What links Stingray to Space: 1999? Which superstar director had a hand in *batteries not included? Who was Pierre Boulle and how did he spawn one of Hollywood’s greatest franchises? All the answers, and much more, are revealed in Sci-Fi Chronicles.

From Barbarella to Blade Runner, this comprehensive guide to science fiction explores the creation and evolution of the genre’s greatest creations, detailing their complex real-world and in-world development through an arresting blend of incisive commentary and stunning archive imagery.

Arranged alphabetically, each entry examines the myriad expressions of a much-loved sci-fi title — from book to movie to television series, and beyond. Expert writers offer entertaining overviews, and colour-coded infographic timelines provide an at-a-glance guide to landmark publication, release and broadcast dates.

For key franchises — such as Doctor Who and The War of the Worlds — lavish photo-spreads reveal how they have evolved from their black-and-white beginnings to today’s big-budget blockbusters. And seminal, genre-defining sagas, like Star Wars and Star Trek, are accompanied by fascinating chronologies of how each work fits into the series’ fictional universe.

On the Engines Of War book, if you look closely at the dalek on the left side of the doctor (or should I say the war doctor), it looks like a new special weapons dalek

      Yeah, clearly Photoshop.

I’m not keen on it. Don’t get me wrong thou, I’m not against the idea of a modern Special Weapons Gunner Dalek, but it could have at least looked like something that was designed rather then just something that clearly shouts “PHOTOSHOP !!” right at your face when you look at the cover.

      May 2nd, 2014 - 12:40am

They should do more stuff like that with the Daleks, make them have different abilities and looks. Maybe some could have Dr Octopus like arms or something. Various add on weapons, just make them more interesting. I’ve never actually believed that a race with just a plunger for an arm could ever actually get anywhere!

Engines of war looks absolutely fantastic. Although I hope if they are going to release more war doctor books, they aren’t all going to be about war (sounds a little silly considering he’s the war doctor but it will get really repetitive)
Is there any possibility of the war doctor on audio?

      May 1st, 2014 - 4:17pm

Given that he spent his entire life fighting the Time War (save for the brief break in The Day of the Doctor and even then that was ultimately part of the war) there is absolutely no reason why he would ever be doing something else.

And he won’t be on audio, not for as long as Big Finish won’t do modern stuff. The restriction is self imposed, they have been offered to do modern stuff plenty of times but won’t.

    • Some bloke

      May 1st, 2014 - 6:06pm

But it might be a sort of Blakes 7 scenario, where he has to go around bringing down different dalek bases, destroy there weapons factories, prevent biological warfare, that sort of thing! I think that’d be ok 🙂

Will Peter Capaldi’s run as the Doctor air in July…? As the 2015 calendar comes out in July so how is the calendar going to work? Because if Capaldi’s air runs throughout August/September them it would be virtually impossible to get decent pictures of him unless, they were filming pictures or perhaps pictures from a photoshoot?

I won’t bother watching Series 8, but I will definitely read the Twelfth Doctor novels.

“Engines of War” will be a past doctor novel, in the same format as “The Wheel of Ice” and “Harvest of Time”. It could feature any of the first eleven doctors. Personally, I hope that it features the Ninth Doctor, since he has the least novels (only six).

      April 27th, 2014 - 12:20am

I never watch Doctor Who episodes when they are broadcast. I will watch series 8 eventually, but not until at least early next year. In recent years, I have been put off watching Doctor Who television episodes by the severe lack of quality of the scripts. For example, early last year, I was surprised to learn that a fiftieth anniversary special had been commissioned. When I finally got round to watching the special, after boycotting the simulcast, earlier this year, I’d wished the BBC had never even bothered.

You know every so often they release newly written, quite big, hard-back stories for classic Doctors? (e.g. ‘Wheel of Ice’ was released as a Second Doctor story) – I’d love to see a newly written Seventh or Sixth Doctor story of that kind. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that ‘Engines of War’ might just be what I am looking for.

    • Sam Bentley

      April 5th, 2014 - 10:50pm

They released ‘Shroud of Sorrow’ before Clara’s first proper appearance in The Bells of Saint John. And there were a few Eleventh Doctor audiobooks released before The Eleventh Hour aired – so it is highly possible that this could be a 12th Doctor book.

    • Melkur

      April 6th, 2014 - 9:21am

I looked up ‘Shroud of Sorrow’ and it says it was first released on the 8th April 2013, whereas ‘Bells of St John’ aired on March 30th. Besides, Clara did appear the year before. Did it get an accidental early release, is that what you mean’t?

Personally i think a 12th Doctor novel in July is very unlikely, the author would have to understand the characterisation of the 12th Doctor before writing a novel, otherwise you are steering blind.

I’m hoping it i s a Time War based novel, either with an older 8th or our very first War Doctor novel.

Interesting? As this info is so far in advance I presume it is subject to change?

I would be surprised if the ‘Dr Who The 11th Book 1’ at a 128 pages for a Graphic Novel will be Hardback – More like Softcover?

I’ve seen 7 eshorts listed against ‘Time Trips’ with some unusual authors – So I’m looking forward to the Complete Collection

’12 Doctors, 12 Stories’ Tut! Tut! I’ve bought the book once – I’m not buying it again thank you very much!

The 3 ‘Untitled Season 8 Tie-Ins’ are listed as Paperbacks – Have they changed the Hardback format

This is aimed at the North American Market but should be available in the UK.
