6 unreleased sets and Season 9 which is released

I’m betting one of those biographies is for troughton, I know the one being edited is suppose to be 90 minutes, that’s longer than showman and the Elisabeth sladen one, so makes sense. Though that is just guess work.

I also expect one of the biographies might be for Mary Tamm. Since we have rumors of 16 coming.

MB30 is said to be a big Biography for a much-missed Who star. So that’s 4 Biography’s he now has in the works.

@ Jake E I suspect 1 or 2 of them might be for animated releases

@ prowl 1701 id be surprised if Troughton and tamn weren’t part of the 4 biography’s, maybe michael craze for underwater menace seeing as it already has a making of. In a left field suggestion think 1 might end up being for Dursley McLinden from remembrance. Season 25 is already extremely well represented by extras and he was extremely well liked and missed by everyone that he worked with. His story is quite tragic (died under 30 to aids) and it’s a sin’s Ritchie was partly based upon him as a tribute by Russell.

    • Auton

      May 6th, 2023 - 7:58am

Ian Marter biography is a possibility as well. So I think the four are Mary Tamm (Season 16), Patrick Troughton (Season 6), Michael Craze (Season 4 or rumoured underwater menace animation release) and Ian Marter (Season 13). They may possibly do a William Hartnell one as well

    • Auton

      May 6th, 2023 - 8:06am

One of those making ofs could be King’s Demons (Season 20) and the other one could be Horror of Fang Rock (Season 15), Twin Dilemma (Season 21) or even a new one for resurrection of the Daleks (Season 21) a story that’s popular a bit like the new one they did with Earthshock

      May 6th, 2023 - 9:32am

Well I look forward to seeing a Mary Tamm bio. I will be interested to see about her early years brought up in my home city of Bradford. The Patrick Troughton bio will be interesting my favorite Doctor. Hope we hear news on the next release soon.

      May 6th, 2023 - 1:31pm

      @ Prowl 1701 and @ Auton

I’m not sure whether the Patrick Troughton biography would be on the S6 colection; I think it would most likely be on the S4 collection. It seems likely that athe WH and JP biogs would be on S1 and S7, respectively and would fit with the Matthew Sweet interviews of the Doctor actors being on their first season.

A possible major biography for S6 could be Nicholas Courtney. Yes, S6 is not his first appearance in Who, but neither was S14 for Liz Sladen or S24 JNT’s first year at producing or Who credit. Interviews or biogs of companion actors and behind-the-scenes personnel involved in more than one season do not appear to be attached to their first credited story.

That’s not to say that Patrick Troughton is not one of the biographies currently being prepared. It may be such a large undertaking that it requires more time to make, so is being prepared a few years in advance rather than twelve months or so. A similar situation could apply to WH and JP biogs.

    • Auton

      May 6th, 2023 - 6:48pm

They have already made a Jon Pertwee tribute and I think that will be Season 11 so that the already made Caroline John tribute can stand on its own in Season 7. The Nicholas Courtney tribute was on Season 26 and I doubt they will do a second as they have to focus funds on new things. I still think the new Troughton biography will be on the Season 6 to let the new Michael Craze tribute stand on its own on Season 4

    It’s Official!

Unfortunately it is Kaleidoscope who bought the newly found Season 18 and Season 19 studio footage as they are showing it Sat 29th July for their 60 years of Doctor Who event.

They are showing it at 2.15pm in the schedule so the BBC don’t own it. I’m not sure what the BBC and Kaleidoscopes relationship is but I wouldn’t expect the footage to show up in the Blu-ray collection sets ever then.

Never mind maybe I should have bid on it after all haha, so I could give it back to the BBC for the sets 🙂

Maybe I was a tad hasty.

It does say “This is a completely free event due to the requirements of the licence to use so much rare and unseen material, but advance booking is essential!”

And at the bottom it says “Thanks to the BBC for their kind support of this 60th anniversary event.”

Master replicas is a resurrected name bought by heath-side trading, the people who purchased all the Eaglemoss stock direct from the administrators and who have been in business for many years.

I’ve seen some issues with delayed shipment etc but a lot of images of people getting stuff OK.

      May 5th, 2023 - 9:34pm

Is there any suggestion that these footage may appear on the season 20 box set. Maybe a reason why season 20 and 16 have possibly been switched in the release schedule, if that is what has happened.

    • Auton

      May 5th, 2023 - 9:53pm

These tapes being found is relatively old news now due to this all happening last year so I don’t it has moved the schedule

    • Rex F

      May 6th, 2023 - 12:19am

It wasn’t Kal who bought them, it was a group of fans under the banner of “The Starlord Consortium”. They gave a copy to Kal afterwards.

    • Gordon

      May 6th, 2023 - 1:18am

The auction was March 2021 and was announced as being in the archive in July 2021. I doubt the inclusion or non inclusion would facilitate a swapping of the schedule 2 years later.

Hi all! I love reading all the debates over what the next set could be, im on the camp that believe 16 will be next, im willing to be surprised but I think it’s likely to be this! Also sorry that this isn’t related to the classic seasons, delete if not appropriate, but I wonder if we do get collection style sets for the new series, will the full episodes of confidential be restored? Does anyone know why they were cut down for the subsequent releases, unless it was purely a space issue on the discs.

They were cut down due to copyright reasons. A lot of confidential features unclearable music. It’s unlikely to be included if released again

    • Star Lord

      May 4th, 2023 - 10:13am

Surely however they could be recut and rereleased with “clearable” music? The (slightly random) example that comes to mind is E4’s Skins which has completely different music in many scenes on the DVD releases for this same reason. Seems a shame to lose access to so much footage just because of the backing tracks. Obviously I also understand that this may be an arduous task to complete.

(also as said above, apologies if this is too irrelevant to the thread)

    DW4 – Will offer a better fit for Season 17 and 26

DW5 – Will be offering a better fit for Doctor Who steelbooks with the J cards

DW6 – Will be for standard Blu-ray editions.

So all the Limited Edition collection range will be covered by the end of June. Fantastic! 🙂

    • Gordon

      May 2nd, 2023 - 8:01am

If it wasn’t already out I would have went for 23. It could easily be 16 or 25. It’s not giving me a season 20 vibe or black and white era feels. I’m sure we will find out soon.

    • Jake E

      May 2nd, 2023 - 8:09am

I knew not to trust Peter Davison and Janet Fielding’s release date leak as they likely wouldn’t actually know and anything can change but it is weird that Season 20 is still taking so long to come out haha

I reckon the next set will be announced within the next couple of weeks and I’m happy with any season really as I’m getting them all anyway 🙂

    • D84

      May 2nd, 2023 - 8:53am

Yea I’m not getting a S20 vibe from those colours.

I would have thought more Blue for Peters sets – don’t know why just initial suspicions

We could all be wrong of course and it will be S20 afterall, we’ll find out – hopefully soon

If Peter’s slips do ring true, then a “Summer” release for S20 would need an announcement any day you’d think

I will be keeping my eyes peeled at 3pm on Thursday (my own suspicions – no insider knowledge)

    • Prof Horner

      May 2nd, 2023 - 8:54am

Season 6 would be perfect for me this summer in time for my big birthday. But I think it’s more to be either season 16 or 20 . If it is season 16 first it will mean two seventies season in a row.I think it’s more likely to be season 20 as we have been waiting for a Davison for a long time. Hopefully a announcement this month and maybe news on the animations.

    • Jake E

      May 2nd, 2023 - 8:55am

Thinking about it I know Peter and Janet said summer and the team behind the collections said they’re not follow anniversaries and stuff but I think it will be Season 16 in the summer and Season 20 for roughly November for the 60th Anniversary

Bobby, Where are you up to in your Anniversary rewatch? I started in March and i am now up to The Masque of Mandragora today and thats going at them at one story a day and taking into account all the new series, excluding spinoffs and nothing to disrupt, I,m hoping to complete before the 60th.

Sounds like season 9! How long ago was the question and answer?!
Fingers crossed for season 20. Can’t see it being 25 as 24 was pink.

    • DP Hill

      May 2nd, 2023 - 12:21pm

I think 2 would be excellent with these colours, but even though I’d love a Troughton as that would be an anniversary treat, it’s a hefty job! and probably a hefty set too!

16 could well be the next one, besides we have three Tom sets compared to two Davisons and this has been the longest since a Tom, i bet it’s like what others are thinking, season 16 summer, and then season 20 which will nicely line up with the anniversary – i know they don’t necessarily line things up but they could have thought oh well we have waited this long, putting it next to the 60th could be nice.

I’m kind of hoping that we have four announcements this year, s9 in Jan, s16/20 this month, s20/16 for august (it could be that the announcement is coming in the summer and Davison was thinking of that) and then one last annoucnement in november for an early 2024 release.

I was talking to Lee Binding the other day and he is working on the designs of 5 sets, one of which he hinted was black and white and years away in the schedule, I jokingly said season 3 and he kind of agreed before deleting my comment… I really would love a Who ray doc with him on it explaining how he does it all and going through his inspirations of the artworks for every set, maybe on the wilderness years… one can only hope!

I’m not sure Peter Davison and friends would know the release schedule they have probably been told it’s due for release this summer and just repeating it, due being the operative word

    Hello again all,

Does anyone know what happened to the rest of the Season 18 studio footage that was sold via a bidding site like a year or so ago?

Is it back at the BBC? Will this ever be released to us? Stick it on one of the season boxsets or a Wilderness Years set if that ever happens?

How much footage was there? Are we talking minutes or hours?

I was going to bid on it but realised I would never be able to play it and would end up sending it back to the BBC anyway 🙂

I can’t guarantee what it went for in the end but I remember it being 300 odd quid so it must not have been too sought after.

Thanks for any insights anyone has

I’ve found out that it’s Keeper of Traken from Season 18 and Four to Doomsday from Season 19.

    Hi,

I was watching Abominable Snowmen animation for the first time including watching the newly remastered original episode 2.

Phenomenal story another Season 5 masterpiece. But what I was gonna say was the on location footage in the episode is some of the best proper HD I’ve ever seen. Other than it being in black and white (I love black+white) it genuinely looks like it was filmed today. Unbelievable! Like I love all the HD footage in Season 19 etc but this is even more clear it’s incredible!!!

When people were saying some of Season 6 is on film is this what you meant the footage would look like?

What other episodes that aren’t currently out in the collection range will have proper HD scenes like that?

    Thanks, fantastic experience

The only one I know of is Spearhead from Space, which was famously all on 16mm film. After a brief look on the internet, I found there were a few film shots from the War Machines that survive and were loaned to the BBC for the VHS and DVD restorations. I’d love to hear if anyone knows any specifics, the restorations are the main reason I buy these sets.
Slightly off-topic, but film restoration is surprisingly such a fascinating topic. Seeing the amount of effort that is put in, and how good the output can be gives me so much respect for film restorers.

Jake E, It was available to the DVD team back in the day but it changed hands and last year I think it was, Paul Vanezis was asking if anyone had the film footage to send it to him and the team. This was the same situation as the curse of Peladon and that was found so fingers crossed for invasion of the dinos as well. Auton I’m not holding my breath but if it is HD on the set then that’ll be a nice surprise 🙂 Do you know roughly how much of it would have HD stuff? A couple scenes in one episode or multiple episodes?

The five doctors location footage will be great on the Blu-ray for season 20 this year. I thought the film elements on the sunmakers and planet of evil looked incredible aswell but I don’t know if it is the existing film.

    • Rex F

      April 24th, 2023 - 10:19pm

Sunmakers and Planet of Evil are the old tape transfers, but if the old transfers were done well then they clean up and upscale better.

Ben: Have you read the dvd articles on the old Restoration Team website? Most of it applies to the blus as well. But with more noise reduction.

Interesting thing about the War Machines 35mm inserts is that the original owner said that there had been two reels originally. I wonder what happened to the other?

    • Rex F

      April 24th, 2023 - 10:45pm

      Other surviving film:
Two Dalek Master Plan 35mm inserts at BBC
35mm Power of the Daleks 5 insert BBC
Space Pirates 2 modelwork on 35mm BBC
Invasion of the Dinos 5 bits on 16mm (still with Uncle Ian?)
Terror of the Zygons 16 mm eps 3, 4, bits of 2
Pyramids of Mars unused model shots
Invasion of Time faded 16mm at BBC
Awakening and Planet of Fire 16mm at BBC
Caves of Androzani 16mm (was with Uncle Ian)

    • Gordon

      April 25th, 2023 - 12:56am

Don’t expect too much of a step up in season 6 compared with abominable 2 as most of the episodes that are 16mm are telerecordings. The model work on space pirates should scrub up nicely though as that is actually 35mm.

I know they were trying to track down some A/B roll footage from invasion of the dinosaurs but I’m not sure if it turned up

      Rex F,

Is this Uncle Ian guy someone that happily hands over anything he has?

How faded is Invasion of Time? Is this likely to be used? Shadas Film HD stuff some of that looked kind of faded to me but still gorgeous

How much of Awakening, Planet of Fire and Caves will be in HD? Are we talking all location shots? Will this look similar to how Season 19 looks?

      Thanks for the replies guys

    • Rex Farrel

      April 25th, 2023 - 3:39pm

Jake: Uncle Ian is Ian Levine, so usually yes.

Invasion of Time is fixable, and was used on the dvd.

And it’s pretty much all the location stuff for the last three, yes, but Caves is a print rather than negative. (I suspect the old Restoration Team dvd articles will give more details.)

Ah only a print for Caves. That’s a bit of a shame but at the same time to my limited understanding it can still look really good and be HD. I could be wrong

      I found this:

There’s one frame in HD from a film insert of Planet of Giants.

There are about 40 seconds of footage from The Dalek Invasion of Earth, Episodes 1 and 3.

The a still from episode 1 of The Rescue.

About one second from The Web Planet episode 6.

A still of the TARDIS crew from The Space Museum episode 1.

The stock film of New York from The Chase episode 3.

Again, stock footage of Vikings from The Time Meddler episode 2.

A handful of sequences from the Ealing filming for The Daleks’ Master Plan: Episodes 1 and 2.

A still of the Seine in Paris from The Massacre.

19 shots from The War Machines episodes 3 and 4 exist on 35mm.

A handful of snippets The Power of the Daleks across episode 4, 5 and 6.

A lovely haul of footage from The Abominable Snowmen episode 2 thanks to the BBC Film and Videotape Library.

A still from The Dominators, episode 1 and The Seeds of Death episode 6.

About 90 seconds from The Space Pirates, episodes 1 and 2.

There’s also a handful of unused film trims across various episodes.

      – Just copy and pasted from an old thread. Does this hold water? Obviously some of this is from sets that are now out

    • Rex Farrel

      April 25th, 2023 - 6:40pm

Caves should still look decent in HD. If you’ve seen Curse of Peladon then those film inserts were retransferred from prints.

On season 20: they usually release the Australian sets before the next UK set has been announced. If they release an Australian season 9 set, then season 20 won’t be announced for a while.

But speaking of the Australian sets, would there be any reason they wouldn’t release season 9? Usually, there’s been a preorder by now (JB NZ), but there’s no sign of even on the Australian site.

I am in New Zealand too and I have ordered a copy of the UK season 9 set after I became suspicious that it is not going to be released here.
I am now seriously considering selling all my limited edition sets and starting again by importing the standard editions so I can have a complete and consistent looking set which is not going to be possible with the Australian sets.
Even if season 9 is released here there is still the issue of the inconsistent packaging, which is a shame as I actually prefer the currant version of the Aussie packaging to both the UK limited and standard sets. They are a nice hybrid of the two, looking a bit more premium but not as fragile and likely to fall apart. However it seems highly unlikely that seasons 12 and 19 will ever be re-released in packaging to match the other sets so I think I will probably just give up now and switch to the standard editions.
I have also already imported the UK season 2 set so I can swap out the edited version of The Chase that’s on the Aussie set but I guess I should probably have just waited for the standard edition of that too.
I wish I had just gone with the standard editions from the beginning now. Oh well, you live and you learn.

Thanks for your reply Bushboy. I started collecting late (mid-2021 with season 8). Although I was hesitant to get it because I wasn’t a massive classic who fan, almost as soon as I took off the shrinkwrap I knew I’d have to get the rest of the releases. Hearing about seasons 19 and 12 being in the UK style didn’t bother me all that much, because like you I prefer the slipcase to the J-card. I’ve got season 12 in a limited edition, and displaying it backwards with the grey side out makes it feel more uniform.
My mistake was paying more for OOP editions: I thought it would average out to be cheaper rather than importing standard or UK editions, especially with local sales, and I spent hours looking through trademe saved searches just to find them. I don’t think I could bear to sell them after spending so long looking for them…

(related: if you’re going to sell your sets, I never got seasons 18 and 19, so if you’re willing to ship to Palmy I’d be happy to buy them from you.)

Probably won’t be out till at least July at the ea. The bfi has listings up till the end of June and there isn’t any room for any doctor who screenings on a Saturday or Sunday. Speaking of the bfi they are planning on showing spearhead as part of bfi’s film on film season on 11th June. More oddly it’s a black and white print that is being shown as they are saying it’s how most people would have seen it back then.

Season 20 is strongly hinted to be the next Collection set this Summer – allowing for a 2+ month gap after announcement, I think we should be expecting a trailer very soon.

Given the empty other half of the Y
year – The 60th, of all years – I can’t really imagine there *not* being a third box set before the Christmas break.

Regarding steelbooks – I prefer the idea of the 2005+ series included into The Collection range. Just keep things neat and in sequence.

    • D84

      April 22nd, 2023 - 6:52pm

I agree on both counts Samuel. IF S20 does land August or earlier – seems like there is enough of the year left for a 3rd set to come out.

For the 2005+ series receiving “The Collection” treatment – that is exactly why I would like them to do it – uniformity on the shelf

      Here’s hoping ……

    • Samuel

      April 23rd, 2023 - 9:55pm

@D84 If say, animation or spinoff Blu Ray releases keep going, that’s absolutely fine – but when it comes to the main series boxsets – right now I can’t think of any reason to avoid the existing Collection layout.

If the diamond logo branding is made to replace the Whittaker logo in the range, then a simple fix would be to offer .pdf downloads for all the previous season J cards with the new Diamond logo – The official Star Wars website offered free Blu Ray sleeve downloads for the episodes 7-9 sequel range, with full instructions on how to print, what materials, etc.

Very simple offering to help keep the entire range visually consistent on the shelf, yet a generous attention to detail gift to the fans that have many of these sets from the last 4-5 years.

Two weeks left of April, I reckon we’ll get the Season 20 announcement mid-May in time for a July release. That leaves 5 months for one more set which I think will be announced mid-September for a November release. Could be either 6/15/16 or 25. So excited for literally any of those sets this year. I think the artwork for all of those seasons will be absolutely fantastic. I’m excited to see what special features and updated effects will be focused on on each collection boxset. Anyone thought of what the Doctor could be holding or doing on the cover, what the booklet holder picture will be, and what the booklet cover will be on each set? I wonder how each TARDIS console pic inside the booklet holder will be as well?

      Season 6
Troughton holding the message cube, booklet or holder having either the invasion where cybermen are outside st pauls in background with the doctor jamie and zoe in foreground, and the other being the whimsocal mind robber sets and monsters

      Season 15
Baker holding K9s whistle, the booklet holder horror of fang rock lighthouse if not on the box set cover, if it is then perhaps the doctors brain (could also be the theme for the discs) the booklet itself could depict gallifrey??

      Season 16
Baker holding the key to time locator, the holder featuring a stone circle or something from armageddom, love the cover to focus on the pirate planet, probably see all the keys floating around with the enemy or a person from each story though i feel

      Season 25
McCoy holding the doctors calling card from remembrance or the ragnarok amulet from greatest show, i feel like the psychic circus would be good on the holder with remembrance being the main theme for the cover

So IF previous releases are anything to go by, we have seen a collection set in June and July in previous years.

So again IF the release and production schedule is now stabilizing post COVID / post current global troubles – a theoretical July release would likely come with a pre order and trailer at least 2 months prior??

I don’t think there is any real pattern other than they try to release three each year and simply put them out when they are good to go.

Summer could be anything between June – August and the operative word is ‘due’

I believe Nine was delayed from last year for whatever reason which is why the announcement and release all happened quite fast.

I also think there is still a slight possibility there could be a fourth this year series partly due to that theory, Twenty Five being a candidate due to the low episode count

Basically Twenty will be out in a few months time according to strong rumours wait and see, can’t rush these sets a lot of love goes into then and Nine has not long come out

      April 17th, 2023 - 5:49pm

Bobby, I have a feeling that the Ukraine/Russia Conflict might have had something to do with that, as it affected Season 22’s Release last year (Trailer was out Late January, but we didn’t get the set till June – 6-months between announcement and release) which also caused a Gap for Season 02 (Trailer in August, Released in December (6-months again)

    • Martin

sorry, 5 Months, Not 6 for Season 2

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 17th, 2023 - 9:33pm

No doubt the war, covid all sorts have contributed to delays and release orders and probably still are which is why trying to predict a release schedule is futile. I simply think the manner and speed in which Nine was released suggests to me most of the work for it was done in 2022 and was probably loaded and good to go but delayed for some reason like Gordon said previously it was the fastest time frame from trailer to release date to actual release so far and the release itself was not delayed like many previous ones.

But if Bignell says three this year, three it is as I have said many times they are beautiful sets and so much love and hard work goes into them, it was only a few years ago we were told Spearhead would be the only blu ray release from classic Who now we have stacks of them and full series in one go. Even with three a year we are being spoiled

    • D84

      April 17th, 2023 - 11:37pm

Agreed Bobby – as Whovains we are indeed spoilt.

As I read through the booklets each time, and tell my wife various bits and bobs from each one (colour restoration as a recent example) she usually says “wow – how many other low budget TV sci-fi shows get THIS much attention and restoration”

I think the answer is probably none

  • Gordon

    April 15th, 2023 - 9:43am

Finally got through the season 9 and it’s extras. Got to admit I’m really happy with the restoration of the ntsc eps. They really are step ups. The omnibus editions work well though I did prefer day to sea devil’s. The location location location location feature was pretty good. Covers day, sea and mutants. Thought the bike section was maybe a little bit overindulgence seeing as it wasn’t a location but I’ll let them off as it was fun seeing Katy on the bike. The Michael e Bryant feature was fascinating as it covers quite a bit of his career that I didn’t know about. Would warn people if you plan to watch Blake 7 I’d avoid this as it does contain spoilers for the last ep. Stuart fell is another guy that had been in so many things I had no idea of. Aliens for example. Not at all surprised he preferred working on ark in space over aliens seeing as James Cameron was notoriously a nightmare to work for during that shoot. I mean the crew made t shirts with the slogan ‘you can’t scare me, I work for James Cameron’ for crying out loud. Time monster making of was fascinating. Covers the story quite well and even covers editing which is something the range hasn’t heavily focused on. The behind the sofa for this season was a mixed bag. The Katy and Michael and Sophie and Wendy sofas worked really well but the Peter Sarah and Janet paring was way too negative for my liking. I get why they are paired but I can’t help but feel they are getting a bit stale having Janet and Sarah together. maybe splitting them up and having Janet with Katy or Sarah with Colin would freshen things up for future sets. Obviously keep them together for 20 and 21.

I stopped watching most of the Behind the Sofas a while back. Why am I buying these episodes if they’re so terrible? (Admittedly I’ve since stopped buying them, too). There’s a balance to be struck between pointing out the issues, which many of us can already see for ourselves anyway, and just slating something, even if amusingly (which these often aren’t). I think the idea was good, but maybe a new producer is needed.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 17th, 2023 - 9:21pm

Behind the Sofas are mostly charming and it’s a good idea having the different eras watch each other’s stuff but Davison and Fielding are getting on people’s nerves now and are far too critical

The Davison years weren’t the greatest to be fair, I like series 19 a lot but 20 and 21 are mostly terrible apart from a couple of classics in the muddle but most of the 60s and 70s Doctor Whos were much better than their shows far superior production teams and writers so they have no right to knock them so much.

They just criticise everything and I must draw the line with The Sea Devils! It’s a fan favourite what is the point of 40 minutes listening to them moaning about it?

They need to mix it up, maybe get some more modern Who teams watching them?

Christopher Eccleston, Paul McGann, Jodie Whittaker?

How likely can we assume will it be that the entirety of ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ in full 1080i Blu Ray, will be included, either in the upcoming Season 20 (20th Anniversary Season, on this 60th Year) Collection boxset, or the very next William Hartnell Collection boxset (including all original extra features, as last published on the limited 50th steelbook, in 1080i) – or alternatively as a solo, 1080i Blu Ray release?

So therefore there’s nothing at all directly stopping The Collection sets from including the entirety of ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ in native 1080i, including all original behind the scenes, deleted scenes, etc.

That also makes sense, given The Tv Movie’s Blu Ray release included Night of The Doctor (think that’s what the 2013 McGann special was called, never understood the fetish for ‘of The Doctor’ titles for everything that year as it quickly became silly confusing).

Inevitably we need this David Bradley special re-released in native format on Blu Ray, given the limited 50th steel book is now at least £100+ new. If included in a Collection boxset, you’re talking at least half price of the steelbook, plus an entire Season of Classic Who, plus all the typical Collection extras. Potentially the biggest bargain of the range if this were to happen.

      April 14th, 2023 - 1:10pm

I think it would make the most sense on the Season 4 boxset, however that is already likely to be a very big boxset anyway. I can see them including The Fiveish Doctors Reboot with Season 20 though.

    • D84

      April 14th, 2023 - 3:09pm

I would say “An Adventure in Space and Time” could go in a few places on “The Collection” set. Season 1 seems an obvious choice to me (others may disagree)

You could also see merit in including it in a “Wilderness Years” set if that happens – same home as other “looking back” type stuff such as More Than 30yrs in the Tardis

I can also see how this could be “held” and placed on a “The Collection” set for “Series 7” as that was when it was made – that of course would be dependant on the team making them to either widen their scope to include NuWho – or move onto NuWho once “classic” is hopefully completed

To those involved in making them, come on guys – we want it, and will buy them – keep going ……………………………

      April 14th, 2023 - 6:22pm

@Bob Completely agree, very plausible idea.

This is the 60th Year of Doctor Who – We (most likely) have Season 20 Collection coming out this Summer – Why on Earth would you refuse to consider the David Bradley special be included?

This specific special was released almost exactly 10 years ago, to celebrate both the creation of the show, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary. It’s a total no brainer. Just include the main feature, all the extras, just duplicate the 50th steelbook disc and pop it in the Season 20 Collection. It isn’t rocket science BBC, seriously!

    • Auton

      April 14th, 2023 - 6:32pm

It doesn’t fit season 20 at all, as said before either Series 7 for the 50th or Season 1. Hopefully Season 1

    • daz

      April 14th, 2023 - 7:44pm

They won’t put it in with Season 20 as it has nothing to do with it. More likely Season 1 when it comes along.

There’s a good chance it will be repeated on TV as part of the 60th celebrations though.

Also the five-ish Doctors is unlikely on Season 20 as it is too linked to the 50th Special.

I already own the Blu-ray though so am not fussed either way and would rather the space was used for other things but understand if you’ve not got them in HD yet.

    • Prowl1701

      April 14th, 2023 - 9:01pm

I also think it would fit better on the season 1 boxset.

    • Samuel

      April 15th, 2023 - 12:18am

I guess, but it would just be the most weird thing of all not to finally release ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ on any aquirable form of Blu Ray whatsoever on the 60th Anniversary, again, 10 years since transmission.

Even if it were a solo Blu Ray by itself – new cover artwork, same disc from the limited, out-of-print over-priced £100+ steelbook from Amazon.

The only way anyone can find it is going online to find a 2013 dvd copy. America’s had a solo Blu Ray version for a decade.

Maybe it’s just me, there’s just something about it’s absence that feels very off. Touch wood, I hope I’m proven wrong this Year.

    • Rex Farrel

      April 15th, 2023 - 1:17am

The 50th anniversary blu ray box sets have dropped in price quite significantly – used sets under £40 aren’t unusual now, and you could resell the other discs if you only wanted AISAT (to people keen to own 50hz Day of the Doctor or the exclusive bonuses). I’ve even seen new and sealed Aussie copies for a similar price, because they reissued it down under in simpler packaging. There are also cheap European AISAT blus if you insist on 50hz and don’t want a box set.
I suspect the BBC don’t want to do small print runs these days, when you add in additional costs like marketing and distribution, so making a separate release becomes financially unviable when you could put the effort into something better at generating returns. The best chance could be of some smaller company trying to licence it, like Dazzler (more likely now with the Dazzler/Spirit/BBC links).

    • Prowl 1701

      April 15th, 2023 - 3:18am

I’d be fine with a solo Blueray release, not sure what the demand is for it though. I have it on the 50th anniversary Steelbook (which came out not overly long ago, like 2021). I had not realized how expensive that Steelbook had gotten.

    • Gordon

      April 15th, 2023 - 10:23am

Most likely season 1. All depends on how busy it is. I suspect a good chunk of the disc space of season 1 will be taken up with an unearthly child and the daleks. Can’t see any reason to include it on season 20. It does not fit. They have had nearly a decade to release an adventure on blu ray. I really don’t see why they would all of a sudden release it on blu ray now. Think at most we will get for the 60th on disc is 3 collection sets, 60th anniversary specials, maybe an animation or 2 if they are ready, maybe a colourised special edition of an unearthly child (if rumours are true) and my own personal wish of a brand new 4k scan of spearhead on 4k disc

      April 15th, 2023 - 1:05pm

Very interesting comments everyone, genuinely really fascinating to read.

@Rex – Fair shout-out regarding the 2013 Collector BRs. Thankfully in the last month, auctions have finally climbed down to £40-£50 as you’ve described. Literally for years these sets were skyrocket high, even while the Steelbook was in retail.

Regarding Australia slim-line copies – I’ll take a look at this later, but what online store would you recommend? I was familiar with JB Hifi, though unfortunately had an email from them pre-lockdown confirming they were shutting down UK shipping services, of which is a monumental shame – again, a win for reseller sharks on Ebay for some of the rarer BRs listed as ‘Australian Imports’.

For the BBC, I mean is a bit of a yeah and no answer in my view – logically you would assume there is no financial viability with solo releases – while Blu Rays of remade Dad’s Army episodes, and even DVD releases of ‘We’re Doomed’ (very similar premise to An Adventure in Space and Time) have all made it to retail, and as far as I know, readily available for customers to order whenever.

However I agree, if another company, or sub company can help give the situation some much required wellie for titles such as ‘Space and Time’, then I’m all for it. Including the well mentioned title by @Gordon, ‘Spearhead from Space’ in 4k.

My personal argument is that yeah, we could one day pop these on Collection sets – but we could be talking years potentially – which would be fine, except if whatever happens in the future with distribution/ projects one day decides “meh” – that’s my biggest worry.

We’re in the 60th year – what better time to do any of these solo releases than never really.

    • Gordon

      April 15th, 2023 - 11:09pm

In many instances it all depends on who produces it. Even if a show is broadcast by bbc2 as was we’re doomed it doesn’t mean the bbc produced it. It was dsp who is owned by Endemol. That would explain why it was released on a dvd by spirit entertainment. The remade dads army’s episodes was produced by uktv. It is owned by bbc studios which is run independently from the bbc as a commercial station which explains why they got released on dvd/blu ray by network distributing. An adventure in time and space was completely produced by bbc. Bbc studios handles any physical or digital release.

    • Rex Farrel

      April 17th, 2023 - 1:31pm

Samuel: I was also hit by JB Hifi’s move – a silly one to my mind, as there are many ways around it (even just a minimum order of £135 equivalent). Some Aussie stores sell via eBay, like The Nile, so it’s a case of hoping they put up the product you’re after at some point. It looks like the plastic case reissue might be OOP now though too.

The big problem with a single disc Adventure reissue, to my mind, is that with the 50th set and steelbook you’ve already got over 10,000 sales on blu ray and, taking into account the dvds and streaming, how many more people would want it? I think the BBC themselves would be needing at least 10,000 more to make it worth their while, looking at other products. Going back to steelbooks though, with the collectible side of things, I could see that working for a single release. I suppose we have to wait a few months and see what gets announced.

Got to be honest, watching it again, The Time Monster isn’t that bad really. Certainly better than The Mutants!

As many have said just weak after the three bangers at the start of the series and a very poor season closer after The Daemons the year before

On the wonderful documentary now, I nearly cried listening to John Levene talking about Barry Letts and breaking up.

You can never have enough John Levene and Toby Hadoke, it’s like a sequel to Living with Levene my favourite ever Who documentary

      I’m completely done now.

The Panoptican archive was a little disappointing truth be told, I was looking forward to that too. Ingrid Pitt looked like she didn’t want to be there, Briggsy really struggling to get her to talk at times. You can never get enough Terrance Dicks though, even though the subjects were limited the man is always a joy to listen to, rest his soul. When 20 comes out anyone who has not listened to the Davison Dicks Commentary on Five Doctors highly recommended

The sketch moved me a little, Pertwee talked about his tour and mentioned Bristol. I remember catching a train into town with my dad to go to a Doctor Who exhibition to meet him, I hard a home made card for him to sign but he pulled out due to ill health, I think he may have died shortly after.

Overall a great set. Pertwee is an odd one, he’s not my favourite Doctor, I don’t dislike him I just have quite a few others ahead of him. And every time a Pertwee set is announced next I’m a little disappointed but ironically they are the sets I enjoy most when I watch them. Of all the Doctors I find his stories somehow suit the series format and are best watched as a whole series rather than individual stories. There’s always a story or two I enjoy more than I did on the Pertwee blu rays, I’m still doing the 60th complete run so I’ll be dusting off series 10 shortly. Try and get up to 19 before 20 is released then hopefully 25 follows it after to help my run…

Well I haven’t gotten around to watching The Time Monster yet (busy with work and the cricket season has started) I like to watch them in one go. Probably watch it tomorrow night. Although Troughton is my first and earliest memory of the series and still my favorite. Pertwee stories are ones scared me. As you know by now I like the first five and except Baker C and Mccoy (sorry Bobby!) Yes I always enjoy watching Toby and his Docs. Happy Easter and keep enjoying the Who you like.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 9th, 2023 - 12:42pm

Prof Troughton is my favourite too and I am no fan of Colin Baker, not his fault, wrong place and wrong time and even still the weakest of the classic Doctors but I prefer him to Matt Smith I must say

We just disagree on McCoy, perhaps you need to give Delta and the Bannermen another chance?

    • Prof Horner

      April 9th, 2023 - 2:36pm

As you say Bobby we will agree to disagree on Mccoy. I agree with you on Colin Baker he and the series deserved a fair chance in 1985 with a new production team. I quite liked Matt Smith, it was just I found some of the things Steven Moffat did with the series highly dubious. Keep enjoying the Who you like and let’s keep having fun with some of these posts.

    • Samuel

      April 9th, 2023 - 3:06pm

I have to say, as a fan this might be the first time I’ve read reviews within an open message board, regarding the Steven Moffat era and Matt Smith’s Doctor that actually reflect my feelings on both.

Matt Smith, to me comes across as both a naturally talented Actor, and naturally warm and friendly person in public. All of that said, I absolutely cannot stand his version of The Doctor – specifically because of Steven Moffat’s writing – the irony being that Moffat previously wrote ‘The Empty Child’ of which I regard as his best work.

Matt Smith, in all of his other film and tv characters, for me, has this charming, brooding core about him, and the darker, argumentative scenes he plays are utterly outstanding to watch. Wheras any comedy Smith does act out feels proportionate, under control, direct/focused. Smith has serious, serious range as an actor.

Unfortunately, pretty much none of that translates across for me in his run in Doctor Who, with the one single exception being two moments in ‘Vincent and The Doctor’ when discussing mental health / life. Smith is finally allowed to briefly bring his very best qualities into the character for a split second.

I feel unfortunately the Moffat era just didn’t carry on that magic from The Empty Child for me. I do rate ‘Vincent and The Doctor ‘ and ‘Flatline’ as two very innovative stories (as far as I know, both not written by Moffat) the rest of the era just comes across to me as too much slapstick comedy for my personal liking.

You couldn’t have casted better actors throughout, it’s more the scripts that I have issue with. Give me ‘The Waters of Mars’ any day!

So what you are saying is that Happiness will Prevail?

    • Prowl 1701

      April 9th, 2023 - 5:48pm

I have found I really enjoy season 22, Colin is on the lower end of my doctor’s list, but the stories for 22 I really enjoy, even timelash is fun with updated effects and Paul Darrow chewing the scenery.

The McCoy era is the most underrated for me, aside from Delta (yes Delta, Bobby) and Greatest Show, I really like all of his other stories. Ghostlight is always an interesting rewatch.

I like the eleventh doctor, my favorite of the modern doctors by far, there is a lot of troughton in his doctor, but some of hartnell as well at times. He is best in series 5 when all of his elements are balanced well, in later series he is a bit cartoonish.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 9th, 2023 - 6:57pm

Totally agree Samuel, Smith is a good actor and his first series did excite me, I actually thought at one point he might be the best Doctor but he derailed massively, unbearably childish dialogue from Moffat but Smith really hammed it up he was so unrecognisable as the Doctor’s essential character. At least when Capaldi took over his Doctor was decent even with the dodgy scripts I imagine he probably toned down a lot of the childish stuff. Moffat wrote some of all my all time favourites as a solo writer but as a showrunner he lost the plot and when the fans rightly criticised the things like Teletubbie Daleks he lashed out at them. Chibs gets a lot of unfair stick for the ship sinking but people forget it was already nosediving under Moffat. At least Chibs was inspired by the original series

Definitely 5 holding the seal of rassillon! Emerald would be nice, i dare say id like a black or really dark grey set tho maybe this one
On the front, Omega, Black Guardian, Mawdryn, the tower, cybermen, master, white guardian ( i know but having them facing off in rhe villain gallery would look fun) the ergon as well

    • adam :)

      April 5th, 2023 - 6:00pm

i have a feeling we might get five holding the teleporter from the death zone on the cover and maybe a red tint to match the scene?? that would be cool!!

    • Samuel

      April 5th, 2023 - 6:17pm

Peter Davison holding the Seal of Rassillon with a glowing smile would be perfect imo.

As far as I know, we haven’t yet had a gold colour scheme, which I think would suit Davison, with a darker inner colour surrounding the main villains; Omega, Black Guardian, The Mara, The Garm; all quite Gothic villains. Particularly when looking at the spines of the Collection boxsets, it would be nice to see Season 20 be the gold one, maybe even Season 25 be a silver one?

Jon Pertwee’s Season 10 cover didn’t include Patrick Troughton or William Hartnell, neither did Colin Baker’s Season 22 cover include Troughton on the front – so I believe it’s very likely Peter Davison will be the solo Doctor on this cover.

If it were me, I wouldn’t include The Master or Borusa on the cover, given these were both surprise villain plot twist reveals during the 20th anniversary year. Instead I would like to swap that focus with emphasis on other characters such as Turlough and Kamelion – both brand new big deal additions during this Season.

I think overall a light vs dark theme would overall work, and be faithful to the whole Season, rather than just The Five Doctors.

    • Jake E

      April 5th, 2023 - 6:24pm

Samuel, I would say Season 10 had a Golden colour but I agree it could be used again a bit less subtle.

I definitely think Peter should be the only Doctor on the front cover.

DP I wouldn’t mind a heavily black front cover for one of the other seasons, that could be quite interesting and a big contrast to the current sets

I agree D84 I think the Five Doctors should hold the biggest influence here

    • D84

      April 5th, 2023 - 10:47pm

Sorry should have clarified – yes I agree Peter should be the only doctor on the front. I think we have had reference to this before when discussing S4 and S21 ( with the successor doctor featured inside potentially)

A general array of all villains should be present as usual I think. But yes, I can see a couple of extra nods to Five Doctors such as Peter holding the seal of rassilon as suggested – or the tower presented somewhere.

Even potentially the underused (imo) Raston Robot?

Daleks and Cybermen – probably not – they are well represented elsewhere and were minor in 5 Docs

    • Samuel

      April 5th, 2023 - 11:48pm

@JakeE Season 10’s cover looks to me to be more of an orange / firey core, surrounded by the glowing green of Pertwee’s jacket.

What I was suggesting was for Season 25, the 20th anniversary cover, to be a vibrant gold/yellow leaning scheme, with a dark core colour for the villains, given they do all seem to equally share a sortof gothic style.

Then later on with Season 25, it would be really great continuity to make it a silver colour scheme to represent the Silver Anniversary.

Plus, imagine how cool that would be if both of those boxsets had holographic covers for the Gold & Silver.

    • Prowl 1701

      April 6th, 2023 - 12:49am

The fifth doctor doesn’t ever hold the seal of Rassilon in the story does he? It’s taken from the master by the third Doctor before he runs into the fifth doctor. The doctor uses that teleporter return thingy (a technical term of course) to return to the council and escape the cybermen. I do think he should be holding that. I’d like either a green or gold color scheme as well, both would work for the season. As for enemies, Omega, the Mara, the master , chameleon , the black guardian, mawdryn, the dog from terminus, and the pirate captain from enlightenment would be good.

    • Samuel

      April 6th, 2023 - 4:06am

    • Auton

      April 7th, 2023 - 9:22pm

From what I remember, three takes it before the master meets 5, 5 takes the master’s teleport device instead

    • Samuel

      April 8th, 2023 - 12:29am

When The Master first transmats onto the Death Zone, the first Doctor he meets is Three. The Master gives Three the Seal of Rassilon by way of proving he’s working for the Time Lords. Three acuses The Master of forgery, and returns back the Seal, refusing to help The Master.

The next Doctor that meets The Master is Five. Again, The Master fails to prove himself with the Seal. The Cybermen attack them both, wherby one explosion renders The Master unconscious. Realising there’s no escape, Five searches The Master’s pockets for ideas – checks the Seal before throwing it away, then manages to find The Master’s recall device, using it to escape The Cybermen and teleport to Gallifrey.

The Five Doctors has many iconic moments – the imagery of Five searching The Master’s pockets for the Seal with the Cybermen marching towards them, I would say should be a seriously ideal inspiration towards The Collection artwork, especially since it’s the one moment Five holds the Seal of Rassilon.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 8th, 2023 - 7:26am

Three doesn’t give the seal back he pockets it and says ‘Stolen then i’ll return it at the first opportunity.’
Five asks for proof and the Master says ‘One of your other selves took it from me.’
I believe the item Five picks up is The Master after he falls is the tissue compressor as the Cybermen approach he tries to find a way to defend himself, it doesn’t work as it’s been damaged so looks at it says ‘Zapped’ he then finds the teleporter and uses it to escape.
The Master could not have had the seal when he meets Five the whole point of Three taking it is so he cannot prove his intentions to Five.
Prowl is correct Five never touches or sees it

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 8th, 2023 - 7:47am

      April 8th, 2023 - 1:15pm

Bobby I see your point – but that didn’t happen with Three Doctors so I very much doubt that 5 Docs will be an “extra”

It will very much be a main feature I would imagine

    • Samuel

      April 8th, 2023 - 4:20pm

@Bobby Woah. Not only do I rightly stand corrected – that was actually mind bending going back and rewatching the dvd. This to me is literally the 007 Moonraker self-mandela effect all over again.

I can vividly remember many of the iconic stories throughout Doctor Who, especially The Five Doctors – however it would appear the one blindspot in all of it, is Sarah keeping the Seal of Rassillon from The Master.

To throw another mental spanner in the works – I always remembered Peter Davison saying “sapped!” to describe what I thought was the Seal as being even more irrelevant / weak / useless than when The Master had (I thought) attempted twice to convince The Doctor with throughout two lifetimes.

So yeah… As a Doctor Who fan right now, this feels weird to realise. I hope at least one other fan is having a Mandela moment right now haha.

(I also had this same reaction to a Red Dwarf episode many years ago but I think this Five Doctors one is now on par)

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 8th, 2023 - 5:45pm

But D84 The Three Doctors is part of series 10 and The Five Doctors is not part of series 20, it was a 90 minute special which went out later in the year for Children in Need night. It will almost definitely be part of the box set but it will be listed as an extra because it isn’t part of the series

    • Bobby Fackrell

      April 8th, 2023 - 5:50pm

Samuel no worries to be fair the whole scene where the Master goes down and the Doctor picks up the recall is not actually very clear, I’m pretty certain it’s the tissue compressor he picks up as The Master threatens him with it when they meet but it’s a slightly long camera shot so no clear what he is picking up, a close up may have helped. I’m not a big fan of Peter Moffat I don’t think he was suited for Doctor Who, a lot of his episodes are very static, The Five Doctors is by far the best directing job he did for Who but he was no Peter Grimwade

    • Prowl1701

      April 8th, 2023 - 11:01pm

I thought I had it right. I remember the third doctor saying he figured the master stole it and would return it to the timelords (which he forgot to do we found out in Time of the Doctor). And when the master mentions to Five that he had the seal, he remarks that one of the doctor’s other incarnations had taken it, which Five didn’t believe. I think the doctor should be holding the teleport recall device and have that smile on his face that he has when he teleports away.

True Bobby, but it does carry a story / serial number (129) which is sequential and slots in between end of S20 (128) and start of S21 (130)

So I’m not quite sure we should call it an “extra” although I kind of see what you mean. It wasn’t part of the series as such – but as time has drawn on – it’s generally considered part of S20.

I imagine it will either be branded as “Complete Season 20” or Complete Season 20 plus the 20th Anniversary Special

Either way, aslong as we get it – and potentially at least 2 versions (original + extended, maybe with and without the DVD new SFX) – I’ll be happy

It is the recall device guys that 5 holds up, and uses.

3 gets the Seal of Rassilon presented to him by the master and accuses it of being a forgery or stolen, before passing it to Sarah. I don’t think we see it again after that though

Even though it’s not technically part of season 20, I always consider The Five Doctors to be part of season 20, it’s even listed on the Wikipedia page as part of it. I would be fine with five doctors being represented on the front cover.

Has anyone gone to the DWAS Capitol fan conventions before? Any advice?

This will be my 1st ever convention. I talked to Jenna Coleman via live video call once but that’s it haha. So getting to meet Colin, Katy, Louise, Nicola, Wendy, Frazer, Sarah, Matthew, John Leeson and Steven Moffat is super exciting and nerve wracking assuming I can get there and they actually turn up haha.

How nice are they all in person? What do you guys bring to get signed? How long do you get to talk to them etc?

I was going to bring the Blu-ray collection boxsets but figured they are too fragile and having to carry lots of them on a train for 3-4hrs is not a good idea 🙂

    Thanks for any advice etc

I have this rare 50th Anniversary stamp collection book thing that my Grandad got me in 2013. I know it’s rare, not many made. So maybe if I could find a page or 2 in there that’s not got much stuff on it then that would be good for autographs maybe? I would have to check

      April 3rd, 2023 - 4:50pm

I tend to bring either my Collection boxsets or the steelbooks, depending on who’s there. When I went to Aberdeen I managed to get 5,6,7, and 8 on the 50th Anniversary steelbook.

To avoid damage I do keep mine in the protective sleeves from Steelbook Central (there’s a link on the blu-ray section of this site), which are definitely worth investing in if you can.

Every Who actor I have met has been incredibly welcoming and happy to converse. It can vary on how much time they have. If there’s a huge queue behind you then they just keep things moving along. If there’s no queue then you can chat for ages.

Hope you have a great time.

Thanks Rory. Yes, I also have those protective sleeves but the sets move around in them a lot which worries me. Looks better on the shelf with them in the sleeves surprisingly.

Wow I’m jealous! Maybe I can meet the rest of the surviving and able Doctors some time 🙂

Wendy Padbury, sophie Aldred and Mark Strickson are three of the nicest people ive ever had the pleasure in meeting from Who. Like you say it depends, they probably respond better to some more than others and depending on queues or how they feel that day. Try to engage them with a quick who related question or people theyve worked with on certain stories etc and talk to them like someone you know. Just dont get over friendly. Then thank them politely and move on. It worked for me.

      Hi Jake
I go every year to Crawley and enjoy it. It’s simply the best event as it’s very intimate. One year I bought Debbie Watling a wine and she stayed for hours chatting with us. Not had that happen again with other guests, but you do get some time to chat with the stars during signing. I would check out the DWAS site information as most are signing one item for free. Steph is extra and so is Matthew Jacobs. I’m printing out photos this year as I like to keep my collections as they are. You can always purchase extra autographs from stars too. Personally I’m going for a few group photos this year, Wendy and Fraser, Louise and John, Nicola and Colin, Matthew and Sarah!

      Enjoy!

Robert I did send the DWAS team an email about which guests are on which days so I could get group photos and they said we won’t be told until the day but fingers crossed this works out.

Do you know how often the guests cancel and don’t turn up? Just curious, don’t want to get too excited and then for some of my favs not to be there

Do you know how the autographs and Photo Booth works? And how many people go/ how long the queues are please?

    Hello all,

I saw on Prowls YouTube video that apparently 5 or 6 episodes of Season 6 are still available on 35mm film. Is this true? I’ve never heard this before?

Does that mean they would be true HD like Spearhead from Space? I can’t imagine this is accurate or I would have found out by now

I would be really interested if anyone could help?

Does that mean the full episode is proper 1080p HD like Spearhead and some of Season 19?

If yes then please bring Season 6 Collection set out ASAP!!

    • Auton

      April 3rd, 2023 - 12:11pm

I’ve double checked and yes Episode 2 of the space pirates is 35mm. Plus there are model film sequences existing as well for that story. Spearhead exists as 16mm film so I personally don’t know the difference in picture quality on Blu-ray for 16mm compared with 35mm but I can guess 35mm will look great on Blu-ray

    • Rex Farrel

      April 3rd, 2023 - 12:38pm

They’re 35mm film recordings like Dalek Invasion of Earth #5, just from a 625 line monitor instead of DIOE’s 405 line.

    • The Meddling Monkey

      April 3rd, 2023 - 12:54pm

Didn’t they point a camera, with 16mm film in it, at a screen during the 60s to make copies for overseas sales? Hence the need to VidFire them back to video again. Is that what you mean?

35mm sounds a bit lavish for 60s BBC. Spearhead was made on 16mm, wasn’t it?

    • Jake E

      April 3rd, 2023 - 1:09pm

So they won’t be in HD? They are still just Standard definition video tape?

    • Gordon

      April 3rd, 2023 - 1:10pm

It would be more like dioe ep 5 than spearhead. Just like Rex Farrell says it’s from a 625 line monitor. Still will scrub up quite nicely though

    • Prowl 1701

      April 3rd, 2023 - 3:08pm

10 classic who episodes where transmitted from 35mm film in the 60s for various reasons, 7 still exist. Episode 5 of Dalek invasion of earth, episode 6 of wheel in space, an episode of the dominators (I forget which), episode 5 of the mind robber, episode 1 of the krotons, episode 5 of the seeds of death, and episode 2 of the space pirates. Curious to see what they will look like on Blueray. I haven’t watched the Blueray of DIOE yet, so I’m not sure how much better episode 5 looks than the other episodes of it. I think most of them were just outputted to 35mm from the camera where as space pirates was actually shot on it.

    • Jake E

      April 3rd, 2023 - 4:11pm

I hope you’re correct Prowl because if Space Pirates was actually shot on 35mm (which surprises me) and is still available then that should be the best looking episode of Classic Who

    • Rex Farrel

      April 3rd, 2023 - 8:55pm

Space Pirates 2 as a whole is just a film recording like the others, but the film inserts (the model work) still exist on proper 35mm to be scanned in true HD.

    • Prowl1701

      April 3rd, 2023 - 9:44pm

Actually I think space pirates was actually shot on 35mm unlike the others, that’s why it was preserved as it was found to be of historical significance. Though reading up on it, it’s hard to tell. It is preserved as a 35mm negative for sure. At least I think I have that right, I’m sure Gordon could tell us for sure, he’s a who wizard.

    • Prowl 1701

      April 3rd, 2023 - 9:57pm

I am curious how much better the 35mm ones will look compared to the 16mm telerecordings on Blueray. I need to watch my DIOE on the boxset and see if episode 5 looks better than the others.

    • Jake E

      April 3rd, 2023 - 10:13pm

35mm is definitely miles better than 16mm if filmed with it. Not sure quite how much difference it would really make to something originally filmed with Videotape. Possibly some improvements. I’m just happy to get the best versions available for these sets 🙂

    • Jake E

      April 3rd, 2023 - 10:35pm

Yeah thinking about it if I remember correctly it’s mostly set in an indoor set with a model shot. The indoor set stuff would have been filmed on videotape so it would be Standard Definition like 95% of Classic Doctor Who

    • Rex Farrel

35mm eps went to the film library, as they were technically film-originated and were UK tx masters (meaning a higher chance of survival, unlike the 16mm foreign sales copies at Enterprises which were always disposable when rights expired). The only Who properly shot on 35mm was the TV movie. There was never any need before that (nor budget).

    • Rex Farrel

      April 4th, 2023 - 12:30am

Find some frame grabs of Last Train Through Harecastle Tunnel on blu ray. The studio footage is a 35mm film recording from a 625 line set-up. (Who won’t be as sharp though, because even if they do a new scan they’ll filter it more heavily due to VidFIRE and personal preference).

    • Prowl 1701

      April 4th, 2023 - 12:54am

That’s just it, the 35mm ones weren’t done on video originally, and then telerecorded later like most were, they were recored straight to the 35mm film. But since the signal was from the studio 625 line cameras I’m not sure how good the bluerays will look. Though I’m sure they will look good.

At this point in the year, it’s pretty easy to disregard that there will be four collection releases this year (as some had hoped). It makes sense with how much pressure the team is on already, and to be honest I prefer fewer releases of higher quality. If we were to get any classic-related special releases for the anniversary, it’s most likely going to be the rumoured animations or colourisations.
Do you think that the BBC will release any special (physical media) releases for the modern series? As far as I’m aware, not much has been announced or rumoured, and I would expect the BBC to capitalise on the extra attention brought on by the anniversary year.
There have been wishful theories for a long time of a modern series collection line (probably done by a different team). If one were to release, do you think it would come out after all of the classic series have been released, or would it begin in an anniversary year?

I think if a Modern series/reboot series/NuWho series collection were to start it would probably start in 2025 or 2030. These are the 20th and 25th year anniversaries respectively of the show coming back. I’d LOVE to see a NuWho collection with the Limited Edition packaging, it would be super. It would also be really cool to have some classic and modern Doctors and companions on the Behind the Sofa extra and vice versa for the Classic seasons currently being released. I’d love to see Peter Capaldi’s, Steven Moffatt’s, and Mark Gattiss’s reaction to some Third and Fourth Doctor stories and I’d love to see Frasier Hines’s and the Fifth Doctor team’s, and Sophie Alfred’s reactions to some Tenth and Twelfth Doctor stories.

I would like it to happen, at some point.

How they are “labelled” for me – should be a continuation of the original season numbering so after a WY set, the first NuWho set could be Season 27 ….

Just me, the whole thing is all now “canon” so apart from production labels that’s how I view it

Even if it is branded “Series 1” and continues from there, I think packaging style should be consistent and I will of course buy them all.

      Most of us will right?

I personally think they’ll try to get three sets out this year, season 20, Tome set, maybe 25 or 6. McCoy and Aldred were filming last year so I reckon that’s due. Can’t see 4 sets.
My guess season 20 announcement due this month possibly last week of April for June/July release. Then announcement in august for set due October.

I certainly did. Missed seeing Peter/colin/Sylvester/Paul/Sophie in my home town but seeing and meeting one of my favourite bands more than made up for it. Watched day of the daleks last night. Picture quality isn’t that much of a jump but as I know the budget went elsewhere it isn’t too much of a shock. There isn’t a massive amount of new things but considering how comprehensive the original dvd was it’s not a surprise. Love the 60 minute omnibus version. I would use that version as a gateway for newbie pertwee viewers. Had fun with the behind the sofa but Janet Peter Sarah are a little in the negative side towards pertwee. The free thinking doc is good but considering it’s more focused on the dalek movies it probably would feel more at home on season 1 or 2. Just starting on curse of peladon. Very impressed on the upgraded picture quality

      What was the band Gordon?

Agreed on the fifth Doctor brigade on Behind the Sofa – does Janet really have to do them all? Peter Davison is amusing but always very critical. They all slagged off The Sea Devils perhaps they should sit down and watch it properly, it is regarded as a classic

More modern Who crew would be good fun for those

I’m on the Sea Devils and loving it

Marillion. They were playing 3 different set lists over 3 days with 3000 fans in a centre parks resort In holand. Fantastic time was had. Going again in 2025.

Currently on the curse bts. Can’t help but agree on giving Janet and Sarah a break. They seemed to spend half the run time taking the Micky out of alpha centuri and her silly voice. By all means keep them for 20 and 21 but give them a break for a couple of seasons. I get they live nearby and is probably convenient but surely there is other cast members available.

I am not familiar with that band, but glad you got to enjoy it and have some fun. I enjoy Tardis team five, they are overly critical, but usually in a way I find amusing, and I do admire their honestly. I would like to see some new faces on bts, some modern who cast/crew would be nice. Would love to have Steven moffat or one of the modern companions if they have time.

For a potential Wilderness Years set what version of Paul McGann would you want on the cover?

I would choose the movie with wig look but I would be happy with the Modern Who versions

What do you guys want if this set happens?

Movie on the cover and the modern version inside?

Yes, that’s a very good idea!
What about 96 McGann on the front with the titles around him, roberts master, shalka, the rani – even if it is not clearable, there’ll be a doc about it either way I’m sure, renegade daleks from fatal death, michael grade [i know he won’t really be there]. If there was a way to represent animation on there well i’d say krargs, skagra, as mentioned before the shalka, also nessicam and real time cybermen. I’d say it could be a break from the norm and have all of the surviving wilderness doctors older and in costume, alongside richard e grant humanly in shalka doctor form, as well as rowan atkinson as i find onsters for a wilderness era set may be too difficult to achieve

inside cover would be great to have 2013 mcGann on there, would love the ineterior of his tardis and seeing his face on the inside, maybe also a mock up of the dimensions in time rogues gallery on the booklet holder too

It will be from the time the movie was made. From what lee binding has said about other seasons he has to work with promotional material that exists at the time ie he has to use season 2 promotional material on season 2 etc
