The Five Doctors, made and transmitted as a 90-minute special in 1983, was the 20th anniversary outing for the good Doctor, seeing the incumbent Peter Davison joined by previous incarnations Richard Hurndall (standing in for the deceased William Hartnell), Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. The latter declined to return in person so soon after he had left, so was represented by some footage from “lost” story ‘Shada’.

The music was composed by Peter Howell at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. It was, in accordance with normal practice at the time, mixed in mono, so is presented here within a subtle mono-compatible stereo image. The sound effects for the story were by Dick Mills, but Peter was anxious to include the Death Zone atmosphere as part of the score so – with Dick still working on a previous project for a while – created that effect himself. The story would later be edited into the standard 4 x 25m episode format for syndication, for which Peter provided some additional “cliff hanger” cues.

In 1995, producer Paul Vanezis was contracted by BBC Video to produce a “Special Edition” of the story, extended beyond the original length (as determined by the transmission slot) and featuring updated visual effects. It was also decided to mix it in Dolby Surround (later updated to full 5.1 surround for DVD) so Peter Howell was called in to rework the music. Both versions of the score are presented complete on this release.

I really want more Classic Who soundtrack releases. For future releases I can see the following being released:

. A re-release of Heathcliff Blair’s adaptation of Dudley Simpson’s music for The Ark in Space, Genesis of the Daleks, Planet of Evil, Pyramids of Mars and The Brain of Morbius.

. Terror of the Zygons soundtrack by Geoffrey Burgon.

. The Seeds of Doom soundtrack by Geoffrey Burgon.

. The Daleks’ Master Plan soundtrack by Tristram Cary.

. The Mutants soundtrack by Tristram Cary.

. The Silurians by Carey Blyton.

. The Sea Devils by Malcolm Clarke.

. Death to the Daleks by Carey Blyton.

. Revenge of the Cybermen by Carey Blyton.

Even stories which used stock music, they released some before and if they started again than I would like:

. The Edge of Destruction soundtrack.

. The Web Planet and Galaxy 4 soundtrack by Les Structures Sonores.

    . The Space Museum soundtrack.

    . The Time Meddler soundtrack.

. Mission to the Unknown soundtrack (this could be released along with The Daleks’ Master Plan soundtarck as Mission’s soundtrack is only made up of synchro-stings by Trevor Duncan).

. The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve soundtrack by Pierre Arvay.

    . The War Machines soundtrack.

. A re-release of The Tenth Planets soundtrack.

    . The Highlanders soundtrack.

    . The Moonbase soundtrack.

. The Faceless Ones soundtrack (even though we still can’t identify some of the stings and the slow music for the Chameleons).

. Tomb of the Cybermen soundtrack.

. Enemy of the World soundtrack by Béla Bartók.

. The Web of Fear soundtrack.

. The Wheel in Space soundtrack.

    . The Mind Robber soundtrack.

    . Inferno soundtrack.

Also could we have the soundtrack’s of the stories composed by Dudley Simpson or any other music composer recreated as the original music tapes are lost. Stories like:

. An Unearthly Child / Marco Polo / The Keys of Marinus / The Aztecs / The Sensorites / The Reign of Terror / Planet of Giants / The Dalek Invasion of Earth / The Romans / The Crusade / The Chase / They Myth Makers / The Celestial Toymaker / The Savages.

. The Underwater Menace / The Macra Terror / Evil of the Daleks / The Ice Warriors / Fury from the Deep / The Seeds of Death / The Space Pirates / The War Games.

. Spearhead from Space / The Ambassadors of Death / Terror of the Autons / The Mind of Evil / The Claws of Axos / Colony in Space / The Dæmons / Day of the Daleks / The Curse of Peladon / The Time Monster / The Three Doctors / Carnival of Monsters / Frontier in Space / Planet of the Daleks / The Green Death / The Time Warrior / Invasion of the Dinosaurs / The Monster of Peladon / Planet of the Spiders.

. Robot / The Ark in Space / The Sontaran Experiment / Genesis of the Daleks / Planet of Evil / Pyramids of Mars / The Android Invasion / The Brain of Morbius / The Masque of Mandragora / The Hand of Fear / The Deadly Assassin / The Face of Evil / The Robots of Death / The Talons of Weng-Chiang / Horror of Fang Rock / The Invisible Enemy / Image of the Fendahl / The Sun Makers / Underworld / The Invasion of Time / The Ribos Operation / The Pirate Planet / The Stones of Blood / The Androids of Tara / The Power of Kroll / The Armageddon Factor / Destiny of the Daleks / City of Death / The Creature from the Pit / Nightmare of Eden / The Horns of Nimon / Shada.

They’re meant to be doing a minimum of one soundtrack per Doctor, we’ve had stories from 1, 2, 5 and 7 released from memory so hopefully some from your list get released soon.

If there are supposed to be 1 story soundtrack per Dr, why does the 2nd Dr have 2 being The Invasion and The Krotons?

      February 19th, 2019 - 7:52pm

The one release per Doctor limit is for the current wave of soundtracks (consisting so far of the recent sondtrack releases of The Daleks, Survival, The Invasion, and The Five Doctors)

The Sun Makers has existed, and is coming soon!

Other stories on your list of missing scores, but that do actually exist are:

      Fury from the Deep
      The Seeds of Death

They could also do a The Smugglers soundtrack, since it would literally be just the TARDIS materialising and dematerialising effects!

Always surprised why someone would buy the Vinyl version with 10 or more tracks missing over the expanded CD version…

Lovely cover. The only thing I would do is have the same colours on both sides (oranges, yellows and pinks)

The artwork I would imagine is the same guy as who did the recent Doctor Who: The Collection Season 12 artwork. His use of colours and the logo are very nice and have a [no pun intended] timeless feel that I think won’t age over time.

The cover art for this is done by Clayton Hickman, long-time Doctor Who DVD range designer and all-round design genius. Check him out on twitter, he’s got a redbubble shop with loads of oblique Doctor Who designs (and more besides on it).

He didn’t, however, do the Season 12 set. That was done by Lee Binding, who recently did the Series 1 and 2 steelbooks 🙂

Ths cover is just a horrible mess, they’ve even manged to make the logo look more bland then usual.

How? It’s beautiful, and the logo works in black for once, as it stands out as the only thing in black.

    August 3rd, 2018 - 8:05pm

    That cover is so beautiful.
    That tracklist is so amazing
this would look nd sound stunning as an LP Vinyl

can we really do 80 tracks on one CD, i thought it was pushing it a bit.

this is a pre order as soon as Silva Screen catch up.
