The original VHS Cover for The Android Invasion…

When the TARDIS materialises just outside a sleepy English village, it appears the Doctor and Sarah Jane are nearly “home” at last.

But all is not as it seems in rural paradise. White suited, gun wielding guards stalk the countryside, while the village itself is eerily deserted.

As the Doctor and Sarah look on, a UNIT member leaps over a cliff to his death and, as the clock strikes twelve, the local pub is suddenly filled with strangely robotic villagers.

The UNIT member is amongst them, very much alive. What exactly is happening here?

The Doctor is mystified, setting off for UNIT HQ in search of the answers. There, with the Brigadier away, Senior Defence Astronaut Guy Crayford holds court.

But just who is his shadowy master, the Thraal, Styggron? Indeed, who are the Thraals and what have they got in store for the Earth? Why has the TARDIS dematerialised seemingly of its own accord?

The Doctor must move quickly to find the truth, for the very future of mankind hangs in the balance… Originally transmitted 22 November -13 December 1975, this four part story starring Tom Baker as the Doctor and Elizabeth Sladen as his assistant, was the last UNIT adventure for fourteen years, until “Battlefield” with Sylvester Me Coy in 1989.

The original VHS Cover for The Invasion of The Dinosaurs…

Arriving back on modern-day Earth, the Doctor and Sarah discover London is deserted and under martial law.

They eventually find an army patrol, but are arrested as looters, and are sent to a detention centre as prisoners.

But as their journey begins, their transport comes under attack by a tyrannosaurus rex. Dinosaurs have invaded London!

UNIT has been called in to assist the army with the running of the city, and to try and find a solution to the problem.

Released from captivity, the Doctor takes up his old role of UNIT’S scientific advisor in order to help try and discover why dinosaurs keep appearing and disappearing from London’s streets.

The Doctor suspects a deliberate plan is causing the dinosaur menace, but who is behind the scheme?

Who amongst his allies can be trusted? And when Sarah vanishes, just how does she find herself on a spaceship carrying hundreds of people in suspended intimation towards a new life on a distant new earth. This story was broadcast on BBc1 between 12th January and 16th February 1974

10th planet and ice warriors are in production but whether or not they are getting annimated 2e and the restoration team arent telling. I am expecting at least the ice warriors as nothing visual exists. 10th planet already has a fair chunk of bits and pieces of ep 4 so they might just do a restruction and reuse the vhs version. As for wheel in space i will believe it when i see it.

No news yet on when The Mind of Evil will be released, might be 2012?, i don`t know, but it looks like the restorations problems may have been solved!?. Don`t raise your hopes just yet, we`ll have to wait and see.

Its being held back until 2013 the last i heard. There is already about 15 new titles apparently getting released in 2012 (according to dwm back in may) which is a full year of releases. They are going to struggle to fit any more releases on that list i reckon.

      which dvd releases are they?

      October 13th, 2011 - 11:07am

Although its only a provitional list(its not final) this is the list for 2012 as listed by dwm back in may.(ive excluded revisitations 3 and vengance on varos se as they are classified as new releases of old titles and are counted as extra releases and are not appart of the main schedule.

      Sensorites
      reign of terror
      planet of giants
      krotons
      death to the daleks
      terror of the zygons
      android invasion
      face of evil
      nightmare on eden
      Ace tales (dragonfire/happieness patrol)
      Greatest show in the galaxy

Obviously invasion of the dinosaurs and daemons have been confirmed as well which makes it 14 new titles for 2012 (same number as 2011)
Out of those 14 titles there really isnt that much oppertunity of box sets (appart from unit and ace sets of course and possibly a reign of terror/planet of giants as they are next to each other) which makes the schedule pretty full and not much room for anything else to be added (well unless they want to do some box sets that have very little to do with each other ie another earth story when they paired gunfighters and awakening)

Remember how I did say the list was provitional. Well classic doctor who twitter page has confirmed: to stop the rumour here and now, zygons is not scheduled for 2012. Too much great content to fit in that year.

    • gordon

      October 13th, 2011 - 4:43pm

2012 but i didnt include that in that list as its classified as an extra release as its a new release of an old title and doesnt count towards the main schedule.

More information: It looks like The Restoration problems on The Ambassadors of Death may have been solved!?, and may be released with The Sun Makers in a Boxed set Entitled “The Solar System”, in 2012. Fingers Crossed!!

No its not coming out in a solar system box set! It was originally planned for ambassadors and sunmakers to be in a box set called solar system that was canceled due to ambassadors being delayed. Sunmakers is already out so this boxset wont happen.

Rekease date for The Sensorites in the Uk, in Region 1 is 14th February 2012. The Boxed Set Revisitations 3 is 13th March 2012 in Region 1. And it looks like The Daemons may be released in April 2012, also in Region 1, but has yet to be confirmed.

I posted that info last week.

Sensories will be released in either 30 jan 6 feb or 13 feb most likely

Revisitations 3 will most likely be coming out 27 feb or 5 march or 12 march.

There will also be a march release (revisitation3 doesnt take up march slot as its an extra release) most likely ace tales (which would mean april for region 1).

Then it would probably be nightmare in eden in the middle of april(as aprils release) followed by daemons in 30 april which would make it mays uk release.

Or it might be ambassadors of death but that might not happen. There is a chance of it being Vengeance on varos SE though. I hope it’s Death of the Daleks.

    • gordon

      October 10th, 2011 - 11:35pm

I dont think it will be ambassadors of death as steve roberts of the rstoration team was quoted as saying 2 weeks ago that ambassadors isnt ready which more or less rules that one out. No chance of it being vengance on varos as its a revisit title and is classified as an extra release and doesnt affect the main scheduled releases which rules that out as march main release. Death of the daleks hasnt got its extras finished so it wont be that. Only 2 real canditates for march are ace tales and nightmare in eden as both have been ready for months

This is whats happening with Episode 1 richard. The restored default version of episode 1 will be in black and white but a partial colour version will be available as an extra. The colour version is said not to be up to 2e high standard thats why its not the default and is an extra. What was supposed to happen was legend (same people that did ep 3 of planet of daleks) was going to reolour ep 1 but costs have risen to the point it was far outwith the budget. So the restoration team did colour recovery on it but no blue came out of it.

    • gordon

      September 20th, 2011 - 11:39pm

Peter crocker of the restoration team then painted in some blue wherever possible. Its not going to be perfecect but its better than nothing.

As ive mentioned in a previous post lewis the most likely release date for the unit box set is 9 january due to the fact that the us release date is tueday 10 january and it fits in with the us globalisation deal that means the us dvds are released just after the uk but at the moment NOTHING HAS BEEN CONFIRMED! Im also not expecting a uk release date to be announced till at least late october. One guarentee it will be out before the us release date of 10 jan.

They really should have made it into the Sarah Jane boxset instead of UNIT, as a tribute after her tragic death. After all, Invasion of the Dinosaurs and The Android Invasion both feature Lis’s character.

UNIT box set was well into production and the name was set at the time of her death. I do see your point though. I believe they didnt want to change the name as they thought some people would think that they only changed the name to cash in her death.

    • Mr_Moley

      September 20th, 2011 - 8:31am

Besides, as Nick Courtney also died this year, having it a UNIT box is a tribute to both of them 🙂

    • gordon

      September 20th, 2011 - 11:58pm

Its not a tribute to either one of them. 2e and restoration team dont do dvd or box set releases as a tribute or dedication. What 2/e and rstoration team do as a tribute is do a documentary on their life ie the upcoming documentary Doctor Who Stories: Elizabeth Sladen Part 1 which will be found on the dinosaurs dvd and along with part 2 will be their tribute to her.

  • Mr_Moley

    September 19th, 2011 - 11:03am

I’m a little surprised after Day of the Daleks that they didn’t give Dinosaurs the CGI treatment and replace some of the puppets. IMO, and although we’re used to low budget in the classic episodes, this story would have been improved greatly by replacing the dinosaur scenes with enhanced animations.

      we dont know

    • Radburn

      September 19th, 2011 - 9:30pm

There is a strict budget for the DVD releases:

Daleks sell well so obviously the budget for Day Of The Daleks was higher with the re-mastered version & original in the set.

Discussions did take place over possable CGI for Invasion Of The Dinosaurs but was dropped due to budget restrictions. Personally I think this was short-sighted by the BBC. With the past few years being very dino saturated with the BBC’s own Dinosaur series, plus the success of Jurassic Park & series like Primeval – I think they should have gone down the 2-disc set route..

    • Gordon

      September 20th, 2011 - 12:02am

Wasnt just budget restrictions even though that was one of the main reasons. Some of the dinosurs have contact with humans and objects that would have been extremly difficult and nigh on impossible to digitally remove then reincert the new effects in some parts (day of the daleks didnt have this problem). Even if that wasnt a problem the cost of it would run to a hollywood budget (not feesable on a dvd budget).

    • Radburn

      September 20th, 2011 - 4:34am

With all those US dollars being splashed out on the fantastic Torchwood I’m sure they could have diverted some into the Dinosaurs release – It’s already being advertised in the US before any details have been released here…

    • Mr_Moley

      September 20th, 2011 - 8:29am

Fantastic Torchwood? You must have been watching a different version to me then 😉

    • gordon

      September 20th, 2011 - 12:10pm

It was stars that put up most of the money for torchwood. BBC actually only put forward a small part of that budget. Even ifthe budget was there for cgi dinosaurs and it was possible i still would be doubtfull about it due to the cost of recolouring ep 1. They wanted to use legend (same company that did planet of the daleks ep3) but there cost has risen so sharply it just wasnt feesable( They did their own colour recovery but there was no blue which they have done their best to paint in).And out of choice of a full coloured episode 1 or cgi

    • gordon

      September 20th, 2011 - 12:24pm

dinosaurs they would go for full coloured episode 1 as after all the team that rstores them are called the restoration team. Plus another thing: for 2e to make money out of it(after all thats why they make the dvds) they would have to price it way higher than normal dvds. We are looking at least 20 or 30 quid each more to make up their budget and that would be even if it was a huge seller

    • Radburn

      September 20th, 2011 - 6:49pm

Mr_Moley: I was being ironic about Torchwood. I would be very surprised if it got a new series after the drivel of ‘Miracle Day’

Gordon: I actually prefer the original version of Dinosaurs & would just be happy with a restored colour copy – But I would still liked to have seen a revamped optional extra version?

why was it supposed to be destroyed

    • booboo

      September 17th, 2011 - 5:53pm

The BBC ordered its destruction like may many back then, Videos were not heard of and they needed space, there was no thought to potential future sales as what we take for granted today did not exist back then. and its only by luck and finds abroad that we see what we see today . that’s whey so may b/w stories are missing, they would be worth hundreds of 1000s of pounds in sales now – its not so long ago that Tomb of the Cybermen was thought lost forever

    • Anonymous

      September 17th, 2011 - 5:59pm

Actually videos did exist, although it was very primitive and many people believed it would never take off in the home market so they were wiped. In the case of the Pertwee episodes however it is normally that they sent the masters to the US to be converted from PAL but they just believed them to be copies and wiped the master copies!

Also the current reward price is about £2500 (or one of the Dalek props it’s up to the fidner).

    • booboo

      September 17th, 2011 - 6:07pm

I should have made it more clear that mass market domestic video recorders did not exist and people saw no market for them, i bought the very first “mass market” betamax video recorder, must have been about 1980, cost £399 which was a fortune back then, it was huge, no remote and awful quality.

There were a few out there though, the head of BBC drama had mentioned having been provided a prototype in 1974 and believed that soon “everyone would have one” and that it would be possibel to sell programmes or rent them out. Unfortunately the BBC is a pretty big company and drama was seperate from the archives so he would of had no influence over them.

      The Hand of Fear

I would say ark in space and possibly green death and aztecs are about the only stories i feel need revisiting as ark the picture quallity isnt so good compared with newer releases and it needs a making of. Green death is only missing a makng of and aztecs is only needing a pictre quality improvement which would prob not be enough of a reason of a revisitation.

As for the choices suggested i feel earthshock and time wont look much better have decent extras and have cgi and just dont need revisited. Only thing missing robot would be cgi robot

and that alone wouldnt be enough of being revisited. War games looks great has chock ablock full of extras and defo doesnt need revisted. Hand of fear only ting i feel they can add is a doc on liz life but as there is a 2 part doc on her life (part 1 is on the dino dvd)on upcoming releases it kind of makes a revisit pointless. Planet of the spiders was only released in april 2011 which makes a revisit pointless.

Everything 2|entertain has released isn’t worth revisiting. I’d say The Aztecs, The Ark in Space and probably Horror of Fang Rock or The Claws of Axos which are very sparse in terms of extras.

      i would choose

      the ark in space
      the aztecs
      the daleks invasion of earth

Cant see 2e releasing 2 box sets in a row. Can see it being nightmare on eden and pssibly sensorites before ace set as the artwork has been done for nightmare and sensorites and the ace box set artwork hasnt been done. Cant see ambassadors be out early as march as steve roberts of the restoration team says its nowhere near ready

Obviously subject to change of course:

Ambassadors has been put back at least 4 times I think & the current Ace Boxset may be nudged as well – It’s my understanding that the BBC want to release the rest of what’s available by the end of 2012 – But I don’t think it will be possable? Would definately be happy with the Sensorites/Nightmare and have seen pre-animation of the re-constructed Reign Of Terror. Hoping they continue the trend with Tenth Planet, Ice Warriors & maybe Shada?

      September 18th, 2011 - 1:02pm

Going into 2012 including these 2 There is 19 titles excluding revisitations to go. And there normally about 16 titles released per year. Certainly not impossible if they do a couple of more box sets. Shada has been completed with animation by fan who owns the rights to it ian lavine but whether or not a release of that version of shsda is down to 2e and dan hall.

Gordon what does the new artwork for The Sensorites look like?

    • gordon

      September 19th, 2011 - 1:52am

Havent seen it yet but dan hall posted on the classic doctor who twitter page that he signed off the artwork for it. Shouldnt be too long.maybe next couple of weeks when the february american release or releases get announced. America always seems to announce their dvds about 4 months in advance

      at gordons first comment…

they released the boxsets ‘The E-Space Trilogy’ and then ‘The Rescue / The Romans’ just after that!

      October 10th, 2011 - 12:14am

That was down to an paperwork error. It was originally planned e space then attack of the cybermen but due to some paperwork with attack being missed it was swapped round in the schedule. But i was correct about ace tales not comming out in february though. As sensorites has been confirmed for february in america and revistations 3 titles confirmed as march american releases there is no chance of ace tales in february. Ace tales will Probably be out late march or early april at a guess at the moment

But the daemons is due for release in April.

    • gordon

      October 11th, 2011 - 1:27am

As daemons is probably going to get releasesd on 30 april (to coincide with beltaine)in the last day of the month that would then cross over into mays uk release. That leaves nothing currently scheduled for release in march and april (revisitations 3 is an extra release which excludes it as the march release). Seeing as ace tales has been ready for months i expect that to fill either march or april and nightmare in eden filling in the other gap as thats also been ready for months

Almost? Many of the classic stories are far superior to the modern version. Many people just suffer from recentism.

this year I properly got into the classics. Can’t really judge yet which is better although I’m not a fan of the RTD era and prefer Moffat to him. I suggest you watch the sea devils doesn’t feature lis sladen but it’s my fave classic story that I’ve watched so far also watch an unearthly child the first ever story. It’s nice to see how it all started.

king of weevils i’ll look out for dvds of them episode and the first episode would be very intresting to see although it would be very strange in black and white!
