stickers.

They have said the windows were a mistake and will be put right on the production models.

If they can’t get the saint johns ambulance sign they should just do a white circle (small enough scale to justify lack of detail) or do a TARDIS that doesn’t have it, i.e. the TARDIS from the War Machines to the Faceless ones.

Because of there being nothing there it feels a bit incomplete, and therefore I’m gonna pass on this one (and this was the only one i was considering getting, the others are nice but I’m not made of money)

How much will each TARDIS be though? It’s £89 to join their club alone.

And can we get a reduction if the window stickers are as wonkily situated as the prototype pics?

To be fair Bobby the windows in the prop were often wonky!

It looks like the windows are separate pieces pushed in from the inside. Separate clear plastic perhaps?

I can see it now, booboo, ta. The stickers go into a little recess that may be a little deeper than really needs be. (Though why on earth they would advertise their product with decals so badly applied… it doesn’t inspire confidence…)
