I remember skiving school to see the unscheduled repeat of ‘The Sea Devils’ omnibus when sport was cancelled! The performance I gave pretending to be ill was Oscar worthy! Then missed half of it because had to keep dashing upstairs as my mother kept checking how I was…only to discover the next day that the whole class had watched it at school anyway!

I appreciate that they have to stick with the 2018 logo for the cover to match the previously released boxsets. Nevertheless, I wish that they started using the diamond logo for future collection releases, as I think that would look really good. 🙂

Logo wise, I think for me they could have used the logo from the opening titles of each season for the box art.

Then again that too would have tripped out my OCD just like on the DVD range when the 2Entertain logo appeared (having previously not been present on the very early ones) and then changed colour from Black to White (or the other way around)

Really not sure what the right answer would be here, I think the current approach to keep the Jodie era logo – to keep them consistent seems sensible.

Lets see what logo turns up on any future Animation Steelbook as that changed from Power to Macra – annoyingly

oh gawd, don’t start saying that you’ll set people off.

I am not fan of the Whittaker era, but the logo suits the boxsets, as much as I love the new diamond logo. Russell T Davies has said the Whittaker logo stays for the collection sets.

A beautiful set with tons to look forward too. The location and Time Monster ones look amazing plus the interviews with Stuart Fell and Michael Brient sound fascinating and it’s nice to have a change instead of just doing the usual in conversations (which are amazing as well). The audio archive will hopeful include that interview with Jon Pertwee on location of the Sea Devils and I am the doctor/ Pure Mystery

Looking forward to this, personally I wouldn’t mind if they changed the logo. I’ve always disliked the Jodie era logo. As long as they keep the boxes the same format, I don’t really think it matters. Nice to see they’ve been able to dump those darn Covid screens for “behind the sofa”

Interestingly Amazon are not allowing pre-orders on this for mainland Europe, only the UK (Thank God I have a UK based account).

If you try to order with a EU based account it basically says “out of stock”.

Amazon has lots of inconsistent rules on ordering discs internationally now. I suspect this title could be Global Store, so sold at a potentially higher price from their regional websites – but still shipped from the UK. (Of course, when the algorithm goes wrong it means UK buyers can get a lower price by placing their order via Amazon Germany or wherever, which does occasionally happen).

    • Henrik V

      January 26th, 2023 - 8:07pm

It throws up the same “Out of Stock” for me – a fellow EU fan. I was dreading that the new Disney+ deal might mean any future home releases of Doctor Who would be exclusive to the UK. Hopefully that’s not what’s going on here. I would be devastated to rely on just streaming. But Amazon is always sketchy with the listings for these sets so I guess we’ll know in a few weeks? Fingers crossed.

If anyone spots new information on the restoration work, could they post a link to it please? I’m interested in what they’re doing this time for the NTSC episodes, particularly as they’ve previously said that the Peladon film recordings aren’t terribly good (potentially preventing a Colony in Space treatment).

Inflation? Or just a lot of the budget going towards episode restoration, as 15 of the 26 episodes this season are not the original masters.

    • Andrew

      January 26th, 2023 - 6:36pm

Yeah the cost of living crisis in the uk has gotten pretty bleak that and the scrapping of the licence fee will definitely be felt with bbc output for the next few years

2 Time monster certainly needed touched up if they’ve put more of the budget towards that rather than effects I’d be fine with wish they’d done that with the dameons somehow the new restoration of that was worse than the dvd

    • Rex F

      January 26th, 2023 - 7:10pm

We know that Time Monster is getting the Colony in Space treatment, so should look similar to that if they don’t rush it. How was Daemons poorer than the dvd though? I’m guessing softer/smearier perhaps?

      January 26th, 2023 - 8:25pm

      Hi Andrew

I assumed that the extra Picture quality work, plus 2 Omnibus editions One of which ( day I think ) from scratch as only the notes and efit3d script remains ( there might be an audio ,but I imagine it’s a lot of work building it up)

2 sound upgrades. and Day already has a bells an whistles new CGI /Sound version . I doubt the others could have CGI even if there was time/money.

plus 3643 pages have to be scanned, tidied up,( actors fees removed) and PDFs made. All takes time, which is money. 8 discs for 5 stories is more than ever expected.

brilliant isn’t it. Mad to think the amount of love we get for our lovely little programme.

Just to clarify, the TV licence hadn’t been scrapped, only frozen. Hopefully the tie up with Disney will bring in money to restore more classic stuff.

    • Andrew

      January 27th, 2023 - 8:18pm

Don’t see why Disney would invest in classic who unless Disney plus is going to be its home going forward more so a ratings surge back to 7m plus and they’ll invest in the brand more

    • Gordon

      January 27th, 2023 - 10:57pm

Don’t understand why the licence fee is being brought up. It’s a commercial product produced by bbc studios (business arm of the bbc. The licence fee doesn’t cover it. Its budget is allocated based upon how many copies it will sell. Considering Disney is only involved with new stuff I don’t see them even looking at classic stuff let alone anything else

Lovely artwork, lots of great elements to it like the reflection of Aggedor in the mirror.

Wasn’t initially keen on the vast use of purple – but it’s grown on me.

Content looks great, seems like The Mutants will be Disc 6 with The Time Monster spread across Discs 7 and 8.

Very much looking forward to the Movie Editions and New sound mixes on The Sea Devils

Trailer is great imo, lots of great moments and seems like they are building on the idea of the Companion support group – interesting to see where that goes next.

Overall, I’m very happy and have a pre order in the bag.

Pertwee’s eyebrows look weird on the art, zoom in and it looks like he doesn’t have a left eyebrow and the right one is only partly there, like they were airbrushed out (imo). Love the purple, perfect choice of color for the season. Wish Delgado was on the art though.

I’m really looking forward to that feature about michael, he’s a great director.

This was the first season I have any memories from so really looking forward to it! I loved Aggedor, the Mutts and the Sea Devils.

The only very slight disappointment is that the original specially shot trailer of the ‘Daleks in London’ is now lost. I’ve always wondered what it was like.

    • David

      January 27th, 2023 - 10:42am

The Daleks in London was part of a Radio Times trailer advertising the Dalek competition they were running as well as the programme. I understand that it involved taking the Daleks to Westminster Bridge .

    • Doug Who

      January 27th, 2023 - 10:46am

It was a specially shot trailer for ‘Day of the Daleks’ which featured, as far as I know, the Dalek props around various location in London. I don’t know how long it was or exactly when it was shown but I’m sure others will have more information. It’s been mentioned in things like ‘Doctor Who Magazine’ archive features over the years. Sadly, like the earlier Radio Times Zarbi trailer, it is long gone.

Man that trailer hit me twice. Great tribute to Stewart Bevan.

Not too worried about the artwork at present. It’s how it looks in my hands is what matters. Looks fine to me though. Only thing missing is the master and I guess as he was front and centre in 8 it makes sense to keep him off it.

As for the extras. Another solid looking set. Pretty much guessed a while back they would do a location location location feature on 9 and here we are. The feature on the time monster dvd more focused on the science so a making of focusing on the story is more than welcome. Thought we would be getting a Matthew sweet interview with Michael Bryant but this feature on him looks a lovely compromise. Stuart fell probably has some interesting storys to tell. Movie length versions of day and sea devils was expected. After saying last month that a 5.1 mix on sea devils would be insane to do I’m surprised and delighted that one is included. Even more astounded we are getting Dolby atmos too. No alternative cgi but considering the other goodies we are getting I totally get the money went elsewhere. Best of all. It’s out in less than 2 months.

It is a first, but bearing in mind the source materials it’s probably not going to be too exciting whenever there is dialogue involved in a scene. Obviously they’ll have free reign when it’s just music and effects, with Workshop raw materials, but then they need to balance that with the other scenes which is going to be a hindrance.
