Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker and Tenth Doctor David Tennant face a new nemesis in a quest to save reality in brand new video game, Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality

Digital entertainment studio, Maze Theory, in partnership with BBC Studios, today announces that the brand-new videogame Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality will launch on Wednesday 30th September 2021.

Compatible with current and next-gen consoles as well as PC, Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality reimagines and expands on Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, with a completely new and compelling adventure.

With new worlds to explore and all-new modes of gameplay, players will be guided by the Thirteenth Doctor (voiced by Jodie Whittaker), and for the first time will also encounter the Tenth Doctor (voiced by David Tennant) in a new story written by Gavin Collinson (Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins).

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality will be jam-packed with easter eggs, terrifying new foes, and iconic monsters such as the Cybermen, the Daleks and the Weeping Angels. Players will also find themselves immersed in the ‘Chaosverse’: a corrupted alternate universe where worlds and timelines collide to create new adventures, encounters, and threats…

Doctor Who: The Edge or Reality Highlights

  • In this thrilling first-person adventure, a ‘reality virus’ is wreaking havoc across the universe, causing time glitches that distort the past, present and future.
  • Players will face an entirely new antagonist – The CyberReaper, an ominous foe with a terrifying purpose. More to be revealed….
  • The new story opens up multiple new environments for the player to explore, from a Cybership to the Chaosverse.
  • New and expanded levels include new gameplay modes, such as puzzles, shooting, collecting and stealth.

Ian Hambleton, CEO of Maze Theory said: “With our partners at BBC Studios, we are giving Doctor Who fans and gamers an incredible new experience through space and time.”

He adds: “The appearance of both the Thirteenth and Tenth Doctors is set to be an epic event. The ‘Chaosverse’ is a mind-blowing new concept, which brings a whole new dimension to the Doctor Who experience.

This much anticipated console/PC launch follows the incredible success of the mobile game Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins and re-affirms our commitment to take players on the most unexpected and immersive narrative journeys.”

Kevin Jorge, Senior Producer – Games & Interactive for BBC Studios said “We’re really excited to bring Doctor Who back to console and to give players the chance to be the centre of a new Doctor Who adventure. We’re always striving to bring the Doctor Who universe to life in unique and interesting ways, tell new stories and give fans the chance to be part of their own adventure and I believe we’ve done that with The Edge of Reality.

We really hope that fans and those new to Doctor Who alike, will enjoy helping the Doctor in this epic adventure.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and PC on 30th September 2021.

This game is pretty much a port of the VR game. Unfortunately a lot of basic options such as inverting controllers Y axis etc aren’t included which makes it hard to use, and as many users have pointed out – its full of bugs. 🙁

I completed it but I had to reset it a few times as some of the puzzle and essential items that I was needing disappeared. There is some fun bits but the bugs glitches and juttering really made it a frustrating game. Wasn’t expecting a triple a gaming experience but I Wish I had waited till it had been fixed before taking the plunge

Wasn’t the whole purpose of it being delayed so they could fix bugs? Now I’m even more worried about what’ll happen to the further delayed Switch port.

Does anyone know if there will be a proper disc release for this? As a collector and an old fogey, I like to have an old-school hard copy in my hands, not just a digital download.

It’s digital only. It may get a physical release from one of those companies that does limited physical copies, but that won’t be known until one of those companies announces it.

The edge of reality you don’t need vr as it has been adapted for normal consoles. The edge of time you do need vr. However I will give a Warning. The age of reality is a bit buggy in places in places. I’m hopeful they fix those

Having attempted to find a PC Copy I can buy (Which they don’t seem to do, despite saying it would be out on PC) & having read Gordon’s response about it being ‘a bit buggy’ I checked some further reviews. It seems that it has a whole host of problems within the game. Problems with play, graphics & more. I’m going to give this a miss!

      Ron, It’s on Steam.

£19.99 standard base game, £5.00 dlc, £24.99 delux – standard plus dlc (so no saving).

Tried the Steam site. It’s as badly full of problems as the actual game. Took 3 attempts to get onsite & the navigation/use is atrocious. Won’t be bothering with any of this – Terrible!

Don’t like the way these Iron Men Cybermen are sticking around, why not use the current cyberman, or when’s the last time we’ve seen the “Wheel in Space” Cybermen? Guess they’re the new bronze Daleks.

No, the ones in the game are the 2013 versions. The Mish-Mash one seems to be some sort of leader/boss you’ll face during the game.

Can’t we just have a proper Doctor Who video game. They’re like an uncle who’s trying too hard to keep up with the kids ‘ooh Nintendo’s are popular with the kids let’s release something on that’, ‘oh VR’s going to be the next big thing, let’s get on that’, ‘oh wow mobile games are really in nowadays, let’s release a weeping angel mobile game’.

Can we not just have a decent video game for actual consoles that’s actually made for consoles with good graphics, good gameplay. It feels like it’s a VR puzzle experience that you just so happen can play on consoles rather than the actual full package video game people want. The eternity clock was so close to being what everyone wanted if it wasn’t so restrictive in its simple forward and back gameplay. We need something like that.

Lego Dimensions was the best Doctor Who game, let’s be honest. 3D environment, you can play as all the Doctors, fly the TARDIS, all the console rooms, easter eggs from across ALL of DW (not just New Who, like always)

Lonely Assassins sounds incredibly basic, I don’t know what all the hype’s about

As someone who absolutely loves gaming, it would be nice if a video game could be discussed without a Playstation or Xbox fanatic knocking everything else on the market.

Virtually everyone has a smart phone, lots of people have Nintendo consoles, not everyone has the cash to throw at an expensive gaming set up (and this is coming from someone who has spent far too much on my gaming setup). Different markets exist and are absolutely thriving.

But they haven’t bothered to do a console game that’s what I’m saying. At least not since the eternity clock. So for you as someone who loves gaming on a variety of different platforms then you’re already getting your Doctor who content. I’m just wishing they’d give us a proper high quality, good stunning graphics, good story, good monsters, good gameplay Doctor who game. And the only way they’re going to be able to do that is on console as that’s the only thing that can really handle a big, visually stunning game like that

The big two will always be PS and Xbox it’s just weird they never attempted to offer anything for them. It probably comes down to the fact it’s easier to do games on the cheap for other platforms that don’t require high quality visuals or realism or long extensive storylines

Well the BBC are absolutely not going to be able to afford a triple A budget and as much as Doctor Who fans keep demanding a game, whenever the BBC release one that pushes the boat out a bit, nobody buys it.

I’m not sure what you’re complaining about. The article is very clear that…
“Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and PC on 30th September 2021.”

It looks like they’ve more than attempted to make this game for PS and Xbox.
      They’ve done it.

They said in a Reddit Q&A back in October that they were planning two expansions. Around the same time they asked fans on their Twitter what “obscure or rarely seen” monsters they’d like to see in a Doctor Who video game, which may or may not be related. 🙂
