Doctor Who’s directors discuss the new TARDIS!

The latest Doctor Who Magazine includes an exclusive interview with all three directors of the forthcoming 60th anniversary specials – Chanya Button, Tom Kingsley and Rachel Talalay. In this revealing feature, they discuss the new TARDIS set…

Chanya Button: “Oh my gosh, it’s enormous. I mean, it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s sort of church-like in scale, and yet it’s also this intimate space that takes you from one place to another – to even larger, wider worlds.”

Tom Kingsley: “So much detail and love and thought has gone into it. You can point the camera anywhere at it and it looks amazing.”

Rachel Talalay: “I was around for the four months watching it being built. My DP [director of photography] and I were having all these conversations about how to light the wall roundels, and things like that, but I just kept thinking, ‘It will never be ready in time…’ So the fact that, in the last couple of days of my contract, we finally got on there, was amazing.”

Other highlights of the new issue include:

  • The DWM 60th Anniversary Poll – the analysis of the results begins, with this issue looking at the rankings of every story from the 1960s.
  • Liberation of the Daleks Part Six – the adventures of the Fourteenth Doctor continue in the epic comic-strip adventure written by Alan Barnes and illustrated by Lee Sullivan.
  • Letter from the Showrunner – Russell T Davies on writing the next series, exciting nights out and the hunt for silver glitter body spray.
  • Production Diary – script editor Scott Handcock files his latest report on the forthcoming episodes, direct from Doctor Who’s HQ.
  • Gallifrey Guardian – all the latest official news, including new cast announcements and executive producer Phil Collinson on Doctor Who’s involvement with Comic Relief 2023.
  • How Cleo Carried On – Cleo Sylvestre recalls the early years of her career, when she appeared in the 1965 story The Crusade.
  • Best Life – Moses Ogundeji reveals what it’s like to work as ‘best boy’ on the new series of Doctor Who.
  • Tea Time Terror – a look back at The Amazing World of Doctor Who, the 1976 book that’s about to gain a surprising new lease of life.
  • 60 Objects, 60 Years – from The Key to Time in 1978 to a Neo-Cyberman in 1982, the latest instalment of this series tells the story of one object from every year of Doctor Who’s history.
  • The Fact of Fiction uncovers the secrets of the acclaimed Twelfth Doctor adventure Flatline.
  • Other Worlds – the essential guide to forthcoming stories in Doctor Who’s expanded universe.
  • Previews, reviews, prize-winning competitions, Time and Space Visualiser and more.

First copy of DWM Ive bought since Tennant was the Doctor. Only bought it to see the poll results. No surprises there really. I’m bemused by the love for The War Games, which wouldnt get no more than a 4/10 from me. An ok first episode, great 9 & 10. But 7 other episodes that make Time-Flight feel epic. I’d rather have The Dominators .

Looking forward to the 70s issue. Gave all the Pertwees 9s and 10s apart from Monster Of Peladon, and quite a lot of early Toms got 9 and 10s. I’ve not read how theyre going to do thiss, but I’m assuming they’ll run the polls, then do another poll with all the Top 5 winners together ?

the problems is with big finish audios in the magazine it is always audios that i already got and the posters are good but i have only have so much wall space i used to like the a4 art cards that they did a few years ago as it didn t take up to much room

I’d rather they just did the magazine as it is. The extras you could send off for if you want them. Normal 11 issues of the year and special one for Xmas with extras for the extra £1 or so.

There weren’t supposed to be any free things with this issue were there? As the paper bag my copy came in was opened right across the top.

Or they thought there were free cards inside. They read it as ‘Inside….The Amazing World’

Looks very nice! Great they can still put the older Doctors on the front cover. That logo looks just so…’right’ placed there.

Not lining up the logo and the design boxes/text underneath is a really bad visual layout problem. Making my eyes bleed!
