    In regards to Season 3 as discussed below;

I think the priority should be to get the ‘Collection’ range done as efficiently and smoothly as possible. No to specially making animations within the range, but yes to getting all existing film reels, digital sd masters, telesnaps and archival photos scanned up to hd asap. That’s what I’d consider to be the real deal with Classic Who, and what The Collection range should represent.

As someone said below, a future per-Doctor range, using all the disc contents from when The Collection is completed would be the best way to go to keep all of this quality work selling and making money in years to come.

Animation projects should be their own separate entities, on their own budget and turnaround time, unaffected and non-stressed by The Collection deadlines. If one gets included with The Collection range by timing coincidence, great, otherwise any new animations really should be sold seperate.

The ultimate priority is to get as much surviving material of actual Classic Doctor Who onto modern physical home media as is possible. Were Season 3 to press on with photo recons / telesnaps, personally I’d be fine with that. Best possible audio, subtitles, clear as possible 1080p hd scanned visuals. No purist can complain at having access to that, in my view.

21 out of the 4 episdoes are missing from s3. I dont think many people will fork out the cost that these sets are {around 40£} for a set that is half missing.

1 story per set they can get away with.
So s1 has 7eps of Marco Polo
S5 has 4 eps of wheel in space
S6 has 5 eps of Space Pirates
All have the audios to fall back on that can be included to replace the comply missing visuals. Not mentioned AUC as this can still be released with the set no problems.

S4 has 8 eps currently across 2 stories Smugglers and Highlanders. Depending if smugglers gets/is being animated in secret. If not highlanders has been mentioned it could be done if they stick to 1 tartan instead of multiple versions. Also be good to have as its Jamie’s 1st appearance.

Does anyone knoe how much the animations cost on average? Would they ever consider doing a crowd fund for a release of 1?

The true cost of the animations is a closely guarded secret (goodness knows why), but I’ve always thought that although they are expensive to produce, they are probably not as expensive as you would think.

They do turn a profit after all and for something as niche as a Doctor Who Missing Episode animation, that can only be good news!

It probably just needs a second pressing, which takes longer than it used to (especially nearer Xmas), and they might be waiting until “that episode” has the new voice over recorded for the newsreader.

That’s an interesting question. Gordon would know better, but one assumes that they wouldn’t re-release this set to accommodate the inclusion of a animated steel book/DVD release of Crusade. But more to the point, will collection sets include animated versions of stories anyway? Aside from practical time constraints for some sets perhaps preventing this, what about rights issues? Yes, it’s all BBC material, but could the separate animated and collection teams have different contracts/rights issues that could prevent animateds from being included in the boxsets? We’ve all assumed that they would be, where possible, but I don’t think that we know for certain.
      Anyone?

      October 22nd, 2024 - 9:13am

Some has said before – likely Gordon, that the team involved in making these sets have said that they will include an animation representation of a particular story – where one exists – where possible.

And i would say that intention is absolutely there as the animated trailer for Galaxy 4 (S3) – is included on the S2 Collection

Most acknowledge it is unlikely for there to ever be a Collection Set exclusive Animated story as the budget does stretch anywhere near that far, but it seems viable and likely the Animations that have been out a while and well past their exclusive solo selling period (DVD / BluRay / Steelbook) will get included in S3 – S6.

S1 is anybody’s guess due to all the noise around AUC – but some have said the distribution rights are secure and will allow it to be included and released when S1 hits our shelves

I wouldn’t hold your breath for The Crusade getting animated anytime soon (if ever). Besides, even if it does get animated I find it unlikely this S2 boxset would magically include it in future reissues; that would involve reprinting of booklets and artwork, reauthoring of menus etc. if it ever does come out separately, slot the disc in the S2 boxset. 🙂

And I don’t see why animations already kicking about before their relevant boxsets are released (e.g. Galaxy 4, Evil of the Daleks etc) wouldn’t be included when the season set is released. The animations are on iPlayer, after all… [Only one I’d have a ? over is the original version (plus corresponding colourised version) of “Power of the Daleks”, as the colour version wasn’t done or really endorsed by the animation team, and as far as they are concerned the SE version replaces the rather hasty 2016 original].

Honestly this S2 Collection is a superb boxset and the episodes look and sound stunning (big improvement on the DVDS), plus The Crusade has a superb recon (and restoration of what exists, especially episode 1). I’d say focus on what’s there as opposed to passing over one thing that may or may not be coming along much, much further down the line (if at all), but each to their own.

Can Lilley see once The Collection has been completed and the rest of the missing stories have been animated a Ultimate Complete Collection range of sets being done for 1-6. All of the current run of 1-6 are likely to have 1 story short of being complete.
      S1 Marco Polo
      S2 The Crusade
S3 Myth Makers OR The Massacre OR The Savages
      S4 The Highlanders
      S5 Wheel in Space
      S6 Space Pirates
As I say they will all be animated in the end and then release them within a final season box set a fair few years down the line due to time/work on the animations and then time period elapse for solo release before onto a box set. With colour eps aswell as b&w and if the colourization stories included as can see them doing at least 1 from each
Then maybe after that doing Doctor Sets. 1 box set for each Doctor woth each season housed within. Like done for s1-4/specials of New Who earlier in the year. But use the standard box sets style housed within a hard cardboard box. Like they did with dvd box sets before (key to time, bred for war, beginning etc etc).

You’d be a bit peeved off if you brought the set and they just re-released it after to include the eps missing. Have to be something special

      October 22nd, 2024 - 1:12pm

James master plan will not be getting animated anytime soon, if at all. Even if it is done it will likely be the last of the animations done.

    • James

      October 22nd, 2024 - 3:10pm

Amypondfan Out of the 4 stories left In s3 dmp is a. A dalek story, b. A mega 12 parter and c. A bulk of s3 (technically 3 stories worth). The other 3 are 4 parts but no episodes currently exist in the hands of the bbc so be a start from scratch animation story, whereas dmp has 3/12 to work with. S3 will be the last or penultimate set to be released due to the amount of work (either a Tom or s1 to finish possibly). Out of the hartnell run can see massacre or myth being the ones left out so I can be released as they are historical (s1 marco polo, s2 crusade both historicals).

After s4 smugglers has been officially confirmed and released, all efforts and focus will be in s3 animations. Dmp is a key selling point due to the points above. So that would be worked on in the background whilst other team works on the other 3 stories.

Not spoken about mission as can see a deal being made between bbc studios and Uniclan to their version used as commercially sold. Either royalties per set sold, one off payment to buy own the rights to it, or sell as a single dvd release and go halves on profits before adding to s3 set.

OR go in works with them to remake DMP as it is a prequel to the adventure. Continue the story and see a live action version instead of aniamtion. Using the same skills and equipment. Possibly get Disney+ involved to distribute for the 12 week limited run worldwide, air on BBC4 in the UK. Then a solo release after its airing. Then add to S3 the following year. That would reduce the wait like the animation releases have of 2 years apparently before they can be used for other release, have more ratings for views, money come in for the solo release and the Collection release. Yes a. Be a lot of money to do and b. A pipedream
      Then a solo release

Masterplan is too expensive to make. It doesn’t matter that it’s a dalek story. It has a huge amount of characters and locations. It will take a long time and a lot of money. It’s more likely that the 4 part stories would be done with masterplan missed out. A remake is out of the question as well. Again the budget would be out of the reach of those making it. Its essentially the equivalent of three motion pictures.

    • James

      October 23rd, 2024 - 11:35am

Miss rules.. looking into things dmp cost 31ķ at the time equivalent to 750ķ now. The bbc shelled out 1 million per series after series 1 which consisted of average 8 episodes so 8 hours. So wouldn’t be as much for 5 hours of content ( 3.75 if only for 9 missing eps) to do. As said be a dream to have it happen. If Disney were to get involved to be easier more as they paid 10 million per epsiode for season 1.

      October 23rd, 2024 - 11:17pm

I’m not sure what is happening with the animations and I have heard no gossip, as I do not know anyone who works on them. Some big gaps between them

      Underwater Menace – 13th November 2023
      Celestial Toymaker – 10th June 2024

    • Gordon

      October 24th, 2024 - 2:06am

Crusade has an insane workload in terms of sets characters costumes etc even if they just did the 2 remaining episodes it’s still the hardest 4 parter of the lot. if it was ever done it will be one of the last ones. If it’s ever done it’s probably a good decade away from being a reality. By then these collection releases will be a decade old. Considering how few people are around for 2 now and the total will shrink it will be a straight repackaging rather than new content made for it a few years after the animation to fit any new content that has been produced in the gap between the season 2 release and the crusade animated release.

I do want to point out there is zero guarantees that they will all be done. We all want them done but they are commissioned on a case basis.

Seeing as a Disney involved masterplan has been mentioned yet again I’ll mention it yet again Disney has zero I repeat zero interest in anything classic who or even pre 2023 who. Masterplan is a massive 7 figure ask in either live action or animation. A live action recreation would need the sort of budget that is only really reserved for Christmas Day prime time telly. Considering it’s a most likely to end up a bbc 4 broadcast like daleks in colour I doubt the budget of that size would be justified. You can compare it to poldark all you want but poldark was a prestigious Sunday night drama that had mass appeal and was extraordinarily successful. A recreated masterplan broadcast on bbc 4simply doesn’t have that.

The animations will happen at their own speed. They will return just not as frequently as they were under the bbc America funded days. We are reaching the end of the line of the easy ones.

    • Bookcollector

      October 24th, 2024 - 4:22am

Much as I would love to see all of the remaining missing stories animated I really don’t think we will get them all. I think we may have at least three incomplete seasons.
Season one – Marco polo (hugely expensive)
Season two – crusade (for what needs done still very expensive)
Season three – masterplan (for all the reasons above)

Mission to the unknown is an odd one. I doubt if they would release it has a single disc story without masterplan. Yes, you could fill a disc. Uclan colour and b&w, animation, reconstruction and some extras but I’m not sure if it would sell. I’d buy it… but the general public?

The three remaining troughton stories will hopefully be done. Highlanders might be possible if they use the toymaker style animation and perhaps sacrifice the tartan for a simpler pattern to make it easier to do. Wheel is one that should be possible in either style and I think pirates would work as a toymaker style animation. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that anymore stories will be done. I hope we get some more but I do genuinely think there will always be gaps.

      October 24th, 2024 - 11:15am

I get disney has no current and possible future involvement but the question could be asked.
If bbc America were involved and it was broadcast on regular American TV something like this being exclusive worldwide to Disney not be a plus for them?more subscribers and audience no?

As I said be a dream if they did it.

      Gordon

Is smugglers not being currently worked on? Was linked with underwater menace last year. Not heard anything?

What’s your thoughts on the bbc doing ai for them in the future picking up Ians work?

Would they consider using Uniclan version for the collection release? 1 less to animate and fills a gap easy.

    • Gordon

      October 24th, 2024 - 12:10pm

BBC America have pretty much stopped producing anything new or original since 2022. Disney are just a paying distributor. Sure they probably give rtd suggestions but at the end of the day they aren’t really involved in the commissioning of projects.

Don’t know if smugglers is in the works or not. I know they filmed a weekend with anneke a few years back which probably fits best on either there or season 4 but we shall see. Ian Levine says it’s one he’s already “regenerated”. he knows it’s not smugglers but won’t say which one. It could be that they just told him so that they get peace to get on with things. I’m guessing it’s either savages or the myth makers if it isn’t smugglers.

As for Ian’s ai versions it will never happen and it’s nothing to do with the bbc supposedly hating him as he claims. There is a ton of legal and ethical issues with ai that Ian didn’t bother sorting which means the bbc will never touch those with a hundred foot barge even if they wanted to use them and that’s before you got into getting everything to a level that would pass quality control for a physical dvd release. Fine as a fan project on YouTube. Non starter for a physical release for at least 5-6 various reasons.

As far as I know there is zero reason why they can’t use uclan’s on a season 3 set. All the legal clearances and everything is good to go

    • SV7

      October 24th, 2024 - 12:20pm

I’m starting to think that Nicola Methven somehow got confused with the colourised surviving clips of The Smugglers shown at the BFI last year.

If you want my personal, completely unfounded opinion I think the animations are being rested again, or are going to come out so slowly they might as well be rested between each release. I’ve no proof to back that up, but everything has gone so quiet. It’s deafening.

    • Rob W

      October 24th, 2024 - 12:21pm

Disney or a profit making business listed on the American stock market. They are not interested in subsidising classic who it will not make any money. The animations, obviously still enough to keep going, however, the longer the story the more expensive the project. It could be that we don’t see Marco Polo, space Pirates, the wheel in space and Daleks MP ever animated. Unless the next animation is a long one, and that’s why it’s taking a while for an announcement or even a trailer.
The BBC and the team can’t really win with funds. If they released an announcement early and then it’s delayed we will get annoyed, so don’t say anything about what’s happening we get annoyed as well.
