I think for this release they should swap the Master to Jack and the angels to the Judoon

Ignoring the obvious issue, I feel like the Weeping Angels should have been saved for the Series 5 steelbook (though I guess they could go with the Silurians).

I also feel like purple would have been better suited to Series 4 or 6. I’ve always associated Series 3 with orange, but that might just be me!

The artwork itself great. Flabbergasted that she was actually *instructed* to use blonde hoodie for Series 3 because it was “more popular”. These people haven’t got a clue.

I really don’t get why they thought that one would be more popular? Is it because generally End of Time is (somehow) more popular than the Series 3 finale and it’s more iconic because it’s Tennant’s last Story?

Because literally everyone hates the Blonde Hoodie Skeletor Master, or at least I thought so. I’d understand if they put the Series 10 Master on it, but this one?

I think it would’ve definitely made more sense for the Weeping Angels to have the back cover of Series 5’s steelbook instead of Series 3 because The Master’s return was a lot bigger than Blink at the time and it was only afterwards that Blink became popular.

Looking at the artist’s twitter (@ragenruin if you wish to check it out), they have answered a fan’s query about the Master image saying “I received indications from my editors to depict the Master in that form, probably because its better known or more popular”

Later in the thread they confirm the piece is approved as is but state “…if the BBC wants me to, I’m completely open to make some corrections”

There is little point in blaming the artist for this mess (in fact their titan comic covers are absolutely gorgeous). It is the doing of some higher-ups with no care for detail, only quick sales.

We should all message her urging her to ask them to allow her to alter it. I’ve already sent an email of complaint to WW. Aside from the glaring errors it’s not that awful but I just can’t invest in it in this form. In trying to push the more popular aspects and saving money in the short term it will cost them much more in the long run. I should be known as doing a KFC!

      February 24th, 2018 - 12:08pm

I’m not sure how this saves money, the cost of producing the steelbook will be same regardless of artist.

one would imagine the pay for the cover would be equal as well?

I believe she has said she will go back to the BBC because of the comments, there is nothing but negativity of the BBC Facebook page so we will we if they take notice.

      February 24th, 2018 - 1:23pm

I actually really feel for her. If it weren’t for the wrong Master and for the Angels on the back, in particular the Big Chief figure, it really wouldn’t be so bad. But if she’s been backed into a corner with the brief then it’s really not her fault.

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      February 24th, 2018 - 2:20pm

From what I’ve seen on her Twitter page she was told to depict The Master as he appeared in The End of Time so that’s the editors at BBC WW’s fault for making a massive mistake. I think a lot frustration is aimed at her because people, like me admittedly, assumed that she made the mistake when it’s actually BBC WW’s for not thinking it though properly. If this doesn’t get good sales, I can’t see anymore re-releases being produced because Series 1 and 2’s releases don’t seem to have been popular as they’re still available on most websites like Amazon.

      February 24th, 2018 - 3:45pm

There’s nothing wrong with the artwork in itself, it’s actually extremely good, it just doesn’t fit well with the previous releases or represent Series 3 well. As a poster or canvas print I’m sure it’d be superb, but as a cover for a specific series, it doesn’t quite do the job that the previous two have done.

The most confusing aspect of this is that Lee Binding is still heavily involved with the BBC and his love for the show it clear. He recently did the artwork for the new ‘The Missy Chronicles’ book AND for the new special edition DVD of ‘The Enemy of the World.’ WHY then did they opt not to use him for this?

I don’t mind the art style, I actually quite like it. But it doesn’t work well with the previous steelbooks. I also agree with the comments regarding the master, he also looks kind of squished in. But I can understand how hard it is to fit the characters in such a small space. I was really hoping Lee Binding would at least be doing all of David Tennant’s years, shame the BBC didn’t commission him. I was hoping it would look like this:

That would have been brilliant although I’d have lost the Angel on the back. I can’t begin to say how disappointed I am by this release especially as I’ve been looking forward to it for so long. The first two books felt really special, hence I invested in them. This one just feels cheap.

So while I’m still annoyed at the wrong Master being used and think that the Angels shouldn’t have been the villain to feature on this box….I do admit the cover is growing on me. I mean even if it is wrong, it’s still kinda aesthetically pleasing.

Even if they just changed to the correct Master and moved him to the back, removing the BC Angel in the process. That would be enough for me to purchase.

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      February 23rd, 2018 - 5:10pm

I agree, if those elements were tweaked I would pick it up straight away. I would prefer it if they moved the correct image of the Master to the back cover and for the front to have just the Tenth Doctor and Martha if the design was tweaked but unfortunately I think it’s too late for them to alter it now.

Amazon must be joking if they think they can get away with charging £33.99 for this. I know it’s the standard RRP they charge for a steelbook, but the price shouldn’t be that high for something that clearly no care or effort has been put into. I really hope this gets scrapped at the last minute as I should imagine Lee Binding’s draft paintings he did will look ten times better than this.

after all this time dont people know how Amazon work?

they always list at the RRP then the price comes down the nearer the release date in-line or lower than other retailers.

also whatever people think of the cover its nothing to do with Amazon or its pricing

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      February 23rd, 2018 - 1:14pm

I’ve not had a problem with the price they’ve charged for them in the past, but on this occasion I’m against it because of the design itself more so. There has been an eight month gap between this and the Series 2 steelbook release and I expected the design to be just as good as the previous two which is why I’m disappointed, I don’t blame Amazon. The Series 9 and 10 steelbooks were slightly more expensive than the Series 1 and 2 releases but they were worth the money so I didn’t mind paying that price for them. Also if anything, the price for the Series 10 steelbook didn’t decrease, it’s become more expensive as time’s passed.

Amazon must be joking if they think they can get away with charging £33.99

they didn’t design it or approve it nor do they set the RRP

I do tend to agree the use of the “wrong master” shouldn’t happen though

the brand manager of 12 years left at Christmas so maybe things are slipping through that shouldn’t

the designer may have been supplied the images and not aware, if it wasn’t for that there seem plenty who still like the cover

the artist seems to have done a lot of titan comic covers

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      February 23rd, 2018 - 3:17pm

The price can only be seen as a problem because of the design which is the problem I have with it, I probably should have explained that better. I know Amazon don’t set the RRP nor do they approve the design, I just personally don’t agree with how much it costs for the design they’re selling. If we were given a design which reflected Series 3 better with a colour palette similar to the packaging of the Series 3 5” line and the correct image of The Master on the back instead of being dedicated to Blink it would’ve worked better and I would feel better about paying the price for something I would be satisfied with.

    • Gareth Pugh

      February 24th, 2018 - 12:04pm

I think booboo’s point is that no-one need worry that if they were to pre-order from Amazon now that they would ever be charged £33 – or to put it another way, no, Amazon don’t think they can get away with this price – and they almost certainly aren’t intending to. Your point about Capaldi series steelbooks going up in price is true but there you’re talking about a post-release sold-out situation where demand outran supply and a second hand market can ask ‘rarity’ prices.

It might already be too late of course, but if enough people can get in quick, maybe they would do something. Which to be honest would help everyone out, the fans in terms of getting a decent product, and presumably the seller in terms of sales!

I remember someone made up an email of complaint about series 7 and we all sent it to Worldwide. They actually listened and changed the release. If we do the same here perhaps they will cite the problem and will alter the release before it goes to print to prevent a huge dip in sales.

I love that design, just think with the arty, paint kind of style of the other steel books that would look perfect. I just don’t understand why anybody would think the best thing to associate with series 3 would be the weeping angels. This really is infuriating! How lazy! Who approved this? It’s not a big ask to have images from the correct series used! It’s disappointing if the first two didn’t sell well enough to keep producing them at the same level, but how will this help? Surely this will sell less copies because of the lazy quality of the art work! I’m sure many completist collectors would rather them have stopped at series 2 than start producing stuff that really isn’t up to standard! Who would have been responsible for this? BBC Worldwide? I’d love to understand the thought processes behind this. So disappointed as the first two were first class!

    How to fix this:

    1) Remove the Master from the front
    2) Change the overall colour scheme to remove the purple. Continue the with the same palette used on the series two book but perhaps replace the orange with a dark green.
    3) Remove everything on the back and replace it with an image of Simm holding his sonic over his shoulder as in on the front cover of the original release.

Hey presto! Decent, easy to produce, fan pleasing book.

The Weeping Angels have only been included because of how overrated Blink is, but considering how one of the images used is a Big Chief image and how badly rendered the Angels are it doesn’t do a very good job representing that episode.

That would have been perfect. Although with the Daleks already gracing two sets I’d use the Sontarans for series four (although I expect that the BBC would go with Davros and the Daleks as Daleks tend to sell more).

Also don’t forget the specials! No sure how those would be done.

    • Omega63

      February 22nd, 2018 - 5:55pm

I’d personally suggest they did The 2009 Specials as a release.
And then there’s two options, do The Day of the Doctor and The Time of the Doctor as two singular Steelbooks, it’d be nice for Day, but the Time doesn’t really warrant an individual one like Day. So I’d say do a 50th Anniversary Specials Steelbook with both in (and An Adventure in Space and Time and Night of the Doctor).

On the other hand, if they could get them into Series 7 without AAISAT and NOTD I’d go for that as well.

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      February 22nd, 2018 - 6:15pm

To be honest, it was the Series 9 steelbook that broke the theme for the back covers by including an image of Clara instead of any monster so really we should be getting the Doctor on the front and companion from each series on the back of each release. The steelbooks as a collection don’t fit next to one another any way as the style of the images for the Series 9 and 10 steelbooks use pre-existing art whereas the Series 1-3 steelbooks use edited images.

    • Jackson Lake

      February 22nd, 2018 - 6:59pm

Personally I would prefer if they backend the 2008-10 Specials with Series 4 (I think it’s possible to reduce them to 2 discs on blu-ray) and the 2013 ones with Series 7, but true, both contain enough material to be separate boxsets.

    • Omega63

      February 22nd, 2018 - 7:03pm

Oh yes I completely agree, I’d love The Specials repackaged into Series 4. But 1. This is the BBC and they know they could make more money separately. And 2. That’d be 6 Discs in a 15mm spine Steelbook, which I know Series 9 and 10 had, but I hate the stacked discs in them Steelbooks. And I wish they’d somehow reduce the amount of Discs of the Series 5-10 Blu-rays to make it 3-4 Discs.

    • Jackson Lake

      February 22nd, 2018 - 8:11pm

True, but look at the Matt Smith / Peter Calpladi Years Bluray sets, each Series was spread across 3 discs, but of course: use of more material = more profit… (I think)

Is it only me who doesn’t remotely associate purple with Series 3? Purple is Series 4 in my eyes. Series 3 very much has a green colour palette…

Definitely. 100% agree. Wonder what Lee will be thinking.

Agreed. Purple is more S4. And thanks to the Character Options figure range from 10 years ago that grouped each figure into a Series, S3 to me to Green…some could argue a golden yellow from the original DVD boxset but that’s already taken by the S1 steelbook

I’m liking the design, I just don’t like the image they’ve used for John Simm’s Master from The End of Time instead of how he appeared in The Sound of Drums/Last of The Time Lords.

On reflection and despite my original comment I’ve decided I don’t like it. I don’t like the colour, I think it’s supposed to represent the time vortex but it doesn’t work very well. The image of The Master on the front is wrong and I definitely think he should’ve been placed on the back instead of the Weeping Angels as they’ve only been included due to the amount of popularity Blink has. Having said that the rendering for them is terrible as well as the TARDIS and does a bad job of representing an iconic episode. It’s a shame, this one of my favourite series’ so I was hoping the steelbook would do it some justice.
