Doctor Who The Daleks in Colour Ltd Edition Steelbook
Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk
Originally transmitted from December 1963 to February 1964, The Daleks introduced one of the Doctor’s most formidable and enduring foes.
The story follows the very first crew of the TARDIS as they land in a petrified forest on an alien planet. Determined to explore, the Doctor (William Hartnell) leads his companions into the metal city, where they discover danger at every corner and what will become his deadliest enemy, the mutant Daleks.
The seven original 25 minute episodes have now been colourised and weaved together into a 75 minute blockbuster. With brand new sound and a new score – created by Mark Ayres – The Daleks has been gloriously updated, whilst ensuring the original classic story remains as thrilling as it was when it was first seen back in 1963.
This release also includes the original seven episodes on DVD in black & white, as they were first broadcast plus a 15 minute exclusive featurette and all special features from the previous release.

June 15th, 2024 - 2:51pmJust got round to opening mine
Is there meant to be a feature booklet inside the steelbook, as mine just has a BBC “more from” booklet?

February 16th, 2024 - 8:04pmWe’re we expecting a new restoration on those B&W episodes?
Gordon
February 16th, 2024 - 8:31pmThey never clarified if it was going to be a new restoration or not for the black and white version but many suspected it would not due to it being a dvd. This confirms not only is it the same restoration it’s also the same dvd that came out in 2007.

February 18th, 2024 - 1:16pmIt does not have a reversible cover on the dvd version either

December 22nd, 2023 - 10:29amThe cover is good, but could have been better. Given the whole USP is the Daleks in Colour, this should have been the most colorful cover ever!

December 22nd, 2023 - 5:33pmI think the normal Blu ray cover looks much better, if they could have transferred that picture or similar onto the Steelbook that would have been much better.

December 21st, 2023 - 2:15pmI’ve just seen the Steelbook cover reveal and I’m not very impressed. It’s ok but I think I might cancel my order.
Just a Dalek on the front isn’t very impressive and it’s also got very muted colours. I thought they might want to make it bright and colourful. The back of the Steelbook is maybe marginally more interesting.
What’s your thoughts on the cover?

December 21st, 2023 - 3:36pmI like it a difference to the usual tardis pic for every animation if they had a version without the awful music choices I’d buy it season 1 set
Gordon
December 21st, 2023 - 11:58pmI think the blu ray cover is pretty poor. Looks like a quick 5 minute lunchtime job. Pick a colour photo. Photoshop 2 daleks in. Job done. Steelbook is better but it’s a bit in the plain side. Doesn’t feel very special.

They’re fine – but not wowing me

December 23rd, 2023 - 3:09amThe bluray cover also gives the impression the daleks are in the tardis at some point in the story!

December 26th, 2023 - 4:53pmJust cancelled my order for this, l like to have 1 or 2 steelbooks on display at a time, but this l just wouldn’t have had out. For me l find it somewhat ironic that in colourising and modernising the story, that they decided that a 60’s psychedelic cover was the best way to market the steelbook, especially for the new audience they hope to gain, so I’ll just wait until the complete Season Box Set is released as to be honest l would rather watch the original anyway.
More then 2 alphabets
November 23rd, 2023 - 9:03pm10/10 for colour and effects
10/10 for effort, they really tried to give a more friendly version for 2023 audience
7/10 sound, new music great but frankly I had a headache by the end as the mono sounds were there overlapping, new music a little too loud.
6/10 for the edit, so much chopped out it made it very confusing. Didn’t really showcase the doctor.
I think it wasn’t the best story to do this for but it was still fun.

November 23rd, 2023 - 9:27pmJust finished watching and I thought they have done a fabulous job.
I do feel it was a little rushed – around 5 mins more to allow the pace to slow here and there and it would have been perfect to my taste
But 10/10 to everyone involved
Did any of us ever think we would see 60’s who in Colour outside of Animation – I certainly didn’t
Amazing
It very much feels like “Who” is back in business, cannot wait for Saturday

November 25th, 2023 - 12:45amI thought the Daleks coloured, was Amazing!! Even the music and editing. Makes a great alternative to watching this story in colour and lovely to have something a bit differently done. 10/10 from me!

November 25th, 2023 - 10:35amI still think the original plan was for AUC but when the rights issues came to light they moved onto The Daleks.
I still think an hour version of AUC with the first episode in full followed by the rest edited down would be great in colour in the future (hopefully).
As for The Daleks, it was nice to see in colour but editing, especially in the last 25 mins was ridiculous. Too much. It could have been a good 15 mins longer. The music was too loud in places as it overpowered the dialogue and inappropriate for what was happening on screen.
I’m still glad it exists though and hope it does get younger children watching.
The War Games is rumoured to be next.

November 25th, 2023 - 12:38pmNo don’t do The War Games Its a classic, leave it how it is

November 25th, 2023 - 1:32pmWhat difference does it make if its colourised? Its not like you cant watch it in its original form. Its an option.
DPHill
November 25th, 2023 - 5:02pmWar games is likely next as power doesn’t exist and they couldn’t do an unearthly child for legal reasons so daleks is number one legally now so doing the last second doctor they could do a previously of the surviving second doctor stories like they did with the kinda next time on the daleks
Just watch the original if you don’t like colour, lots of people love it as do i but also I love the originals!!

November 25th, 2023 - 5:23pmMost people don’t have a problem with the colourisation, the thought of trying to edit The War Games down to 75 minutes though is rather ludicrous (and thankfully looks to be just nothing more than a rumour). People want a good product, just saying the original is still there is completely unhelpful if much better candidates exist. Constructive criticism and feedback is important, especially with a brand new range starting up.
Prowl1701
November 25th, 2023 - 7:36pmI don’t need a condensed version of war games, unlike the Daleks which I have always thought dragged on, I find the war games well paced for a ten parter.
DPHill
November 25th, 2023 - 8:05pmI do think war games cannot be 75min, at least close to two hours, even then that’s a lot to cut!
daz
November 25th, 2023 - 11:01pmNothing has been said that the coloured versions have to be 75 minutes though.
They Daleks might have been longer for example but they had to make the timing decision so it could be finished in time for the 60th.
Bobby Fackrell
November 27th, 2023 - 1:26pmNow now all for healthy debates and differences of opinions but don’t go down the ‘don’t watch it then’ route with me, I’m entitled to my shilling’s worth just as much as the next Unearthly Child

November 22nd, 2023 - 8:44pmWill definitely be ordering this as the state of the Collection releases in Australasia looks uncertain (and expensive). Collecting the individual Steelbook releases is the next best thing for time being.

November 22nd, 2023 - 11:22pmAren’t Madman doing them? It seems odd to take on BBC and Who and not do the collections.
Bobby Fackrell
November 20th, 2023 - 5:51pmI’m always unsure with colourising I love 60s Doctor Who and Black and White is part of the charm and condensing a three hour classic to 75 mins worries me, another great thing about the 60s show was the long scenes and slower pace I think Daleks works great as a 7 parter
The Time Lord 1944
November 12th, 2023 - 10:22amHas anyone seen the New York Post article about the two missing Hartnell episodes? A collector called John Franklin claims to know the location of two missing Hartnell episodes but he says those in possession of them are elderly and too frightened to hand them over to the BBC for fear of having the episodes seized or fear of prosecution.

November 12th, 2023 - 10:47amAlready been debunked:
My statement:
‘Sadly, this article is a misrepresentation of the conversation between myself and the journalist, and most unhelpful. I’ve ask for it to be removed.
reiterate, 99% of the conversation with the journalist was orientated to ‘Film is Fabulous!’ and the issues facing film collectors with vulnerable collections. It is clear that these issues do not appear in the article. What a pity!
If I knew the article was to be completely orientated to Dr Who, about which I know very little, I’d have referred the journalist to Paul Vanezis, as was the case with the journalist from The Independent, who also contacted us for comment.
Please do not place any emphasis on the content. The misquotes are glaring. I sincerely hope that this does not affect the ‘Film is Fabulous!’ initiative.

November 11th, 2023 - 11:26pmWas in two minds but decided to buy the steelbook. Yes I feel it’s over priced for what I’m getting but it will bug me if I don’t get the steelbook. I get it will probably be on season 1 whenever it will come out. However there is no guarantee that other colourisations will make collection sets especially if the season has already been released like season 2. I don’t see them rereleasing it just because dalek invasion earth or the time meddler got colourised. Considering how long it’s taking just to do 1 story and how Russell seems to have long term plans for colourisation I suspect these colourisations will be ongoing long after the collections are complete and released and buying the steelbook means that it’s uniform. I also suspect they will not wait on them either and financially they will need to release them separately to recoup costs for a set period before including them in a collection set (same set up as the animations).

November 10th, 2023 - 8:18pmSo the new 75 minute colourised version is on blu-ray, but the original 7 parter is just dvd? Any extras?
Gordon
November 10th, 2023 - 9:58pmSuspect it will just be the same extras as on the original dvd plus 1 new feature
original dvd extras:
Episode 2 commentary: Verity lambert and Christopher Barry. Moderated by Gary Russell
Episode 4 commentary: William Russell, Carole Ann Ford, Christopher Barry. Moderated by Gary Russell
Episode 7 commentary: William Russell, Carole Ann Ford, Richard Martin Moderated by Gary Russell

November 10th, 2023 - 2:06pm“The seven original 25 minute episodes have now been colourised and weaved together into a 75 minute blockbuster.”
Does that mean all 7 eps have been colourised and will be on this release, or just the 75 compilation version?
Philip Shaw
November 10th, 2023 - 2:10pmSounds like they have weaved a 75 minute compilation first…then colourists that.
daz
November 10th, 2023 - 2:12pmIt’s 75 mins. It premieres on BBC4 on 23rd November.

November 10th, 2023 - 2:23pmI would imagine only the condensed 75 min version has the colour
To be fair, whilst its great – this story in 7 part from drags a bit so if they have cut out the “filler” it should be a good watch
We’ll find out on Doctor Who day i guess
