BBC Studios can reveal artwork and extras for Doctor Who: Fury From The Deep starring Patrick Troughton as The Doctor. The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and Steelbook from 14th September 2020. Pre-orders are available now from Amazon, HMV and Zoom.

Following the success of existing animations The Power of the Daleks, The Faceless Ones, Shada and The Macra Terror, Fury From The Deep fills another gap in missing Doctor Who content lost in the purge of the BBC’s archive in 1975.

The three-disc release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy Fury From The Deep in high definition, either in full colour or in black & white. The release will include the surviving clips from the original 1968 production as well.

Fury From The Deep is told across six episodes and stars Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling. The storyline concerns a colony of sentient, parasitic seaweed, last seen in the eighteenth century, returning to attack a number of gas instillations in the North Sea in an attempt to take over humanity.

The reversible cover…

Animated episodes from Big Finish Creative Limited in association with Digitoonz Media & Entertainment and Thaumaturgy are joined by a wealth of exciting extras.

A making-of featurette ‘The Cruel Sea – Surviving Fury From The Deep’ sees original cast members Frazer Hines, June Murphy and Brian Cullingford revisit filming locations with production assistant Michael Briant, assistant floor manager Margot Hayhoe and helicopter pilot Mike Smith. Other contributors to this segment include writer Victor Pemberton and actress Deborah Watling. There’s also an archive audio interview with director Hugh David.

Additional material includes:

  • Audio commentaries
  • The Cruel Sea – Surviving Fury From The Deep
  • Original surviving footage
  • Behind The Scenes 8mm footage
  • Animating Fury From The Deep
  • Archive interviews with Peter Day and Victor Pemberton
  • Teaser Trailer
  • Photo Gallery
  • The Slide Audio Drama
  • PDF scripts

Not only have they started putting new releases in clear cases but newer pressings of the older titles are also coming in clear cases.
When I first got the Mara Tales box set, Time and The Rani and Paradise Towers they came in clear cases (although Paradise Towers had an old advert for the Doctor Who Experience for whatever reason).
For many months I had the missing episodes (the ones yet to receive an official release) as DVD-Rs containing the Loose Cannon recons and the surviving episodes from Lost in Time and The Aztecs special edition, and I put them in clear cases. After I finished the collection (well it’s kind of finished since I have all the main stories but I still need Scream of The Shalka and the Peter Cushing films) I brought a bulk of silver DVD cases from Ebay from a seller called tasha_traders_ltd (a UK based seller), they are a little expensive but it works out cheaper the larger the bulk you buy, The cases are good quality and are genuine Amaray. I brought the ones that have the little things for the swing treys (even for 1 disc sets), unfortunately silver swing trays are rarer then hens teeth so you’ll have to deal with clear ones. I would recommend you buy a slightly larger bulk then you need (for example you may need 20 so buy 25) so you have some spares and 1 or 2 might arrive damaged depending on your luck.

Just received my region 4 copy (Australia/New Zealand) – the cover is NOT reversible (new style only) and no booklet, just the three disks… which are all fully R2/R4 encoded.

Looks as though I’m back to importing the region 2 release just for the matching cover option.

Have really enjoyed the Fury from the deep animation, though there are compression issues in dark scenes in part six. Think this is due to the compression when the discs are sent to be made, or could it actually be in the original animation sauce material ? Just a technical query, if anyone knows.? And only more visible on a bigger screen TV. And blu Ray discs which is strange, as plenty of room for manoeuvre on blu rays. Good story though.
