Recovered and restored – a classic Patrick Troughton adventure!

The TARDIS lands on an Australian beach in the 21st century. But this is no seaside holiday – within minutes, the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria are under attack.

They soon discover that the Doctor bears a startling resemblance to Leader Salamander, a would-be dictator intent on world domination. Before long, the Doctor and his companions are plunged into a dangerous game of intrigue and deceit as they face off against the enemy of the world…

The standard and reversible covers…

BONUS CONTENT

  • Remastered episodes

Even though all episodes were restored in 2013 for the previous DVD release, Peter Crocker from the Restoration Team is using advances in technology since then to go over each one with a fine tooth comb to ensure they are now presented in the best possible quality for this special edition.

  • “Treasures Lost and Found” – produced by Ed Stradling.

With so much information now available about every Doctor Who serial, it’s not easy to learn anything new, so Toby Hadoke embarks on an exciting treasure hunt to find out all he can about the production. Along the way he’ll interview some of the cast and crew including Frazer Hines, Mary Peach and David Troughton – who made his first TV appearance in this serial as an extra.

  • “Recovering the Past – The Search for The Enemy of the World” – produced by Paul Vanezis.

A brand new interview with the episode hunter Philip Morris, we hear how he tracked down the last surviving film copy of the serial to a dusty room in the African desert.

  • “Remembering Deborah Watling” – produced by Cameron McEwan.

Family, friends and colleagues pay tribute to Debbie Watling who played Victoria Waterfield, companion to Patrick Troughton’s doctor.

  • Audio commentaries on all six episodes produced by John Kelly.

Contributors include Frazer Hines, Mary Peach, Gordon Faith, Milton Johns and Sylvia James. Moderator is Simon Harries.

  • Production subtitles on all six episodes written by Martin Wiggins.
  • Photo gallery produced by Derek Handley.
  • Scripts of all six episodes as PDFs.

The original artwork (left) was updated for the final release with changes made to the console control panel and levers by the Second Doctors Hand along with a few other minor edits. Most retail sites are still showing the old cover…

Was hoping that with complete episodes there might be a digitally remastered version of stories like for example “Planet Of The Daleks” after it was done with “Day Of The Daleks”.

Can we expect anymore missing stories in the near future, or has Phillip Morris found no more? He must surely be near the end of his global hunt. And if so, then on reflection it was still more than worth the effort. He did at least return 2 truly classic Troughton adventures.

My concern about the missing episode 3 is that without it’s recovery and restoration, the 16mm film print will erode, and be worthless to even the owner. Plus if it’s been played by whoever has the episode on a film projector, then the fragile film could well break, and be severely damaged. It doesn’t really bare thinking about!

…and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’s ‘The Web of Fear’. About as predictable as Missy being in the vault!

      February 8th, 2018 - 7:02am

Worth noting that it never specified what format that the next release was being announced for. Could just be the first tom Baker season on blu ray. It’s been heavily rumoured since before Christmas and a few American retailers did have a listing for it so I would not get too excited for it just yet

    • The Caretaker

      February 8th, 2018 - 7:30am

Tom Baker’s first season on Blu-Ray just doesn’t fill me with any Woo Hoo excitement, and hardly worth waiting with baited breath for. Seems utterly pointless anyway, I mean, those episodes weren’t made originally in HD anyway!

If ‘The Web of Fear : special edition’ was to be announced, and however as predictable as that may be, I would much rather that than Tom Baker’s first season on Blu-Ray.

    • Maxkenn

      February 9th, 2018 - 10:55pm

Yes I would! Time-Flight and Timelash don’t really bother me that much. The only special editions I won’t get are the episodes that are still missing.

I don’t buy any of the animated missing episodes because I know that one day we will find those missing episodes and the animation would’ve just been a waste.

    • Tim M

      February 10th, 2018 - 12:22pm

Well that’s ridiculous. You will have a very long wait for all the episodes coming back, and I’m afraid to say many will likely remain missing, and may well never come back, because they no longer exist.

    • The Caretaker

      February 8th, 2018 - 12:21pm

Although I enjoyed ‘Shada’ complete with animation, I didn’t enjoy as much in feature length format. I still think it should have been in episodic form. So for that reason I actually still prefer the 1992 version with Tom Baker’s narration.

  • The Caretaker

Can we also have ‘The Underwater Menace: Special Edition’ with animated episodes 1 and 4. Plus incorporate Professor Zaroff on the DVD cover too. Plus can we have an ‘Invasion of the Dinosaurs: Special Edition’ with episode 1 fully colourised the same way as episode 1 of ‘The Mind of Evil’. Thank you. ☺

They couldn’t colourise eps 1 invasion of the dinosaurs properly that’s why the b&w version is on the dvd. Can’t remember why but they did give a reason at the time

    • Duncan

      February 7th, 2018 - 8:32pm

I think it was something to do with coloured micro dots not being on the black & white film. So they did the best they could. The coloured episode is one of the extras on the disc. It’s ok but it wasn’t up to the standard of other recoloured episodes.

    • The Caretaker

      February 8th, 2018 - 8:04am

Stuart Humphreys (if I’ve spelt that correctly?) colourised episode 1 of ‘The Mind of Evil’ as that didn’t have Chroma Dots, and it looked amazing. I even reckon it’s the best colour restored episode in the whole story. So he could do wonders by restoring in full ‘Invasion of the Dinosaurs’ episode 1.

The Underwater Menace or The Web Of Fear would have been better choices, they should have animated the missing episodes from those two instead of releasing then as a bunch of photos.

    • Gordon

      February 7th, 2018 - 10:42pm

The problem with web is there is a good chance it’s showing up so there is hardly worth spending money on animating something that is a good chance of showing up. We don’t know if the animation unit is working on something else. They maybe busy at present. It’s not like this release takes away from something else they maybe animating. It’s not an either or situation. I’m just happy that there is more new releases coming out at this point

    • Anonymous

      February 7th, 2018 - 11:55pm

What do you mean a good chance? It’s extremely unlikely anymore will more will be found. Don’t think i don’t hope more will turn up, but it would be unfair to raise peoples hopes.

    • Gordon

      February 8th, 2018 - 12:27am

Phil Morris supposedly knows where web 3 disappeared to. When he found web all 6 eps were there. He’s threatened to name and shame who took it if it isn’t handed over

    • 1963

      February 8th, 2018 - 12:32am

It has been nearly 5 years since it was found. I would prefer it just to be animated and if it is “returned” it could just be a nice bonus on another dvd release.

    • Gordon

      February 8th, 2018 - 12:59am

That sounds terrible. That would involve watching 2 episodes changing the disc for episode 3 and changing it again for episodes 4-6. If there is a good chance of it turning up (and I still think there is a good chance of it) why spend time and money on animating something that could turn up when it could be better to animate something that has a lesser chance of being found

    • The Caretaker

      February 8th, 2018 - 2:14pm

They could release ‘The Web of Fear’ with animated episode 3 as a ‘Special Edition’… Then if episode 3 is later returned (and hopefully not become vinegar syndrome mush), ‘The Web of Fear’ could then be released as an ‘Extra Special Edition’. 🙂

Now that we have the extras list it has confirmed for me that i won’t buy it. Still, any new who for those who want it is no bad thing. As i say below, money is a big decider these days and there is nothing wrong with the original release for me, so happy not to bother. If as i say they release web with an animated episode 3 then I’d buy that, if they do a special edition using the reconstructed version with new extras then the same thing applies as with this, happy to stick to original.

Hopefully it comes with a reversible cover…but please can we not have the PG logos on the spine, like they did with ‘Shada’. Kind of spoils the overall look of the collection. If they do put the PG logos on the reversible cover, then frankly it’s pointless having a reversible cover. As on most peoples shelves, it will be the spine constantly displayed, and not the cover.

What makes you think it’s just a making of? It’s gonna be a 2 disc release so I doubt it’s just a 30 min making of. Unlike previous special edition releases it has to have substantial extras. It won’t really have a better restoration to fall back on as a reason to buy it as it already looks great

    • Demdike@CultLabs

      February 7th, 2018 - 10:07am

There’s only so much they can do as far as extras go for series from the 60’s due to i’m sad to say many of the personnel no longer being with us.

As for it being a two discer, that was inevitable as all six parters are two disc releases.

    • Anonymous

      February 7th, 2018 - 10:18am

The other 60s DVDs managed alright for extras…

    • Gordon

      February 7th, 2018 - 11:14am

3 documentaries commentary production notes and script pdfs. They managed more than you would think

  • Gordon

    February 7th, 2018 - 1:13am

I’m happy with this. Sure it would have been good to get something that hasn’t been released already instead however we don’t know what else is being planned I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It doesn’t take any animation time away from other projects so I don’t see the problem if we are getting something else on top of enemy. It’s a fairly easy release to produce compared with web or menace. Record a commentary. Write production notes and do 3-4 documentary’s. Job is pretty much done there. The picture quality of the original dvd is superb. I could see them skipping a new restoration if the gap isn’t significant enough of an improvement. It’s a harmless release. Not like we are being forced into buying it or anything

It flashed in my head, has it be colourised due to the colour cover, but they’d never do that way too costly, but it would be awesome. This is a welcome release anyhow.

I thought it was typically disingenuous of them to release Mind of Evil and Ambassadors with hand colourised footage. People don’t know they’re buying fake colour, if its only in black and white just leave it! Maybe they’ll find a real colour version one day and make us buy the dvd again….

    • Whorules

      February 7th, 2018 - 7:04pm

I don’t understand the above comment. The fact that they were colourised was made plain. Nobody was tricked into buying them. And then the person is saying they should have released black and white dvds and then complains that if colour versions were found we would have to buy them again when the bbc twists our arms to make us. It doesn’t make sense! We have them in colour. Be happy!

Surely the more logical thing to do would be Web of Fear SE with animated ep 3…? Perhaps that’s coming but the animation has delayed it slightly compared to Enemy. Also would be interested to see if this leads to an Underwater Menace animated SE (possibly as a box set with the Crusade and another like the Celestial Toymaker)

Another point about the original releases was that a lot of vocal fans demanded the release of the newly discovered stories straight away. I remember some very vocal demands at the time, including one guy who used a freedom of information request to find out the release dates! If they had more time we might have got proper releases at the time of the original dvds. You don’t have to buy it.

I didn’t buy all of the other special editions for the simple reason that it’s the episodes i want not the extras. Yes, this may have better picture quality, but i can’t afford to buy everything, especially when i already have it. Shada was different, it was a new version of the story. If they release web of fear with an animated 3rd episode or an animated underwater menace, then those I’ll buy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this shouldn’t be released, on the contrary I’m sure lots of people will be very happy with this and that’s great. Just not for me.
