Doctor Who Power of the Daleks Animation DVD

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk

Also available to order from www.hmv.com

Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks, the brand new animated version of the much celebrated lost story, is set to be a must buy for every Doctor Who fan with a wealth of extra material available with both the BBC Store and DVD releases.

This highly anticipated adventure will be released on BBC Store on Saturday 5th November, exactly 50 years to the minute after it was first transmitted on BBC One at 5.50pm on Saturday 5th November, 1966, with DVD following on Monday 21st November.

Extra treats fans can look forward to include commentaries and surviving footage, together with a documentary feature which stars the original cast and crew. Other bonus features include a gallery of artwork from the animation, and original shooting script. There’s even a rare chance to hear the original Dalek recordings from the show.

It’s one of the Doctor’s most celebrated adventures and yet no complete film recordings of The Power of the Daleks are known to have survived. The master negatives were destroyed in an archive purge in 1974.

The six half-hour episodes feature the regeneration, or as it was then called ‘renewal’, of First Doctor William Hartnell into Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, as the Time Lord and his companions Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) do battle with the Daleks on the planet Vulcan.

Animator Charles Norton says: ‘It’s been wonderful to have been able to track down so much rare and previously unreleased material and I hope that fans enjoy the excellent package we’ve been able to assemble.’

Think we should give some thanks to the fans who recorded early stories on their reel to reel tapes, cause lost stories like these would not be available in audio or cartoon format, if it wasn’t for them. Apparently the BBC wiped video tapes and didn’t even hold any audio copies of the programs. So many of these lost stories were supplied on audio format to the BBC by the fans.

I hope enough people tune in to watch it when it Aires causing a significant enough boost in ratings to make the BBC want to Animate the rest. Since there are only 18 missing stories. That’s equivalent to “One” partial season of most animated series in the U.S. there is absolutely No reason that BBC can’t afford to drop that Dime. If nothing else the BBC should establish the Style of art in which the cartoon should be produced and outsource the Labor to Fans who have artistic ability enough to draw each story collectively. That is to say, one guy draws 10 minutes worth of drawings = 14400 drawings ( 24 drawings a sec ) sounds crazy but is easier than you think. 4 Artists complete a story, or 8 Artists drawing 7200 drawings, etc…etc… I volunteer for free.

you say only 18 storys but if you say 4 eps a story thats 72 episodes which is 3 and half full amaerican seasons as most shows have 22 episodes.

What should the DVD cover of ‘The Power of the Daleks’ look like? Should it look like the cartoon featured? Or should it be photographic? showing and utilizing images from the actual original production?

At the very least I hope there is a reverse cover. One that has the grey roundels with the story title and Doctor Who logo in the top right. Also with Troughton’s face in the bottom left corner, and says ‘The Patrick Troughton Years 1966 – 69’. It’s only right and fair for us collectors to have a cover that will seemingly match in with the rest of the classic series DVDs.

I agree with booboo, cartoon cover for the animation. If miraculously the whole power of the Daleks episode was found then I would say cover they have done for the Web of Fear and The Enemy of the World.

I suppose a cartoon cover would be ideal. But in the style of ‘Scream of the Shalka’, which was still in the classic series style cover. I want a photographic picture of Troughton on the spine though. A cartoon one just wouldn’t look right.

So, after ‘The Power of the Daleks’ is released on DVD. There will only be 18 classic series stories NOT available on DVD, with their own individual release.
Stories without a DVD available are ‘Marco Polo’ , ‘The Crusade’ , ‘Galaxy 4’ , ‘Mission to the Unknown’ , ‘The Myth Makers’ , ‘The Dalek Master Plan’ , ‘The Massacre’ , ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ , ‘The Savages’ , ‘The Smugglers’ , ‘ The Highlanders’ , ‘The Macra Terror’ , ‘The Faceless Ones’ , ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ , ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ , ‘Fury from the Deep’ , ‘The Wheel in Space’ and ‘The Space Pirates’.
I know ‘Galaxy 4’ had a photographic reconstruction alongside Part 3, as an extra on ‘The Aztecs’-‘Special Edition’ DVD. But it hasn’t been released on it’s own, within it’s own DVD case and cover.
But it’s impressive what has been released from Sixties Doctor Who, considering so many episodes still missing.

What’s puzzling is why when the BBC says it’s “unethical” to animate more than 2 episodes of a lost story, they still haven’t made Mission to the Unknown or The Crusade, one of which has the same number of episodes missing as The Moonbase or The Ice Warriors and the other has less.

    • Gordon

      September 23rd, 2016 - 1:21am

For mission to the Unknown you can’t release it on its own plus it’s too tied to masterplan

  • Tim M

    September 15th, 2016 - 6:13pm

I can’t help feeling that this animation for ‘The Power of the Daleks’ is a ‘one off’. Mainly because of the fact that it is completely missing, it’s Troughton’s first story, it features the Daleks (as no 2nd Dr v Daleks story is currently available), and the fact the story highly regarded by fans of all ages, which is quite a feat for a story completely missing it’s visuals.

I consider Troughton stories on DVD already with animation (The Moonbase, The Ice Warriors and The Invasion) adequate ways of completing those stories. And although I would of course welcome any returns of the actual missing episodes themselves. Those episodes are near the bottom of my wish list of ones to be recovered. But however good the animation for ‘The Power of the Daleks’ is (and I’m sure it will be excellent), those 6 missing episodes would still be very high on my wish list.

When I watched the trailer for the DVD release, I started wondering what aspect ratio it will be appear in. Because the original episodes were broadcasted in aspect ratio 4:3. The trailer seems to be screened in aspect ratio 16:9.

Are the restored animated episodes likely to be screened in aspect ratio 16:9?

i have to say i don’t want a download bbc store only release for any episode, personally it has to be a physical release on dvd or nothing for me. there’s no point in restoring /animating episodes for a very small audience, dvd encourages sales, downloads encourages piracy – just ask big finish! i dread to think of the amount of money they have lost to people copying and downloading their episodes.
Also dvd means extras i know this won’t be popular but i’d rather pay for a dvd release than have a downloaded copy on a disc. I’m old-fashioned but there you are…

It’s where the future lies. Netflix downloads etc are still a growing market. DVDs are declining year on year. It will take a few years to die but it will eventually. Might not be in this generation though. Look at how quick vhs died within a couple of years of DVD becoming a big thing. Everything is pirated these days. Regardless of it just being DVD or download. Hours within it being released it will be online. Being just on DVD won’t prevent it going on illegal streaming and download sites

They’ve already said they won’t be doing ‘The Crusade’ – animating white actors in non-white roles is asking for controversy, and they’d sooner not take the risk at this moment. So, for the time being at least, animating ‘The Crusade’ is out of the question.

    • Koquillion

      September 11th, 2016 - 7:28pm

Thats ridiculous, PC culture should not infect the preservation of history, for then you are not better than Hitler getting rid of Jewish history. Plus the Crusade is my favourite story, people didn’t complain when they restored (for the blu-ray) Lawrence of Arabia when Alec Guinness played an Arab, would it really be that controversial?, just animate them as though they were Arabian. Problem solved.

    • Gordon

      September 11th, 2016 - 7:39pm

I really don’t get why people are scrambling for that next. If its successful there is the possibility of evil masterplan fury etc. With the bbc store bbc worldwide can produce the stories that have 1 or 2 missing and it would be less of a risk than having just a DVD release would be in 2013-14. No extras to produce and no DVD manufacturing costs. All that would need to get paid is the animation and audio restoration. For example just say web 3 cost 15,000 to make. Sell it on bbc store for 2.99. Only needs about 5000 people to buy it from the store to break even. Because the DVD would have additional costs of restoration and extras. You would need to sell at least double that to break even if it was just dvd. Then once it’s broken even you can sell it on DVD. Easy peasy

    • Dr RevWho

      September 11th, 2016 - 7:53pm

I think it’s for completion’s sake – if we get a DVD release of ‘The Crusade’, we have the complete second season of the classic series on DVD. But, I personally think the next logical step would be one of the bigger stories like ‘Evil’ of ‘Fury’ as you say (again all depending on the success of ‘Power’). Another factor in the BBC’s decision not to do ‘The Crusade’ is simply that the historicals aren’t popular enough – at least, not as popular as the sci-fi stories or those with more missing episodes. It really all comes down to what will make the biggest profit, and, in terms of profit, ‘The Crusade’ really isn’t going to be as appealing as stories like ‘Power’ or ‘Evil’ or ‘Master Plan’.

    • Tim M

Absolutely right Jay. They have the telesnaps for missing episodes 2 & 4, so they could release it on DVD with telesnaps and audio, just like ‘The Underwater Menace’. Who knows, Phillip Morris may find a 16mm filmed copy somewhere. ‘The Crusade’ was sold to several countries during the sixties.

    • prototype dalek

      September 13th, 2016 - 10:22pm

They did that with the web of fear so I don’t see why not

    • Gordon

      September 14th, 2016 - 12:35am

What must be taken into account is how poor a state crusade is. Even with all the work it was probably the worst restored episodes in the range

    • Dr RevWho

      September 14th, 2016 - 3:58pm

In the case of ‘The Web of Fear’ they’d just announced that they had found episodes before the release. Seeing as they had five of the six episodes (four of which had not been released yet) they wanted to release it as soon as possible, and the lack of Episode 3 meant they had to fill in the gap. The quickest, and cheapest, option was a recon, hence why we got a recon there.
We were lucky to get ‘The Underwater Menace’, and the only reason we got it at all was because of the money the BBC had spent on the extras – which they weren’t willing to allow to go to waste – and the fact that, at the time, Episode 2 was the only fully surviving classic episode that had not been released yet. They had planned to release it with animations but, when that fell through, they had to settle for recons – which does not excuse the poor quality of the recons at all.
So, basically, my gander at the reason that the BBC probably won’t be doing recons for further episodes is that they don’t see any need to if the existing episodes are all available (which they are (via the Lost in Time set or (for Galaxy 4) the ‘Aztecs’ SE release)), and the fact that they know to do so would not attract as big a profit as either animating the episodes or releasing a recently re-discovered episode for the very first time.

My top 5 Doctor Who stories with my favourite animation so far are…
    1) ‘The Invasion’ The first, and still the best. Cosgrove Hall started it all, and left a benchmark for others to follow.
    2) ‘The Moonbase’ Highly effective and atmospheric animation. Complements the other existing episodes brilliantly.
    3) ‘The Tenth Planet’ Nicely animated final episode.
    4) ‘The Reign of Terror’ Underrated animated episodes.
    5) ‘The Ice Warriors’ Good animation, if a little resemblance to Captain Pugwash.

Will definitely be buying this and the download and anything else in order to support it and then hopefully get another story animated for its 50th anniversary.

I would like Evil of the Daleks (50th next year), The Wheel in Space (50th 2018) and I’m not sure I’d want The Space Pirates (the only missing story not animated celebrating 50 in 2019) so maybe something like The Macra Terror. Then come 2023 I’d love Marco Polo for its 60th (if its not found by then haha)

I imagine this would be possible, 3 stories animated in 3 years. Fingers crossed this story does well to maybe make this possible…

problem with animating some of the stories, like master plan, is a lack of visual references. at least power has the telesnaps so sets, costumes and actors images are known. i wouldn’t mind if they made it up but a lot of fans would be “upset” because it won’t be accurate! also, no colour for me, these are made in black and white so that’s the way they should be. besides i imagine colour versions would be extremely expensive to make, not to mention how would the animators know what colours to use?

    Reply
    • Dr RevWho

      September 10th, 2016 - 11:44am

If you watch some of the interviews with the animators, they say that they use the camera scripts as reference to see how the episode would have been shot, allowing them to animate the episode with a general idea of how it would have looked, so it isn’t totally inaccurate. Besides, the only way you’d know for sure that it were inaccurate would be to check the actual episode – which is missing, hence the whole point of animating it. No one’s going to notice, unless they were there when the episode first went out, but since that was 50 years ago, or more, their memories of the episodes aren’t likely to be very precise.
But I agree with you on the point of colour episodes.

If I remember correctly, they still have a lot of the set design plans from Master Plan.

It’s an issue that has already come up with The Reign of Terror where a set didn’t have any images left. There’s a whole episode of Marco Polo with no visual material left.

If any missing story is out there somewhere collecting dust, waiting to be found, then the odds are stacked very much in favour of it being ‘Marco Polo’. As a lot of prints were sent out to several countries during the Sixties. Many more than ‘Enemy of the World’ or ‘Web of Fear’, and it’s something of a miracle they turned up, as they should have been long gone. I do find it staggering that although the bulk of seasons 1 & 2 exist, that not even one episode of ‘Marco Polo’ has been recovered over the last 30 years.

    • Dr RevWho

      September 10th, 2016 - 11:48am

What I find even more staggering is that ‘Marco Polo’ is one of three stories (the others being ‘Mission to the Unknown’ and ‘The Massacre’) where no footage whatsoever (whether it be clips or full episodes) survives. Considering that it was the ‘Doctor Who’ serial from the 60s that was most sold abroad, you’d think something would have turned up by now.

Historicals did poorly and were the first to be sent back and be destroyed.

Compare that to some of the Troughton monster stories, Philip Morris is investigating claims that a Yeti story (probably The Abominable Snowmen) had been secretly sold off to a Nigerian cinema chain because it was that in demand.

I am over the moon hopefully this will fit in for the rest of the classic DVD line it would be nice to the celestial toymaker animated part 4 isn’t lost and only part 1-3 would be animated so it would work but would the Daleks master plan work because it a 12 parter it would be about 20£ or £15 because it would cost to much to animate because it’s 12 parts and probably be 3 or 4 disc to the DVD here’s hoping they will animate all the missing stories and hoping they will be able to fit in with rest of the classic line

Well, 3 of the 12 episodes from ‘Daleks’ Master Plan’ are still around, but 9 episodes is still quite a lot to animate – although, considering that this story will certainly never be found completely (as ‘Feast of Steven’ was wiped immediately after transmission), it may be in with a chance. Even so, I doubt it will take up 3 or 4 DVD discs, since they could always do episodes 1-6 on disc 1 and episodes 7-12 on disc 2.

Personally I don’t think you can do mission without doing masterplan. It’s so connected with each other. Plus mission on its own isn’t really sellable on DVD. 13 quid for a 25 min main feature episode is a bit much. Perfect on the bbc store as an exclusive but I imagine there would be a lot of disappointed people. As for next evil is 50 in May next year. Perfect follow up project really if the sales are there.

    • Dr RevWho

I do agree that you’d almost certainly need to release ‘Mission’ and ‘Daleks’ Master Plan’ together, but, if ‘Mission’ ever did get a standalone release, I sincerely doubt the BBC would charge £13 for it, unless it had quite a lot of extras, which will probably never happen.
And yes, ‘Evil’ would be the perfect follow-up project since it is turning 50 next year, allows them to re-use the Dalek animations, and has 6 episodes missing (Episode 2 survives) same as ‘Power’. But I guess it all really depends on how successful ‘Power’ is. We will just have to wait until November to see.

Interesting question, in the case of evil where only one episode exists would people want that episode animated as well so you had a complete animated adventure?

    • Dr RevWho

      September 9th, 2016 - 9:01pm

It is an interesting question, and possibly plausible, I mean it would be kind of strange if the whole thing was animated bar one episode. Besides that, the surviving episode is available on DVD (although it would make things awkward if you wanted to see the non-animated version of ep. 2 and had to swap discs), so perhaps you could compromise; animate all 7 episodes, and include the live episode 2 as a bonus – that way everyone is satisfied. That being said, would the BBC really spend extra money to animate an episode they’ve already got? Personally, I doubt they would, but it is still an interesting idea.

is it too much to ask for them to animate episode 3 of the web of fear and release a special edition of it in a box set with the abominable snowmen which has also been animated in this style.

I don’t ask for much BBC just spend all you money on that to make me happy.

I think their money would be better placed helping Mr Morris track down Web 3, not creating replicas that hopefully shouldn’t be needed long term.

    • Tim M

      September 8th, 2016 - 8:09am

That’s a silly argument. It’s a sad fact that it is highly likely that there are no prints of ‘The Power of the Daleks’ that exist. Very few copies were made and distributed. That’s a good enough reason for this animation. There’s no point waiting in the hope that all six episodes turn up eventually, as that is very unlikely, unless Phil Morris can prove me wrong.

    • booboo

      September 8th, 2016 - 8:39am

I think they are referring to just episode 3 of the web of fear, not spending money on animating that, for now, as its possible its still “out there”

    • Tim M

      September 8th, 2016 - 8:35am

The same criteria could be applied to ‘The Daleks Master Plan’. Another story unlikely to be recovered, as no one bought it. So I wouldn’t hold out hope for that being found in it’s entirety.

    • Tim M

      September 8th, 2016 - 9:38am

We presume someone has ‘The Web of Fear’ episode 3. I don’t think anymore money would change the situation of recovery, unless you intend paying over the odds and paying whoever has it, huge sums of money. That wouldn’t be helpful, and that would set an unhealthy precedent.

      September 8th, 2016 - 3:08pm

If Philip Morris says Web 3 is out there that’s good enough for me. I’m not expecting them to pay over the odds to whoever got a hold of it, just to help TIEA out in their investigations.

    • LastOfTheSonics

      September 8th, 2016 - 4:27pm

Episode 3 WAS in Phil Morris’ possession at one time, but it was presumed stolen or a private collector offered a higher price. It definitely exists .

Each to their own, I guess. Personally, I generally prefer the sci-fi stories of the 60s as opposed to the historical adventures (exceptions made for ‘The Aztecs’, ‘The Time Meddler’ and possibly ‘Marco Polo’ and/or ‘The Romans’). That’s not to say they’re bad (the only ones I outright dislike are ‘The Massacre’ and ‘The Smugglers’), but they’re not everyone’s cup of tea.

  • Tim M

    September 7th, 2016 - 4:27pm

Dare I say it, but the trailer for the upcoming ‘Power of the Daleks’ looks like the best animation techniques ever used to represent classic Doctor Who. More of the same please. If this animation lives up to expectations, or even succeed them, then more stories must be an option for the same treatment. Another completely missing story would be ideal. ‘Fury from the Deep’ would be my choice, what would be yours?

Even if they do eventually animate ‘Marco Polo’, it is extremely unlikely that they would ever release it in colour – it was filmed and broadcast in black and white, so, like all the other 60s releases, it would be released on home media in black and white.

    • Tim M

      September 9th, 2016 - 7:55pm

It would be funny to think if all the missing episodes were animated. The Sixties era would be a mix of ‘live’ action and ‘cartoon’. But as the black and white Pertwee episodes have been re-colourised, the only way to restore the missing episodes would be to animate them.

Personally, if the BBC carry on animating stories, these are the stories I’d like to see them do do:

      -‘Marco Polo’
-‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’ (Favourite 1st Doctor story, preferably including ‘Mission to the Unknown’)
-‘The Celestial Toymaker’ (I think being able to see this one would make it much better)
-‘The Savages’ (highly underrated story imo)
      -‘The Evil of the Daleks’
      -‘Fury from the Deep’
-‘The Wheel in Space’ (complete the Cybermen collection)

    September 7th, 2016 - 3:53pm

I am looking forward to an newly release Doctor Who, the Power of the Daleks, completely animated. Let us at least be grateful that the BBC have kindly funded to produce six missing episodes to bring an old classic story.

I have been listening on audio, with a transcript from a website and I must say the story is brilliantly written.

But just keep an eye on it…..We will never know that they might delay as they did with the Underwater Menace. This might just a beginning to a Dr Who Animation Restoration for missing stories.

But I wonder why they didn’t fund to animate the Crusade? Probably the BBC has their reasons, I wonder. Who knows?

The reason given by one of the Restoration Team was that it features white actors playing non-white roles (including make up to make them resemble them).

While releasing historical content is considered reasonable, creating new content (such as an animation) featuring it could annoy certain groups so they have dodged the issue altogether by just leaving it as a telesnap reconstruction (which is better than most got).

    • Number 6

      September 7th, 2016 - 10:41pm

A telesnap reconstruction might be a better option, but fans would prefer animation because it is more better and also you can get to watch something that moves, rather looking at telesnaps. Remember the Underwater Menace? The telesnaps looked if was rushed and hardly got finished. No descriptions (telling what happening and who’s doing) and telesnaps are in wrong time.

They even didn’t add the surviving clips to make the episodes interesting. It was even worse than the Web of Fear Episode 3. I would like to see a well reconstruction episode like as the missing episode 4 of The Tenth Planet (which it was already made years ago.).

It would been better if they add the uncompleted animation of Episode 1 and 4 in special features on The Underwater Menace DVD, so that fans could get to see these and watch how far did the animators managed to complete. What do you think?

Next to zero work was done on menace. Very little worth showing

    • Who

      September 9th, 2016 - 6:07am

Due to the visual state of The Crusade (I mean they don’t look that great even after restoration), I’d actually be ok with them not choosing to animate the missing episodes for this story…telesnaps would be fine…or just leave it on the Lost In Time box as is…I don’t want to be a killjoy, but happy for The Underwater Menace to be left as-is too…mainly because the telesnap excuse of a reconstruction on the DVD release kind of killed it for me….especially since I heard that animation was well underway and scrapped for this story….

    • Tim M

      September 11th, 2016 - 8:28am

I do find it ironic, that the leaflet inside ‘The Underwater Menace’ DVD says on it’s first line, “This is as close as Doctor Who ever got to a cartoon”…and they subsequently didn’t animate it! For that statement alone proves it was ideal for animation. Missed opportunity I feel.

Because the Restoration Team have already said The Crusade won’t happen.

To be fair the dads army ep isn’t really sellable on DVD at this time. You can’t really sell it on its own as its only 30 mins and season 2 still has 2 missing episodes. There is a good chance those 2 may get animated in the future. If they get done I can see them going in that route of a season 2 dvd

I’m sure the BBC makes sure that every classic Dr Who has the same template. They might do similar ones to the recently DVDs, the Enemy and Web.

Don’t worry about the template, it should come as exactly as others.
