The classic Doctor Who story, abridged by James Goss from his original novelisation of the 1979 episode by Douglas Adams and David Fisher.

Meet the new Doctor Who classics.

The key to Earth’s destruction lies buried in its past.

Visiting Paris in 1979, the Doctor and Romana’s hopes for a holiday are soon shattered by armed thugs, a suave and dangerous Count, a plot to steal the Mona Lisa and a world-threatening experiment with time.

Teaming up with a British detective, the Time Lords discover that a ruthless alien plot hatched in Earth’s pre-history has reached its final stage. If Scaroth, last of the Jagaroth, cannot be stopped then the human race is history, along with all life on Earth…

This is the only book in the collection I want. ‘City of Death’ is an all time favourite story of mine.

I have just read this version. I think the story is better. Than its first release. Not much cut out. It’s tightened it up. This is the best version by James gross. The story flows more easily. It’s a great read.

Love the cover but I don’t like the inclusion of the names of Douglas Adams and David Fisher. They didn’t write the book and it’s different to all of the other novelisations over the years (apart from Shada and Pirate Planet). I’m guessing it’s a contractual condition, perhaps? I do feel that the book titles should be larger too!

Of all the April releases, if I had to pick one title to buy, this’d be it.

The fact that it is an abridged version was included in the original announcement. I’d have preferred a straight reprint myself, but I’m going to get this as I’m a book collector.

I shall try and follow the DVD reading this, to see how faithful it is. Looking forward to it.

This has been out for 3 years now. This version is just shorter. Mind i never was bothered by whether a target book was faithful to the original story. Often those that were tweaked were the best ones. I found this novel close enough to be recognised but different enough to be interesting. Just be interesting to see how much is cut.
