Doctor Who The Faceless Ones Steelbook – update

Available to order from www.zoom.co.uk and www.zavvi.com

All formats are available to order from www.amazon.co.uk ( (Steelbook delayed)

Doctor Who’s missing serial The Faceless Ones will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and SteelBook on 16th March 2020.

BBC Studios is pleased to announce that The Faceless Ones will be the next animated Doctor Who release, filling a gap in missing content. Following the success of The Power of the Daleks, Shada and The Macra Terror, The Faceless Ones will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and as an exclusive steelbook next year.

The Faceless Ones is the mostly missing eighth serial of the fourth season of Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in six weekly parts from April to May 1967. Starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, the story concerns a sinister race of identity-stealing aliens known as the Chameleons.

Only two of the six episodes are held in the BBC film archives with snippets of footage and still images existing from the other four. Fortunately, off-air recordings of the soundtrack also still exist, making the animation of a complete serial possible once again.

The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour and high definition and will include the following exclusive special features:

  • Photographic reconstruction of the story, including surviving footage of episodes 1 & 3
  • Audio commentary on episodes 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6
  • ‘Making of the animated series’
  • Camera script PDF’s
  • Surviving film fragments from the story
  • x5 ‘Easter Egg’ surprises
  • Coming Soon Fury from the Deep trailer

Lovely Animations. One slight complaint, It’s a shame that the reconstruction on the bonus disc, blu ray versions and DVD ,are quite blocky, due to the compression, not because of the tele snaps, particularly, but when they go to an actual paused part of an existing episode then back to a snap the picture is too noisy. If it was just the tele snaps and clean photos, you wouldnt get the square blocks. I know its a bonus disc and i loved both the blu ray limited edition and the DVD, which i purchased to support the range . Here’s to a lot more Animations to come.

    Mine came today, watching now

Anyone else notice in the production notes it says Anne Marie Walsh directed the previous year’s Wheel in Space, that suggests they have done the whole thing rather than just an extract

Well that’s a good day courtesy of Amazon.

The steel book popped through the letter box – all in good fettle, no dents or nicks.

A little light relief for our family whilst in the 14 day quarantine period.

Hope those other collectors who got theirs today also enjoy the title.

If you’d said 5 years ago these missing stories would be animated I wouldn’t have believed you.

Having said that, from Power to Macra to this the animation keeps improving.
But the original source material feels weaker each time. I’ve watched Power several times and it is still fantastic despite the much more basic animation. This has its moments but (unlike Power) I can’t imagine wanting to stick it on again as soon as I get to the end.

Ultimately though, it is just great that we have this way to enjoy these missing stories.
Thank you and roll on Fury (and please do Evil)

Thank you for taking the time to contact the team.

The Faceless Ones stock has been shipped to Amazon but it had been held up due to a system issue. We recommend contacting Amazon for an update regarding delivery as we have no held stock.

Because of COVID-19 and until at least the 5th of April, Amazon is electing to “temporarily ban shipment creation” for goods that don’t fall under baby, health and household, beauty and personal care, groceries, industrial and scientific, and pet supplies categories.

The standard and dvd versions are still available from Amazon. A third party Amazon seller currently has two steelbooks left, but they are charging £36 approx and they would not arrive for customers until next week. Zoom is out of steelbook and standard versions, and only have dvd versions available, though one would imagine they would have standard versions available again soon. Zavvi has standard and dvd versions available. HMV have standard and dvd versions online, but are out of stock for steelbooks (of course)-though it is possible they may have all versions in store, depending on location.

I ordered mine a couple days after announcement on Amazon. Also needing it shipped to New Zealand, are there any other places you guys know that are still in stock, Amazon seems to not have any clear indication of when its coming and do have problems delivering to Australia and NZ after recent GST laws over here

From what I’ve read in the body of a BBC news item and a quote from an Amazon document on a 4k UHD Blu Ray site that I follow, that Amazon are suspending receipt of ‘non-essential’ product from suppliers and market place sellers to allow more stocking space in their warehouses for essential goods for households in this difficult period.

Seems like an interesting community spirit move.

Anyone else seen the same information?

But do we class our Doctor Who Blu Ray/DVD/The Collection products non-essential? *grin*

Btw, I can’t go to HMV to pick up this steelbook (and cancel the indefinitely postponed Amazon order) as our family is currently self isolation for 14 days since one of our family members has high temperature and a cough… Probably all gone when I can visit our local HMV… lol.

its confusing, i read in one place it means only 3rd party seller stock not their own?

      March 18th, 2020 - 1:17pm

Hi booboo, yes you could be right, it’s hard to tell with all the fast changing, hour by hour, news updates. What’s accurate and what’s not keeps changing too..

But the term ‘suspending delivery from ‘suppliers’ of non-essential products…’ was definitely used from what I read. Let’s hope that really means only 3rd party market place seller stock.

Anyway, let’s all stay safe and enjoy our Doctor Who viewing.

      Thanks

The Gaurdian says “Online retail giant Amazon is stopping sellers from sending non-essential items to its UK and US warehouses until 5 April, to make space for vital items needed by its customers during the coronavirus outbreak.”
