BBC Studios announce Doctor Who: The Evil of the Daleks Animation, due for release on 27th September 2021.

BBC Studios have announced the new Doctor Who: Evil of the Daleks animation starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor and can reveal artwork alongside a sneak peak of what’s included in the release.

The announcement lands on the 53rd anniversary in which the last episode of the original version was aired. The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and a Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook from 27th September 2021.

The Evil of the Daleks is the mostly-missing ninth and final serial of the fourth season of the British series Doctor Who, which originally aired in seven weekly parts from 20th May to 1st July 1967.

Following the success of the existing animations, The Evil of the Daleks fills another gap in the missing Doctor Who content lost in the purge of the BBC archive soon after the programme’s original transmission. However, audio-only recordings of all seven episodes have survived and have been used here to create a brand new fully animated presentation of this lost classic, featuring the original surviving second episode.

The Doctor (Patrick Troughton) stars alongside his travel companion Jamie (Frazer Hines) in this recreation in which the TARDIS has been stolen. The story unfolds as the Doctor and Jamie set out to find the missing time machine, bringing them face to face with a very old enemy – the Daleks, who have a new masterplan to conquer the universe. The Daleks force the Doctor to help them on their quest to ‘humanise’ themselves into deadlier living weapons. This particular story is notable for introducing the Doctor’s new companion Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling), first seen in the surviving second episode, and also for presenting the Dalek Emperor.

The three disc release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy The Evil of the Daleks, available in either colour or black and white.

The release will include:

  • Remastered Surviving Original Episode 2
  • Telesnap Reconstructions – 6 episodes
  • Audio Commentaries
  • Audiobook, with recorded commentary by Tom Baker
  • Making Of
  • Photo Gallery

AnneMarie Walsh, Director of the 2021 production said “It’s been a privilege to work on this fantastic story with such a brilliant team – thanks to the fans for supporting our work, I hope you all enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it!”

Now watched disc one. Great fun. I watched the animation with the original episode then watched the animated eps 2 separately. It’s very good and I have to say it improves the enjoyment of this story immensely. The audio version is fine but it’s heavy going, being able to actually watch it made it much easier to follow. Right. Colour version tomorrow, then reconstruction and extras Wednesday I think. Great stuff

just watched episodes 1-3 in B/W and its the kind of 2D animation i prefer for these releases. Its similar in style to The faceless ones but without the easter egg stuff or at least i havent seen anything to distract. The body movements are what i,ve come to expect but we dont have the elongated arms like we had with fury. They should keep the 3D stuff on the back burner until they,ve ironed out the problems there. I also like those clear background shots which compensate for any little deficiencies. Its rather good and it will suffice for now. I,ll save the extras for this evening.

I watched the whole thing in colour. Absolutely loved it. Think it’s better than faceless ones and also on par with the macra terror. It’s an animation that really suits being in colour. The daleks look better than they did in power especially with the usage of the dalek eye. The mix of 3d daleks and 2d character model works quite well. The absolute highlight is the dalek battle in ep 7 which is fantastic but the establishing shot of the house in ep 2, the fight in ep 4 and the dalek train in ep 5/6 are all fun to see. Purists might not like how some of the camera angles probably wouldn’t have been used in the original production but in absence of the missing episodes being returned this animated 2021 production with surviving episode 2 is going to be the best way of experiencing the story

Yes i liked the panning down and around the mansion was good also to see tobys death scene, the daleks filing through after jamie and kemel whyllst searching for victoria is how i almost realised it. And the destruction of the emperor was also a real highlight. Extras in an hour and ill give colour a try tomorrow. B/w always gets viewed first.

Only a week to go until ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ DVD release! I wonder, if they ever do ‘The Daleks Master Plan’ animation, would that be a six disc release? Colour animation over two discs (6 episodes apiece), black and white animation over two discs, plus photo recon (with surviving episodes) over two discs. Add any extra’s as well, then I can’t see it being any less than at least six discs.

I’d expect a six disc release as two parts. They need to recoup costs and a single release would probably be prohibitively expensive. Plus, if they release as two parts they’ve got a guaranteed market for the second part.

I’d not be surprised if Mission were included with Mythmakers, to keep it in chronological order and whet appetites for DMP. Then again, they could include it with DMP and even go for a three part release.

Can’t wait for this!. I’ve been wanting to see this in full since I was 5yrs old watching episode 2 over and over on Daleks the early years vhs back in the early 1990s. The only negative I will say for all the recent Animations, the dvd artwork isn’t as nice as the original dvd releases or the amazing vhs covers of yester year. Feels like they could have done a bit more.

Maybe bbc studios will be tackling abominable after they finish off evil. It’s a bit unexpected for sure as most of us expected abominable to be done by big finish creative. I know fury had its issues but they have only done 1 2d animation for the range. I do feel they need a chance to improve upon things. It would be a bit hard to do if they don’t get more work. Also bbc studios can’t do everything unless you want to wait another 20 years for the lot

If Galaxy 4 Episode 4 has come back, I could see that being the justification.

That would be 50% of the story existing. Doesn’t the rule stipulate that if the amount that exists of the story is under 50% it’ll be animated?

    • Anonymous

      July 6th, 2021 - 4:28pm

No, it depends on sets, costumes and the number of characters. Galaxy 4 has limited elements compared to say, the crusade.

    • Gordon

      July 6th, 2021 - 5:44pm

The mirror mentioned in their article that the whole thing would be animated in colour and black and white so I suspect even if ep 4 is back it will get animated. The sets costumes and characters are used over all 4 eps anyway (bar the ending of ep 4) so it’s not like it would add that much additional time creating assets specifically for those episodes

To clarify, when I initially mentioned about 50% being animated, I meant if the amount of episodes that were missing in the story were 50% that only those two episodes would be animated.

    • Anonymous

      July 8th, 2021 - 1:50pm

Even if that was the rule, crusade would still cost considerably more for two episodes than it would to animate certain 4 part stories.

I should imagine the 3D animation of Web of Fear is testing the audience before embarking on more detail-heavy serials (like the historicals) in the same style.

    • Anonymous

      July 8th, 2021 - 5:13pm

Hope not. The 3d animation is awful. Stick to the reliable 2d.

    • Anonymous

      July 10th, 2021 - 3:41pm

I’d hardly call the 2D animation “reliable.”

    • Anonymous

      July 12th, 2021 - 1:57am

Anonymous you seem determined to push 3d. 2d is “reliable” in terms of costs, ease of production and fan response. The vast majority of fans are happy with it. The 3d web animation is not particularly good. Travers is completely the wrong shape! These animations are not meant to be accurate reproductions of the episodes. They never have been. The invasion was not accurate. Doesn’t stop it doing the job of giving a visual representation of the episodes.

    • Gordon

      July 12th, 2021 - 8:13am

The problem with 2d animation is not every story is going to be possible in 2d. The highlanders for example is going to most likely be done in 3d.

Having watched the new trailer for marvel’s what if I feel that style of animation is what web of fear is aiming for. Obviously marvel have far larger resources to do it effectively.

I have this sneaking suspicion that this animation is a test run for a larger budgeted project which they can iron out any issues that people have. The animation isn’t the problem. It’s the budget to do it effectively. This in all likelihood doesn’t have bbc America’s involvement which means the budget is incredibly small in comparison to the recent animations

Doesn’t seem to matter which animation style they go for there seems to be a group of fans that doesn’t like that style. Even great animation like moonbase macra terror or the invasion has its detractors. They can’t please everyone regardless of what they do.

Personally I don’t think it looks great on a 6 inch screen however I think it looks fine on a 50 inch tv which is how I will be watching the finished product. There are definitely things they could work on and improve for future releases though. Lastly none of us have seen the finished product yet. The finished version may look more polished

      July 13th, 2021 - 1:42am

      Every animation has its flaws.

Invasion had puppety movement, Reign had the jump-cut pace and weird movement on close ups, the characters in Ice Warriors only move sideways, there’s very little expression or movement in Tenth Planet or Moonbase, the intense, built in shading on the characters in Power and constant “dead air,” characters looking unlike themselves in Macra and lacking depth, Troughton constantly smiling in Faceless, the arms in Fury, the cartoonish details on the characters in Web and the lack of weight, and Jamie looking nothing like himself in Evil. The superior animation is TARDISTimegirl’s Web/Wheel videos from 2009. Now, those were slightly flawed, but excellent. One person could do those. What about an entire team?

I’m “determined” to push for the 3D animation (why is that being worded like it’s a bad thing?) because, well, they’ve started experimenting with a format that factually they can do much more with, of course I’d like them to do more with that. Newsflash: 2D animation is incredibly restrictive, even if you’re trying to reimagine the story rather than reconstruct it. Each angle has to be drawn, which is quite the task. That’s why we usually see characters from exactly the same angle all the time. And I feel like actual 3D would be more reliable than the faux 3D on Macra, because the characters went off model in that, and it was basically morphing different angles together, which sacrificed actual detail in the characters’ faces. You can also have the 3D characters interact with their environment, not to mention, the soundtrack fits better with a 3D environment, whereas the audio for Shada worked because it was recorded for the animation.

People have seen the one example of 3D animation done on a low budget and instead of constructively thinking how to improve it, they’re like “NO, STICK TO 2D BECAUSE THIS FIRST ATTEMPT AT 3D ON A LOWER BUDGET THAN THE USUAL RELEASES LOOKS BAD” I don’t know why people are criticising the fact that it’s in 3D; I’d say the actual issue is the odd determination to keep the cartoon aesthetic, which makes me think that they’re kinda using 3D to its advantage, but probably not enough. That’s why it looks wonky. It’s like they don’t want to stray too far from the look of the 2D ones, which is at the expense of the characters’ expressions and detail.

(Side note: I can’t understand for the life of me why people are desperate for the episodes to be as unlike the originals as possible, while also advocating for these as being “the final thing. Finito. Don’t bother doing anything else.” It worries me that these might be the final thing, when they’re trying to be stray further away from the original version. I care about the fact that I can’t watch 97 episodes of 60s DW like they were the other ones)

I’m absolutely over the moon for this release. It comes out for my birthday so I’ve treated myself to the DVD and Steelbook.

I’m incredibly relieved to see we’re back to the 2D style rather than the Web attempt. Back to double dipping on this one…I hope if the rumours about Abominable are true that’ll be the same. I’ve lost a lot of enthusiasm for Web after seeing that animation clip…Still it might surprise me.

I knew this was going to look like this anyway because it was a BBC Studios one, so I’m not disappointed.

I feel like I sound harsh towards the 2D animations usually. As their own thing, they look nice. Some good direction, especially in this clip with the Dalek Emperor. But if these are the absolute final things and I’m expected to think of these as the permanent substitutes, I will be disappointed.

    • Gordon

      July 4th, 2021 - 11:01pm

To be honest I don’t think the web animation looks great in a small phone screen or tablet. I do think it looks better on my giant 50 inch tv. It does it’s job of filling the 25 minute gap between episodes 2 and 4. However I don’t think I could sit through a full story of it in its current form. I do think there is plenty of room for improvement for future animations. Especially if it’s a full blown bbc America co funded animation which would give it a far larger budget to work with that could help them refine and improve the animation (with all the problems the animators have mentioned in doing tartan in 2d I can see the highlanders being a story done In 3d). Both Planet 55 and the bbc studios team both didn’t really get really good until moonbase and macra which was their 3rd release so I do think it’s possible for them to improve.

    • Anonymous

      July 5th, 2021 - 10:21am

Yeah, and I think the 3D animation would be better if it was like Marcus Dilloni’s Wheel in Space intro on YouTube. Not perfect, but I like it.

Yeah, the sacrifice of details on characters’ outfits is just one of the reasons why 3D would be more appropriate.

I actually think while Tenth Planet and Moonbase were more watchable than Reign, they still didn’t have much animation or range of character expressions.

I personally quite liked Shada’s animation, and the character models were at their best in that (in terms of the BBC Studios ones) One thing that definitely helped it was it had newly recorded audio. The acoustics of the sets in the 60s soundtracks don’t fit as well with the 2D animation style.

Actually, that Wheel video was good, but I just remembered the TARDISTimegirl Web of Fear trailer exists. Best missing episode animation and it was done by one person in 2009.

Think it all depends on how far along the animation is. If big finish creative (who I’m fairly confident is doing abominable) has been busy producing web 3 with shapeshifter studios and hasn’t been working on anything else with another animation company so they may have only just started it. It’s possible of course that they have also been working with digitoonz again who did fury of course or another animation studio while doing web which would mean they would be further along than we realise of course. The bbc studios team should be finishing up evil in the next month or so and the next rumoured release is galaxy 4. It’s a very simple and basic story to animate and is shorter than snowman. If indeed it was that It could very well be finished before snowman

Very exciting! At long last. I know some people knock the animations, but I think they do a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances, the makers do their utmost to be as faithful to the original material as possible; and for goodness sake, in the absence of missing episodes being returned, they are the closest we are going to get; besides telesnaps are included so you always have the option of watching that version instead. Just the thrill of having that title spine-side-on in your library will be fantastic!

The costs would be prohibitively high. Besides if they did do that and release previously animated stories in a new version people (or rather certain people) would be up in arms. Personally i like the 2d animations and I’d rather stick with them and hope the original episodes are returned than have constantly technologically updated versions of already animated stories.

But the animations aren’t even close enough to the original episodes. Especially now they’re trying to distance themselves from the originals. We’re not really getting the episodes back. Not even close. I don’t want the 2019 Macra Terror to be *the* thing. It’s nothing like the original one.

I don’t like the macra animation but i will not buy an alternative one it’s just a waste of money. I just watch the recon of it. The other animations have been great.

Derek Martinus was amazed when Marius Goring agreed to appear in Dr Who. Nice guy Derek I met him at a convention back in the 80s.

I just love the way the Daleks glide in these animations. Much more alien and sinister…Terry Nation would be proud I think.
What a privilege to get to see this lost story. A recent England win over Germany in football, and now Evil of the Daleks being released. Yay!

I really hope there is an option to play episode 1 with the repeat broadcast audio.

That is something i was thinking. Or even as an easter egg.

What’s the difference between the repeat episode 1 and the original?

What happened on the repeat broadcast?

    • Whofan44

      July 2nd, 2021 - 11:46am

The repeat of the story was worked into the narrative of the show with the end of The Wheel in Space leading into the repeat broadcast. The first ep has a bit of extra framing dialogue from Doctor and Zoe over the first bit of the episode.

As whofan44 says, the extra audio was released as an extra on the evil cd release. I’d be happy if it was an easter egg

Funny you should mention the Wheel in Space, I’ve literally just watched the animated first ten minutes on YouTube.
Just love it and have to check it out every now and again.
I think I’m just pining for the full complete animation to be done.
Anyway after Evil and Abominable let’s hope it’s next.

If the rumours are true then galaxy 4 and the celestial toy maker will be the next two after abominable

I’ll be fine with Galaxy four and Celestial Toymaker, as these and Masterplan are my favourites from the 1st Dr Era that are MIA. Still hope wheels in the mix aswell though.

I have seen nothing about The Celestial Toymaker other than random fan speculation.

From the short clip, I much prefer this style of animation. Too much ‘uncanny valley’ in ‘Web’ and the proportions of the figures were all wrong in ‘Fury’.

Personally, I think ‘Invasion’ has been the best quality animation so far and, again speaking personally, I wish there had been some consistency across the range, developing a kind of ‘house style’ for animated ‘Who’ but obviously logistics and practicalities precluded that.

Very much looking forward to this release! Nice covers too.

I prefer the Web animation honestly. Comparatively, the 2D animations look like drawn over telesnap recons.

It was obviously always going to be BBC Studios doing this one, but I still can’t help but feel disappointed about the animation after seeing the *movement* in the Web of Fear clips. The characters walking into the Emperor’s throne room are just sort of dragged from one point of the screen to the other. I hope BBC Studios work with a legit 3D company (no, not faux 3D like Macra) for future stuff

Much prefer this style. Remember 7 full episodes of 3d animation would be much more expensive to produce.

I imagine next week when 10 and 18 are despatched. This is the clear box. Luckily i have a few spare grey singles and double spare case to match up. Which will be irrelevant once i have them all in blue.

Seeing as they seem to have 1 release slot a month I don’t see the next non limited edition to be out till at least October.
