Release date now scheduled for 3rd March just before The Savages later a free weeks later.

So we might get a confirmed release date for The War Games In Colour I predict it might be February or perhaps April.

We seem.to be getting these new releases within 2 or 3 weeks apart.

Joy To The World 27th January
The Collection Season 9 Standard Edition Blu-ray 3rd February
The Collection Season 7 Limited Edition Blu-ray 3rd March
    The Savages 24th March
The War Games In Colour date still yet to be confirmed I still think sometime next month perhaps.

But there 5 New releases confirmed but strange that the dates they are close together ave never known this many releases coming within a few weeks of each other.

Not even when the DVD range started one every month or so.

If you are old enough to remember the VHS range was releasing 2 titles but they were every 2 months apart.

So that said what or If they have anything else planned in the next few months. Are we going to get more Animations, The Savages is still a surprise to me. Or is it that the new season will be starting then released a couple of months after that maybe a gap for a few months.

I remember the VHS range very well & bought them the first week of release to replace my old copy’s. Just as well as the hand of fear was only available for 2 weeks as a Woolworths exclusive before it was withdrawn.
Can’t remember why but I’m sure someone will.

It was because the bbc decided to hault the vhs range because of the imminent arrival of the tv movie. The only exception being was green death due to Jon’s passing. Many titles were deleted. The range restarted in 97 with the movie logo and design template

Ah thanks Gordon I remember now the release of the tv movie was a massive event, after waiting 7 years for some new who.
Then there was the age rating originally a 15 then changed to 12.
Some proof sleeves of the 15 version some how got out from the printers. Our local group got hold of a load & we all recieved freebies hehe.

Craig F, I got 3 of those 15 cert covers. One I used to replace the official one, one is pristine and kept safe and the other I got signed by the entire principal cast!

Gordon has just dug up some great memories. So many deleted VHS titles selling for silly money in the late 90s, early 2000s. I was at a car boot sale one morning and a seller put out a box containing TDIOE, Daleks Early Years, Tom Baker Years, Tomb, Invasion, Web Planet etc. I was like a rabid hyena tucking into an antelope carcass! £2 each! I ended up picking up the rare titles I already had in late years and trading them with the lads at the 10th Planet store for ones I didn’t have, like Enlightenment, Krotons, Dominators etc. Couldn’t ever get my hands on The War Games double set which was selling for like £50-60 at the time until the WHSmiths Time Lord set came out. Happy days!

      January 17th, 2025 - 3:55pm

Yeah Craig, that’s right what Gordon said, The Hand Of Fear was only out for 2 weeks, and i was just in my early teens when the VHS range started coming out. So I had save my 50p a week pocket money to get even one story which was one every 6 months, if I was lucky I would get family members buying them for Birthdays and Christmas. Up on till I turned 16 in 93, went on a YTS course got paid about £30 a week. So I was buying maybe one title every few months. But even than they were about 12 coming out a year and the prices were going up by 2 to 3 quid, so I was buying some of the new ones mostly the single titles and the odd double, but I never foreseen that they would put a body blow as some of these had been out for years and they were never ever in the sales either as I remember, but I was quite shocked when in 96, by than I was working as a door to door salesmen, relying on commission, that the BBC decided to delete most of the back catalogue so it left a big hole in my collection and it was most of the double releases that I didn’t have one of those was The War Games as well, I was hoping that they would be re-released at some point but they never did, I did manage to get my hands on some of them from second hand shops but it did take years to find them not like today go on to eBay or something. But than a was still looking for a few of the doubles that I didn’t have I remember I had to bid for Planet Of The Spiders it cost me a ridiculous price of around £50 because you couldn’t buy them anymore now you probably pick this up on eBay for about a fiver. Yeah they did things different back than. I still for some strange reason own brand new never been opened its the from the 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Daleks Tin box set. I bet that must be worth something these days over 30 yrs old. I don’t know why I still have that maybe I bought one myself and someone got me one for a present or something, as I do remember owning and watching these along with the TARDIS tin I used to have. Than the DVD range started which were a bit expensive to start off with at 20 quid each as it was just a new format. And some of them were most of the BBC deleted from the VHS range. So I decided to start collecting some of the stories I didn’t have on VHS in case they decided to delete those but they never did you can still get every single title for a real cheap price of about £6 each on DVD these days. Now you have these unique collections on Blu-ray coming out. I said why do I want to get these on another format when I have them all on DVD. I said no I have them all No more formats, but they had all these extras special features new special effects so yeah I now collect these Collections The only thing I don’t like on the Blu-ray sets is that they in small screen size picture, where as the DVD are all full screen not a silly box screened version why they decided to go for that I don’t know maybe somebody can, so if I want to watch a particular story I have to watch the DVD version as I just can’t watch these smaller screen versions I was keep thinking theirs something wrong with the tv. But that’s it after this format no more I have all stories to enjoy I will only collect these Blu-ray Collections for just the extras they have. So yeah a lot has changed since the VHS on those you only got the story no extras like today but Happy Memories to even just watch a story that was never been shown since they original transmission.

@Erato – That’s how I managed to get hold of The War Games by picking up the WHSmith exclusive Time Lord box set. Later on I also picked up the exclusive 40th Anniversary Daleks DVD box set (collecting together Dalek Invasion of Earth, Resurrection and Remebrance). I had all those stories on DVD anyway, but couldn’t resist as it was a nice box set.

@SVH, yeah I never fell into that trap and saved myself a lot of money. Remember when I was tempted to buy the Davros Collection on VHS just for the artwork and the Davros DVD set for the extra features. Thankfully, common sense prevailed.

I am curious as to why colour recovery failed for episodes 1 & 3 of The Silurians? We’re they unable to decode the chroma pattern, was this too dark or was it more like Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1 without the full colour chroma dots (I think Blue was absent) or like The Mind of Evil 1 with the chroma dots filtered out?

Thanks Gordon. I have to agree Peter Crockers screen grabs look a vast improvement on the previous releases and must have taken a fair amount of work to improve. Ambassadors looked quite washed out on the DVD release.

    • Gordon

      January 16th, 2025 - 10:54am

It really is superb stuff. Just got the invasion of the dinosaurs to tackle.

He was asked by dublinfox98: Would you say Ambassadors, Mind of Evil or some other Pertwee has been the greatest challenge when it comes to restoration?

Peter: Ambassadors, by a short head. Mind was groundbreaking for its time (with superb keyframe colouring by Stuart Humphryes) but would be much easier now with the benefit of 12 years of tech advancement.
CCC3 (ambassadors) was as hard as FFF1 (mind).

Dublinfox98: That’s amazing, Ambassadors always was the less cut or dry like the other Pertwee’s. I’ve read the VHS was a strange mix of colour and B&W. Still, at least there’s only Invasion of Dinos 1 left to tackle, will that be as hard as CCC3 and FFF1?

Peter: Easier. Fundamentally the same as Mind 1 but I have the methodology and workflow worked out already. It’ll be relatively straightforward.

Sounds like he’s got it in hand.

      January 16th, 2025 - 12:22pm

What dr who classic season do you think might be next out on blu ray after Season 7? Season 21 or a 60s season or Seasons 13/16?

    • Gordon

      January 16th, 2025 - 5:16pm

I got it pinned down to about 3 potential seasons.

Seasons we can rule out: We are just away to get 7 so won’t be 11. Season 3 and 4 have had recent animations plus I still think wheel will be animated so not 5 either. War games in colour is coming out soon and restoration work has said to have not have started so won’t be 6.

If we are getting a tom next it’s most likely 16. Neil Cole is currently restoring the original Skarasan prop for a secret project later this year. If it’s for s13 I doubt it will be ready in time for the next set but if it’s not a tom next it will be open the door to a possibility 13 for the set after.

That just leaves 1,16 and 21. Think it’s most likely 21 or 16 with a small possibility of 1 next.

    • Prowl 1701

      January 16th, 2025 - 8:47pm

Pretty much my thought exactly, Gordon, I figure 1, 16, or 21 will be the set after 7.

      January 16th, 2025 - 9:12pm

if it means anything season 13 is 50 this year (August 1975)

      21 is 41 years old

have they ever released an anniversary Set. ? I suppose its 55 yrs for season 7.

but I think there was filming of the stones used in SoB 2023/2024 so that might be a candidate.
it’s one of my favourite seasons . Even if Armageddon is too long and starts to unravel. make a great 90min omnibus .

    • Craig F

      January 16th, 2025 - 9:31pm

I agree with your reasoning Gordon I think it’s most likely season 16 or 21 next.
With season 1 having 33 episodes to restore & 37 for season 6, that’s a lot of time & work.
So maybe next year we may see 1 or 6, personally I’m going for 21 next based on what I have read & reasoned myself.

    • Gordon

      January 16th, 2025 - 9:32pm

S8 was roughly round the 50th anniversary but that was because of Covid delaying things rather than deliberately.

It’s worth noting that they filmed at the stones for stones of blood location for the Graeme Williams documentary

    • Tom Williams

      January 17th, 2025 - 5:27pm

      Hi Gordon .

Yes Filming took place with some used for the William Documentary. But they filmed a piece for Stones with an Archeologist but I’m not sure who.

I vaguely remember some filming to replace the model shots used.

I know the budget for this set is mostly being used towards the restoration of 3/4 of these stories. HOWEVER, as much as we would never get it, what does anyone think is happening with Spearhead from Space? The Blu ray release boasted a 2K restoration, would they or is it even possible to scan the film through at 4K?

Very unlikely, but worth a chat about nonetheless I’d say.

    • Craig F

      January 13th, 2025 - 6:24pm

Sadly a 16mm film scan can’t produce 4K quality, It needs to be at least a 35mm film print.

    • Gordon

      January 13th, 2025 - 6:34pm

It’s pretty much the same blu ray master as 2013

Peter Crocker says: It’s 99.5% identical to the 2012 BluRay. Only difference is extra sparkle (neg dirt) removal, edge dewarping on cuts (where necessary) and gate hair removal on episode 4. Worth mentioning that Mark has made some significant improvements to the sound on Spearhead. Much less echoey.

    • The DR.

      January 13th, 2025 - 6:40pm

      Gate Hair Removal?

    • Gordon

      January 13th, 2025 - 9:50pm

It’s essentially film debris. It gives a hair like appearance. A “hair in the gate” will remain in front of the film and create a dark line that sticks into the edge of the film frame as the camera is filming a shotn . A hair can ruin the shot and is almost impossible to fix in post production without using modern digital removal techniques.

      January 13th, 2025 - 11:53pm

Thanks Gordon, I was Totally Perplexed by that, Glad you Explained it in layman’s terms.

    • GeordieW

      January 14th, 2025 - 7:37am

It depends, some 16mm can really shine in 4K and it’s well worth doing, however I think we’re pretty lucky to have a story in HD at all so if this is all we get I’m happy.

Having said that I would buy a 4K version of it without a second thought.

    • Ricky

      January 14th, 2025 - 12:12pm

Standard Bluray would more than cover 16mm resolution itself for spearhead, where some 16mm material stands out when scanned and transferred to 4k is where wider colour and HDR is applied ,which would be nice if spearhead actually had that headroom in the print ,I do wonder if it does though .

    • Gordon

      January 14th, 2025 - 1:22pm

Texas chainsaw massacre scrubbed up nice in 4k despite being 16mm.

If spearhead in 4k ever did happen it most certainly would need its own release before going anyway near a collection set. A 4k restoration wouldn’t be cheap in the slightest.

    • Ricky

      January 14th, 2025 - 2:21pm

It did indeed ,for the 4k release it also got treated to a extensive restoration which helped alot, the evil dead also looked great.

4k and 8k scans of film material certainly has more space to allow the material to breath as it were ,less compression ,aslong as the detail is there in the first place.

    • Snowman

      January 14th, 2025 - 2:22pm

Is 4k the be all and end all?
I only ask as a Guy I worked with Quite a few years ago now (maybe 5 Years ago). when 4k Discs were just literally hitting the Shops, mentioned not bothering buying them.
He knew I was always interested in the latest Technology right from the VHS/Betamax days, Then I started buying DVDs and then the Blu-Rays Etc.
I remember having a Conversation with him saying I’d heard of a New Medium that was going to replace the Blu-Rays, (4k HD). He didn’t seem Enthusiastic at all and just said not to bother with them as Standard BluRay was more than Good enough. He also said that Company’s were Already Working on 8k HD Even though 4K Hadn’t Even hit the Shops yet. He said before Long there Would be 16k Discs being made and we’re would it all End? Saying ” just Save your Money mate, Standard Blu-Rays Excellent as it is”.
Don’t know how true it is but I thought I would mention the Conversation I had many Years ago now.

    • Snowman

      January 14th, 2025 - 2:43pm

Just Checked when 4k HD started hitting the Shops (2016) so the Conversation must have Been 8 Years ago. Can’t believe how Time Flies.

    • Ricky

      January 14th, 2025 - 5:58pm

If you have a larger quality 4k TV such as an oled at 55 inch and over it’s very worth it , the quality of picture is a big step up from standard Bluray with HDR and wide colour making a big difference if done right.
But the biggest jump is with sound quality , it’s on another level ,but you need a decent surround system to fully exploit what 4k UHD bluray has to offer.
Standard Bluray is still fantastic, but if you want the ultimate picture and sound for your favourite movies then there’s no comparison.

Peter Crocker on Twitter/Bluesky posted about Ambassadors of Death Pt 2

AoD3. Historically the most challenging episode as the off-air tape from WNED Buffalo has very little good colour and the colour recovery result was also comparatively poor. A lot of work has been needed to get closer to the quality we like.

      Ep 4

“Before Colour Recovery this would have been the hardest episode to return to restore as the off-air tape has no coherent or useful colour. We’re fortunate that CR is at the upper end of the spectrum.”

    • Gordon

      January 15th, 2025 - 6:37am

AoD5. The only episode for which the off air recording has relatively good colour throughout. However, the colour recovery result is also above average and with work gives better results.

Well I am looking forward to seeing the restoration on these stories. I remember back in the late eighties having a private copy of Ambassadors of Death from some where. The picture jumped regularly and kept going from colour to black and white. Worst still was there was a rainbow effect on screen. Certainly the pictures I have seen look good. Hopefully it won’t be long before we get the trailer.

from Colour recovery to B/W luminance and Colour broadcasts merging. It’s a vast improvement on the DvDs . As towards CGI, the package details have not been released yet,but will contain new material as have all the others.

No not this time. Optional effects are never a guarantee and the majority of the budget of s7 went on rightly restoring it. I doubt there was ever a serious consideration of alternative effects due to how extensive the restoration for this season. Going by the screengrabs that Peter Crocker has been posting on Bluesky/twitter of silurians and ambassadors it looks a great improvement over the DVDs. Being honest Season 7 was never going to be on the same level new special features wise that season 25 had. Lack or surviving contributors, extensive restoration work, plus the dvd’s already were comprehensive extras wise.

Certainly there is nothing wrong with the model of the Skarasen . It’s the way it moves . It’s the one thing that lets this classic down.
Maybe season 13 will be the next Tom Baker season to be released. Maybe after season 21.

      January 11th, 2025 - 9:57pm

I never saw anything wrong with it either but I do remember a few grumbles when they didn’t do new effects for the dvd. I guess this would rectify that.

I suspect there probably is only 4-5 season sets left that will get new effects.

Out of the colour seasons 13,16 and 21 I’m pretty certain will get. 11 all depends on how expensive the restoration work is on invasion of the dinos 1.

Out of the black and white seasons 4 I’m 100 percent pretty certain won’t get as there is no complete stories and I suspect they won’t do alternative effects on partially missing stories. Season 1 and 6 I doubt will on the basis of how many episodes those seasons have to restore. 3 could all depend on what has not been animated by the time they get on to that season. Season 5 seems like most likely out of the black and white seasons. A good chunk of it is ready to go restoration wise from the stand alone releases of abominable, web, fury and the special edition of enemy (it had an hd restoration for the se despite no blu ray). All may depend on the whether or not wheel gets its surviving eps get a new restoration or not prior to s5 release.

Well it looks like Barry Letts will get his wish of a better animated invasion of the dinosaurs.
Philip Hinchcliffe has also stated that the skarasen could be improved & feature more in terror of the zygons if visually improved.

    • Pete X

      January 12th, 2025 - 9:53am

Maybe for, at least, Terror of the Zygons they are going to re-film practical shots rather than use CGI.

The technique was used successfully on the Blakes Seven blu-ray e.g. the shots of the drone in Orac

Peter Crocker has been posting images daily on his twitter and blue sky accounts with some information on each episodes

Silurians ep 1: Several people have asked to see more screengrabs from the new restorations on the Dr Who season 7 Bluray collection, so I’ll post some from an episode each day. Here is Silurians ep 1. Colour Recovery did not work so colour is smudgy from the NTSC Betamax off-air tape from 1977.

Silurians ep 2: Silurians ep 2. Colour recovery worked but with marked random red blotches across the screen which were challenging to manage. Nevertheless, no off-air colour was needed so colour registration is better.

Episode 3: Silurians 3. Unfortunately another Colour Recovery failure, although the subcarrier did facilitate a double undistortion of the film recording. Fortunately the off-air recording which provides the colour, while soft and fuzzy, is not too bad.

Episode 4: Silurians 4. Reasonable colour recovery result so colours tend to have better registration, more detail and the inevitable CR minor hue fluctuations less troublesome than NTSC broadcast and domestic tape issues

Todays bit of info: Silurians Ep 5

“The off-air recording starts out poor but watchable, but by the end is unusable so Colour Recovery proved vital on this episode.

The film insert at the end of the episode was hand-coloured in 1992 for the VHS release but now has its true original colour.

For those that don’t do twitter/blue sky

Silurians 6. A sort of inverse ep 5 in terms of the off-air which starts unusable but improves as it progresses although is never great. Colour Recovery giving better results overall with tighter registration.

Silurians 7. Not a bad off-air recording, but CR also pretty good so gives better colour registration. CR also requires a lot of work to correct hue errors- major and minor – throughput but the end results are worth it to get the episode closer to how it looked in 1970.

The film recording for BBC Enterprises as made in parallel with UK transmission (always the most efficient and economic way if feasible) so unusually also captures the “next week” trailer. Being a direct VT feed it lacks the pres voiceover and captions that were added live.

This ties in with the colour recovery wiki only having 2, 4-7 listed. He said the most beneficial episodes of silurians with colour recovery is “Eps 5 and 6 where the off-air was largely poor.” He’s also said the stock footage from inferno hasn’t turned up. However the film inserts have been redone from scratch so will look better than before.

Another hint to the Colour Versions being included is ever Collection Boxset, the blurb on the back begins “BUILD YOUR OWN DOCTOR WHO ARCHIVE WITH THE ULTIMATE COLLECTOR’S SET!” – and the Animations were mostly made in 16:4 widescreen Colour First, with a 4:3 “OG broadcast” Style Black and White version being the alternative for the release… meaning there could be multiple ways of enjoying the story… no different to the Season 22-26 Boxsets where nearly all releases have alternate/extended versions of almost every story

    A related / non related Season 7 question…if I may…

For the earlier The Collection Limited Edition Packaging sets, where the disc trays have become loose/detached due to the original flexible glue drying out, what might be my fellow collectors solution to re-glue the trays?

Anyone had experience using glu dots (for example Bostik Extra Strong Glu-Dots, either the permanent or removable types)?

Thank you for your suggestions – appreciated.

My Suggestion is whatever wants gluing, look it up on the internet what type of Glue is suitable for the Material you are Gluing.
I.E. You want a Glue for Cardboard and Plastic. So Whatever Glue you Decide on, just Google if it’s suitable for Cardboard and Plastic and you’ll be fine. (Even Check Glu-Dots for Suitability if that’s what you want to use)
Not all Glues will be Suitable for both Cardboard and Plastic so always check First.

      January 4th, 2025 - 12:23pm

I’ve just had a Quick Google for you and it Says “Epoxy” Glue is bar far the best Glue for vastly different Materials such as Cardboard and Plastic.
A lot of Glues seem to work best when the Materials you are Gluing are Similar or the Same but Constantly Fail when the Materials you are Gluing are Vastly Different.
      Hope that Helps.

      January 4th, 2025 - 4:09pm

@Snowman… thank you for your replies), suggestions and research on my behalf – -very helpful and appreciated.

I totally agree a lot of glues fail when trying to glue two different dissimilar materials together. In addition not all plastic is the same and when a glue says “suitable for plastic” it doesn’t mean it will work, for example Super Glue won’t stick non-rigid plastic or polystyrene even though it says it will work with plastic. And white PVA will stick paper and wood effectively, it is useless for plastic. I think it’s also related to the absorbency of the material.

I suppose my question was a bit badly worded and I should have asked “Has any collector of these sets had any actual real world success sticking the trays back into the boxes, if so, what glue/solution did you use?”… I would have thought other collectors will have come across the same issue of the disc trays becoming detached… unless it really is just my luck..!

      Thank you

The savages bfi screening is on the 28th February (Friday) 5.30 pm with Peter in attendance taking part in both a q and an and a doing a signing. However We already know the release date is the 24th march for that one

There was 2 for the happiness patrol as it was supposed to have the new special edition version but in the first screening they didn’t realise they were showing the transmitted version so they did a second one with the new special edition to make up for it. Normally it’s just 1 screening.

55 years ago tonight at 5.15 I six and a half years old watched the first episode of Spearhead from Space in glorious black and white! I watched the repeat in the summer of 1971. But it wasn’t till 1988 with the VHS Omnibus release that I got to see it in colour. I got original DVD release, then the special edition release and Blu Ray release. Now I am about to get it again with the rest of the glorious season 7. I look forward to seeing how good the restoration is on these stories. How ever good these restorations are, we should all appreciate the hard work and love that goes into these boxsets .

I had a really strange Memory when you mentioned Colour TV. We only every had a old Black And White TV in the Sixties and Seventies, so every Show and Film was in Black and White back then.
Aswell as Loving Dr Who I always watched the Muppets every Week. Even though I watched the Show in Black and White I had a Vision in my head what every Character would look like in Colour. Then Years later when we rented a Colout TV (From Redifusion I think)? I clearly remember Sitting down to Watch the Muppet Show and Boy was I Surprised by the Characters Colours. (Nothing like I had imagined for all those Years). Apart from Kermit, Green and Miss Piggy, Pink, what a shock I had.
I suppose back then a lot of Programmes I watched for the First time in Colour looked very Different, but I’ve never forgotten that Memory.

We nearly got 1 for 25 with 7 and ace at coal hill school. It was written but fell through due to Pete’s schedule with in between the land and the sea spin off and we got a clips trailer instead. Pete has also said he’s got 1 half shot which I expect is for 21 so they definitely ain’t gone for good.

The blu rays are worth getting for the wealth of new bonus features produced for it alone. I would say the majority of the special editions have been worth it. Especially the alternative 23-26 versions created for the collection sets. As for the omnibuses I’ll probably never say they are better than the episodic versions but they are mostly fun for what they are. The daemons, day of the daleks, sea devils, green death, planet of the spiders, genesis of the daleks were all broadcast on bbc tv in the 1970s along with a 60 minute version of Pyramid of mars (which will be included on season 13). The enlighenment omnibus I like but don’t love. The planet of fire one I thought was horrible. The alternative effects in the blu ray range have been mostly excellent. The only one I wasn’t keen was the planet of the daleks.

    • David McCallum

It’s also worth considering the surround sound mixes and enhanced soundtracks that Mark Ayres has produced for some of the sets – the one for “Destiny of the Daleks” is particularly good. Generally I prefer to watch the episodes “as transmitted” (and that is not meant as any criticism of the new effects!) but I do love these new soundtracks.

Last year admittedly I definitely went back and forth in my mind as to whether I should still go for the standard Blu-rays as I’d given up with the Limiteds, and the big concerns over Ai / DNR being over-used on Seasons 15 and 25.

I may likely change my mind again on this who knows – but for now I’ve made peace in feeling that the Standard Edition Blu-rays are the way to go when on special discount.

There’s a fine line between what say, a 1:1 picture quality purist wants from a raw, non edited piece of video stock, and what an actual consumer chilling on the couch having the satisfaction of a completed product.

My specific issue was more to do with image softening that had been added after the dvd range – but I get it. Yes there’s going to be a ton of natural artefacting when you scale up such small resolution video – if you look at ‘The Horror of Fang Rock’ there’s very noticeable signal-looking lines sometimes running horizontal, sometimes diagonal, major enough to have avoided the denoising. It is instantly noticeable, and for people that can’t understand it (or can’t stand it being a distraction) then it becomes a marmite situation on a consumer level.

Classic Doctor Who’s in the weird position of often having such low, miniscule resolution video that for all of our 50+ inch 4k tv’s today, inevitably any form of technology is going to attempt to upscale it, generating more artefacts, good or bad results, compression issues, etc. That is where a Blu-ray release comes in to do what it can to have already brought the episodes as up to spec as possible, on a commercial viable basis, to deliver an easily playable, enjoyable boxset per release.

This probably sounds like a ton of rambling so I’ll end on this; the above is how I’ve made my peace with it for now. This isn’t the same situ. of James Cameron or Aardman being cheapskates refusing to go back to their giant resolution film negatives of their movies that could easily generate native 4k products, instead spewing out badly handled ai tat from 1080p intermediates – no, with Classic Doctor Who it’s about trying to bring very tiny picture sources ‘up’ to Blu-ray spec resolution.

Do I wish the final picture quality was sharper? Yes – but for all that I’ve described above, it simply is not possible without going overboard. The further you go the more uncanny valley the final product becomes.

Why would they put the colour versions on Collection Seasons 1,3,4,5 & 6 ? They never were in colour at the time of their release.

They are already available separately on Blu-ray (those animations that have been done to date).

As Gordon has stated it increases the Disc size of the 60’s collections to excess, many will already have them in their collections anyway, it just seems incorrect to put colorized versions in the 60’s sets, it misrepresents what the seasons stood for at the time.

Just the Black and White animations only, my thoughts.

They included a colour trailer for galaxy 4 on the time medlar disc which suggests to me that the colour versions will be included. I don’t really see the problem with the inclusion as long as there is room. No difference to the omnibus versions of silurians and inferno or the special editions of season 25. Those didn’t exist either. The animations might need more than 1 disc anyway once you take into account the animated footage will be true HD thus taking up more space than the live action footage and the new special features will be HD too. Seasons 3 and 4 are gonna be big sets regardless if colour versions are included or not

I agree. I actually hope it is just the black and white versions of the animations on the Collection sets.

I even wouldn’t mind if they missed off the animated episode if the real one exists too so it is just the actual missing ones that appear as animations/telesnaps.

Keeps something unique to the people who have collected the animation releases too.

Gordon, there only exists a colour trailer for Galaxy 4, and most of the animations since The Macra Terror. They’ve stopped doing B&W trailers after Power of the Daleks. So, that’s not really an indicator.

It will probably be like Season 17 with Shada where they included both the feature length, and 6 parter. And that was also in true HD.

    • Bob

      December 31st, 2024 - 11:37pm

To be honest there isn’t really a difference in file size between upscaled and native HD. Shada takes up significantly less space on The Collection Season 17 than it did on its 2017 Blu-Ray release which leads me to believe it’ll be the same with the other animations. 4 part animations will probably be on a single disc and 6 parters on two rather than three. With all missing stories animated, my guess is that Seasons 3 and 4 would be the biggest at 12 discs each. If The Daleks’ Master Plan never gets animated, or at least not in time for the boxset, I could see “The Dalek Invasion of Earth in Colour” and/or “The Chase in Colour” included as a subsitute.

    December 30th, 2024 - 1:00pm

I am curious to see whats gonna happen to future set regarding versions of the stories. The main thing I wonder about is the missing ep animations/telesnap. Honestly I would like all 3 versions of each story (back & white, colour and telesnaps) as that just feels more complete to me. I have no idea if its possible with the amount of discs they can have (if they have a disc a limit)

I don’t want Tales of the Tardis on sets as we are already beyond the point of being to include all of them (would still like them to get there own set tho)

Colourisations I am not sure. The 2 we have so far could be included on future sets but if they keep making them then most likely will end up doing one that has already had a collection set. So if the 2 we have are it then yeah include them but if they do more then keep them separate.

I would also like Twice Upon A Time to be included on the season 4 set as it ties into The Tenth Planet similar to how Time Crash and Death of the Doctor were included.

      December 31st, 2024 - 1:20am

The stand alone releases are worked out for dvd disc space despite being blu ray I’m sure you could fit all 3 versions on 2 blu ray discs for 4-6 episode stories with extras if they were clever with how they use the disc space and perhaps have the recon episodes as standard definition. Maybe colour episodes and extras on 1 disc and black and white and recon on the other. The colour version of power and the telesnap recon fitted on the power steelbook so it might be possible To fit everything in 2. Think evil would need 3 disc for all 3 versions. Alternatively for completely missing stories have angle branching both colour and black and white could potentially fit on the same disc but I’m not sure how possible that is.

Season 1 could probably be 9 discs if Marco gets animated. 8 if not. At a push you could use the inside the spaceship disc for the recon as there should be plenty of space there

Season 3 as it currently stands would need 9 discs for g4, the ark, toymaker, gunfighters, savages and war machines alone. Myth makers and massacre inanimated would take it to 11. Animated would make it 13. Mission would be 12/14. Masterplan animated would probably need 2 discs unanimated and 4 animated so in total 14 unanimated and 18 animated.

Season 4 currently would need 13 discs currently. Potentially 14 if they want to include the 2016 versions of power too. 16 if both highlanders and smugglers was animated.

If wheel is animated Season 5 will probably need 10 discs. 9 if not.

With the likes of invasion and war games both needing 2 discs to fit on the extras you would be looking at 9 discs without animation, 10 with space pirates animated.

It’s possible that the disc trays maybe slightly different for seasons 3 and 4 to accomidate so many discs if need be.

As for tales for the tardis I’m surprised it hasn’t had a separate release. I wouldn’t mind if they just included the bookends on the wilderness years set as it’s too late to include most of them (mind robber and pyramid of mars excluded). If they are going to include the mind robber one on season 6 they might include it through branching so I doubt it will take up much room. Wouldn’t be too surprised if there was a repackaging once everything had been wrapped up to include them and other bits and pieces.

I don’t see the problem including them even if more turn up later. Daleks in colour could feature in inside the spaceship and war games in colour could go with the war games bonus features disc. There is more than enough room for both on said discs.

I’m sure there is space to include twice upon a time on tenth planet.

      Gordon
With regards to s3 and s4 would it not be better to split then into 2 but incased in a larger limited style stronger box. Still get the limited style to fit with the rest of the collection (pardon the pun) and would mean boxes wouldn’t buckle under the weight of the amount of discs.
Think we know both s3 and s4 are going to be the most expensive with the amount of episodes and possible content if more get animated before the season releases. With the latest few being around 54 I’m going to guess around the 70 mark specially for s3.

Plus this won’t be the last sets released. Once all the 60s have been animated and haven’t already been done for the collection they’re definitely going to rerelease 1-6 with everything on. Maybe not in the same style maybe as standard box box sets so smaller and compact.

So Gordon, do you know if season 1is been worked on? Are friend Prowl in one of his excellent videos, seems to think Season 1 maybe the second season release of 2025. Personal I think it is more likely to be 21 . We will see.

    • Gordon

      December 31st, 2024 - 12:29pm

@James It’s possible that might happen regarding s3 split into 2 smaller boxes in the same release. I know they won’t split the releases though. They have said numerous times they have no plans to do so. It’s a good 4-5 years off though. Not anyway saying it will but plans can always change

I’m certainly expecting a repackaging at some point but probably not until after the range is done. To maybe have complete doctor sets and possibly include any animations and tales. Perhaps steelbooks at some point and also a cheaper just the episodes versions. Not expecting anything new though.

@prof when asked about season 1 and 6 Richard bignell was quick to say season 6 restoration work hadn’t been started. He didnt admit season 1 work had been started but however he didn’t deny it either. The lack of denial suggests to me at least some part of season 1 has been worked on. It’s possible it could be the next 60s set and out later in the year. However I do think it’s most likely 21 and if it’s not 21 it’s 16 but I also don’t rule out season 1. Think it will be 1 of those 3

I think season 1 set is a while away as the Rights to AUC are held up. With Steff Coburn ,who holds the rights of his father’s estate. He thinks his Dad created Doctor who abd wants lots of back dated royalties. No sign of a break through it would seem. Even the Target Novel Audiobook is scuppered for 2 rights reasons.

With no Auc and no MP. It would seem very problematic . Even MP is missing an episode of telesnaps, so making one from scratch is a big job.

The BBC would never concede they didn’t own create DW.

      December 31st, 2024 - 2:20pm

From what I’ve been told the issue should not prevent a blu ray release and its inclusion in season 1. Steve Roberts who worked on the dvd range says the rights on physical releases of it are in perpetuity. The issues are down to streaming and the audiobook is because it’s a newly created version.

As for telesnaps derek handley has already said episodes that don’t have telesnaps should not be a problem. We got pretty good recons of g4 and toymaker despite no telesnaps existing

I feel season 21 and season 1 for next year tbh as we had season 15 this year which would make sense for not having another Tom baker very soon but if it was the case season 16 would be a good fit but I more think 2026 would include that alone with hopefully a first Patrick troughten one

    • Tom Williams

      December 31st, 2024 - 3:51pm

But also could be possible we see three now for next few years off course three next year then there would only be 10 including wilder years so next two if it was 21/1/16 then 2026 the next three which would leave 4 left and maybe 2 only in 2027 then 2 in 2028 ?

    • Tom Williams

      December 31st, 2024 - 3:56pm

With Savages filling another gap in S3 what will they do next or which will not be done and missed on The S3 Collection?

Massacre and Myth both have all 4 EPs missing
DMP has 9 out of 12 missing
    Mission is a single episode.
Would the BBC use Uniclan version and buy it off them? Or would they do their own animation? Or could they use it and give royalties to Uniclan?

Any news on a S7 trailer? Guessing the leak meant it has to be announced earlier then planned so wasn’t time to do one or it isn’t finished yet to do one yet?

Then with S4 is it definite that Highlanders would be missed in favour of Smugglers?

      December 28th, 2024 - 3:45pm

I think sadly it may be Master Plan – unless we get a pipedream come true – i think eventually at some point there will be none missed out, but not in time for the collection classic range. Massacre and Myth probably as 8 more episodes to animate as compared to 13 for a ‘viable’ season and mission could well be represented by the UniCLan version as well as even – dare i say – the Levine one too. If they did Mission alongside Master Plan, which I assume they would, it would be so easy after having done master plan because virtually all the assets would have been created for it through master plan.

shame about S7, unless they release that a little before the set actually comes out like they use to a week or so before for most sets, rather than when they were going to do it.

I think they would probably get the smugglers done because of how difficult Highlanders would be, and then there’d probably be a more equal number of left out stories comparing hartnell to troughton as well

    • Prowl 1701

      December 28th, 2024 - 4:20pm

I don’t think there will be a Season 7 trailer, until the launch trailer when the boxset comes out. I could see shapeshifter studios maybe doing a 3D animation for highlanders.

    • Gordon

      December 29th, 2024 - 1:20am

As I’ve said before it could be any number of reasons why there isn’t any trailer. Pete mctighe who normally does them is busy working on the war between the land and sea spin off. He may have been too busy to make one. Also as the only regular alive is Benton and he wasn’t really a regular at that point there might not be anything for him. Also it could be that the restored footage wasn’t yet available to make a trailer to advertise it. Could be any number of reasons.

As for the uclan remake it’s unsure if it even can be used for physical releases. With the nation estate needing the ok first it might not
be clearable even if the bbc wants to use it.

Even if they get clearance they may not use it as it uses a different soundtrack to the original. Sure they could probably work it to fit but however I Think they will animate it to fit in with masterplan for consistency. I still think masterplan is a long way off as it’s at least 3 year commitment minimum regardless of they do the whole thing or just the gaps.

Personally I think the next one will be from the shapeshifter team assuming they are getting another go. It’s been 9 months since toymaker was completed so hopefully the next one is half done already. Either smugglers, myth makers, wheel or space pirates but it’s hard to call which will get done first. I see smugglers next but can’t see it being done in the shapeshifter style so can see it being done like savages style so maybe wheel myth makers or “space pirates. I think highlanders will get attempted but not just yet. Once those 4 are out of the way I can see it and massacre getting a shot leaving crusade Marco Polo and masterplan left after that

    • Prof Horner

      December 29th, 2024 - 1:55pm

Well there are nine stories ( if you include Mission to the Unknown as part of The Daleks master plan) left to animate.
Six of which are historical serials. As it seems unlikely that either Marco Polo or The Crusade will be done any time soon. That leaves four four part historical serials to do .Myth Makers and The Smugglers seems the most likely to be done first . Myth Makers from shape-shifter and Smugglers from BBC studios next maybe . We could do with a historical done next . But I would love it if it turned out to be The Space Pirates next!

    • Gordon

      December 30th, 2024 - 2:25am

Well if the range is continuing long term they are going to have to hit a historical within the next 4 stories there is only 3 non historical stories left (mission/masterplan, wheel in space and space pirates) . If masterplan is being left for now it only leaves either a historical or a Zoe story. Out of the 2 Zoe stories I’d rather have space pirates as I feel the best bits of wheel already exists or was part of the minisode. Out of the historicals I’d love Marco Polo the most but I feel that one is probably one of the last 3 along with masterplan and crusade. In my head myth makers or smugglers is probably next. Myth makers has the more memorable moments with the fight in ep 1 and the epic finale. The next few missing stories could be interesting if it’s historicals. The likes of smugglers has a bit of an unknown quality to them similar to savages and the likes of myth makers massacre and highlanders are more known for the exit of vikki and entrances of dodo and Fraser than the actually stories

    • Craig F

      December 30th, 2024 - 10:47pm

Is the problem with the massacre being animated because its a historical or the lack of visual references.
As there’s no tele-snaps for this story & I think only 10 pictures exist.
If its to be done will it be AI ?

    • Gordon

      December 31st, 2024 - 1:25am

When I mean it hasn’t been done as part of the collection I mean the bfi have never done it as part of their usual doctor who screenings. It was in the blue room which only houses 60-100 capacity.

In terms of Pertwee stories chosen so far In 2013 they did mind of evil as it had been recently recoloured. Season 10 in 2019 it was planet of the daleks. Season 8 didn’t get one because of Covid. The sea devils was done in 2023

Just season 8. Non collection set wise Fury from the deep and web of fear also didn’t get.

Pre collection sets there was a series of screenings in 2013 1 per doctor per month for the 50th. Unearthly child, tomb, mind of evil, robots of death, caves of androzani, two doctors, remembrance, tv movie, bad wolf/parting of the ways, the stolen earth/journeys end and to finish a preview of an adventure in time and space. Not sure if any of them got postcards. Not at the bfi but enemy and web also got a double bill screening at the prince charles cinema in February 2014. There has also been a number of recent screenings at the riverside though I’m not sure if those had postcards

I wonder if the Season 4 boxset will include the colour version of The Power of the Daleks. It’s going to be quite a big set, probably 10+ discs so I can see them excluding it to save space since it’s widely considered to be an inferior version.

I think it would have been cool if they announced this set with a trailer after War Games in Colour tonight. Wouldn’t that be cool to end War Games and follow it up with “Continue the adventures with the 3rd Doctor with the new box set” or something.
Of course that would have been scuppered by the leak, but perhaps they still intend to show the trailer after?
I do doubt they would show the actual trailer since it would technically be an advert? I guess realistically the most I can hope for is the continuity guy talking about it briefly like they do often “advertise” books and such.

Does anyone know if rare waves take payment immediately? Haven’t pre ordered with them before. Thanks in advance!

Payment is taken at the time of your order I believe

Payment is taken when you preorder. There is a 10% discount at the moment from Rarewaves which makes up for it a little!
