      no it feeds off the actual signal, it just has to be within 1-2metres of the unit. apart from 3, as it does not work with 3 as that was a new “thing” when this was released.
      no connecting, no linking just put your phone near it, and when you get a text or a call it will flash and make the noises.(make sure you turn it on though) WARNING after a few calls it gets irritating as your trying to talk to someone with all the wheezing(tardis sounds) going on in background.

        You probably use blue tooth or the charger
