Doctor Who The Church on Ruby Road Target Hardback

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk, www.waterstones.com and www.hive.co.uk

Long ago on Christmas Eve, a baby was abandoned in the snow. Today, Ruby Sunday meets the Doctor, stolen babies, goblins and perhaps the secret of her birth…

BBC Books have announced the Target novelisation of The Church on Ruby Road, the first full adventure featuring the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and the introduction of his new best friend, Ruby Sunday played by Millie Gibson. Russell T Davies’ original script has been novelised by up-and-coming literary talent Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson.

The Church on Ruby Road by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson is out in hardback on 25th January 2024. It is available to pre-order here

Little is known about Ruby Sunday as she was abandoned on Christmas Eve as a baby. Now living with her mum, Carla and grandmother, Cherry her world is about to be turned upside when she encounters the Doctor and the two set off on their first adventure together…

Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson is a science-fantasy author and co-founder of the organisation Impact of Omission, as featured in the Guardian, Huffpost, and the Channel 4 Documentary ‘Where’s My History?’ with footballer and anti-racism campaigner Troy Deeney.

Winner of the inaugural Gollancz and Rivers of London BAME SFF Award in 2020, now known as the Future Worlds Prize, her writing is invariably about Black people dismantling space empires, travelling through time, and saving the world – often simultaneously.

Mine arrived today! It’s lovely and it is categorically a BBC book. It does not mention Target anywhere.

The original target hardcovers didn’t mention target either. They were still target books though. And as the press release says… this is a target book.

Just received mine and it literally says on the inside flap “the target novelisation of the first full adventure of the 15th doctor”

Call me strange, but I would like the softback Target to have this exact same cover design, if at all possible. The original Target series moved with the times. I am feeling (and hoping) the retro throwback style – fun though it has been – has run its course…

Either that or, let’s have Alistair Peason ’80s inspiration on these Target covers… for a change.

The Paperback Target book of the Star Beast has Aknowledgements and Thanks.

Anthony Dry has a page Saying these are his final covers for the range. I imagine the new Target book for July 2024 will keep the cream covers. unless like these they all Go blue . I think the Three specials are the best covers for a while. Be interesting what comes next ,as you say,the full sized photo used on The Churvh on Ruby Street,is very nicely done.

      All the best Bryan

Wow a new WH Allen/Longbow Target Hardback, wonderful,as is the cover, something very different for tge Range.

Have they dropped the Curved logo or keeping that for Target Paperback. with a different cover. Gosh, 4 new Novelisation Target or otherwise and that just January .

be brilliant if ,like the recent Kate Bush re release of Hounds of love, ( “little light shining” an Led embedded in the gatefold sleeve with Solar panel to keep it charged) we could have Janice belting out the Goblin song on the inside back cover ….

I don’t think this is a Target book. The Target books are a paperback range. There is no Target emblem on the cover. It’s just a hardback novelisation of the episode, on the face if it. There will probably be a Target paperback version in due course.

It was described in the latest DWM as being a Target novelisation, although I do find the decision to go hardback and having no target logo on the cover a little odd. I’m gonna wait ’til I’ve seen the episode before pre-ordering this one.

I think Bryan was referring to the shape and size of the book seemingly matching the original Target hardback books released by WH Allen in the 80s. I had exactly the same thought myself. Love the cover.. the achilleos style is nice but very over used of late.

It literally says in the press release that this is a target book.

And it literally says nowhere on the cover or the spine that it is a Target book. So it’s a legitimate question to ask.

The original hardback novels did not feature the target logo on the cover. The logo only appeared on the cover of the paperback editions

      Hi Anon.

Hardbacks were published a few months before Paperback in the Target Years, publishedby longbow or WH Allen. The Target branding was always only used on The paperback edition. TARGET,Tandem ,or star books.

All ownened by the main company Longbow/WH Allen. They were all called Target Books.

As far as I can tell the Terrance Dicks Tribute vol 1 & 2 are the only Harbacks with the Target logo.

I imagine as every Doctor (from 2005) bar 14 has had original fiction Hardbacks these might join Ruby Road in size .

I was wondering that myself Bob. I suppose it depends on how quickly the new series comes on TV. If it isn’t long they may hold out for a full series release. Remember there are 8 episodes so they may want to add the Christmas one into a full release. Be nice to own the episode before having the novel though so I’d be happy with a separate release for ruby road.

I think if it was they would announce it by now, so I think we will just get it with the complete season blu-ray. I believe Jane Tranter mentioned somewhere that the seasons should start in May, so I assume July/August will be Blu-Ray time.

At first I was unsure about the cover being so different from the rest of the modern Targets, but it’s grown on me, I like it.

I love those novelisations, but I hope that this HC version doesn’t mean the end of the paperback Targets. Cause I got used to the pocket books that I can have on me everytime.
