These Daleks were the first time I encountered serious toxicity in the fandom. Not from everyone, but a very vocal minority were so bent out of shape over these Daleks that they viciously attacked the show and anyone who expressed approval of the new design. You only have to see the merch sales and merch produced and sold even after the design was prematurely retired to see how popular they actually were. Of course that toxicity pales in comparison to what would come ten years down the line but it was the first big break among fans I had experienced and the first time I’d seen the show itself cave to the toxicity. If you don’t like something, don’t watch it. Don’t set out to destroy it for those who do.
