August 20th, 2023 - 1:26pmAnother DVD extras question. Why are only the first 3 DVD versions of the Sea Devils episodes included? Why not all 6? What is it about the first 3 episodes on DVD that makes them unique to the last 3?
Thanks!
Gordon
August 20th, 2023 - 2:38pmPretty much the same reason why there is 2 versions of curse. Because episodes 4 5 and 6 exist in the original pal tapes. Episodes 1 2 and 3 don’t. It’s to include the rsc and new versions of 1 2 and 3. There isn’t rsc versions of 4 5 and 6 so not included.
Rex F
August 20th, 2023 - 3:52pmOnly the first three were restored differently (the same way as Curse). Mutants 1,2 and Time Monster 1-5 are the same.
David Minter
August 20th, 2023 - 6:52pmAlso, I haven’t done a direct comparison, but the Blu-Ray closing credits for The Sea Devils seem to have different music than the DVD version. The DVD versions don’t have the extended ending theme, just the main typical one. I could be imagining it, but cursory memory of watching both versions nearly back to back, the ending themes seem different.
David Minter
August 15th, 2023 - 10:08pmWhy is the “DVD Version” included as an “extra” on The Curse Of Peldadon? What’s different about the Blu-Ray version of the episodes on the disc vs. the original DVD release?
Thanks!
Rex F
August 15th, 2023 - 11:01pmThe DVD is a reverse standards conversion copy of the ropey Canadian videotapes, while the new version is Vidfired film recordings with superimposed colo(u)r – most people will prefer that one (sharper, no jitter), but there are variations and so they include both. That happens with the other NTSC eps as well.
David Minter
August 15th, 2023 - 11:36pmYeah, it was a bit confusing for Curse as there were no original DVD extra versions of the episodes on any of the Blu-Ray releases I’ve gotten.

July 13th, 2023 - 12:05pmSeason 20 announced at 3pm today according to Ian Levine being reliably informed. Here we go again.

July 13th, 2023 - 12:26pmGreat news…..When’s the next one due?what season will it be?lol
Prof Horner
July 13th, 2023 - 12:29pmWell DWM is released next Thursday. So they can announce and maybe preview as well, depending on how long before it is released.
I think because season 9 was released just over three months after 2, we all thought we would be getting another box set around June. It hasn’t worked out like that. I hope we will get another this year after hopefully the one about to be announced. Maybe if the BBC announce that due to amount of work needed on these sets, they are going to release two sets a year after this year. Would we all be happy at that? Certainly when you consider the mount of work that will be needed on season 1and 6 , the two remaining sixties seasons with most of their original episodes, plus the work needed on another of my favorite seasons. 7 ,it would make sense. Plus it gives more to do something about season 3. Here’s hoping that this time we do get announcement today.

July 13th, 2023 - 1:31pmFingers crossed! I can settle for two sets a year, considering the amount of work that goes into these sets I’m happy to wait for the perfect product to be released.

July 13th, 2023 - 2:15pmProf if the pattern is correct will be a other one after this one to be announced then only 2 n3xt year. Since the collection started its been 2,3,2,3,2, 3 (this year).
Season 3 gonna be last if not penultimate with the amount of work needed with sk many missing episodes with currently 24 as could use the uni version of mission.
Season 1 has just all 7 of Marco polo, 4 has 10 missing, 5 has 4 and 6 has 5. Unless any ,missing eps do turn up…..

July 12th, 2023 - 11:22amThere’s a strong possibility of a new Season set being announced today. Lee Binding has hinted on Twitter apparently.
Also A Pink Tardis picture has been posted on DW site to support Ncuti in his role in Barbie.
But what if we get Season 25 announced instead of 20?
Happiness will prevail either way…
Nb7
July 12th, 2023 - 1:06pmThe Doctor Who YouTube page have just put up a video from The Happiness Patrol, the link tardis scene.
Is it connected to the barbie movie? Or the next blu ray?! Apparently season 20 has pink on the blu ray cover. Are they playing games here?!
Gordon
July 12th, 2023 - 1:26pmLee binding was joking about the pink tardis being a season 25 reveal. Had heard of the rumours of an announcement today but was unsure how true it was. with the barbie promotional stuff going on today I don’t think they will want anything to clash with that. Will be gobsmacked if they don’t get at least ncuti photoed in front of the tardis. The worldwide buzz on barbie is huge (far larger than who) so it would be a missed opportunity for doctor who not to be a part of it

July 12th, 2023 - 2:43pmIf it is tomorrow as so many factors pointing to it (usa and australia preorders for s9 this week, doctor who magazine put next thrusday, 4 months since last release, summer now). Would give us a September release roughly, then maybe 1 more for Xmas.
Prof Horner
July 12th, 2023 - 3:05pmWell the last one was was released seven weeks after it’s announcement. So the first week in September would seem likely. Season 17 was released the Monday before Christmas. So a third release could be the same. Fingers crossed.

July 11th, 2023 - 11:14pmSeason 9 is now up for Pre-order at JB Hi Fi in Australia at a whopping $124. Hopefully the price will go down before release but I’ve never known them to have a place holder price in the past.
James
July 12th, 2023 - 10:46amWorks out about 15£ more then UK. Yet USA is £8 cheaper then UK. Thought they’d be the same price for everyone but in the relevant currency.
2e-Rex
July 12th, 2023 - 9:36pmIt’s better than Sanity’s ridiculous $156, but still way too expensive. I was able to order a copy from the UK and have it shipped and posted and it was still cheaper than JB’s, and it was from a 2nd hand seller on Ebay.
I hoped the pricing on Sanity was just a mistake as they are sometimes not the most reliable retailer. I remember for months they used a fan made image of season 22 instead of the official one. Heck, they have a listing for “Shrek the Fifth” on their website!??? Very strange.
But JB is far more professional and reliable so this is very worrying that they expect people to pay an extra $45. A over 50% price rise!

July 6th, 2023 - 3:16pmNothing today then?

July 6th, 2023 - 3:42pmSo far this sixty year is turning into a bit of a disappointment. Just the excellent season 9 . Even season 25 would be good news right now ! Can we expect a lot of goodies packed into the autumn? May that be two more box sets. The the welcome return of animations or if we are really blessed, missing episodes. Let’s hope for some surprises soon.
Keep posting in a respectful and at times humorous manner. And keep enjoying the Doctor who you like.
Prowl1701
July 6th, 2023 - 6:32pmYeah my YouTube video today was me discussing my disappointment with the first half of the anniversary year. I wonder if production issues are causing planned releases to be delayed. Hopefully the back half of the year will make up for things.
Nb7
July 6th, 2023 - 6:57pmThey could announce the next set in September for November 20th? They may make it a bigger deal if it’s released closer to the 23rd November. Maybe a big relaunch, good way to do it focusing around that month. Then again is that too much in a short amount of time? 60th specials, collection set, 60th specials blu ray release, maybe an annimation?
Maybe Peter Davison meant the announcement would be summer 23 for season 20!
Samuel
July 6th, 2023 - 9:19pmRelaunch is starting to sound like the most sensible option right now.
These limited sets are somewhat of an investment, so I personally would rather know if there is a production schedule issue, rather than not know at all what’s going on, particularly on the 60th Anniversary year of Doctor Who.
I’ve said it here before, and I know it’s a bit controversial – re-release all of the out of print sets, as HMV is already repeatedly doing with Season 12; instead of “Limited”, just call the main product “The Collection”.
If not that, then bring the Standard editions up to sync with Limited, instead of delaying them by over a year plus.
I just think there needs to be a serious re-engagement with fans and customers again – as I say, HMV are already way ahead on the ball with the Season 12 batch re-releases, that’s exactly what should be happening with every other previous set as far as I’m concerned.
Ebay reseller sharks are still having a field day years later with the Limiteds. Unless you’ve already spent a ton of money catching up on them, let alone the half a year delay on the marketing and announcements of this range, I can’t help but agree with @Prof Horner and @Prowl1701
It’s the not knowing what’s going on at all, good or bad, that’s giving me less and less confidence with this range now. There’s got to be a new re-stocking strategy to make them all seasons accessible. Good on HMV with Season 12 Limited.
Prowl1701
July 7th, 2023 - 12:31amYeah I really don’t want everything to drop in November, o want them to space stuff out a little bit at least over the back half of the year.
Mark Moxham
July 7th, 2023 - 7:52amI agree. The silence on what’s going on is not encouraging.
The Collection range has been great, mostly. But I do question whether we’ll ever see the full 26 seasons of the classic series released.
It’s not an encouraging start to the anniversary year.
Jake E
July 7th, 2023 - 9:23amSamuel, will you stop going on about the same thing?
Limited means Limited I really don’t know what you don’t understand we’ve gone over this and the apparent re-releases of Season 12 you are referring to are just the second print edition that have turned up in stock takes that aren’t making new ones. These are old ones they have found in the storage places.
If they bring the standard editions up then that would really kill the Limited Editions and they need the Limiteds to sell well or they will kill the whole range.
If you’re really that desperate go on eBay and find them or use Britbox in the meantime
daz
July 7th, 2023 - 9:54amThere’s absolutely no need for a relaunch. We are already half way there. And there is no need to reprint the limited editions.
Yes it is quiet but for all we know we might only be getting 2 sets this year anyway with the 60th Specials Steelbook/Blu-ray/DVD in December and maybe a surprise animation release for November.
The business model is fine. Limited release first for those who collect them like myself. Then a year or so later the standard version appears.
For potential future new fans they will have to make do with the standards, assuming they will collect physical media, or streaming if not.
Nb7
July 7th, 2023 - 10:23amI can’t see them releasing the Ltd sets with the standard ones, they want the kits ones to sell out which some of them haven’t. 22 and 24 you can still get that’s why I think they may relaunch them, make a bigger hype closer to around the anniversary date.
Very surprising how quiet this year has been, hey at least we’ve got Doomsday!
WhosNext
July 7th, 2023 - 11:10amOn one group else where one of the chaps that works on the sets says announcement due very soon.
Samuel
July 7th, 2023 - 11:12am@Jake E – No need to read my comments if you don’t like them, haha.
“Go on Ebay” is really going to help fund the official blu ray range isn’t it? £200 and £300 for Season 19 on page 1 of Ebay, unless you take a massive risk on second hand, considering how fragile these sets are. Resellers are taking total advantage of fans that feel it’s the only way to catch up with “the ultimate collection”. In 2023, it’s become more of a financial blind spot than ever for the BBC.
Regarding Britbox, if you’re implying that fans can rely on a streaming service for the entirety of classic Doctor Who, while all major streaming sites are on/off clearing the decks what feels like every other week for zero reason – including Amazon Video, wiping out digital purchases from customer accounts – You get all of that fun and uncertainty for £60 a year, or £5.99 a month. Britbox also doesn’t include many of 1960’s Doctor Who, and as far as I’m aware, none of the extras from The Collection sets. The two seperate products are simply not comparable.
@Nb7 Very well said. We already have Seasons such as 24 already on the shelves of HMV, as both Limited and Standard editions, along with batch re-releases of Season 12. Old stock or New stock, that’s irrelevant. The idea is already there, so why not just put the rest of the Limited range on the shelf with 12 and 24.
The business model was set up as a bit of an accident in 2018, when Season 12 initially sold out instantaneously. Through covid lockdowns, the sets were coming out very rapidly, but I think because manufacturing, processing and marketing time as hugely slowed down, as I say I just seriously believe the business strategy is now out of date, and in need of revision.
2023, it’s been half a year and we still don’t know what’s going on with this range, and due to reselling, I can fully empathise with fans that both don’t have the confidence to invest in catchup spending in the hundreds of pounds, while on the other hand not having a single clue what’s to become of this range.
Oh, and @Jake E, thanks for your kind concern, however I am fortunate enough to own all of the current Limited range. Many Doctor Who fans have not been so fortunate, and so I believe it’s worth just having a civilized conversation on this forum about how the BBC can make this range more accessible, and protected from reseller sharks, while adding even more funding and following to this range, instead of burning it away, which I think has already been happening since the start.
Having to pay £300 for a Blu Ray boxset in today’s financial crisis, when another season from the exact same range is sat on a shelf in HMV for £40 is laughable in my view.
Gordon
July 7th, 2023 - 11:21amIt has been a wee bit disappointing so far but it was never going to be on the same scale as the 50th or 40th.
It’s my understanding over the last couple of days that mark ayres is still working on the next set. Ian Levine was moaning and demanding a release date for the next release and he said he wasn’t enjoying the wait. Mark responded that he wasn’t particularly enjoying the 12 hour days to get it all done which suggests the next set isn’t quite finished yet. To be honest when I think about it I’m not surprised as season 20 is a big season. 8 stories. 2 versions of five doctors and enlightenment. There is the equivalent of 33 episodes to restore if you count 2 versions five doctors (I know it’s feature length but it is the length of roughly 4 eps) and the special edition of enlightenment (it’s about 75 mins so 3 eps) plus with it being 8 stories there will be a significant amount of extras to digitise. It would be a lot of work.
As for relaunch that’s not happening. They are half way through the range and are already filming extras for next year. They are no way relaunching. Hmv having additional stock that was found in a stock take is not a rerelease.
Jake E
July 7th, 2023 - 11:43amSamuel if you have all the Limited Editions then why on Earth do you keep going on about wanting them to re-release all the Limited Editions? Makes no sense haha 🙂
And when I was talking about Britbox no it’s no substitute for the Blu-Ray sets. I was saying use Britbox to watch the episodes while you wait for the Standard edition versions to come out. It has all of the surviving 60’s stuff now I think and almost all of the animations
I don’t think you can find Limited Edition Season 12 on any shelves. I think that just shows up online for a while every now and again.
Season 24 only had Limited and Standard out at the same time due to poor sales. Too many more instances of that and then BBC may pull the plug so I wouldn’t be praising that if I were you, if you want them to complete all sets and possibly do Wilderness etc.
“Business strategy is now out of date, and in need of revision” – So you want the BBC to screw over the Limited Edition collectors just because we’re lucky enough and big enough fans to have them all. Cheers mate and I think their Business strategy is just fine. Selling 10,000 sets per season for £50 now and then Standard Editions after.
They can just buy the Standard Editions it’s not that big a deal and I’ve seen second hand Season 18 and Season 10 go for under £100 each recently so they are a lot more reasonable now if you look around
@daz I agree! 🙂
@Gordon Yes

Cor blimey the stress of no announcement is taking its toll haha.

Rex Farrel
July 7th, 2023 - 12:33pmIan Levine can find something else to watch while he waits, I’m sure. (And I thought my life was empty!)
The way to fix the limited situation is to make fewer copies, or withdraw existing stock and repackage as standard. HMV’s unsold stock of Season 12 should have given everyone involved a clue, and based on what usually happens with HMV there will come a point where those sets are returned to the BBC for credit. (Finding more and more unsold stock is not a good thing.) Clearly not everyone is buying – or wanting to buy – every season.
Samuel
July 7th, 2023 - 1:30pm@Jake E – As I said, alternatively just bring the Standards up to sync with Limiteds, instead of delaying the standard range by a year plus. Either way, this range needs some kind of marketing boost at the very, very least, though personally I would still prefer the Limiteds to be re-printed at least in small batches and simply brand them as “deluxe” or “luxury” versions.
For disclosure, I was also dissapointed with Ian Levine’s social media posts regarding The Collection. I disagree with Levine on the Collections not coming out quick enough, as there are devoted fans working tirelessly on the actual content on the products. It is a labour of love that simply cannot be rushed.
So to be clear, it’s not about rushing the hardworking people on these sets, and I don’t agree with Levine’s take on the silence. For me it’s the not knowing at all what’s going on. It’s only thanks to @Gordon in the comments above regarding Mark Ayers that we finally have some kind of granule of a hint that it may be the actual workload proving greater than maybe initially intended towards a release date with regards to Peter Davison and co.
I do kind of agree with @Rex; I own the limiteds to date, but for me it just doesn’t sit right that so many fans are getting ripped off over these sets on Ebay etc. Don’t get me started on the Season 9 Steelbook – it’s better to laugh about that steelbook after about 4 or 5 pints of Strongbow!
Prof Horner
July 7th, 2023 - 3:42pmGreat comments on here. Remember these box sets are put together by people who genuinely love the series. It is disappointing that we haven’t heard anything about the next set . But we are all grateful for all the love put into these sets. I can understand Ian Levines frustration as he recently turned seventy, time maybe is running out for him to see all seasons out on box sets.Something I can relate to him and I am ten years younger than him. But hopefully good things are round the corner. No doubt something will jump out at us when we least expect it.

July 7th, 2023 - 5:03pmPersonally what I think they may do is announce 2023 set 2 in around late July for a September release, then announce a 3rd and 4th set during the autumn for a november/december release. They could be getting all this ready for the actual 60th celebration time.
The Time Lord 1944
July 7th, 2023 - 6:56pmI was reading Ian Levine’s post. A chap who used to work for the BBC and now works for the Radio Times commented on it and stated that its highly unlikely this collection will ever be completed due to the increasing costs of production and the diminishing market. Some titles are certainly not selling in the numbers needed and standard editions have slowed down possibly because it costs so much to produce the discs now. It certainly worried Mr Levine and it’s worried me.
Gordon
July 7th, 2023 - 10:45pmIt’s just ian being ian. Shouting first ask questions later. I get that he’s impatient and with his age I kind of understand but he always has been a I want it all now kind of guy and the way he does it rubs people the wrong way as it comes across as entitled as he returned episodes and feels he’s owed .
I hear he’s trying to get people to animate episodes to fulfil his dream of having a complete archive plus he wants them done as accurately as possible and not wanting Gary Russell (arch enemy of doctor who fans that strive for accuracy according to Ian) anywhere near them as he believes Gary deliberately made changes to abominable snowmen just to spite him (yes ian is 70 not 7). Ian is Talking about people clubbing together and crowdfunding it. Can see the bbc doing a cease and desist if they get wind especially when they own the copyright for the show and characters. Even if he does get backing and it is completed there is no guarantee that the bbc will pick it up and use it and as Ian normally just does things without any legal and copyright clearances (see his shada and mission to the unknown) it’s probably won’t happen . I wish l could get behind it but I just feel it’s all going to end in tears or a massive rant.
Rex Farrel
July 8th, 2023 - 1:15amIan should try pitching to BBC Studios. If he can do it cheaper than the others (without “volunteers”) then they’ll listen. He might need to partner with someone more diplomatic, of course…

Prof Horner
July 8th, 2023 - 11:51amWell I agree on Ian Levine. I get the impression that he is not someone you would not want to know. We are all grateful for him saving episodes like The Daleks. So his place like Phil Morris in Doctor Who history is assured. As for Gary Russell, he is one of the good guys. I don’t agree with him on eighties Who and what happened, but I respect him. I remember in the early eighties getting his fanzine Shada, one of the better ones of the period and discovering he was the same guy who appeared in The Phoenix and the carpet and of course Famous Five. I believe that Gary along with the great RTD, is the same age as me . You could say we are the second generation of fans who were born the same year as the series , but were too young to remember the first episode. Unlike Levine. I really don’t care what they do with the animations as long as they make them. Of course you can still criticize them, Web of Fear episode three is truly awful. But the idea that Gary’s animations is somehow disrespectful to older fans is just silly and sad .
James
July 8th, 2023 - 4:50pmHow come hmv is selling season 12 for 39.99 for the Ltd edition and yet the standard editoon is being sold for 40.99? Thought the standards were supposed to be cheaper?
Harold Shand
July 8th, 2023 - 4:54pmIf Mark Ayres is working 12 hour days, maybe he is working on a late audio addition to S20. Dolby Atmos for the five Doctors? May explain the delay
daz
July 8th, 2023 - 10:13pmJames. Most likely as they want to shift the stock they found in their warehouse as they take up more room as the boxes are bigger than the standards/ other Blu-ray’s.
They could be stock with the misprinted Season 10 artwork too.

July 10th, 2023 - 8:34amI’m worried it will be a drought of anything new until B&M start Septemberish then the flood gates will open, better start saving chaps! I’ve started saving B&M gift cards towards the upcoming sets…

July 10th, 2023 - 10:16pm@ who is who what makes you say there is a trailer this Thursday

July 11th, 2023 - 6:47amThursday would be plausible, eyes peeled at 3pm

July 11th, 2023 - 12:20pmQuite plausible because the USA version on s9 is released this week.

July 11th, 2023 - 10:32pmInteresting. There’s been no hints so far this week that anything is coming, maybe the bbc are tad busy this week!
Either way I’m sure it’ll be announced soon. The amazing people who are working on them as we speak do an amazing job and no matter how long they take I’ll be ordering mine! Bring on Season…

July 12th, 2023 - 3:23amI admit myself I know when a set comes up straight away as if ur like myself subscribe too hmv news email it always states when it’s up for preorder straight away especially for me it’s a shame they don’t really stock any new sets in stores much anymore esp I tried hmv Bristol and they had no stoke apart from online
Who is Who?
July 12th, 2023 - 11:34amHMV stores get a limited amount of the limited ed sets, some are reserved by shoppers and that might be why you dont see them. In my local they only get three sets. Not many for a town of 70000, plus nearby big city.
I was told thurs by a contact who doesnt always get things right, but they have good knowledge mixing in Who circles.

July 4th, 2023 - 6:46pmThe Five-ish Doctors Reboot Sequel for the 60th has been SCRAPPED says Peter Davison!
I wonder if this is an RTD decision as I think he has final say on everything now
WhoKnows
July 5th, 2023 - 4:09pmWell hopefully it gets them focussed on releasing another collection set instead…..
James
July 5th, 2023 - 4:38pmOr because rtd has them appearing in the actual 60th episodes in one or another…maybe return of the Doctors of the Edge
Gordon
July 5th, 2023 - 6:31pmIt was probably not going to be anywhere near as good as the original so I’m ok with it being a one and done. I imagine them trying to sneak into the 60th would have far less effect especially seeing as they were just in power of the doctor. Probably would have been something else.
@whoknows This wouldn’t effect the collection sets either way.
WhoMe
July 5th, 2023 - 7:10pm@gordon – if PD and co are working on another project such as five doctors reboot that meant they was not doing any behind the sofa, and other extras they could have been filming instead.
As it all takes time it would be good to get another addition before BluRay discs stop been produced ( 13 more volumes to with only two or three per year its going to take a long time before they are all released )
Jake E
July 5th, 2023 - 7:24pmPeter Davision has said this as the reason for not doing it:
“I came up with an idea. It was deemed, by those I showed it to, as utterly unacceptable, although I thought it was very funny! It’s a different world now. And I am always – I wouldn’t say – pushing the boundaries. My sense of humour is maybe a little out of sync with the sense of humour that now exists…”
“So, in the end, it became very clear to me that there were too many compromises I’d be asked to make in the making of it and I thought it just best to leave it alone – because the original was perfect!”
– Basically he’s saying it won’t work for the PC crowd
daz
July 5th, 2023 - 9:16pmI probably would have enjoyed whatever PD had planned.
Unfortunately everybody gets offended far too easily nowadays (even if they haven’t watched the thing they are offended by) and with cancel culture having a big impact, broadcasters, especially the BBC, are playing it safe.
For example, I’d still like Captain Jack to return and meet the 15th Doctor but it is highly unlikely now, especially when he should have been in Power of the Doctor too.

July 5th, 2023 - 10:02pmI agree Daz the “Woke” brigade will be crawling all over it.
Get over yourselves people, if it’s supposed to be silly – that’s all it is.
No themes, no hidden messaging or parallels – it’s just silly for the sake of being silly
Then again, that too is also largely not allowed now is it
Even though I am an 80’s child, give me the 60’s/70’s any day
Gordon
July 5th, 2023 - 11:03pm@whome Things like filming dates for behind the sofa etc are planned months ahead due to availability and other factors. As far as I know they are already filming extras for next year so even if they were to do another fiveish doctors it wouldn’t hold up filming extras for upcoming sets. Plus in the case of Peter colin and Sylvester there isn’t much left for them for them to do extras wise. Only about 2 seasons left between the 3 of them. Peter already has s19 and s20 extras in the bank. Warriors of the deep bts is already done according to Janet as well. Colin has already done both his full seasons and it wouldn’t be a shock if bts and interviews for twin dilemma were also in the can. Sylvester only has s25 left. Also for non 80s sets if they are not available they can always get other cast members

July 6th, 2023 - 3:55pmUnfortunately for them, their “not seen” pictures are all fan shots that were floating around on Twitter a year ago. Just usual clickbait nonsense to rile up a comments section complaining about Doctor Who and the BBC being “woke nonsense” for (checks notes) casting a straight, white, blonde, English woman as the companion. So maybe it’s the perfect place for some of the posters here to go to and let the rest of us discuss the show’s merchandise as intended?

July 4th, 2023 - 8:58amFrom the Doctor Who Target Books Facebook page
“Hello everyone, sometime this year I’m going to begin production on a long-overdue definitive documentary about Target books for The Collection Blu-ray range. If anyone has any interesting personal stories related to collecting Target Doctor Who books that you would like to share, or any rare/interesting memorabilia, original artwork, or anything else of possible interest, then please leave a little reply to this post and I may be in touch. I’ll also be approaching authors/artists/behind-the-scenes people closer to the shoot dates (which are TBC). This documentary won’t be out for quite some time – we are banking content for many releases at the moment – but it’ll be worth the wait.”
D84
July 4th, 2023 - 10:04amSounds promising in that the range is projected to continue / complete.
For me i would say this seems to be something that would fit on a “Wilderness Years” set – thoughts?
Prof Horner
July 4th, 2023 - 11:49amWell I the this feature on Target books is great news. I remember picking up my first target book, Doctor Who and the Giant Robot in WH Smiths in Bradford in 1975 . Must have been just been published. The Daleks and The Cybermen soon followed, I think in Blackpool . I think I even I got Green Death at the local post office! Soon got all that was available. Back then they cost 35p! Back then you didn’t know what was coming out next. So a trip to WH Smiths was great fun hoping the next one would be out . I always hoped for the older Doctors stories coming out . The Web of Fear was very exciting! I hope it won’t be too many years before this feature is on a box set . I suspect it will be on season 13 . Which maybe the last seventies set.
Gordon
July 4th, 2023 - 11:56amDefinitely feels like something that would fit perfectly on that. Btw it was Pete McTighe that posted it.
Pete X
July 4th, 2023 - 6:15pmDunno. I think more likely to be for the Season 11 box set.
Target republished the 3 earlier novelisations , … Daleks, Zarbi and Crusade in 1973. Their first original DW novelisations, Autons and Cave Monsters were published in Jan 1974, during the broadcast of S11.
The Target imprint had been absorbed into Virgin by the time of the wilderness years started. I think that a doc on the Virgin books (the new and missing adventures, maybe the post 1986 novelisations) would be more fitting on a Wilderness Years boxset.

July 5th, 2023 - 3:25pmI DMed Toby Hadoke on Instagram a few months back and suggested a series of documentaries for the Collection boxsets on the ‘unsung actors’ of Doctor Who, i.e. actors who have been a mainstay in the classic series for years but only had minor parts. Max Faulkner, Terry Walsh, Pat Gorman, Alan Chuntz etc. I don’t think an awful lot has been documented about these actors.
I also suggested a documentary series taking a retrospective look at the best guest performances in Doctor Who, e.g. Julian Glover, Bernard Kay, John Abineri etc.
I didn’t get a reply, but it’ll be interesting to see if they come about.

July 3rd, 2023 - 2:38pmI am very late to this news on Neil Patrick Harris, but I’m amazed how since RTD has returned, and please don’t image search this, but some horrible “cake” Harris had made of Amy Winehouse in 2011?
I understand Harris did apologize last Year, just incredible how after all this time since his casting in Doctor Who, not a word of this reached me as a fan on social media until this afternoon. Yet any other effiness in the world of Doctor Who, any old school fan will point it out instantly today.
As I say, Harris has made a formal apology on what happened, but it’s just the most bizarre thing I have read in a very long time of a Doctor Who cast member.

July 3rd, 2023 - 4:31pmI am in two minds, as it’s obviously quite a sick gag and immensely disrespectful.
That said, I have a very dark sense of humour so I wouldn’t have been offended, and I believe that it was a private party so not intended for the general public. What consenting adults do behind closed doors is none of my concern.

July 1st, 2023 - 1:35pmWell it would be nice If someone has been secretly working on Daleks master plan animation for the last couple of years. Ready for the anniversary. But as that isn’t going to happen. I will be happy with The Smugglers animation ( a favorite of

July 1st, 2023 - 3:57pmPersonally I would be ecstatic just to get The Smugglers audio cleaned up, with fresh photo/telesnap scans/Josh snares style photo comps, as is possible. June 30th, 2023 - 7:27pmCONFIRMED by Paul Vanezis that NO missing episodes have been returned!!
Here’s his quote:
“But you go away for a couple of hours, come back and find that the kids have trashed the place.
Except you’re not kids, are you.
This is one of the reasons why I shouldn’t have said anything in the first place about episodes being in private collections.
The films I have seen are still with that collector and there is no chance anytime soon of them being handed over to anyone.
The Daily Mirror is a clickbait factory for this kind of stuff and their so-called exclusive isn’t. I first mentioned these films several years ago on a podcast.
I made the point then as now that it makes sense for episodes to turn up with private collectors. It’s happened before and it will happen again.
Nothing has changed since other than for Philip to confirm that he has been in contact with collectors who also have episodes. He doesn’t know who I’m
talking to and I don’t know who he’s talking to. So there is nothing in the Mirror ‘exclusive’ that is ‘exclusive’. It is meaningless. Anyone with just
the minutest amount of intelligence should be able to see that. Have some of you got a switch attached to your heads that you just flick which stops you
thinking rationally?”
– I tried posting this for you all this morning but my message hasn’t shown up for some reason so I’ll try again 🙂
Rex Farrel
June 30th, 2023 - 11:51pmI’m assuming he posted that on what was once dubbed “The Missing Brains forum”? Of course he was foolish to mention it, because he knows full well what fans are like. (Unless he was trying to smoke someone out? It’s a silly gaff for him to make otherwise.) And because of his words when Enemy and Web came back, people are now going to accuse him of lying or going to read between the lines to see whatever they want.
It is an update that he’s seen the films though, as he’d first said he’d only been told about them. Funny thing is, the owner apparently doesn’t like Dr Who but still bought two episodes and refused to show/loan/sell/swap them – that sounds like a hoarder, something the old RT were keen to dismiss the idea of. I don’t have any Who, but I’ll happily swap the banal stuff I have for something I’d enjoy more – particularly if I could have my pick from the archives (my stuff isn’t that good though, and would barely fall into the “make a note where it is” category if that).
The relationship between PV and PM continues to intrigue. I can’t help thinking of Uncle Ian’s proposed location for Inferno, and that PM might actually believe material could be located there. (That’s a joke for the old timers.)

June 30th, 2023 - 11:14pmHey-ho, no real surprise and probably best that until the BBC say otherwise with clips and confirm DVD release dates, I’ll just ignore the speculation and the click bait will stay unclicked….. until the next rumour lol
Andrew R
June 26th, 2023 - 12:35pmSomeone would really have to check dates as I’m going completely off memory of the previous releases, but I feel like for the past few years the trailer for the new set has been released around the time that the previous set has been released in the US. We’ve been one full set behind the UK for the past few years and I feel like trailers for the next sets have been released generally around the time that we’re expecting the previous release. We have season 9 coming out here on July 11, so hopefully that means an impending trailer for the next season. Again, I obviously could be completely wrong given a multitude of factors including memory and not doing a deep dive into the dates.
D84
June 26th, 2023 - 12:41pmIt feels like an announcement should come anytime – the previous set has been out 3 months already and all rumours suggest that S20 is due out in “summer 23” that’s now arrived so can’t be too much longer surely.
Also, what about those animations – you would think we would have newson those if they are due out in November – that’s only 4 and a bit months away now
daz
June 26th, 2023 - 3:13pmI’m not sure the animations are actually coming out this year unless work started on them last year? I expect them to be officially announced in the run up to the 60th though and pre-orders started.
The colourisation of whatever has been chosen could easily broadcast on BBC4 on the 23rd November with the 3 specials taking up Saturday 11th/18th/25th on BBC1.
I still think we’ll get Season 20 before Summer ends on 23rd September (most likely in August), then if we are lucky, another set in November (16 or 25 if end ups being a shorter Season to have 3 in the Anniversary year)
We’ll get the 60th Specials collection in December too with all the extras they’ve filmed. DT has recently filmed more stuff which could be BBC1 idents for example.
Prof Horner
June 26th, 2023 - 7:10pmOr alternatively we could have just one more season this year, which has to be a big season .Which can only be season 6.
James
June 27th, 2023 - 12:17pmProfHorner…season 6 quite possible. With only space pirates short with 5 eps missing/possibly only 2 epa. As maybe 4,5 and 6 found according to rumours. That would just leave 1 and 3 to recon for a quick release as season majority complete. If not animate 1 & 3 and tidy up yhe other 4.
Apparently myth makers 2 and 4, smugglers 2 and 4 (plus maybe already being animated), highlanders ep 2, and space pirates 4, have been found either by luck or death of private collectors according to rumours. Fingers crossed as was the same last anniversary year.
Maybe that’s why they’ve been reluctant in doing some of the 60s series.
Prof Horner
June 27th, 2023 - 1:14pmI hope it is true too James. As I said before, they could get a way with some sort of photo reconstruction for episodes 1and 3. Also as I have said before would Space Pirates be released separately first? As for the other alleged returns. Myth Makers would give us another much needed season 3 story. The Smugglers is a favorite of mine and another step in the completion of season 4. The Highlanders episode 2 would be the earliest Troughton episode and of course Jamie’s. So we will see. To miss quote a certain Mr Morris, I think the may wind is blowing in the right direction. Or is it just wishful thinking again. It’s fun to dream.
Rob
June 27th, 2023 - 3:23pmlots of releases are being left unintentionally to end of the year, must be something special this autumn. wonder what this could be?
animations
collection set
action figures
and more??!!!!
Rory
June 27th, 2023 - 4:53pm@prof, if we did get episodes returned, my preference would be for ones that haven’t already been animated. I’d rather have another episode of Wheel in Space over episode four of Tenth Planet.
Heresy, I know, but having the animations means those serials are already viable. Adding more from serials that have no animations but have a couple of episodes missing just makes those serials more viable for animation.
Obviously anything returned is a bonus, but I’d prefer returns that don’t plug gaps that have already been covered by animation.
Prof Horner
June 27th, 2023 - 7:08pmMy thoughts exactly Rory. As much as I would like to see episodes of Evil of the Daleks. Some more missing episodes of Daleks master plan would be better., as it would make it closer to completion .

June 25th, 2023 - 12:34pmThank you for the heads up, much appreciated.
Just curious, where did you find the info? I checked Amazon and JB HI-FI and found nothing. I did find it on Sanity but it’s $156.99 almost TWICE the price as previous sets! I know times are expensive and I could expect a increase of $10-$20 due to extra costs and inflation but to double is absolutely bonkers.
Also you wouldn’t happen to know the distributor by chance?
Jake E
June 25th, 2023 - 5:11pmI seem to recall it said Universal Sony Pictures Australia but I could be wrong.
No idea when pre-orders would go live
Of course please be aware I don’t have insider info just what people have posted elsewhere so I make no promises
Jake E
June 25th, 2023 - 5:18pmHopefully for you Australians that’s just a placeholder price that will go down because that is ridiculous.
Cheaper to import the UK sets I’m sure
2e-Rex
June 25th, 2023 - 7:27pmThank you for the info, helped clear a few things up.
Yes, I imported a UK set a few weeks ago when I feared that there was no longer going to be an Australian release. A bit more expensive than usual but no where near twice the price, thank goodness.
Hopefully this means that future classic collection boxsets and the modern series will continue to be released on physical media in Australia. A little bit worried they might not because of the Disney+ deal.

June 23rd, 2023 - 3:15pmDifferent people asking the same question every day or two doesn’t make it arrive any faster. When there is an update you can bet someone will quickly post about it. June 24th, 2023 - 11:54am@rex Farrel what happened with the resurrection of the Daleks hysteria
Rex Farrel
June 25th, 2023 - 4:13amLewis: I’m surprised no one else here remembers it.
It was revealed that Resurrection was the latest dvd being worked on, and the number of people repeatedly demanding release dates, articles and official announcements led BBC DVD to ban the Restoration Team from saying anything at all about upcoming releases. BBC DVD as it was then even stopped telling the RT what the next release was and removed some decision making from them. So they were working on several upcoming titles with no idea what was out next, and couldn’t talk about anything unreleased – all due to certain “fans” not being able to behave despite repeated cautions. And that’s still the situation we have now, pretty much. It’s exactly the same model.
The other related incident was an agent learning from online blabbermouths that one of their client’s works was being readied for release before they’d been officially told. The result delayed the release of a 4th Doctor story and helped lead to the increased secrecy restrictions.
Several releases actually suffered as a result, without the knowledge – and collections – of certain fans. Even the Season sets so far haven’t always made things right.

June 22nd, 2023 - 9:36amNotwithstanding the work that goes into these sets, the momentum behind the Collection range has well and truly stalled. Season 9 was a disappointment – so little offered in the way of new material, though the episode picture quality was good.

June 23rd, 2023 - 9:37amSummer runs until 23rd September so if we get a release on 18th September for Season 20 then what PD has been saying to fans is correct.
I still think we’ll get 3 this year. Along with the 60th Specials in December. But if 6 comes out in 2024 that could mean just 2 next year.
We’ll get all 26 eventually, just got to be patient.
Samuel
June 23rd, 2023 - 10:22amI will say regarding the Collection, I hope we don’t get a repeat of Season 18 standard where the edit corrections were specifically made on that set, while anyone with the limited set and errors without a retail receipt and zero luck getting through to the BBC could go whistle.
If Season 2 standard fixes the spelling mistakes, without any disc replacement offer for the limited Season 2 at all, then that would have to force me to reconsider the standards, as I simply don’t have the coin to buy both ranges when the main range should be definitive for actually watching.
Prof Horner
June 23rd, 2023 - 10:30amQuestion is, how many weeks do they need after announcement before release? It was about seven weeks after season 9 was announced when it was released. where it was over three months between with season 2. Season 20 could be released only a month after announcement surely? In which case if it’s a August release, then there is still time for a third release in December.
We are almost into the second half of the year. So let’s hope for some nice surprises in time for the anniversary.
James
June 23rd, 2023 - 12:22pmWhat were the issues in Season 18 and Season 2 that were needing to be corrected?
Jake E
June 23rd, 2023 - 2:02pmSamuel, I agree it’s a bit annoying when you have the Limited Edition which is supposed to be the definitive edition (and it still is) that has errors on it that then get corrected for the cheaper standard edition.
Having said that I managed to get replacement discs again as recently as the beginning of this year for the Limited Editions that needed them and when it comes to spelling mistakes to me it’s a bit of a “oh well” situation. Shame it’s happened but doesn’t ruin my enjoyment of the episodes or the sets.
The Limited Edition packaging makes the Limited ones the must have version for me regardless. So gorgeous in protective plastic on my shelf 🙂
Anonymous
June 23rd, 2023 - 2:27pmThey are superior but those protective plastic covers for me are just more faffing about getting them out. I just want to open the box and put it on.
It would be easier if they had full seasons boxed and on a flash drive you could just stick in the back of the TV to save time.
Jake E
June 23rd, 2023 - 3:26pmAnonymous, sounds like you want BritBox.
I like the protective plastic sleeves. It’s easy to get them in and out and protects them from dust and accidental liquid etc.
Very worthy investment in keeping them clean and perfect
Samuel
June 23rd, 2023 - 3:26pm@James – if you google “Millennium effect Doctor Who” go to the first site, then take a look at the errors on Seasons 2 & 18.
@Jake E – Don’t get me wrong, the Limiteds look lovely on a shelf. I wish there was an disc replacement programme for the Limited range that you could apply for, with online/scanned proof of purchase. After inspection of receipt, be able to order any corresponding future replacement discs for any standard season specific discs that have been revised in any way at all.
Since the very start, I’ve wanted the Collection range to succeed big time. We have a new era of Doctor Who coming in fast, there’s fans new and old that desperately want a complete set of 1963-2023, for all sorts of reasons, be it getting into the history of the show, or that the older copies are either megabucks to accumulate, or just not viable to properly enjoy in my opinion, such as S1-4 Blu Ray, yucky sound balance and frame rate stretch.
What I’m saying is that I believe fans want one single Collection set of Doctor Who, have confidence to invest into the main product, knowing it is the best content. For me, that’s having confidence that, even if I get spelling errors or picture / sound blips, at least I could have access to reprint discs identical to the later standards. Unfortunately with Season 18, that’s simply not the case, you have to buy both editions.
I don’t feel it’s fair to seriously knock the release deadlines. Restoration needs time, care, and attention, which I feel these sets truly have been given. It’s more that, since we don’t have any dvd trailers anymore, no one outside the know-it-all bubble has a single clue what the heck is going on right now with this range, and it’s been almost half a year. I’m personally strongly passionate for the 60’s seasons, and it fills me with so much doubt over Season 3 even being looked at whatsoever. At least we got Galaxy 4, The Ark, The Gunfighters and Lost in Time on dvd and Blu Ray, but from the sounds of things in the last couple of years, there’s apparently a chance the sound recordings for The Daleks’ Master Plan wouldn’t be considered workable for a restoration, which is silly depressing to read.
The very best thing to come out of this range for me is definitely the one on one interview with William Russell on Season 2, and I feel so glad to have pre ordered that set as I feel the sheer quality paid off.
I just question, what happens if the standard sets going forwards will be the ‘revised and corrected’ editions when it comes to the actual video/sound content. That swings it for me, that’s the actual product.
Anonymous
June 23rd, 2023 - 4:11pmJake i dont want Britbox.I like physical media I wouldnt beable to access all the extra content either. The standards in the plastics are one thing but with the limited cases its just more hassle to get them out. My only beef with thel imiteds was the precarious and wearing card thats why i opted for standard releases. A flash drive with all content would be easier all round.
Jake E
June 23rd, 2023 - 6:04pmAnonymous, I’m referring to where you say flash drive would be easier then you might as well go for Britbox streaming I would say if you are going to do straight through your TV rather than change a disc but Blu-Rays are better of course.
Samuel, I see what you are saying. Season 18 does have a replacement disc available via email if that’s the one you are on about.
Unfortunately as it’s quite a small number of basically just fans that make these sets then mistakes will happen. I doubt the BBC cares about these sets too much, they would probably prefer everyone subscribe to Britbox instead.
We’re lucky to have these sets. I don’t expect there’s some big Quality Assurance team. It’s the fans who buy the Limited sets who notice these mistakes and then they can make corrections for the Standards. Annoying but it is what it is.
And if the mistake is bigger than a spelling error then I’m sure they would do another free disc replacement service again
But anyway up to you what you buy. I prefer Limited packaging and I want the team who make them to take their time with each set to bring us the best product with the least errors possible 🙂
Samuel
June 23rd, 2023 - 9:05pm@Jake E – Oh with every single home media of anything ever made there’s no doubt mistakes and errors, that isn’t the fault of the Limited Editions at all, it’s the BBC’s decisions afterwards that are the problem.
You mention Season 18 – the disc replacement programme does not include spelling error corrections for the script-writers credits for several serials, not just episodes. Added to that, credit sequences themselves loop on end for Logopolis when watching with updated vfx.
The standard version of season 18 repairs all of the above – you don’t get any of these repairs on the replacement disc programme, barring the sound mistakes on Warrior’s Gate. That’s it. If you want the revised and improved content, you also would need to buy the standard edition.
Another example is Season 12 – the replacement programme is eiffy as best for multiple reasons that are too lengthy to get into. Therefore, you would also have to buy the standard edition to get the repaired content.
The 60’s seasons are a massive deal to me when it comes to the collection. It’s the one decade that seriously should get the most focus in getting it to home media, all seasons 1-6. If in a year plus time we get a standard Season 2 with revisions and modifications similar to Seasons 12 & 18, without a disc replacement programme, since I’m collecting and pre ordering these sets, as lovely as they look with the artwork and booklet, I just have to question the actual content if an updated version is just going to turn up 12-24 months later.
Love these boxsets regardless, it’s just such a tricky situation in my view.
Anonymous
June 24th, 2023 - 12:59amA fancy flash drive or drives in a deluxe box containing all the extras, might be a way forward, best of both worlds, rather than take out disc, put into player, wait through all intros including select audio navigation etc.
No all i was saying with the protective sleeves its just something else you have to remove to get into the discs. Just so time consuming but i,m sure it does look great on the shelves.
Samuel
June 24th, 2023 - 10:25am@Anonymous – especially if there were any authoring mistakes; if you sent in a payment ref, you would receive a temporary link to the revised files.
If you opened up the stick on windows/mac/linux, the Collection could have a little computer exe, load it, put the link in, and via internet, could replace the error file. That way the link’s encrypted within software, and would be a cleaner alternative to buying up a ton of big storage blu ray discs and authoring systems maybe.
NoMore
June 26th, 2023 - 7:39am@samuel
No way on earth or on Gallifrey would they do electronic files such as an exe file. Flash Drives do you realise how large the HD files would be per episode.
You just increased the costs dramatically and created an even older legacy product,
Samuel
June 26th, 2023 - 11:07am@NoMore – Then 4K / max storage discs would then be alternative, except you can’t market it as “4k picture” obviously, though clearly that didn’t stop the “HD picture” marketing of the Blu Rays.
4K discs would be purely used for storage size, I assume halfing the Collection discs down per season, stick the booklet and artwork pdfs onto a disc, in a standard 4k case, you’d then put 7 or 8 cases together and that’s Tom Baker’s era (3.5 standard blu ray cases equivalent).
If you want it even smaller, then I suppose a single thin SSD, housed in a Nintendo Switch style case (though I imagine that’s moreso further into the future).
GallifreyStands
June 26th, 2023 - 11:18am@Samuel
4k discs would triple the price if not more you would be looking at £100+ per season which would totally kill the sets dead.
Jake E
June 26th, 2023 - 11:39amSamuel no offence mate but your ideas are terrible.
We’ve got the Blu-Ray discs and Britbox is an option. Just stick with those and stop pushing for other stuff because you ain’t gonna get it 🙂

June 20th, 2023 - 9:23pmLike the latest missing episodes rumour today, I’ll believe it now when I actually see. Probably more chance of a missing episode find that another blu-ray announcement. Hey-ho
Samuel
June 20th, 2023 - 11:34pmI don’t condone any harassment of any private owners of missing episodes that have very likely decided for many, many years not to duplicate the material; However as fans, it’s our freedom of speech to call it what it is; it’s ruining the experience for fans old and new that want to appreciate the 1960’s, and every single person that worked hard on those episodes in the day. Their work cannot be fully appreciated. I know too many fans that cannot stick audios / animations / narrations, because it just isn’t the real thing visually. I’m not saying every single episode may be out there, but I’m very convinced many are being kept purposefully in 2023. It’s not cool or impressive, just hope you’re reading this, give yourselves a pat on the back for ruining it for people investing their hearts and souls into this show. Well done you.
Jake E
June 21st, 2023 - 8:18amGuys there aren’t any more episodes.
People need to stop hyping stuff up and posting this everywhere
Prof Horner
June 21st, 2023 - 12:04pmWell if it’s the same rumor that I have heard. It raises an interesting point. If Space Pirates 4,5and 6 have been found. Would that delay Season 6 box set ? No doubt the BBC would want to release it separately with some sort photo reconstruction for episodes 1and 3. There seems to be plenty of photos from episodes 1.
As always with these rumors, you believe it when you see it.
Bobby Fackrell
June 21st, 2023 - 12:19pmJake you cannot say there are not anymore, anymore than I can say there are.
It is feasible some may in the hands of private collectors and it is also true they are under no obligation to give them to anyone.
The biggest concern for the hope of episodes being returned is the age of the copies and the film reaching end of life if not copied
Rex Farrel
June 21st, 2023 - 1:54pmWe’ll either have a nice little (definitely little) surprise nearer to November, or there are likely no decent leads out there. None of the hoarder stories really work if you look at them closely.

June 21st, 2023 - 5:44pmProf that was a iTunes/ Britbox issue. It’s not confirmation of more episodes

June 20th, 2023 - 6:53pmSo no announcement today, no really surprise. I starting to worry we will only get two again this year again hope I am wrong.
As for nu Who, it seems to me after Tennant it was case of diminishing returns. I am not one of those sad old gits who scream woke at every opportunity at things they don’t understand . But I only RTD of the nu showrunners seems to understand what makes Doctor Who work and what doesn’t. I hope him and the new guy can take Doctor Who in exciting new direction .

June 20th, 2023 - 12:44pmI hope we get another two sets this year. I really wish things could be speeded up a bit but I guess they want to get it right as these sets are definitive. I look forward to having a complete set 1-26. plus Wilderness years? So then I can watch all the classics in order.

June 16th, 2023 - 9:15pmSeason 15?
Yeah it is a mixed bag, love horror, and Sunmakers. Image is good as I recall. Invisible enemy and invasion of time not so much. Underworld is underrated with some great model work.
Bobby Fackrell
June 17th, 2023 - 7:02amIt might be because like 9 is has such a damp finish with the last couple of stories after a strong start
I also might be because Robert Holmes leaves halfway through
The Invisible Enemy is a bit better than I have given it credit for in the past
Prof Horner
June 17th, 2023 - 9:27amI find the ending of Invisible Enemy highly dubious. Why doesn’t The Doctor cure Lowe and the others like he did with the professor instead of murdering them. The season has it’s moments, but it is big step down from the season before. Yes know a lot of the problems are outside Williams control , strikes and inflation (what’s new?) But Season 16 is better though. More consistently. I know Prowl hates power of Kroll , but it is really not as bad as all that. Still each to it’s own. Still both these seasons are better than 25(sorry Bobby!)
Bobby Fackrell
June 17th, 2023 - 10:01amProf would prefer a more colourful and camp ending to invisible enemy something reminiscent of his favourite series, 25.
Don’t go me wrong 15 pales to series 16. Series 16 is the best Graham Williams series by two days and nights on Horseback
Prowl 1701
June 17th, 2023 - 3:51pmHard to pick a favorite Williams season as I like all three. Even 17 I find really good overall. The Nimon be praised.
Basil Funkenstein
June 18th, 2023 - 10:04pmI enjoy Tom’s era altogether entirely as a whole. Yes it has drab moments here and there but I find it overall to be the most consistently brilliant era of Classic Who. It has everything. Seasons 12-18 are so different to anything before and after. They build and expand on the qualities of Doctors 1-3 and pave the way for the stories of 5-7. Tom Baker’s era mixes the best of the 70’s and 80’s in a perfect blend of Action, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Gothic and traditional Horror, Satire, and Science fiction. Even to this day people still see Tom as the definition of The Doctor. He’s iconic.
Don’t get me wrong I adore ALL of Doctor Who both Classic and Modern but Tom’s era will always be my favourite, well, joint first with Peter Capaldi’s era. 4 and 12 are my top number 1 favourites.
I’d love to hear people’s opinions on their favourite Doctor and era.
It’ll be interesting to see if we get Season 16 next instead of Season 20. A set for Doctors 3, 4, and 5 for the 60th anniversary seems apt, followed by a Troughton and a McCoy in 2024.
Philip Shaw
June 19th, 2023 - 8:13amGraeme Williams seasons all start out brilliantly, Horror of Fang rock, Ribos operation, Destiny of the Daleks and City of death. The first few stories are where he spends the money and towards the end of the season, usually the last story which is stretched to six parts is so cringingly poor and cheap looking. The Invasion of time, The Armageddon Factor are in my opinion terrible, even Shada which was cancelled looked to have been on the cheap!
I know money was tight and Tom was more awkward than ever.
Jake E
June 19th, 2023 - 8:22amBasil for me Pertwee’s era is the best. It’s perfection not bad story. I haven’t seen Season 11 yet but seasons 7-10 are masterpieces and he’s the best Classic Doctor
Basil Funkenstein
June 19th, 2023 - 9:19amI appreciate Pertwee’s era very much Jake E, he’s about middle in my favourite Doctors list, and it does have some absolutely stellar stories but for me personally I just enjoy Tom’s era more.
Prof Horner
June 19th, 2023 - 10:05amI think you will find they did Horns of Nimons on the cheap so could spend more money on Shada which backfired because of the strike. Invasion of Time is cheap and tacky , but Armageddon Factor is ok. Season 17 bad reputation is because it end on Horns which it wasn’t supposed to. I actually find Horns great fun to watch , which I didn’t at the time. Here hoping for announcement soon on the next box set. Season 20 , 16 ,6 and then 25 for Bobby.
Bobby Fackrell
June 19th, 2023 - 12:24pmInteresting points, I agree with Prof I think Armageddon is okay, I might even say good. Destiny of the Daleks is dreadful however yet City of Death is a masterpiece I do agree Shada is so over-rated and regarded highly due to its infamy of not being finished. The location filming was not bad but the studio blocks in the can were not great. It is not one of Douglas Adams’ best efforts but does have some typically hilarious lines, City of Death is much better.
As Eccleston often says Doctor Who is only as good as the writing. The strongest era’s have solid creative teams like Dicks/Letts and Hinchcliffe/Holmes, the first three years of Tom were definitely the best because of this team and 15 starts strongly because Holmes is still there.
18 is decent because of Christopher H Bidmead and Letts keeping an eye on JNT.
The favourite era question though the 60s, probably series 1 being perhaps my favourite series
Prof Horner
June 19th, 2023 - 12:51pmI agree with you Bobby about JNT . Things started to go wrong with the series in season 20 when JNT was left to his own devices. Saward was a poor script editor.as season 22 attest.his video nasty season. Strangely enough I think Cartmel was a good script editor after season 24 when he found his feet. It’s not stories of season 25 and 26 I dislike. In my case it’s a case of nice stories, shame about The Doctor.
Rory
June 19th, 2023 - 3:07pm@Prof, agree with you on Cartmel, if not on McCoy (each to their own). S25 and 26 were some of the strongest stories the series had had in years, and could have led to a new renaissance if the BBC had any confidence in the series instead of burying it against Coronation Street.
Jake E
June 19th, 2023 - 3:38pmI thought Season 22 and 23 especially 22 were top notch seasons personally
Bobby Fackrell
June 19th, 2023 - 6:04pmOh Prof we both love Troughton and we both think the Saward/JNT years were pretty horrific, we are more a like then we know
Series 18 and 19 were really good. Saward was like Douglas Adams and Steven Moffat could write great individual stories but was a terrible script editor/show runner
What sums up the importance of the writing is how good Davison is in stories like Caves and Enlightenment but because so much of his era was serviced by poor scripts his Doctor never really got to develop into what it could have been.
Colin Baker, lovely man and good actor, never had a chance, Saward thought he was mis-cast from the beginning so what hope did he have?
McCoy, and I’m bias was the best Doctor since Tom Baker and largely due to Cartmel having a good relationship with actor, producer and his team of writers
Basil Funkenstein
June 19th, 2023 - 10:05pmI completely agree Bobby. I think the next best era after Tom’s and Capaldi’s was Sylvester’s seasons.
Season 24 was odd but enjoyable and a relieving breath of fresh air after seasons 22 and 23, which I still enjoy parts of but to a lesser degree, but seasons 25 and 26 were incredible and if it was allowed to continue it could have become some truly incredible science fiction drama.
Bobby Fackrell
June 20th, 2023 - 6:20amWell you nearly completely agree, I like Capaldi as an actor and he was a good Doctor but you won’t find any Moffat series near the top of my lists
Series 25 is Prof’s favourite, every day he checks this site to see if it has been announced yet!
Happiness will Prevail
Prowl1701
June 20th, 2023 - 4:05pmI have to agree with Bobby. Capaldi is a great actor and a great doctor, but his era is a mixed bag, every one of his series. He has some amazing episodes but also some the worst the show has ever done.

June 20th, 2023 - 6:44pmDelta and the Bannermen trumps the entire Moffat era
Basil Funkenstein
June 20th, 2023 - 7:26pmI can see and understand why people dislike the Moffatt era but I never stopped watching during that time even during the worst episodes… Chibnall’s era however, yeesh, I’ve tried numerous times to start watching that and I can never make it past Jodie’s first three episodes.
Prowl 1701
June 20th, 2023 - 8:02pmDelta and the bannermen certainly doesn’t best some of Capaldi’s best stories like heaven sent, thin ice, mummy on the orient express, or flatline, buts it’s miles better than a lot of capaldis worst like kill the moon, in the forest of the night, most of series 9, and most of the monk trilogy.
As for Whittaker, I find series 12 to be consistently good actually (terrible finally aside). I especially like the Tesla episode, can you hear me, and the haunting of villa something.
Series 11 is really bad for the most part, that spiders episode is the worst, avoid it. Just rewatched Tsubaru conundrum (or whatever) again and didn’t think much of it, a review is coming. Demons of the Punjab and kerblam! Are decently good.
Bobby Fackrell
June 20th, 2023 - 8:51pmChibs over Moffat all day long, he completely got the concept of the original show and was the closest to 1960s episodes he even virtually brought the Historicals back, what he did was excellent it was just (ironically for Doctor Who) out of its time and didn’t sit well with modern audiences however I’m the opposite I think the first series was the best by far, second was decent, Flux started well but lost me, might need to re-watch it, the most recent Dalek special was decent the other couple were poor
Prof Horner
June 20th, 2023 - 8:55pmWell Bobby me old mate, no era of the programme could sink any lower than Delta and the Bannerman. I still shudder at sight of Bonnie Langford with that ghastly grin on her face, as the bus wobbles towards the Earth . Then dropping out of the sky and landing next to the holiday camp, with nobody apparently noticing . Truly the series couldn’t Sink any lower than that.
