July 20th, 2025 - 12:11pmI’m new to these Collection Box sets. I used to collect the VHS tapes in the 90’s but never got into collecting the DVD’s.
How lucky are we to have all of these extras! I’ve not heard any of these commentarys before, let alone the production subtitles and making of, Behind the settee and even the PDF docs.
Just got Season 12 so far, the first thing I watched was the Robot commentary with Tom Baker complaining that his nose looked the same size as Pertwee’s in the regeneration scene!
I could only have dreamt of this content in the 1990’s!

July 17th, 2025 - 9:37pmI have said it’s my least favourite story of the season but…
On re-watching the opening sequence it is very powerful & well performed.
Through out the story their are some great moments & lines of dialogue by Tom.
The androids do remind me of the six million dollar man/ bionic woman episodes with the Fembots!

July 18th, 2025 - 5:46pmOn paper, the setup of A.A is a perfect Doctor Who story.
Unfortunately for me it was one of Tom Baker’s dud stories. Pace severely lacking, uninspiring aliens – it’s another run of the mill Baker story where Baker himself and Elizabeth Sladen feel like the only relevant pieces of the entire thing because of how well they do what they do as actors – but everything around them is just so dull.
I think it’s often too easy to go into 90% of the Tom Baker era with rose tinted glasses. Likewise the Troughton and Pertwee eras also had their own burnt out stories (The Wheel in Space, Planet of the Daleks) Yet Tom Baker’s Season 18 is depicted amongst the fandom as when things started to go wrong, but actually I think it started to recognize vital storytelling elements like pacing, atmosphere and energy – while a huge chunk of the late 60’s and 70’s had so many stories of ‘nah that’ll be fine’ – and then some of the genuinely top tier gold standard written / produced stories like ‘The Ambassadors of Death’, I find, are really often overlooked in favor of more ‘iconic’ stories, character setups, villains etc.
Bookcollector
July 19th, 2025 - 2:06pmBabelbro I think there is a huge amount of rose-tinted glasses concerning all of classic who and in fact the original Davies run. Now I say this as a huge fan of the classic era and a supporter of new who. Although Davies’ return has stretched my enthusiasm somewhat… but classic who in every era has issues. Most stories do but we ignore that and just enjoy them. Senator instance. A question about pyramids of Mars, one of my favourite Tom stories. When Sutekh is freed from his paralysis, why do he enter the corridor? Why not just leave the tomb and walk out into the Egyptian desert and therefore win? Oh in seeds why is the painting in the boot? Judging by the dialogue he has owned it some time so why is it there? The answer is course is to give the doctor the information or the means to defeat the villain. The writing in the classic era wasn’t any better than now we just remember it so much more fondly. You can pick out something that makes no sense from pretty much any classic era tale. I still love them though. Dragonfire is one I love but everytime I watch it I think, why did kane in 3000 years, never think of buying a ship, turning the thermostat down and leaving svartos! A big difference between classic and now is that people were much kinder and forgiving then than it seems people are now.

July 19th, 2025 - 5:08pm@Bookcollector
I started watching Doctor Who in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor, yet I would say that having since fully discovered the entirety of Classic Who – many of my favourite seasons and stories (The War Games, Season 7, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, The Caves of Androzani, Remembrance of the Daleks) are easily on par with the likes of ‘Badwolf / Parting of the Ways’, ‘Human Nature / Family of Blood’, ‘The Waters of Mars’ – and the special ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’.
You’re right in that Doctor Who has always had a certain amount of silliness (both intentionally and unintentionally – my favourite being one of the Zarbi bumping into a studio camera).
That said, speaking only for myself here – there’s a certain kind of threshold where that curated ‘comedy’ – or alternatively, simply taking things less seriously or as matter of fact without any compelling plot stakes just completely ruins so many scripts, moreso post RTD1, imo.
One that springs to mind is ‘Nightmare in Silver’ from Series 7 – similarly to The Android Invasion, it is a perfect outline for a Doctor Who story (and also for a proper base-under-seige Cybermen story) set on a night-time wilderness funfair scrapyard – genuinely ideal horror potential, just utterly wasted within the first few seconds by the worst ‘comedy’ writing and, naturally of course, Clara literally smiling and laughing and making jokes while her 3-4 people squad is targeted by a literal endless / infinite amount of revived Cybermen. To this day it is just still too cringe to watch.
Bookcollector
July 19th, 2025 - 6:06pmI started watching properly in 1975. Now I loved Smith’s era, enjoyed capaldi’s, loved Jodie but Russell’s writing I’ve never been keen on and certainly since his return ive found it harder to enjoy his stories. Most of his era’s best stories for me were written by other writers. The argument you have with Clara in nightmare applies coincidentally to Tom in another nightmare. On eden no less. Tom jokes around and I find his performance spoils the story for me, his my legs, my arms my everything joke comes after numerous passengers and crew have been slaughtered by the terrifying (well they were meant to be) mandrills and it feels as if the doctor doesn’t care about the deaths. I love the book version of eden because Terrance dicks removes the humour and the story works far better. But as I say, every story has its faults and there are stories i love that have huge plot holes in. But I enjoy them so that’s all that matters. Android invasion is one that I find is weakly written, bits don’t really work but I enjoy watching it nevertheless. And if it’s a story others love that’s fine.

July 19th, 2025 - 6:09pm100% agree Bookcollector. People will enjoy the show so much more if they just appreciate an episode for what it is and for the story that the writer wants to tell. Fans seem to have all these rules about what a writer is and isn’t allowed to do these days, but Doctor Who is a show about an alien who can travel anywhere in time and space, there are no rules! Literally anything should be allowed to happen there should be no limitation on a writers creative freedom. Thinking like this has made me reevaluate Chibnalls era and fully enjoy RTDs 2nd era. If you are watching and episode like The Timeless Children hung up on the idea that the writer isnt allowed to write the doctors backstory like that, then you won’t enjoy the episode. And that seems to be what the criticism of that entire episode hinges on. Nobody criticises The War Games for basically doing the same thing in 1969. Not to mention all the political stuff which again is simply creative freedom and RTD telling the story he wants to tell which he should be allowed to do if he wants. I wrote an article for DWTV not long ago saying all this and they straight up told me they won’t post it. Instead they post article after article telling us how bad the show is doing and why it needs cancelling

July 19th, 2025 - 6:34pm@Trenzalore + @Bookcollector
Really interesting and well said points.
Season 17’s another ‘all time bestist ever’ by the broad fandom because it’s Tom with Daleks, City of Death, Shada (all super iconic images to be fair) but the proper scrutiny for what does and doesn’t work is often never addressed – wheras I feel Season 18’s the opposite – far from perfect but still has a ton of real quality moments. ‘The Keeper of Taken’ is far better than ‘The Deadly Assassin’ in my view – and ‘State of Decay’ is a beautifully made story that really gets the horror element right.
DWTV’s been getting on my wick recently because of the obvious bias towards negativity grifting and seemingly twisting the truth once or twice of recent. Though I have to say RadioTimes’ Billie Piper piece today about her response of ‘We couldn’t make Doctor Who like we did 20 years ago’ failed to disclose the fact that she was specifically referring to her Big Finish series and *not* the main series – that is, not unless you scroll to the very bottom of the RadioTimes article, in the small print, in closed brackets.
Overall I think broadly this is all to do with deliberately poor journalism online when it comes to Doctor Who – intent to create drama on social media for clicks, likes, shares, traffic, and it appears most of these ‘journalists’ couldn’t give a rats time destructor if their own personal integrity tanks, because hey most internet stars swimming in cash are absolute pillocks anyway, to put it mildly.
Trenzalore
July 19th, 2025 - 7:46pmYou’re totally right Babelbro. It’s bizarre to see fans of Doctor Who desperate to see Doctor Who cancelled. Im gonna try again with dwtv anyway and write a tame and inoffensive article, something like 5 things I liked about Ncutis era. It won’t get posted but I’ll get the satisfaction of exposing their delusion of ‘balance and impartiality’ as they scramble for a reason to not post it lol
Bookcollector
July 19th, 2025 - 9:31pmSeason 18 is underrated. Yes leisure hive starts with the most pointless tracking shot ever but the rest of the story is interesting. Full circle is well made with a good story. State of decay is beautifully costumed and shot (within the limits of a TV studio and the teatime TV horror limits) keeper is great and beevers should have been the master in more stories.
Trenzalore the deadly assassin was hated when it came out, now it’s a classic. But it changed time lord lore completely. From super beings to a race filled with political backstabbers, dullards (runcible and guards) and leaders who were happy to adjust the truth (wow, it’s like 2025) I loved Jodie’s era and I warmed to ncuti’s first series on subsequent watches. I cant say I love the writing but that’s just my opinion and I certainly wouldn’t go online demanded everyone should hate it and doctor who is dead. Something which fans said back in 1966 so it’s no new attitude. What’s changed is the vitriol involved. Oh and I’ve felt a section of fandom won’t be happy until the show is cancelled for some time now. I think they just want the satisfaction of being able to smugly say I told you so!
I enjoy classic and new who. It’s not all to my tastes. But then it wouldn’t be would it. It’s made by numerous different producers, directors, writers and actors. Some I love. Some I’m indifferent too. Some like burnt toast. (Sorry couldn’t resist!) Most who fans love the childhood who, the one they grew up with. But i think some forget that that means for other fans their childhood who is Sylvester McCoy, Chris eccleston, Matt Smith or Jodie Whittaker. I’m different somewhat. I grew up with Tom, and I like him. But I also grew up hooked on books and so I loved those first three doctors as well. So I’ve always been able to go with the changes. I may not have liked it all but I supported who all the way. I still support it now. I’d love it to continue. Here’s hoping…

July 20th, 2025 - 1:32amI duno, I disagree that wanting the show to be cancelled/take a rest doesnt make you a true fan. It’s perfectly OK to enjoy some of who and not others but personally its been terrible for years. If its rested theres a chance it could come back great again. Only a chance mind but given how awful I feel its been im happy to take that chance. I also do think things can out stay there welcome and it does do the franchise as a whole releasing drivel after drivel hoping itl get better. I’d happily take a satisfying ending while somethings at the top of its game over dragging out till the corpse stinks like we have. Alas the chance for a dignified death went for who while ago so for me a rest and a possible revamp is the best the current production can hope for. At least We’ll always have the classic series
Pete X
July 20th, 2025 - 11:03amThing is with Who, there is always the shock of the new. Fans – at least those with the loudest voices – tend to react against the newest material in comparison to older material – even material they were panning previously.
Once some temporal distance is gained from the new material things tend to calm down and be re-evaluated.
For classic Who, particularly that broadcast before the 1980’s when home video wasn’t available, Who was, occassional repeat excepted, a once a lifetime event – for Britons at least. Stories/seasons were viewed once and opinions set in stone by fan memory in DWM and various fanzines.
Thus, stories like the Gunfighters, Enemy of the World, Underworld or the whole of season 17 were wriiten off as not the best of Who and not re-evaluated until video was available sometime later.
Season 17 was re-evaluated in the 1990’s as stories were released on video and information on it’s production became available.
Enemy of the World underwent complete re-evaluation when the complete story was found and released 12 years ago and opinion not trapped in the amber of one-time-view fan memory.
Ncuti’s two seasons of Who will be re-evaluated after some time has passed. Jodies seasons are already being, now that the whole of her time on Who is available and most fans have got over it’s newnest and gained some perspective on that time.
Bookcollector
July 20th, 2025 - 1:18pmIt’s not a case of not being a true fan. But what is a fan? For me it’s someone who supports something. I’m 55 I have 50 years of watching and reading who behind me. But I understand that say, someone who is 7, and only watched ncuti will be a ncuti fan, he will be their doctor. They will be upset that ncuti has gone. So if a fan says to that 7 year old who is rubbish and needs to be cancelled that 7 year old will say no, who is brilliant, I love it. Both points of view are perfectly valid. But for fans to actively campaign to get who shut down is bizarre to me. If you don’t like it anymore just stop watching because others do like it. A friend of mine has a son. My friend stopped watching who some time ago but his son loves it. Jodie is his son’s doctor.
For me being a who fan means accepting change. You have to go with the times. Now in the 80’s I liked colin Baker as the doctor but I didn’t like a lot of his stories. I didn’t like the writing in them at times or the plots. Then McCoy turned and I loved it again. Ncuti is similar for me. I think he is a good actor but I think his stories let him down. They aren’t terrible just not as good as I think the writing could be. But Pete x is right. Time is everything. Stories and eras are constantly reassessed by new and old fans. My opinion on ncuti’s first season improved on subsequent watches. I’m sure some of season two will be the same. If doctor who continues I’ll watch it. I’ll take from it what I can. If that is an actor i think performs brilliantly, or a story i think is great or a particularly good special effect (like I did with the classic series, every story i think is weak has something good in it for me, it’s why i watch stories I’m not massively a fan of again) then I’ll be happy. And if who is at a natural end again so be it. I’m ancient, it’s the new fans I feel sorry for. I have hope who will continue and if Russell is still in charge I’ll have to adjust my thinking as a fan to accept the direction of the show and wait… for inevitably that direction will change…

July 20th, 2025 - 7:50pm@Pete X
You’ve hit the nail on the head for me in terms of mentioning the passing of time (for a substantial amount of fans);
Interestingly it’s being discussed on social media about just how good and engaging the ‘Flux’ series was for emulating the structure of ‘Trial of a Timelord’ – on a smaller scale I’d compare that structure to ‘Stranger Things’. The concept a (relatively) self contained series, a reasonably big unique moment that changes the show moving forwards and helps strengthen future stories (like ‘Wild Blue Yonder’ with a tightened budget/filming/fx schedule forcing those in charge to think outside the (blue) box.
I for one very much liked the tone and production of ‘The Woman who fell to Earth’ – all of the heavy lore, the typical over-the-top Moffat-isms totally gone, instead there was this more natural storytelling, with gritty horror elements throughout. Sadly the Whittaker era never replicated the success of that first story for me, but it’s proven it can be done without Disney or Badwolf, or RTD, or Steven Moffat.
I’m sure that in a few months or years time we will look back the the Gatwa era and lift out pieces that very much did work that many of us may well have overlooked. I suppose some pessimists might say “that’s nostalgic hindsight’ but there’s literally plenty of global film, music and video game franchises that got to where they were years after their initial unsuccessful launches due to them, naturally, being sleeper hits (Pokémon, Harry Potter, etc.)

July 22nd, 2025 - 2:45pmI’ve been a fan since the early 80s. I used to watch every episode on broadcast, spend all of my pocket money on Targets, and pester my local libraries to get in the books I hadn’t read yet.
The RTD2 era has not thrilled me at all, and I can point a lot of that dislike at RTD’s writing. I had grave misgivings when he was announced, as I’ve always felt that he is much better producer of Who than a writer of Who. In the RTD1 era I always found his stories the weakest, and his arc-plotting didn’t hold up to any sort of scrutiny, and those issues were magnified in the RTD2 era.
However, I remain an ardent fan. I can criticise things about every era, but I can find things to love as well. I acknowledge that tastes vary, and one person’s worst episode may be another favourite. I mean, I love ‘Delta and the Bannermen’ because it’s a silly romp where the Doctor defeats space Nazis by using honey, but others absolutely hate it for those same reasons.
I totally disagree with anyone who says that the show needs to be cancelled or rested, because I’d rather have Who that isn’t written for my tastes than no Who at all. I agree with those who say that a refresh is needed*, but I’d rather have a new showrunner and team to bring a fresh energy to the show. Better that than just kill it and hope that someone comes along later to resurrect it somewhere down the line.
* And I think that the problem the series has had is that RTD, Moffat, and Chibnall were all old school fans and drew from their shared love, so there’s been very little room for new ideas and fresh takes.

July 13th, 2025 - 8:54pmTardistimegirl (Iz or Steve) recently commented on one of my YT videos discussing 60’s Who and they said this in relation to their animation for Wheel.
“Another enjoyable video! Thanks again for mentioning our Wheel in Space animation. Btw, we didn’t get to the point of discussing money with the BBC (we probably would have given the animation to them, if they’d wanted it).
I agree that the Wheel mini-episode was great, it is a lot to live up to. They utilised the old animation files and models I’d created for the Loose Cannon recon, which were then adjusted and cel-shaded to match the 2D style by the brilliant Rob Ritchie.”
I’m really looking forward to their Web 3 animation.

could you imagine if they did buy tardis time version of wheel. Did some upscaling etc and did a release of it. Ian would be lived and absolutely wouldn’t hear the end of it. I have tried to watch some of his aí eps but too much not insync and footage rewinded.
Maybe this way of doing recreations using motion capture/animation. Be more lifelike movements. Even if just do one to see how it works out. Maybe a short ep like Mission
Have seen ep1 of wheel and think it’s quite good for a fan attempt. With bbc backing could be brought up to release standard.
Gordon
July 12th, 2025 - 2:41pmEven if the bbc did a u turn on it there is a bunch of legal and estate clearances and loyalty payments that would need to be crossed before it goes ahead Plus the added issue of it now being available for free on YouTube. Plus how much do they pay for it to use it on a release? It’s nowhere near as easy as the bbc buys it
Gordon
July 12th, 2025 - 2:45pmI think what is most l likely to happen is they get brought on to the official wheel animation when the time comes in the same way Rob Ritchie did on power or David Busch on shada. Maybe if there is money left over they may include it there
James
July 12th, 2025 - 3:36pmCould they not work with her?
They did with the lad who did the regeneration of 2 to 3 for war games.
YouTube would be the before version before ipscaling etc etc for the official release.
Not update with all background info. Could you please in brief explain power and shada
Bob
July 12th, 2025 - 4:05pmAs much as it’s impressive for an independant production, I’d personally rather the actual animation resemble the short included with The Macra Terror.
I do wonder why they’ve seemingly been holding this one off. It’s the last missing Cyberman story, it introduces a companion, it completes a season. It’s not a particularly beloved story by any means but its animation would mean a lot. Perhaps we’ll get it next year alongside The Myth Makers.
Gordon
July 12th, 2025 - 4:37pmThat was for 1 2 min scene. This is for 2/3rds of a story. The costs and situation are very different. Plus war games on colour was on bbc 4 so had many times the budget of a direct to dvd/blu ray release to work out any potential legal/estate issues and cost for a release
She already does work for them. She does little bits and pieces of cgi work for the bonus photo recons
Rob Ritchie worked on his own fan animations on his YouTube channel. They didn’t use any of his work but they did employ him to work on the official animations. David Busch worked on Ian Levine’s mission to the unknown and shada. It was his work on shada that got him employed on shada when the bbc did their version
Rob
July 12th, 2025 - 5:45pmRob and Anne-Marie’s Wheel short was a piece done as a tryout for her to take over the range from Charles. Rob was already working on the range from Power.
Duncan
July 13th, 2025 - 8:51amI wish the original prints turned up 🙁
Wheel is the first Who story I actually made a point of sitting down to watch. Before that, I’ve got fractured memories of the Yeti stories and The Ice Warriors. With Wheel, I watched all six episodes and I guess it’s responsible for me becoming a fan. No doubt if I saw it now I would spot its flaws but I remember a creepy, atmospheric story with Cybermen lurking in the shadows. That version on You Tube is fantastic and I agree it would be great to have it in a season 5 box.

July 12th, 2025 - 11:34amThere’s a guy on ians facebook group who has stated that there is only 1 collection per year from 2026 to allow animation releases to catch up.
Have you heard anything Gordon.
Personally, being 45 I don’t mind but obviously a lot of older fans might not be with us to complete their collections in the end.

July 12th, 2025 - 12:23pmIf it’s the Same person I’m thinking of he also claimed that nothing was being worked on for the 60s sets which was quickly debunked.
I kind of see it happening for the 60s but once all the colour seasons are out

July 12th, 2025 - 3:51pmThe Tardisgirl ‘Wheel’ animation is really excellent but I agree, not quite there for a commercial release if that were a possiblity. I am very much looking forward to their ‘Web’ 3 however. The official one is an admirable attempt but for me horrible to watch. The uncanny valley effect is just too much to my eyes.
The AI thing is still far too problematic I think. I have seen some of Ian Levine’s and there are moments that are remarkable then the next it looks absolutely horrible and that inconsistency is so jarring. Gavin Rymill is doing really impressive stuff with it just now but only short clips.
Even if the tech does inevitably get there, which I’m sure it will, the commercial rights and indeed ethics are probably too convoluted. Not as ‘simple’ as using animated likenesses. I teach art students and some of them may get into bother for using AI to simply generate a concept image for a proposed public artwork! Some official institutions are basically paranoid about it and I think the BBC might well be one of them.

July 13th, 2025 - 8:46pmNot really paranoia when ai is recreating actors without their permission or the permission of the copyright holder by using music and books. Its not paranoia to want to protect copyrighted material be it BBC or any author or musician.

July 14th, 2025 - 9:14amWith only 11, 16, 21 and WY in colour to go – I think something is going to have to give
They either put out a 60’s set with a clip restoration for the 1 missing story or hurry along with the animations in a focused way to complete some of the sets
I could see that happening for S5 as they have character prints etc for wheel
But for S1 (Marco) and S6 (pirates) its starting from scratch
I expect we will see some of The Collections come out with clip restorations sadly, there just isn’t the time to get the animations done for them all

July 14th, 2025 - 2:17pmI think we will definitely get The Smugglers, The Wheel in Space and The Space Pirates animated @D84.The problem one is Marco Polo. All seven episodes missing, I believe with no Tele snaps for episode 4. Lots of characters and changes of location. I think seasons 5 and 6 will definitely complete. Season 4 may well be complete, or with just The Highlanders with Tele snaps. Season 3 is anyone’s guess . I said before that I think the last three season releases 1,3 and 4 will be one a year.

July 15th, 2025 - 3:00pmAll may depend on how many animations the new deal is for D84. If it’s a similar ball park number as the bbc America total (7) it could mean they know there is plans to animate most or all of the remaining ones so they would be better holding off on releasing them

July 15th, 2025 - 11:56pmDo we have any news or confirmation of this “new deal” Gordon?
I know we’ve had a few mentions and leaks but anything confirmed?
Gordon
July 16th, 2025 - 12:24amDoubt we willl hear anything official about it till the next animation gets anounced.

July 20th, 2025 - 4:24amThe 1 a year rumour from next year is “uninformed rubbish“ according to Richard Bignell

July 12th, 2025 - 5:46amWhen are we getting a Troughton Season set? Surely Season 5 is complete with animation for the missing episodes, and if the BBC actually bought the computer animated ‘Wheel in Space’ currently found on YouTube (and it’s brilliant), we could get this Season out sooner rather than later.

July 12th, 2025 - 10:03amYes, it’s pretty good, save a a lot time, don’t think the BBC could do any better?
Rob
July 12th, 2025 - 10:08amIt’s perfectly viable for an inclusion for a collection release and they could release it soon.
Gordon
July 12th, 2025 - 10:26amSeason 5 isn’t complete though. It’s still needing wheel in space animation. Even If that animation was bought it would still need additional work for release which tardis time girl herself readily admits. It’s an excellent fan effort but there are definetly things that would get worked on if given a budget for release had happened. I suspect there is probably some sort of agreement in place to be done even if work ain’t started on it
Plus this could end up with dozens of submissions from other fans regardless of talent plus we would never hear the end from ian Levine and co who will drone on about how his terrible ai efforts must be used.

July 12th, 2025 - 10:40amIf the bbc did the full story up to the standard of the minisode it would be good
James
July 12th, 2025 - 11:28amIs it the plan then Gordon to complete missing ones for 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 before release of each Collection?
Prof Horner
July 12th, 2025 - 11:35amWell I kinda agree with you Gordon. Except Tardis Time girls animation is head and shoulders above most fan animations. Season 5 is an interesting season in as much as it’s fifty, fifty original episodes and animation. Although I would prefer season 6 first, I still think its a pity they couldn’t use time girls animation to get us are first Troughton season.
Gordon
July 12th, 2025 - 12:32pmI have no idea but I suspect 5, 6 and maybe 4 depending on highlanders. 1 and 3 has the challenges of Marco Polo and masterplan to cross first. think it all depends on what the next one’s are. It’s going to be tight regardless going by the current schedule
Gordon
July 12th, 2025 - 12:42pmIt is a fantastic effort and I’d love to see it be included however it may depend on who the executive was. If it was higher position than Russell he may have his hands tied.
Gordon
July 12th, 2025 - 1:05pmPlus I’d like to add I’d hold off a season 5 release anyway as I’d wait for her and her partner to finish web 3 first.
Prof Horner
July 13th, 2025 - 10:40amI certainly think that Tardis Time Girls version of Web of Fear episode 3 should be an option on any season 5 release. I also they should work on any future releases. Their work on the character faces on Wheel in Space is particularly impressive.
Gordon
July 13th, 2025 - 11:50amThe problem is it took them about 2 to do wheel and that was extremely basic. Other more complex stories in terms of number costumes locations sets will mean those more complex ones will take longer.
Also if they were hired to worked on the official animated releases things wouldn’t automatically change. They would be 1 small part of a team. Plus you can kiss goodbye to any additional cg work on the recons as she would be too busy
James
July 13th, 2025 - 11:55amGordon
You say 2 years. We’re they working on it full time or as a part time project? Plus as a fan project would be basic. But if given proper funding and done full time job would be better.
Gordon
July 13th, 2025 - 4:25pmIt started as a part time thing but then evolved into a full time thing done over a period of few years.
I’m not referring to the animation as basic but rather the sets characters and costumes. Wheel is very basic in that terms. The sets are small in number and pretty featureless, most of the characters wear pretty similar basic uniforms and the main villans are esentually all one model. Compare that with other historical stories for example where many of them are multiple complex sets loads more characters and the costumes are more detailed. Throwing extra money at it wont make that any more easier unless they are throwing extra bodies at it.

July 13th, 2025 - 8:51pmMuch as I loved the wheel recreation James, using the technology to recreate commercial BBC DVDs is a long way off. Wheel is great but the characters don’t look like the actors (Flanagan for instance) enough to expect people to buy reconstructions like this. Can you imagine the complaints! Wheel is great but as Gordon says it’s a relatively straightforward recon to make and it’s not perfect. It would require a very large budget and a much bigger team to do who this way. And that would mean much greater costs.

July 13th, 2025 - 8:55pmMeant to post this in this conversation line.
Tardistimegirl (Iz or Steve) recently commented on one of my YT videos discussing 60’s Who and they said this in relation to their animation for Wheel.

July 15th, 2025 - 3:11pmI’m with you missyrules. The software needs to evolve to be faster. If it had been a bbc commissioned piece it never would have gotten 2 years to complete it. It would never have been as good if it had been done in say12 months that savages got. Plus as you say it’s not perfect. People normally look far more closer and critically at it if it was a paid piece than if it was free. Things that are perfectly fine as a freebie may no longer be looked that way with a priced attached
