NOOOOO. This is like Red Dwarf Blu Ray releasing all over again. Declare Blu Ray but leave essentials like the specials and documentaries in DVD format. The BBC are not alone in this regard however. Warner Brothers did this in the Blade Runner 5 disc bluray set, except it’s actually a 3 Bluray disc set and 2 DVD’s where amazing unreleased cut scenes are left in low resolution. Like the Doctor Who Pat Troughton fan I am, I dived for this release but it’s annoying to learn that a “The Collection” edition is coming out for Season 6 as I’m collecting that set also. Oh well, guess I’ll enjoy the new restoration in colour and sell it when the Blu Ray Season 6 collection set comes out. At least I can sell my DVD set of the War Games when it arrives as I’ll have a double up now.

Well, same as the tv movie blu ray the extras disc is just the dvd one. When it comes to being released again the extras will be on a blu ray disc

I’m a bit baffled here. Wasn’t most of your issues with this release known months ago? Seemed pretty obvious that it was going to be a dvd/blu ray hybrid same as the previous daleks in colour release. It wasn’t exactly hidden that it was a 4 disc release either or 3 of them were dvd. It was listed in the bottom left hand corner of the back under the specs.

There is no “the collection edition” of war games in colour. It has been wildly known that war games in colour is getting included in season 6 but it will most certainly be just the 2025 blu ray edition with extras from that release and potentially some new extras. There won’t be any new restoration in colour different from the stand alone release. There simply isn’t the budget on the collection sets to do colourisation to the level war games in colour got. The only new restoration war games will get is the episodic b and w episodes.

As for it containing DVDs well the budget for extras for newly broadcast tv (which war games in colour technically was) is considerably smaller in 2025 compared what it used to be. The VAM budget simply wasn’t there to restore the rest of war games to do a blu ray disc for those 10 eps. Plus there seems little point going to the expense of a new blu ray master of the bonus disc when they would need to spend again on another one when season 6 comes out. The clear main hook for this release is war games in colour. They could have easily just included the blu ray disc but at least they gave us the black and white episodes and extras.

This release is aimed at people that either can’t wait on the season sets or don’t buy the collection sets. Pretty much the same as the animated releases which will certainly be included in some form. It was never going to be a stand alone release forever.

No the blu ray restoration of the black and white version is being saved for the collection. Plus newly broadcast shows which war games in colour technically is didn’t get allocated a huge bonus features budget.most newly broadcast shows don’t in 2025. Definitely not high enough of a budget to restore the remaining 2 and a half hours for blu ray. Far cheaper to just use the 3 2009 dvd discs with a new label on it

It would have been better to have watched this in colour during the 90s…
