Legacy DVD Shada / More that 30 years in The Tardis

Doctor Who Legacy (Shada) DVD

A double helping of ‘Doctor Who’ treasures. Never aired on television due to a strike in 1979, and never fully completed, the six-part adventure ‘Shada’ traces the chase to recover a powerful book, the Artifacts of Gallifrey, stolen from retired timelord Professor Chronotis (Denis Carey).

Skagra (Christopher Neame) is the evil despot responsible for this foul jiggery pokery. Original footage from this episode was used as the Fourth Doctor’s involvement in ‘The Five Doctors’, before it was reassembled, with an older and portlier Tom Baker narrating the missing gaps.

Also included is the BBC-produced documentary ‘More Than Thirty Years in the Tardis’, a compilation of clips spanning the first thirty years of the Doctor, including some never before seen on television, plus interviews with the many stars, writers, producers and designers.

The following features and quotes (via tv shows on dvd) are listed in addition to those shown below…

  • Shada – Flash version
  • Taken Out of Time
  • Now and Then
  • Strike! Strike! Strike!
  • Being a Girl Women in Doctor Who
  • Remembering Nicholas Courtney
  • Doctor Who Stories – Peter Purves
  • The Lambert Tapes – Part 1
  • Those Deadly Divas
  • Photo Galleries
  • Easter Egg
  • PDF materials: Radio Times Listings
  • Production Note Subtitles

New to DVD! Digitally remastered Doctor Who classic Shada! Written by Douglas Adams as his final contribution to Doctor Who, Shada was envisaged as a Time Lord story without a Gallifreyan setting. It sees the Doctor bringing Romana to present-day Earth to visit Professor Chronotis, an elderly Time Lord who absconded from Gallifrey and now lives a quiet academic life at St Cedd’s College in Cambridge.

Also seeking Chronotis is a scientist called Skagra who has a device, in the form of a floating sphere, with which he intends to steal the Professor’s mind and thereby learn the location of a book entitled The Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey. Skagra eventually succeeds in obtaining the book, which has been borrowed from the Professor’s study by a student named Chris Parsons. He then kidnaps Romana and hijacks the TARDIS.

Original VHS covers and information…

It was sixteen minute’s past five (Earth Time) on Saturday the 23rd November 1963, the day after the – assassination of President Kennedy, when Doctor Who first materialised on to BBC Television.

Squeezed in between the football results and the Telegoons, a legend was born’.

So, from humble flickering beginnings more than 30 years ago, began the eccentric Timelord’s crusade against evil. Now this fascinating documentary charts that remarkable career in time travel.

There are dozens of classic excerpts featuring all seven Doctors, clips from the wide-screen trailers of the two Dalek movies starring Peter Cushing, plus recently discovered material.

More than just a nostalgic birthday programme, unique documentary made specially, for BBC Video,

Archive gems

  • scenes from the missing 1965 Dalek episode DEVIL’S PLANET.
  • colour film of WILLIAM HARTNELL at a 1966 airshow, plus pictures from his own scrapbook.
  • Dalek creator TERRY NATION on WHICKER’S WORLD’ in 1968

Behind The Scenes

  • Action from the studio floor including CARNIVAL OF THE MONSTERS (1972), DEATH TO THE OALEKS (1973), THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI (1984), GHOSTLIGHT<1989)

  • Remembrance of the Daleks – Is there more to the Doctor?

All this plus two exclusive Doctor Who commercial breaks, spoofs by CRACKER JACK and SPIKE MILLIGAN. candid moments and bloopers from across the years, specially shot interviews and an all star cast of favourite Doctors, assistants and of course, monsters.

An ultimate celebration of the world’s longest running science fiction TV series, this special BBC Video includes footage from Thirty yaers in the TARDIS, originally transmitted on 29 November 1993.

SHADA.

The long forgotten adventure destined to bring the Doctor face to face with the evil Skagra and his master plan for total omnipotence.
Recording of this 6 part adventure in 1979 was sadly never completed until now – with the aid of Tom Baker, Doctor No. 4.

Now all available filmed and recorded sequences are linked by his brilliant narration allowing BBC Video to unveil Shada in its entirety at last.

When one of the Artefacts of Gallifrey – a dangerous book dating back to the time of the all-powerful Rasillon – goes missing from his study, Cambridge professor and retired Timelord Dr. Chronotis calls in the aid of the Doctor and Romano.

The Doctor is very worried. Who knows what powers could be unleashed if the book falls into the wrong hands? Then the mysterious Skagra arrives armed with a thought-draining sphere and a scheme for one universal mind. But first he must get hold of the book…

This unique pack contains a video and a copy of the original scripts – a great addition to the wealth of Doctor Who titles on BBC Video.

I normally put the spin offs, documentrys, ect at the very end of my collection then I put them into order of what years they were shown. E.g. K9 and company (1981) and then More Then 30 Years in the Tardis (1993).

has anyone else spotted that in TD,TW,ATW, the title sequence has been slightly altered. The MATT SMITH, and CLAIR SKINNER names are transparent, they also fade out instead of doing the swooshing affect. Also the doctor who logo fades in instead of suddenly appearing. just wanted to know if anyone else spotted this

Hardly lazyness. There was possible plans to include ian levine’s animated version but for various different reasons (lack of clearance cost of getting tom involved to voice his part for the gaps, cost of score getting done in the gaps etc) was turned down. The main problem is getting clearance from the adams estate for a new version of shada is very expensive and would in all likelyhood price it well out of the price range of an affordable dvd.

    • gordon

      December 15th, 2012 - 11:40pm

Also dan hall mentioned recently that a completed shada would be classified as creating new main feature content and creating new main feature content is the bbc’s remit not bbcworldwide who dan hall works for

      December 19th, 2012 - 1:07pm

Thats totally different. Thats got a completed sountrack. Shada doesnt. Therefore that would involve creating new sountrack for the missing parts therefore creating new main feature content

Are there plans at all for re-release of The Dalek Invasion of Earth and Earthshock? And has Dan Hall ever said what year doctor who dvd re-releases will stop from like 2006 or 2007 dvds at the latest (Claws of Axos 2006)

    Reply
    • gordon

      December 10th, 2012 - 1:12am

David banks has said he has done a commentary for earthshock but members of the restoration have no knowledge of a special edition of earthshock being planned or even being considered.(some think david was meaning a convention commentary). Not heard anything on DIOE but i tink its a fine release as it is. Dan hall hasnt given a cut off date but id expect inferno (june 2006) may be the point with possible exception of an often requested silver nemesis extended SE and dinos with ep1 in full colour if its possible in a few years time.

  • gordon

    December 8th, 2012 - 1:23am

Doubtfull that power of the daleks or evil of the daleks will get a release as dan hall said animation for anything over 2 episodes will be extremely unlikely

Seeing as the only unreleased stories where footage exists are shada, reign of terror, galaxy 4 ep 3, ice warriors, terror of the zygons, mind of evil underwater menace ep 2 and Tenth planet the release of tenth planet cant be that far away. it will be out by november at the latest

It is more than a rumour (dan hall has already confirmed ice warriors is getting a release next year)and the fact the trailer has been passed by the bbfc means it should not be too far away. There is a good chance the trailer could appear on the aztecs SE which would mean it could possibly be released soon as april 1st.

I hope not. I really want ‘The Tenth Planet’. I also hope the rumours about ‘The Ice Warriors’ being released next year is true.

I doubt that we’d be seeing ‘Power of the Daleks’ or ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ anytime soon. Which is a pity, coz’ I have both of those stories on Audio CD & they’re really good.

So they’ve confirmed Visitation re-release that’s good l always thought the cover for that release was a little too simple but of course extras are more important. I wasn’t expecting any more releases from Davisons era so this is great l hope they don’t release too many Special Editions specifically from 2004 onwards cause l have a few like the Pyramids of Mars and The Green Death from then.

    • Blake

      December 6th, 2012 - 8:17am

I believe that the underwater menace will have its own release by having the two missing episodes being animated

    • Lachlan

      December 8th, 2012 - 6:17am

Oh if that’s the case they could do the moonbase and the crusade, They’re not planning to do anything like The Dalek’s Master Plan obviously but l never thought they would do anything after Reign of Terror.

    • gordon

      December 8th, 2012 - 8:36am

Going by dan hall’s comments the anything over 2 eps missing will be extremely unlikely due to cost (the fact that galaxy 4 isnt getting animated and is only getting released as part of a recon and only as an extra is a telling sign that animation for 3 episodes is above their budget). Most you can expect is reign of terror, crusade, Mission to the unknown, tenth planet, underwater menace, moonbase and ice warriors but thats not a guarantee that all those will get animated releases
