Figurine Collection Magazine Issue 193 The Chameleons

Available to order from www.forbiddenplanet.com

The Doctor Who Figurine Collection part 193 features a Chameleon from the 1967 Second Doctor adventure ‘The Faceless Ones’.

When the TARDIS lands at Gatwick Airport in 1960s Earth, Polly witnesses a murder, then both she and Ben vanish. When Polly reappears she claims not to recognise her friends. Looking for clues, the Doctor and Jamie investigate Chameleon Tours, whose package holidays seems to be one-way trips.

Who are the faceless ones, and what hideously deformed creatures are involved in the operations being conducted at the airport medical centre?

It looks fantastic but I would have much preferred a figurine based on the original design rather than the animation.

A nice figure for what it is but like others, I would have much preferred the tv version even if the colours would have to have been Imagined. The originals were much more disturbing than these ‘lizard-like’ versions in my opinion.

Besides which, I just can’t see the logic in giving a race literally known as ‘The Faceless Ones’ faces!

I,ll buy this just to have a chameleon in the collection but i am less than enthralled we couldn,t have had the TV version. I know there are limited shots but the decision was taken a bit lightly in this case.

Yes ‘Which do we run with in terms of popularity’? ‘What do you think animated or Original?’ The animated version on the cover seemed to suggest this was going to be first choice. Classic core fans were destined for disappointment. The popularity of the DVD/Blu-Ray wins.

The animation wouldn’t exist without the original so I think the original should of been chosen. I hope they don’t make this same mistake in the future but I will say that I am happy to finally have a chameleon in the collection and the figure does look great but the original should be so much better. Perhaps a original chameleon could be release in the future hopefully

This is like saying “The Power of the Daleks” is missing so let’s completely redesign the Daleks. There’s still reference material there so you clearly just wouldn’t, shame.

Let’s look at this with hope:
Dr Stu has said there was an image in the monster vault book, and as I don’t own it I don’t know if it is black and white or colour (probably b&w). We know Eaglemoss does b&w monster as colour on the front of the mag, so maybe this is a placeholder while they colourise the photo and work it into a better background?

I’ve a feeling it’s the actual cover and the figurines going to be the animated version.
I’m fine with it, an animated version is much better than no version at all.

    • Doctor Stu

      January 7th, 2021 - 11:42pm

The pics in colour and quite HD, I think it was done by the same artist who does the high quality images for the Doctor Who TV website character and monster guides. The book is definitely worth getting, really well made, high quality and there’s lots of extra information and facts in there that aren’t told to you on screen. It’s like the sort of world building the Star Wars information guides give you where the random pink Alien has a whole backstory and a bunch of cool information about themselves

I think it must be the animation version. Why else use the animation cover? There are enough photos (telesnaps admittedly) to be able to do an original and there are good quality images for a cover so I do think this will be the animated version. Which is fine.

There’s a clear HD image of these in the monster vault book that was released recently, couldn’t they use that as reference for the face instead of animation

Looking forward to this one. If the cost is in sculpting maybe a variant in paint finish could allow both animated and real versions. In the Alien/Predator range by Eaglemoss they did a version based on the video games that was a repaint of the standard figures. Could do animated box set with repainted versions, like Colin Baker in blue coat.

I really hope the Chameleon figurine is the televised version and not the animated version.
However one animated figure I would hope to have, although very unlikely to be done, is a Viperox. I think it would make a fantastic special issue. (Could even be a set with an animated version of the 10th Doctor and Cassie).

Great they are doing this figurine but I agree with other here and hope they can follow how they originally appeared on screen rather than the animated ‘reimagining’. There is one good photo reference for the hands and face at least.

It’s similar to when they fixed mistakes for the DVD releases, which effectively replace the original versions as first screened. These are old programmes ‘warts and all’ and should I think be kept as such. Fine to have alternative special editions as long as the original is the default version. More problematic when the original has been wiped but I think I’d still prefer to see the TV version if possible.

Same with the Macra if they do one. Again there is only one good photo reference but colour footage exists from Shawcraft.

Agree with JL that I would love to see a Krarg and at least good original footage exists of one rather than the shadowy animated versions.

I wonder, if they got round to doing these particular figurines, if they’d do the original or animated versions of the macra, seaweed creatures and Krarg, I’d definitely like to see the macra and Krarg one day, I hope the collection continues long enough for these to happen! I also wonder what our next special edition will be after melkur, a rill, axon, drashig, krynoid, fendahl, mara, cleaner, saturnyne and weeping angel statue of liberty are top of my list for future releases.

On another note, hope we get some more consoles announced soon, would also love if they one day tackle the exteriors too!

    January 6th, 2021 - 3:59pm

…I really hope they’re not using the animation as a base. The animation takes an artistic license to The Chameleons with the clothes they where to the the fact they have the Chameleons obvious eyes & mouths (even though the story is LITERALLY CALLED THE FACELESS ONES) and gave them some quite out there campy colours. I prefer the purple skin colour seen on the DVD cover rather then the green skin.

I hope they don,t opt for the animated version aboard the chameleon ship but there aren,t many clear telesnaps of this. Might have preferred the huddled version seen at the end of episode one where you see more of the face in those closing seconds but that would prove to be a less dramatic choice i suppose.
