Doctor Who The Abominable Snowmen Steelbook

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk, www.zavvi.com and other selected retailers.

The Abominable Snowmen will be released in 2022 on DVD, Blu-ray and as an exclusive Steelbook this year, filling another gap in missing Doctor Who episodes.

Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen is a six-part story based on audio recordings of the original episodes. Most of the six-part adventure story was lost soon after the programme’s original transmission in 1967 and only the audio recordings of the episodes survived. in missing Doctor Who episodes.

In the 17th century, an old Tibetan friend of the Doctor’s reached out and touched the mind of an alien disembodied energy, giving it a conduit to Earth. 300 years later, the Doctor returns to the Himalayas to return the Holy Ganta, an ancient relic he was given many centuries ago by the grateful monks at Det-Sen Monastery.

On arriving however, the Doctor is treated as a villain – blamed for a series of brutal murders in the area. Jamie and Victoria meanwhile discover the true culprits – the previously peaceful Yeti that live in seclusion on the mountainside have apparently turned violent.

The Doctor must convince the monks that not only is he not their enemy, but the real foe – and the power controlling the Yeti – is living amongst them. Their ancient Master, Padmasambhava, is being controlled by an alien entity known only as the Great Intelligence.

Zavvi is currently showing a release date for May 30th 2022. Though that could just be a placeholder date.

Brilliant news. Now, how about an animated version of Scratchman with Tom, Sadie and Chris? Crying out to be done.

Hi I understand that Season 17 limited edition has been delayed, but very confused regarding the absence of a “standard” edition on all retail adverts? Wheras with the animation steelbooks, there is always an instant option for pre ordering the standard blu ray packaging.

I suppose my question is, was the standard blu ray packaging only intended for seasons 10, 12, 18, 19, 23? This for me is a big deal because I wanted to invest and collect the classic era specifically as slimline standard blu rays, for many different reasons.

I had assumed they would be playing catchup on Seasons 8, 14, 26 first, but amazed at the ongoing time gap as opposed to how quickly this first batch of standards were pushed out together.

I will try to message Amazon, otherwise if anyone knows any clues on the production roadmap I would very much appreciate this. If they’ve discontinued them then I better start again on the limited editions! Hope not haha.

Seems as though the standard Issues are being spaced out to keep the The limited edition releases exclusivity. They released the first four in pairs to reel people in who desired these. I should imagine season 26 will come sometime in the new year followed by the others intermittently.

The standard editions of the collection sets will always happen some time after the limited edition versions. The limited editions need to sell out first as those limited releases are the ones that cover the finance of the set and without the limited edition releases there won’t be a standard edition set down the line. Going be what is speculated some believe it’s a 2 year gap between the limited release and standard release so going by that the next standard edition (26) might be in January. At a guess the reason why they did a few quite quickly at the start was to catch up and to establish the standard versions. Don’t expect too much info from Amazon as they are only a retailer and probably don’t know much about what the future release schedule is.

I would just like to start by saying a huge thank you for the very detailed responses to my message, I appreciate this. I understand that all we can do is guess, but I think what you have both highlighted on exclusivity on the Limited Editions is most likely the actual answer.

I do believe that there must always be a standard, on the shelf accessible method for aquiring Doctor Who, especially because more than ever we have an audience that is actively curious of both the classic and new series, which is why I strongly support and buy the slimline blu rays – speaking as someone that can vividly remember the sheer costs of the individual dvds when they began about 20 years ago! I think like any film media, quite rightly we as the fans and consumers should have the choice of the standard or limited and Who is no different.

I completely agree with many of the posts from people down below regarding the re-sellers directly affecting how we consume these products, and continue to do so sadly due to the way things simply are. I’ve always felt that the animation release have always got the marketing just right – Steelbook, standard blu ray, dvd, all on pre-order.

I’m not sure if there is much more to say on this subject, but if we somehow see another batch slim-line release of Seaons 8,14,26 if by a miracle, wouldn’t that be great! Many thanks again for your replies.

My line in my message seems to have vanished regarding Britbox. I wanted to point out that Britbox is a great entry into Classic who, but like New Who, I imagine, and have concern that inevitably it will one day dematerialise. (Just wanted to include this back in as it was part of my message, thank you)

Interesting. Digital Spy are reporting this as a 4K steelbook, but since no-one else is I imagine they’re getting their facts quite wrong.

Just realised that the DVD & Blu-Ray listings state that this is going to be a 2-Disc set…

The press release also doesn’t mention a black & white version of the story, only colour, so with this in mind have the B&W versions of the animations been discontinued?

PS, the press release does state however that the original episode two will be included, so disc 1 could be the colour animation and disc 2 the tele-snaps with surviving episode…

Wouldn’t pay too much attention to the disc count or the lack of mention of a black and white disc. I will be gobsmacked if there isn’t 1. I’m sure it will all become clear when the full disc content willl be announced

Hopefully you are right! It would be such a shame if they canned the B&W animation, as I always watch the B&W version with any existing episodes.

I doubt very much that they aren’t doing a monochrome version. It’s early days yet it may be out March or April if we are lucky but even so it will be some time I presume before the listings are announced. I’m pretty sure it will be three discs. What do you think Gordon? Oh and Gordon, 53 to go!

    • Gordon

      November 25th, 2021 - 11:38pm

I’m sure it’s going to be similar to other 6/7 part animated stories. 1 disc colour 1 disc black and white and 1 for the recon. They have never not supplied a black and white animation for a colour animated story and I doubt they will start now. yes only 53 to go. Only 1 or 2 projects left to get us over the half way line.

38 hartnell and 15 Troughton episodes

      Season 1: 7 episodes
      Season 2: 2 episodes
      Season 3: 25 episodes
      Season 4: 10 episodes (4 hartnell 6 Troughton)
      Season 5: 4 episodes
      Season 6: 5 episodes

If the worst comes to the worst. Just watch in Colour with the Colour control turned right down. It will be in Black and White just the same.

      November 26th, 2021 - 3:44pm

I very much doubt it won’t include a black and white version of the animation as that is the main version I watch with the surviving episode and I’m sure most people do as well. These animations are suppose to be a new visual version of the missing episodes so it would be very disappointing if it only includes colour as that isn’t accurate to the original production

I can’t afford to buy all the animations individually and then again in The Collection range so as I would rather only buy once I will wait.

I recommend listening to this podcast. It has Gary Russell been interviewed about the galaxy 4 animation and Peter Crocker about the restoration of the surviving footage.

Web snowman and galaxy 4 was all commissioned at the same time and the plan was to do some of g4 then start on snowman and do both at the same time but covid happened.

Don’t get me wrong I’m really happy this is getting released but because it’s doctor who day I was hoping and preying that the powers that be might have announced a re release for the series 9 steelbook.
Come on guys let’s make this happen please and wipe the smiles off the faces of the scalpers on eBay who are just being beyond greedy.
The dr who brand caved in eventually when they realised that the 1st blu ray collection set was way under the demand and they said ok we had no idea how popular this was going to be and they eventually righted a wrong so please dr who enterprises or whoever is in charge of the steelbook range PLEASE PLEASE re release series 9 steelbook for the many fans who don’t have this set.

I totally agree, I was hopeful series 9 steelbook was going to be announced as well. But on the positive note the Abominable snowmen animation finally getting a proper announcement is amazing and I’m very much looking forward to it. I wonder what the other animation team is working on?

      November 24th, 2021 - 10:41am

It wouldn’t be a re-release as such. Both Series 9 and 10 (including TUAT in 10) should be released as the continuation of the Series 1 to 8 Steelbooks we’ve had. The old 9 and 10 were limited exclusives to Amazon.

I expect 9 to be released Spring 2022 with Doctor and Clara artwork on front and monsters on the back.

      November 24th, 2021 - 1:07pm

I don’t see it happening. It’ll turn into a cycle because once series 9 is re-released or released with new art, then they’ll be demand for 10 and then 11 and then series 1 to be re-released and so on. Maybe give it a few years and they’ll re-release them on 4k steelbook

I expect that will come if ever “The Collection” of those seasons is released.

The big unknown at the moment is IF the team teams behind “The Collection” are willing to wait until all the missing parts in a particular season are animated before considering putting it out

Personally I would prefer they did – so that each season is complete using any telesnap reconstruction as an extra rather than the main feature

      Time will tell I guess

Not surprised it’s being done but I was surprised that big finish creative are tackling it. Maybe they are doing wheel or something else.

I like the teaser we got. It’s very fury from the deep in style but it’s obviously going to benefit from the improvements they made and experience with galaxy 4. If it’s in the same ball park quality wise as galaxy 4 I will be happy with it.

BBC Studios. Is it too late to hope for Dalek’s Masterplan for the 60th…

    • Gordon

      November 24th, 2021 - 9:10am

If they started masterplan straight after evil (July 2021) it would give them just over 2 years bearing in mind to have it out in time for the anniversary they would need to have it done 1-2 months before release. Considering the sheer amount of characters sets and costumes I think it might be a struggle to get it done in time.

      November 24th, 2021 - 9:18am

Ah yes thanks Gordon & anonymous

Would it be wild and out there to suspect and hope they are now building out their existing 10 minute version of Wheel in Space to a full 6 episodes?

As with all these things I imagine they have recognised their own improvement over the last few years (Macra > Evil) so may just want to start again but, they have some of the character prints pre existing and its quite a self contained (base under siege) story so not exactly controversial in terms of choice (difficult backgrounds and characters etc)

      Just a thought…………….

Nope, I do too. I love Web, but there’s something about The Abominable Snowmen that just gives it the edge, I dunno whether it’s because of Terrance Dick’s brilliant writing in the Target book version or whether it’s because it piques my interest for long enough with the audio version, there is something

      Classic!

I love the monks, it a great setting for the Yeti as well, the Intelligence is really chilling in this one, Web is a little repetitive and the scene where they hang the doctor outside the monastery is brilliant.

I don’t have any problem with big finish doing Abominable Snowmen.its only web of fear episode 3 with it’s bizarre body movement which gives the impression that that they are suffering from some unpleasant medical condition, that I don’t like. hope that means we get Wheel in Space next year as Meaning season 5 gets finished sooner rather than later.

It was never planned Coleman, only that short edited version of episode 1 was produced. The animation team at the time said it was an example not a tease of a forthcoming release. I don’t think it will be long before it’s done unless they decide to hold onto a major monster as the final troughton release.

Must agree with you Robert. This is the missing story I was looking forward to most so a little disappointed it’s this team. The animated ‘Evil’ was very good so was hoping this would be the same animators.

I fully understand the budget constraints but the odd anatomical proportions are so distracting in the BF attempts. The need to ‘fill’ the widescreen ratio doesn’t help either. Having said that, from the clip, the backgrounds do look a vast improvement on those from ‘Galaxy 4’.
