Incidentally gordon, it might be interesting and a bit of fun if you could compile a speculative list (when youre not too busy) of what you think the remaining collection trailers might look like.

The BBC normally release after 3pm, so we shall see. It’s someone who works for a Doctor Who organisation, it’s not embargoed just word of mouth. But we know Maureen and Peter filmed together for the trailer.

I’m hearing that Dutch doctor who cosplay fans were invited to the filming locations of arc of infinity yesterday. What they didn’t expect was to go on a canal boat with Peter Davison, Janet fielding, Sarah Sutton and mark Strickson with a film crew. Yep they finally got round to filming that Amsterdam documentary

3 bits of info I’ve found in the last few days.

    1. Mark ayres posted a picture of a mixing chart on Saturday and said dunmixing. Peter Crocker responded saying “Just under six minutes. Smells a bit trailerish to me”

    2. Matthew sweet tweeted on Sunday that he was filming an in conversation. No word on who it is. Assuming what mark was working on was the trailer for the next set I assume this conversation isn’t for the next set due to the trailer already being done and the trailer normally includes some footage of the in conversations. I suspect it’s mark Strickson as point 3 proves he’s in the U.K. at the moment.

    3. Fantom films tweeted on Monday saying they had done a private signing with Mark Strickson (it was because he had to pull out of a convention they were hosting last month due to “a work schedule change”) with a picture of him with the river Thames in the background. This proves he’s definitely in the U.K. just now.

    From Janet fielding’s twitter:

Two days in the studio for

    Again watch out folks.

    • RPG74

      July 24th, 2022 - 10:54pm

If the Amsterdam stuff hasn’t been filmed yet wouldn’t it mean 20 is more likely to drop early next year?

    • RPG74

      July 24th, 2022 - 10:59pm

Never mind. When I typed my comment, Auton’s comment wasn’t viewable for some reason. Early next year it is!

    • J45ON96

      July 24th, 2022 - 11:20pm

I would imagine Seasons 1 and 20 will be out next year for the 60th, and this seems to corroborate my suspicions

    • Gordon

      July 25th, 2022 - 12:55am

Seems an obvious choice for the 60th anniversary year

Potential extras excluding the trips to Amsterdam and Germany that we already know about:

      Behind the sofa
      The doctor’s table
      Kings demons making of
      Richard Hurndall tribute
      Janet Fielding in conversation
      Sarah Sutton in conversation
      Studio footage (where available)
5.1 mixes for snakedance and enlightenment (might be a push but maybe 5 doctors too)
Alternative effects on the transmitted version of enlightenment (snakedance and kings demons I don’t think would really benefit from new effects)

    • The ergon

      July 25th, 2022 - 1:14am

I know its only 2 episodes but i really would like New Kamelion effects for kings, if just to match with those of planet of fire and also updated effects for The five Doctors rather than the dated blue swirls from the 2003 release also and i think you mentioned this before Gordon but the Enlightenment 4 parter with optional effects from the DVD black guardian trilogy. Well it is the 60th anniversary after all.

    • Prof Horner

      July 25th, 2022 - 9:45am

What reason would they be going to Germany? Well as long as we get season 2and 9 before this season 20 I will be happy. Truth is I haven’t seen most of this season for a long time . I only have the original DVD of The Five Doctors. To me there is a horrible flatness about this season. But I would like to be surprised. The extras are always interesting. Certainly Arc of Infinity and Enlightenment deserve another look. And the first four stories feature my favorite Doctor Who girl and what she does in here last story is very nice!

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 25th, 2022 - 10:24am

Agreed 20 is rubbish apart from Enlightenment which I rate very highly and Nyssa is lovely I agree with Peter Davison it would have been much better if it was just the two of them the whole time

    • Gordon

      July 25th, 2022 - 11:39am

The reason they did a road trip to Germany was because they were filming them travelling to a convention in kessell Germany which Peter Janet and Sarah were all attending together (all 3 at the same convention at the same time is said not to happen very often). On the plus side doing this gave them the idea of doing a similar one travelling to Amsterdam.

As for season 20 it’s a mixed bag. Arc of infinity isn’t anything special but I also don’t think it’s awful. It’s ok. Love the location stuff (I’ve actually been to Amsterdam so I’ve walked round it) but it really didn’t need to be in Amsterdam. Could have been anywhere. I like Snakedance but it doesn’t live up to the amazing kinda. Another sequel that doesn’t live up to the original. Mawdryn undead is fun with the brig being back even if it didn’t make much sense being a schoolteacher to me. Shame the script is a bit of a mess. Terminus is dull. Apart from Nysa leaving I don’t remember much of it. Enlightenment is excellent with a good guest cast. The kings demons is kind of nothing episodes. Why is the master in disguise and why is the disguise so rubbish. Plus kamelion is also rubbish.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 25th, 2022 - 12:21pm

That’s actually a really good summary of series 20 Gordon I mostly agree with much of that. I would add it’s also very static particularly Mawdyn Undead I quite like Peter Moffat and love All creatures great and small but I don’t think he was very well suited to Doctor Who his episodes are very stagey and not visually engaging lacks the energy of directors like Peter Grimwade. Enlightenment is just such a shining gem, it’s not overlit the model work is superb and Peter is spot on, his Doctor is only as good as the scripts he was given with a good script his performances lift. Good point on sequels Kinda was excellent too, I think the whole of 20 is a disappointing sequel to a very under-rated and brilliant series 19 which was definitely the last season before the downfall

    • The ergon

      July 25th, 2022 - 7:32pm

There are guilty pleasures in even the worst episodes though. Even some of the best stories can sometimes feel overrated.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 25th, 2022 - 10:46pm

True that I’ve never understood why Twin Dilemma is treated as the worst ever by many it’s not great but it’s not even the worst Colin Baker story for me and better than most of series 20

    • Prof Horner

      July 25th, 2022 - 11:35pm

Thanks for clearing up the Germany trip Gordon. Yes I agree with your view on season 20. The King’s demons would have made more sense with The Monk in it. As you say The Master in disguise doing his french taughter act is very silly. It is almost like he is expecting The Doctor to turn up. Then there is the problem of Turlough in Mawdryn undead in episode 2 when the capsule disappears when Turlough canes comes out with that nonsense about something something warp something, why doesn’t The Doctor turn around to him and say how can a school boy at a dreadful minor public school know about any of that. It doesn’t make sense. As for Snakedance I did actually have it on my old sky box after recording off horror channel some years ago. But found it so deadly dull and boring didn’t get through the first episode. You are right about Enlightenment the late great Keith Barron was as always excellent, But the star of the show was I believe Christopher Brown with his creepy interest in Tegan.

    • The ergon

      July 26th, 2022 - 12:31am

Even something as excrable as The twin dilemma has its moments.

    • The ergon

      July 26th, 2022 - 12:51am

Also i find that the 2 parters from PeterDavisons era might have benefited with an extra episode instead of trying to cram it all in and tying it all up in the last 25 minutes when it built up suspense in the opener, especially with a story like for example, The awakening. That might have worked so much better with that third episode. It might have helped trimming the fat off a few of those padded 4 parters to make up the difference.

    • Philip Shaw

      July 26th, 2022 - 4:25pm

It was obviously J.N.T’s obsession with going abroad but why not? The Doctor and co spend much of their time landing in, London, or Sheffield recently, why not Spain, Amsterdam, Lanzarote, San Francisco, or Paris.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 27th, 2022 - 7:46am

Because like everything else it was so contrived which only added to the pressure on the script writers. He would go on holiday and demand they fuse his holiday destinations into the stories.
Paris worked because it was an intricate part of the plot in City of Death and is a classic for it. The rest are there for the sake of it. It is the same mentality as having an Australian air stewardess companion to get popularity in Australia or American for the same reasons. Both Christopher H Bidmead and Eric Saward could not work with him, Bidmead walked and Saward bickered. All of his doctors complained they did not have a voice especially with their costumes, Peter Davison in particular claimed about the poor scripts in series 20 and the American companion citing these as reasons for leaving.
Filming aboard for the sake of it was damaging for the budget and the scripts, he just wanted to have a good time. This is the man who stopped using one of his very best directors because he didn’t get invited to lunch

    • Mark Moxham

      July 27th, 2022 - 12:30pm

Season 20 was the reason Davison didn’t renew for a 4th year.
All the comments here are spot on.
So who would bother to buy the box se

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 27th, 2022 - 1:16pm

I would for completion reasons, for Enlightenment and The Five Doctors, for the excellent VAM which is always so rich and enjoyable and for Nyssa taking her clothes off

    • Prof Horner

      July 27th, 2022 - 2:43pm

Well said Bobby, I certainly agree with everything you said in this post, particularly the last bit!

    • D84

      July 27th, 2022 - 3:00pm

I will absolutely be buying the S20 Boxset if / when it gets announced.

Not only for completion reasons but i do genuinely like some of the stories. For me, all seasons have high’s and lows, this is no different and each to their own

I am very much looking forward to having 27 of these boxes on my shelf one day.

I would also hope that the range expands over time to include “NuWho” bringing the total as we stand to 40 boxsets depending how they are grouped.

I’m sure my wife will continue to sigh at me just replying “right” when I tell her of my joy at opening another Amazon parcel to find one of these beautifully packaged boxsets inside

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 27th, 2022 - 6:02pm

      Do all series have lows?

1 – Sensorites is a little bit boring but not terrible

      3 – Is pretty decent

5 – can’t think of any dodgy ones

6 – Krotons and Dominators get a little stick but I like them

      7 – Solid

      8 – Solid

      10 – Solid

      12-14 Solid

      16 – Solid

      19 – Solid (I like Time Flight)

      26 – Solid

    • D84

      July 27th, 2022 - 10:46pm

Apologies Bobby I meant that I guess there will always be someone who doesn’t like a story or 2 within a season. I’m with you on most of your “solid” notes – yes those seasons are generally great overall imo but I’m sure not everyone would agree.
Each to their own, I’m an invested fan – even though I discovered Who during the wilderness years when I was a kid, so I will buy it all regardless

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 28th, 2022 - 9:00am

That is the wonderful thing about Doctor Who it spans generations and has very distinctive eras which some love some don’t even now is the same.

Personally I can’t stand the Moffat years but love Jodie Whittaker and the Chibnall years and the abuse they get from some small corners on social media who are too offensive to be true Whovians is shameful

    • Gordon

      July 29th, 2022 - 7:42am

Season 20 still has quite a lot to offer despite my issues with it. From Peter running around Amsterdam with rice crispies on his face to Janet’s performance in snakedance with Martin clunes’s outfit to the brig popping up (even if it didn’t make much sense him being there) and nyssa’s leaving to the whole of enlightenment. Even if I question his appearance and yes prof Horner is right about it suiting the monk more Anthony ainley hamming it up in bodham castle is still kind of entertaining in a sort of so bad it’s good kind of way. Finally the five doctors has a ton of rewatchability. I’m still buying it. Not just because I’m buying them all but I know the new special features will make these sets worth getting.

Every season and story has its fans. For every person that hates terminus or season 20 there is always someone out there that think it’s brilliant. I’m not a huge fan of season 17 and it has 2 of my most disliked stories on it (pit/nimon) but I know there is a section of fans that adore those stories. On the other end of the scale I really like season 24. I find it a lot of fun despite the flaws (and there is many) but I also know there is a section of the fan base that absolutely detests everything to do with this season. It’s ok to like a season or story but it’s also ok to dislike it.

    • Gordon

      July 29th, 2022 - 8:29am

Been thinking of potential in conversations

Season 1: Carole Ann Ford/William Russell (if able)/Waris Husain
      Season 2: Maureen O Brian/Richard Martin
      Season 3: Peter Purvis
      Season 4: anneke wills/Michael troughton
      Season 5: Fraser Hines/David troughton
      Season 6: Wendy Padbury
      Season 7: Sean pertwee
      Season 8: Katy Manning*
      Season 9: Michael E Bryant
      Season 10: Katy Manning
      Season 11: Richard Franklyn
      Season 12: Tom Baker*
      Season 13: Sadie Miller
      Season 14: Philip Hinchcliffe*
      Season 15: Louise Jameson
      Season 16: John Leeson
      Season 17: Bob Baker*
      Season 18: none*
      Season 19: Peter Davison*
      Season 20: Janet Fielding/Sarah Sutton
      Season 21: Mark Strickson/Eric Sayward
      Season 22: Colin baker/Nicola Bryant/Michael grade*
      Season 23: Bonnie Langford*
      Season 24: Sylvester McCoy*
      Season 25: Andrew Cartmell
      Season 26: Sophie Aldred
      Wilderness: Paul mcgann/Eric roberts/Geoffrey sax/Philip segal/Richard E Grant (take your pick)

      *= already released

Didn’t put John Levine as I didn’t think he needed one. Living with Levine covers his life and career perfectly.

Included both the troughtons and Sadie miller as all 3 have worked on the show (big finish counts in my book) and the troughtons would also have good insight into their father and in sadie’s case mother. Sean would have a good insight into his father plus his own career is fascinating.

    • Auton

      July 29th, 2022 - 9:14am

All of those sound amazing, however I don’t think Sadie Miller, David or Michael Troughton will get one but hopefully they will be on behind the sofas or in an Patrick Troughton tribute. Sean Pertwee would be great to have an interview with but I don’t think it will be an in conversation just a normal interview like the one with Patricia Quinn or Deep Roy. William Russell would be amazing but he is 97 so idk if it will be possible. Paul Mcgann should definitely have one for Wilderness Years and perhaps Eric Roberts but all the others could be interviewed for a TV Movie Making of or just a normal interview.

    • Prof Horner

      July 29th, 2022 - 10:00am

Sadly I don’t think we will get an interview with Richard Franklin for season 11.he didn’t look in good shape at the time of his last birthday.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 29th, 2022 - 8:17pm

I love Living with Levene it’s one of the best ever documentarys

I could take an in conservation with John too there’s something fascinating about the man, he’s is like Tom Baker in the way I could listen to him all day

  • Timelord

    July 23rd, 2022 - 8:05pm

Sort of unrelated to this, But does anyone know if we’ll ever get series 9 & 10 steelbook released? Seems unlikely since it’s been over a year when series 8 was out.

Still no news on the next Blu ray box set. I am beginning to think we will be lucky to get even one more this year.
    Any thoughts?

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 18th, 2022 - 5:32pm

I’d be happy with just one more later in the year especially if it is series two, Christmas time would be nice

    • D84

      July 18th, 2022 - 10:47pm

Yea it’s all gone a little quiet, wonder what the hold up is. I do hope the range continues and completes – now that I am invested

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 19th, 2022 - 1:45pm

I think we have simply lost one release. 22 was suspected for March but came in June where as last year we had one in March, June and December so I think we’ll get one more late this year so too early for a trailer also if it is series two the 60s sets are much bigger, double the episode count and imagine much more tough to upscale

    • Daniel

      July 20th, 2022 - 9:21am

Someone on Twitter did a fanart cover of Season 21 and Lee Binding replied on it saying that it looked dangerously close to his draft on the Boxset. I have a strong feeling Season 21 might be coming soon seeing that There’s been only one 5th Doctor Boxset so far.

    • Prof Horner

      July 20th, 2022 - 1:30pm

Well let’s hope this the case. If one is coming out in October there is still a chance we may get another one for Christmas. I am still hoping for season 9 this year along with season 2.

      July 20th, 2022 - 2:18pm

As he’s going to be doing them all Lee’s probably made draft versions for all of them at this point. I’m not so certain we are getting a Davison set just yet and if we are it’s more likely season 20. Firstly they are waiting on mark Strickson being in the U.K. so they can film extras. He was supposed to be over just now for a convention but he pulled out and whether or not he made it over to the U.K. is unknown. If he has made it over it’s probably too soon for filming for the next one. Secondly they only have 3 80s sets left and they just had 1. If the next one is a Davison release it only leaves 2 80s sets for the second half of the range. 3. Some Extras have already been filmed for season 20. 4. It’s the 60th anniversary next year and having a box set out of season 20 that features the first 6 actors that played the doctor on it would be fitting.

I think it will either be season 2 or season 9 next. We are overdue a black and white season and with no more animations in the works after abominable it surely seems like the time is right to go ahead with one and with season 2 behind the sofa already recorded according to Maureen o Brian and Peter purvis it seems like the most likely candidate. Failing that I’m going for season 9. Out of the 3 remaining pertwee seasons 9 seems most obvious. 7 and 11 need more work and season 9 has at least some regulars still with us for extras. Don’t think we will be getting a Tom this year. Got to leave at least some of his seasons for the second half of the range

    • Auton

      July 20th, 2022 - 2:52pm

If Colin knows that one is being released in October then it must mean that he is on the behind the sofa for that season which is most likely season 2 or 9. I doubt it’s season 21 as they will probably want to save it for later due to it being the last season with Colin left to release. I agree with Gordon season 2 and 9 are highly likely and I’m rather excited for either of them being a huge Pertwee fan especially the sea devils and curse of Peladon and I do love the pure historicals of season 2 and the space museum is a hidden classic. I never got round to watching the commentary for fury from the deep, what did Michael Briant say which got everyone thinking they filmed stuff on the locations of The Sea Devils?

    • Prof Horner

      July 20th, 2022 - 3:42pm

As far as the extras for season 9 are concerned. I can see a Matthew Sweet interview with Michael Briant. Plus maybe a piece on either Louis Marks ,Brian Hayles or Robert Sloman.

    • Auton

      July 20th, 2022 - 4:17pm

All three of those writers would be interesting for a looking for. The in conversations are always amazing and now we know we can get more than one per set as seen with season 22, the possibilities for future interviews on many of the sets is going great.

    • Auton

      July 20th, 2022 - 4:19pm

And I am the doctor sung by Jon Pertwee will hopeful be on the season 9 set as well

    • Gordon

      July 20th, 2022 - 11:13pm

Michael E Bryant’s comment wasn’t actually about the sea devils. Michael said:

8:40 into episode 5 of the commentary for fury from the deep:

Michael E Bryant:I met her and her husband (June Murphy and Brian Cullingford) in er Margate a while ago when I was doing something for indeed this Blu-ray series.

Chris chapman clarified that It was referring to the making of for fury from the deep as that was filmed near Margate (which is about 100 miles from any of the sea devils locations) and was filmed quite a while before the commentary was recorded.

      As for season 9 extras:

      location location location season 9
More substantial making of for the time monster
      Looking for Louis marks
Race against time with new voice over (replacing Noel Clarke)
      Sea devils omnibus
      Sea devils in 5.1
New effects on the mutants (would like the bird from time monster as well but mutants would probably benefit more from new effects than time monster)

    • Auton

      July 21st, 2022 - 7:38am

Thank you for clarifying Gordon, all those possible season 9 extras would be amazing. What do you think there going to do with the making of for curse of peladon, as its in two parts and both parts are making ofs for both peladon stories are they going to duplicate and put both parts on both stories or part one on curse and part 2 on monster of peladon

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 21st, 2022 - 7:23pm

Will they be removing Noel Clarke from series 1, 2 and 4 as well?

    • Richard

      July 21st, 2022 - 9:18pm

I feel I have outgrown New Who now, but I still love all the classics.

    • Gordon

      July 21st, 2022 - 10:13pm

Obviously they would still keep Noel’s performance as Micky. It’s part of the show. You can’t get around that. I just don’t think it’s a good look still having him narrate (as himself) a documentary celebrating poc in the show when he has had allocations abuse and bullying of 26 women (a number of which are said to be of poc) regardless of his guilt or innocence. Considering how far things have changed since 2011I feel it could be done with a bit of an update and having the likes of Sasha dahwan or Mandip Gill narrating it could be the way to go

    • Bobby Fackrell

      July 22nd, 2022 - 2:23pm

Mandip gets my vote I loves her

No one knows all the facts but between Clarke, Barrowman and Eccleston’s unhappiness with the production team it is obvious there was a lot of unprofessionalism going on it the time, I’m very uncomfortable with Russel T Davies returning as this all happened under his watch

  • Bushboy

    July 17th, 2022 - 11:11pm

Does anybody know the release date for the Australian set? JB Hi Fi had it listed for September release but now it has reverted back to “Coming Soon”.

      July 18th, 2022 - 2:39am

I gave up and have ordered the UK set from Zavvi.

    • RPG74

      July 18th, 2022 - 10:31am

I initially decided to wait and purchase the standard version of this release, but for the last couple of weeks I’ve been wavering, wondering if I should pull the trigger now for the Limited. Well, given the problems highlighted here I’ll stick with my original plan. So thanks. However, if the problems described haven’t been corrected in time for the Standard version then I shan’t bother purchasing 22 at all. This sort of thing is unacceptable really and I don’t think it’s up to fans to simply tolerate it.

    • RPG74

      July 18th, 2022 - 10:51am

Lol, the above comment was meant for Ian Cotterill, below, regarding mastering problems on the discs. You get the idea.

    • Rex Farrel

      July 19th, 2022 - 6:36am

RPG74: In all fairness, most people probably won’t notice or realise the glitches and gaffs (clearly they made it past the remastering team and BBC…). So you might be completely satisfied with it, as a lot of people are. I accept that I’m a nerd with a keen eye, so just more likely to spot these totally avoidable things. (A defeatist attitude, I know, but experience has taught me that such is life…)

  • Ian Cotterill

    July 16th, 2022 - 12:48pm

I just finished watching ‘Revelation of the Daleks’ and I could not help but notice a few remastering errors on the blu-ray.

For example, the cliffhanger recap has one shot over running, causing the next to last just half-a-second.
Also the updated cgi effect for Orcini’s explosive death is absent, leaving just the original effect, and there’s a white line running the top of the screen during the updated ‘flying Dalek’ scene. You also can’t get the cgi effects for the extended episode 1.
Plus, the 5.1 surround sound is slightly different from the dvd, with a couple of slightly abrupt music cuts.

All these weren’t enough to impede my enjoyment of the disc, but they’re enough to convince me that it’s worth keeping hold of the original DVD.

    • Rex Farrel

      July 17th, 2022 - 11:51pm

Revelation has quite a few gaffs, beyond the ones you mention (I’ll add your spots to the list, as I’d not got to those yet in my quick check). They were clearly rushing to get everything finished for release, when they really needed another couple of weeks. Or better QC people.

    • Ian Cotterill

      July 18th, 2022 - 9:41am

      What other errors were there?

    • Rex Farrel

      July 19th, 2022 - 1:00am

They’re mostly scaling, interlacing and noise reduction errors. Someone did things on auto without manual tweaking.

    • Ian Cotterill

      July 20th, 2022 - 10:04pm

I tried emailing the BBC DVD support about this, but have yet to get a reply.

    • the Ergon

      July 21st, 2022 - 12:38am

Someone should to respond to this. Ignoring the vocal minority go away doesn,t bode well for future releases if there slapdash attitude is just to get them out without due care and attention. I,m getting season 12 vibes again here. I,m hoping these errors are fixed by the time the standard Issue comes out, though unlikely. I should definitely keep on at them if you are less than satisfied.

    • Rex Farrel

      July 21st, 2022 - 4:38am

It would be nice if they addressed the problems, but I’m not hopeful now. What they can do is be more careful on future sets – get someone to watch the things when there’s still time to do something. I know many are looking forward to the b/w sets, but the increase in the number of episodes concerns me.

On Season 22, Timelash probably has the most glitches. The upscaling and noise reduction has damaged the original video effects, and shots with the new effects are at the wrong resolution (704 vs 720 pixels issues I think, for those of a nerdy disposition). You’ll notice horizontal picture size changing, and because the cut to the alternative shot isn’t always frame accurate you may spot the adjustment taking place early. This is easily fixable and avoidable, even if the people who did the CG got their figures wrong. But no one bothered – perhaps because it’s Timelash?

Thanks Ian for contacting BBC DVD though – they should know that people are noticing these things. I kind of gave up, but may send a note pointing out the signs of a rush job being evident. I’m actually embarrassed by some of the things I notice, because they’re so minor it makes me feel like a plonker for apparently spotting them when no one working on the sets did (or cared enough to do something). And it’s not like I’m even looking for them, to me they just stand out. I watched a Man in a Suitcase episode on Blu-ray today, never seen it before, but still spotted a little two frame attempted CGI fix (not something I was expecting, but I still noticed). It’s a curse, I tell thee!

    • the Ergon

      July 21st, 2022 - 9:50am

I want the best sets possible, that is the point of these after all. This does not sound like the best.

  • Erato

    July 10th, 2022 - 6:40pm

Anyone know why they didn’t do an extended part one of ‘The Mark of the Rani’ given that they offer the time coded deleted scenes as an extra?

    • Auton

      July 10th, 2022 - 7:59pm

If you watch the deleted scenes, most of them are minor cuts to the opening and closing of scenes that made it in the show so they wouldn’t add much. Compared to the deleted scenes of Vengeance which has quite a few scenes which are full cut out scenes

I ordered my UK set from Zavvi, but I’m down in NZ so didn’t get it till now. It came without any damage but has a fairly glaring manufacturing error. The edge of the back cover bleeds onto the spine so that there is a strip of blue. When lined up with the other sets it interrupts the uniform grey of the shelf.

Since Zavvi still has 22 in stock, is this something I could ask for a replacement for? It is minor but sticks out like a sore thumb on the shelf.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

    • booboo

      July 10th, 2022 - 10:16am

Technically if a manufacturing error then its “faulty” so yes worth a try, some retailers will say it doesn’t effect the “performance” so will try and avoid.

I’m also in New Zealand and have considered using Zavvi as I would like to swap over to collecting the standard edition sets due to the annoying change in packaging after the first few sets. However I have heard a lot of complaints about them which has so far put me off. Please can you tell me if you have used them regularly and what your experience of them has been like?
Also if anyone knows of anyone else who will ship the standard sets to New Zealand I would be grateful to know.

    • SilentNinjaZero

      July 11th, 2022 - 3:49am

@Bushboy I got the first few UK sets from Amazon UK but they stopped shipping to NZ around the time 26 came out. Since then I’ve got the sets from Zavvi. I personally haven’t had any problems with them but have heard others complain. They ship the Collection sets in a wrap around cardboard box, all my sets from them have been pristine with no damage. I’ve also bought a few other things from them. I bought a Marvel blu-ray once and it never arrived, customer service quickly provided me with a replacement. Zavvi’s shipping in my case has been fairly quick too.

There don’t seem to be any other official retailers that sell them for standard price and ship to NZ. JB Hi-Fi and Amazon US/ AU have other versions ofc but not the UK type.

You can resort to ebay or trade me to get them, but it’s hard to find good options. There was a copy of 17 a while back on trade me that was normal price, but that’s the only time I’ve seen a normal price UK version there. Maybe someone else knows of other options? I think places like Galaxy 4 and the Who Shop have them too but they are marked up and shipping is expensive.

You can try Zavvi but it seems there is always some risk buying from them considering other people’s experiences. I may eventually have a bad experience but so far they have worked out for me.

That’s great. Thanks for your help.

    • Ben

      August 4th, 2022 - 10:53pm

@Bushboy: It looks like Zavvi AU doesn’t have all of the standard edition sets, but I think you can get the rest from Amazon AU which ships cheaply to NZ. Even if you just get 12 (Zavvi for $77NZD + shipping) and 19 (Amazon AU marketplace, $88NZD including shipping), as they’re the problematic ones and the standard blu ray cases are different enough to not seem like a production error on the shelf. I’ve used Zavvi before and haven’t had any problems with them.

Also, if you end up getting the standard edition sets, I started collecting the Australian releases quite late and because they’re harder to find, I’m still missing seasons 14, 18, and 19. [I live in NZ too, and I’m a student so I wouldn’t be able to buy them all at once. Buying overseas means you have to pay about $50 in shipping and import fees, so even if you put it for market price on trademe and flicked me a message that’d be appreciated]. My friend also collects them, so if you want to sell any of the others just message me / reply to this comment.

    • Ben

Today, Colin did a talk at the London Film and Comic Con and he mentioned that he was recording commentary for a Peter Davison Blu-Ray boxset.

    • Auton

      July 9th, 2022 - 6:29pm

Most likely for season 21 rather than season 20 as there is already a commentary for Arc of Infinity with Colin in so more likely a second commentary for The Twin Dilemma, either though he was in that commentary as well. I still think that the next Peter Davison set is Season 20

    July 5th, 2022 - 7:37am

I’ve seen a few signs of this release being rushed, several silly and easily fixed/avoided mistakes and glitches. Before I do a list (Who fans love lists), is anyone else seeing (de)interlacing errors on red video effects? Timelash and Revelation in particular – pause the picture and advance through on the shot of Davros hovering and see if there’s combing (original and CGI versions). It’s not the worst example, but it’s the one I’ve tested most and everything is pointing to it being burnt in to some degree because I can’t get rid of it all (if I’m right, it’s a lack of manual tweaking after processing, indicating a rush job – like when people used to encode dvds at a fixed bitrate and to hell with the bursts of blocking). It doesn’t affect every field of the effect, just some – and is visible on normal viewing, which is why I initially thought it was player or TV related.

    • Mark

      July 5th, 2022 - 4:19pm

I’m not overly knowledge on the visual effects work on Classic-Who, but I’m certain that on many of the dvd releases, having watched them all 2 years ago, you would definitely get static interlaced lines – both horizontally and vertically, and some of the very early dvd releases (The Two Doctors, Remembrance of the Daleks) were either very blurry/grainy, or frame ghost-y when it came to visual effects. Looking at the Blu Ray of S22, the image is much crisper, and it’s exposed very fine vertical lines, notably the very first Tardis scene with The Second Doctor and Jamie.

In Classic Who, you also get what I guess is Dv-tape sensitivity to loud noises – my top example is Nyder’s men firing machine guns at The Fourth Doctor and Harry in Genesis of the Daleks – these huge horizontal rainbow lines sortof spray all over the screen, and vibrate to the rapid shots, and kinda float there on the screen for a while.

Even with Attack of the Cybermen about a decade after Genesis, all the underground worker’s torches leave shapes in the air as they move – not technically interlacing, but still artefacts due to the nature of the dv-tape cameras.

My guess with what you’re describing, could be that the Blu Ray is exposing those lines for the first time, since it was never intended for HD 1080p broadcast (I think it was for 576 lines) wheras the DVD was about… 2005? On top of that dvd image is very compressed, and could’ve been neatly concealing any fine artefacts such as additional lines. So I think it is possible that further seasons could potentially show up more artefacts due to clarity.

    • Rex Farrel

      July 5th, 2022 - 6:53pm

Mark: I’d never complain about the analogue artefacts, which I expect to see (and quite like – the microphony and multi-gen ringing you mention are as much a part of Who as the Daleks to me!). These are horizontal HD scanlines, i.e. 1080 res, too fine for original 576 (yep, you’re spot on there). It feels as if they needed another couple of weeks max to make little further tweaks to the discs.

Glad it’s not just me Ray – ordered from Zavvi because they had season 17 in stock. Bought that and 22 and the disc tray was dislodged for 17 and 22 was badly battered in one corner to the point it’s torn the box! Only bought from Zavvi as the price was discounted but never again.

I get mine from Amazon these days (oh how I miss Zoom).

I got mine with a slight bulge on the front cover, not from the delivery but a production issue when cardboard was glued in place. As these are limited edition I requested a replacement which came back perfect.

Amazon’s return/replace process is very easy with a few clicks in the App. Replacement comes within 24 hours too.

The days of these selling out are long gone which makes it less stressful although I imagine high demand for Season 13 when it eventually comes and maybe some of the 60’s sets.

  • Timelord 1944

    July 4th, 2022 - 3:22am

Its a shame that the producers of these disc were unable to source the original location film for The Two Doctors. Perhaps they couldn’t come to an agreement with the private collector who owns it. Don’t suppose we’ll ever see this story in its best form now.

    • Mark

      July 4th, 2022 - 9:40am

I keep reading this online also.

Without full context of the conversations, looking at the situation as a fan, yes there was an opportunity to scan the film and allow the fans a digital copy within this box set, and that’s on the collector for deciding not to do that, not the restoration team or the beautiful work put into this season.

The footage already exists as is shown in ‘The Two Doctors’ be it at a lower resolution, however I think Season 22’s Collection does a decent job on image quality, especially when compared with the rest of the classic era.

So I don’t think it’s any loss on the restoration work on this box set, it’s only on the collector for deciding not to share the film. For the sake of preserving, I would personally get the film professionally rescanned asap.. because film fades, I mean why wouldn’t you.

    • Timelord 1944

Patrick Troughton is the best Doctor, Robert Holmes is the best writer but you can’t polish a turd

Been very lucky with this Collection set. It had been thrown over the back garden 6 foot wall onto the patio. It was (unusually) only in a large padded envelope.
So if it wasn’t damaged in the fall I wondered if it had rained at all and damaged the pack.
    Luckily it was perfect.

Bloody hell, nice work by hour delivery driver/postman!

Good grief! Amazing it wasn’t damaged Coleman but pleased for you it’s intact. I’m really lucky with my postie!

Hope you enjoy the set. Just watched ‘Timelash’ which even the new effects could not begin to save although at least the tinsel is now obscured!

The interview with Nicola Bryant is an absolute highlight however. So open and honest. Her memories of Dursley McLinden are incredibly moving. It somehow makes the whole period even worse considering how appallingly she was treated. In Richard Marson’s book Nicola relates an incident with Nathan-Turner that is the single most horrible thing I’ve ever heard about to do with ‘Who’. Her strength is so apparent in the interview with Matthew Sweet and it is to her enormous credit she still is so positive about the show.

On wow, glad your set is ok Coleman.

I have always got my sets from Amazon and they all know to leave my parcels in the shed safe and sound if I’m not in.

Mine too was in a slightly padded envelope this time – not the usual wrap box, thankfully perfect condition so happy days.

      Bring on the next set!!

Thanks Guys. Yes when I saw the padded envelope I feared the worst, I’m glad it hasn’t been raining recently either. Usually comes from Amazon in a strong cardboard box like D84 mentioned.
Should imagine it’s cost cutting measures.

Lucky you, my season 22 set came all crushed up down the right hand side with discs all in bits and pieces and 5mm hole in the middle of the back cover, it arrived with no cellophane or j card. In an undamaged but very tight cardboard box, no protection or bubble warp, and the retailer needs proof of purchase. But had no handling work sheet or reciept. I must send the item back at my own cost.
Last time I’m ordering from zavvi, will use Amazon from now on.

You should get a refund on post when you return a damaged item.

did you not get a confirmation email of order even as a guest?

Bank /credit card statement as proof of purchase ?

      July 7th, 2022 - 1:29pm

Thanks for the reply booboo , but I spent 2 weeks chasing up this so called preorder, which was done on the day of announcement, not only was the item delayed by over 2 weeks now, they want proof of purchase, for the refund.
Which to me sounds daft if the item was preorderd in the first place, surely they must know or have a track records. As to email notifications, not every order taken from zavvi, but every order from hmv or Amazon. My replacement has now arrived from hmv, which was a very good quick turn around. I’m never using zavvi for preorders again. And looking at hmv’s quality of service, the item is still in its cellophane, and has its j card, and not a scratch or mark anywhere, together with the worksheet and reciept. How zavvi refunds me will be when I visited my bank I’m affraid.
I’ve been trying all morning to sort this out.

Mark M, If you ordered through Zavvi, you should have a email receipt as the proof of purchase, as well as an email to tell you when said item was dispatched so if you find them send them to Zavvi, you should get an answer back… they do have records but unless your the only person who orders off of their website, they need the order code… sometimes I found the receipt was in my junk folder, no real reason why, just got sent their as spam for some reason…

    • Mark N

      July 8th, 2022 - 12:22pm

Thanks to MIKK89 , but unfortunately zavvi did not accept my order return as it arrived ‘opened’ they offered me a £5 money back offer for my next order. The bank got me my £52 back. The email response was never sent, when it should have, and is nowhere in spam or where ever. I should point out that I had to wait far longer than necessary for this order, many others I know had theirs over 2 weeks before me. That’s the whole idea of preordering. So you get it on or around day of release, but offering me £5 off after being charged£52. No thanks.
I often use Amazon and regularly use hmv, these two between them are upfront, having to force money back of someone tells me their not worth it. And I’ve got to say it but I miss zoom as I used them alot also. But because of the sale rights issues they can no longer sell BBC titles.

Zoom has shut down, it was never going to work, total waste of a good company.

Well got my replacement 22 off hmv, so can sit back and enjoy! Zavvi only offer a 5 pound gift voucher, no refund.
So im not using them again. Cost me over £47.50 extra.
I can leave this for barclays to sort out. But reading others on here with similar issues. I too never get sent email notifications nor receipts, the box they use is too small. My hmv order arrived in a box roughly 10 cm larger all round, with bubble wrap foam. And im delighted that hmv are offering me £5 off my next collection boxset with them.

To Mark N, That’s unusual, I rarely use Zavvi to get the Limited Edition versions (tend to get the Standard Versions) but to hear the lack of care they have put into these is disgusting as it wouldn’t be too difficult. I have a few items for pre-order with them over the next few months…

    • Mark N

      July 8th, 2022 - 6:40pm

MIKK89 i have my fingers crossed for you, and hope they do well with you. But if the hat fits keep it, as i say, i never usually have abad thing to say about anyone, but 6 hours to sort out what order was, and on top of that it was over 2 weeks late. Zavvi makes no mention about email replys unless yo state it to them. Etc. Interesting that i hear that zavvi are looking to close its daventry site and move out.
But i take rumours with a pinch of salt until proven. Anyway ive got my boxset now at last, got a good weekends worth, ive already been looking at some of it.
Season 22 is not my top one, but its worth the buy in order to have a complete collection. Season 13 will be good when thats issued.

    • Mark Needles

      July 15th, 2022 - 8:48pm

Ive watched almost all of 22, not my most watched of the seasons, will definitely get 13 when available. I read with interest that in New Zealand Amazon.Com don,t supply the boxsets out there. Which seems very odd, considering I can buy anything who related, in New Zealand or Australia.
Mind you , the seven day wait is panic enough.

Although this is by far my least favourite series of ‘Who’, this is still a fantastic set and well worth having! So much to enjoy on the extras.

The new interview with Colin Baker is lovely and often very moving. So good to hear his experience on the show in the context of his wider career and his life. Matthew Sweet is a wonderful interviewer. Equally the interview with Michael Grade is really interesting, and it is hard not to disagree with some of his views on the series as it was at the time. Having said that, the way the cancellation was handled was disingenuous and unprofessional to say the least.

At the time, I enjoyed the dark humour and quite contemporaneous themes of ‘Vengeance on Varos’ and ‘Revelation of the Daleks’, but the overall series felt more and more self-indulgent and frequently gratuitously nasty and I didn’t enjoy the rather theatrical persona of the Sixth Doctor so much. The behind the scenes ructions are almost more compelling than the series itself!

      June 24th, 2022 - 8:43am

Your right i agreed with a lot of points Grade made, he’s still a slimy toad not unlike Sil, but how was dr Who going to compete with the likes of Star wars on the ever decreasing meagre budget they were given. I think they did rather well considering.

    • Doug Who

      June 24th, 2022 - 10:16am

For the 60s and 70s, I think ‘Who’ did very well often leading the field with a lot of visual effects with no time and a meagre budget. For example ‘The Invisible Enemy’ did some fantastic model work that looked just as good as many film effects. One of the issues was inconsistency, the same story’s Nucleus being an obvious example! Perhaps also the problem was that by the time the 80s rolled around, ‘Who’ began to lag behind as the technology and budgets exponentially increased so the difference between genre film and tv widened.

Anyway, unlike ‘Star Wars’ and its ilk, ‘Who’ generally had infinitely more imagination and originality (and wit). Television, in my opinion is quite a different medium to film anyway (perhaps less so these days unfortunately) and it has become boring that everything needs to look like an American ‘blockbuster’ to be of worth!

I agree with you, Philip that often, they did incredibly well considering the resources they were given. It was the scripts that were the main problem and responsible for those were the script editor and producer.

I preferred it to Trial of a Timelord. The Theatrical Doctor is exactly the problem for me.

Do the extended edits have the option of 5.1 surround sound?

    • Auton

      June 24th, 2022 - 4:58pm

No they don’t, I haven’t check revelation or two doctors but vengeance of varos extended version doesn’t have 5.1 however the normal broadcast version does plus a 5.1 version of the isolated soundtrack for vengeance
