Zavvi have taken payment for this already. Looks like I’ll be getting it about a week early at this rate

i just thought you just collected the limited editions gordon. why both? They arent overally attractive as the limiteds and its not like you are going to save much space. Have you succumb, to use these rather than wear and tear the original releases?

Have just received mine from Zavvi. A whole 6 days before the official release date. That has to be some sort of record.

As Season 22 is heavily rumoured to be next, should we expect an official announcement on January 5th since that’s when Season 22 first aired in 1985?…

    Who knows…

Could very well be. The same Swiss website that had season 17 and galaxy 4 up early has season 22 up for preorder for the 14th March and also has the standard edition of 14 on the 21st march

That sounds like very good news. Chris chapman on his Twitter has mentioned filming 3 new doctor who special features over the course of last year. A making of, a location journey and a looking for. Hopefully the making of is for the two doctors, the location journey will most likely be the rumoured filming at Blist hill and revelation locations. I have no idea what the looking for could be but that’s probably for the set after, maybe for season 9. Hopeful we hear more on 5th of January so we can have something to look forward too this year

Ill mark that down on the calendar for 14. Only season 8 to get then i can watch 24 onwards fresh.

Iirc, Auton, the Looking for…s are about writers. If the one filmed by Chris Chapman is for S22 then it would likely be for Paula Moore writer of Attack of the Cybermen. All the other writers of S22 being known quantities and previously interviewed.

If for S9 (also my 2022 Pertwee release guess) then (likely) Robert Sloman (writer with Barry Letts of the last stories of Ss 8-11) or Louis Marks (would also fit on an S2 release).

My T. Baker release guess for this year is S15 – but that wouldn’t require a Looking for…, all the writers being either known quanities with existing DVD features or previous interviews.

Chris did briefly mention on twitter that he had made a location making of for abominable snowman when the animation was announced but he swiftly deleted it. I assume that he wasn’t supposed to say that until the extras are finalised. The looking for could be for season 9. I’ve also been hearing Peter purves and Maureen o Brian have apparently been doing behind the sofa for season 2. I suppose they could be banking stuff for that and the looking for alternatively could be for that

    • Auton

      January 2nd, 2022 - 8:18am

Not all looking fors have been writers, season 10 had looking for Lennie Mayne who was a director. Those 3 season Pete are my predicted next 3 as well. They could do a looking for the director of Underworld for season 15 Norman Stewart.
Gordon, perhaps they filmed the behind the sofa with Maureen O’Brien and Peter Purves now as Maureen was in the country as she normally, from what I hear, lives in France. At least it’s good to hear they are banking and making stuff. Chris Chapman did say the 3 special features I mentioned above were for the Who-ray rather than for animation so perhaps he has done a 4 special features. And this doesn’t include all the special features made by other Who-ray contributors

The Swiss site has the listing here

      https://www.1advd.ch/film/BLU-RAY+Englandimport/Doctor+Who+The+Collection+Season+22+/33476932

All sounds very good and promising for future releases

      January 3rd, 2022 - 9:12pm

      Thanks for the correction Auton.

I wonder whether Maureen O’Brien has done an interview with Matthew Sweet for the eventual S2 release.

    • Auton

      January 3rd, 2022 - 9:35pm

I hope so, Maureen o’brien hasn’t been interviewed that much on the dvd range so an in conversation would perfect

    • DanielM

      January 8th, 2022 - 10:16pm

@ Auton Chris Chapman uses the term Who-ray for both the stuff he makes for the Collection and the Animations so not everything that he has made in the last Year has been for one particular Range.

I listen to Alexei Sayle’s podcast and I’m his Christmas Day episode he said he’d very recently recorded a commentary with Nicola Bryant. He said he didn’t know when it was coming out but it seems like he had a great time doing it. So possible Season 22 incoming?

Sounds promising and 100% Revelation related. S22 out at some point in 2022 I would expect

    • Gordon

      December 26th, 2021 - 4:23pm

If I remember right Revelation was also the only story of colin that he didn’t do a commentary from the dvd range. Hopefully he’s also on it.

    • Rex Farrel

      December 26th, 2021 - 7:53pm

I thought he skipped Revelation because of who wrote it, and I don’t think anything has changed on that score?

    • Gordon

      December 26th, 2021 - 8:42pm

I think it was because Eric was on the dvd commentary. He did do a revelation commentary for who talk so I wouldn’t rule it out

    • Gordon

      December 26th, 2021 - 9:05pm

Considering how much stuff has leaked about season 22 filming I will be gobsmacked if it isn’t the next release. Colin being offering filming in Spain, colin seen filming in November with his blue cape, colin saying at London comic con that he was off doing mark of the rani extras the next day, colin also said at Chicago tardis that he was going to be doing behind the sofa with Nicola Bryant the week after and now this.

    • CK

      December 27th, 2021 - 12:15am

From the pod he only mentioned Nicola being present so might not be with Colin, though I sincerely hope he is present.

    • Auton

      December 27th, 2021 - 8:51am

Colin having been seen wearing his blue cape shows that even if Colin isn’t in the commentary with Alexei and Nicola, he will be taking part in some revelation related special feature

    • Daniel

      December 27th, 2021 - 10:58am

Colin has recorded a commentary with WhoTalk for Revelation of the Daleks

  • The ergon

    December 17th, 2021 - 1:47am

I ,m hoping your predictions are wrong gordon and we get 8 and 14 done sometime next year. Then i can pick up where i left the limiteds and get season 24 before the year is out and see those extras fresh for that particular boxset for the first time.. ill avoid all spoilers for season17 and subsequant releases onwards in the comments section. I dont mind being 2 or 3 behind.

Wish for these releases they had used one of the classic logos rather than the current DW logo, as no doubt when RTD returns to the show there will be a massive rebranding, and probably enforced usage of new logo on merchandise?

Apparently, assurance has been given that the current logo will remain on this series, even if the show adopts a new one.

Not related to The Collection sets but does anyone know if there’s plans for new steelbook versions of series 9 and 10? I remember seeing a post ages ago related to those and series 1 and 2 getting re-releases but there’s been nothing for months. Been a good 8 months since series 8 getting a bit worried they’ve just stopped and that I’ll need to cave and pay scalper prices for 1 and 9.

Nothing official unfortunately but I expect we’ll see both 9 and 10 (with TUAT disc included) at some point.

This range of steelbooks is separate to the Amazon exclusive ones and the first Series 5 steelbook.

Series 9 would fit nicely into the March,/April slot for next year. Fingers crossed.

Got to be honest I can take or leave this season I’ve got em all on vhs and dvd so I may leave iit at that. McCoy’s second season is by far his best. Waiting for a Troughton or Hartnell season and the Key to Time to be released most.

Not a perfect match for the shelf aesthetic, but all the same disc content, I understand. There are loads of videos on YouTube that compare the two packagings

Discs are in a jumbo Niue Elte case. The booklet revised and includes less information and photos.

Interesting that theres not a vast price difference between this and the other.

      December 16th, 2021 - 8:33pm

To be fair Popplewick, There virtually the same just ones a limited Edition and this one will be available much, much longer.
It has all the same come Disc content and even includes the booklet (abridged version).

    • Popplewick

      December 16th, 2021 - 8:39pm

Lordy me quite a difference . Surprising.

      December 16th, 2021 - 9:04pm

Standard versions seem very cheap in comparison to the Limited Editions where the only benefit is you’ll save some space.

The discs are exactly the same though which is the main reason to upgrade to the Season sets.

Very thin cardboard slip case with text.
Normal style blu-ray box which holds all 7 discs but because of this you can’t really see the Tardis Console Room Artwork.
Blu-ray box cover is textless version with Tardis on back.
Booklet very small -more of a pamphlet really. Has very little detail as covers mainly the disc content lists, Lots of artwork missing because of this.

    • the ergon

      December 16th, 2021 - 11:04pm

They do just save space and a little more time getting them out of the case and into the player with less chance of wear and tear but serviceable. Further down the line after these seasons are completed i wish they would put episodes and content onto special 4K USB sticks in full season boxsets. So much easier just to plug in the back of the TV and devices and cuts time to get the episodes on without all the fuss of the logos and navigation..

    • Type 40

      December 17th, 2021 - 12:52am

I prefer the standard versions. They are more robust than the limited edition ones, and they save a lot of shelf space.

    • The ergon

      December 17th, 2021 - 1:58am

And they go better with the original new series blu ray Well that is until you get to new series11. And the main reason i didnt collect the jodie releases. Artwork on the limiteds are good but its the content im interested in.

Oh I get you, the NEW logo.

    • Coleman

      December 16th, 2021 - 5:38pm

Is it just me or is their hardly any difference at all with the new logo?
All I can say is I hope they havnt spent hundreds of thousands of licence payers money for a Graphic Designer to come up with this.

    • Doug Who

      December 16th, 2021 - 7:13pm

      Hi Coleman,
They slightly redesigned the font to make it their own to avoid continually paying to use an existing font I believe.
Don’t know how much the redesign cost but in the long term it will save the Beeb money.

    • Coleman

      December 16th, 2021 - 8:14pm

      Hello Doug.
Yes, hardly any difference, just smaller font and spaced further apart I believe.
If it saves the fee payers money in future, that’s a good thing.

    • Coleman

      December 16th, 2021 - 8:18pm

Maybe if they do save a substantial amount of money in future they can put it towards the Doctor Who animation teams.

I’d guess May 2022 for season 14 and March 2023 for 8. Both 23 and 26 had a 2 year gap between limited and standard releases

    • Mr. Fabulous

      December 18th, 2021 - 1:24pm

Yeah, can’t wait to get both in the standard version. Maybe a little ray of sunshine for the new year and season 13 will get a release? I’d even consider buying the special edition for that one.

    • the ergon

      January 1st, 2022 - 8:58pm

If we can get 14, 8, 24 and heck even 17 before the year 2022 is out that would really be something. one every 3-4 months apart.
