Personally i dont think this will be the final cover
Now hear me out on the back usually has villains on the back and some friends aswell but we have nothing on there from wild blue yonder so I think after it airs I think we will get it updated with things from that story

I much prefer the normal Blu-ray cover by Lee Binding as DT doesn’t look quite right.

The robot from the trailers could habe been on the back of the steelbook. It could be changed though.

That’s what I do. Always order the Steelbook online, but i origionaly started the DVD collection years ago however can’t bring myself to stop collecting them for completist sake. So I’ll buy the standard DVD a month or so down the line usually from a HMV store on a whim when im in there. Good to keep supporting the physical stores too.

Perhaps because it’s only a comedy skit, rather than a proper mini episode? They can always put it on another release, assuming it’s cleared. The other possibility is that it just wasn’t ready when the discs were authored.

I can understand it being too late to add to the discs so hopefully it may be on the next set even if it doesn’t fit.

December 18th 2024 is now listed as the release date on Amazon. I’m wondering if it will be released the 18th of next month, as first thought?

I’ve had a “new release date” email from Amazon too stating that date

I expect someone has keyed it in wrong – and it will be 18th December 2023 – which is a Monday – so seems to fit

Even if its not 18th Dec 2023 – I doubt it will be much beyond January 2024 at the latest when this comes out

Unfortunately Twice Upon A Time in 4K didn’t do great sales back in 2018. They know how many people buy Who on Blu-ray too.

Also it can be said it’s exclusive to iplayer.

    • AlbertoFrog

      November 22nd, 2023 - 3:36pm

I think you might be right, daz. Seems odd to base sales predictions on the success (or not) of a release from five years ago, particularly when interest (and number of titles) has increased a LOT for 4K in those five years.

    • Rex F

      November 22nd, 2023 - 10:39pm

They need to see significant interest. A few thousand email requests for a 4k version might help. Or a US release next year if the eps are a big streaming success (since BBC only do 24fps 4k releases worldwide).

They may have realised the original release date was two days after the UK broadcast of the last story in the set.

Since people get review copies a week or two before release and many copies arrive in the post on the Saturday before the Monday release day, they’ve put the release forward to avoid/minimise leaks of the unbroadcast story(ies) and maximise on broadcast and i-player viewing figures.

The additional content on here seems a bit lacking for me, unless there are some secret items not listed. For instance the 50th anniversary had An Adventure In Space & Time, The 5ish Doctors Reboot and the 8th Doctor’s return in Night Of The Doctor. This seems to all be behind the scenes stuff.
There is a documentary on BBC 4 on Wednesday that could have been included, and the mysterious items teased for the 17th and 23rd of November… but we shall see I suppose.

The 50th release though came out months afterwards and not 2 days after the final special. This one is purely about those specials.

There is an episode of Imagine -The Doctor and Me with RTD that hasn’t got a broadcast date yet which might be the 17th of November one.

The BBC4 Documentary Talking Doctor Who is only about classic who so I can see that being put on the Season One Collection Set eventually and the 60th Music concert could end up on the Series 14 set.

I doubt it. There were a handful of 4K releases from the BBC a few years back (Twice Upon and Time, Sherlock Series 1 to name a couple) and no more were ever released. Which is a shame as I’m a big 4K collector myself. As you say no 4K for Power was ever released, even though it had 4K streaming. So my guess would be it will be Blu-ray only.

If you are producing New Who in 4K then let us buy it please, us fans will buy everything

    • Rex F

      October 30th, 2023 - 2:59am

Fans didn’t buy Twice Upon A Time. If all the numbers, including typical BD/4K sales ratios, are saying it’s not worth the effort, then they aren’t going to bother. So the BD needs to sell brilliantly, and it might be worth people contacting the dvd enquiry email to say that they only passed on Twice because it was an upscale (HDR alone just wasn’t enough). Then the 4K would have to sell quickly, and I get the feeling that most people don’t like to upgrade too soon after a Blu purchase. So probably best to ask for the next release to get a simultaneous 4K (the Xmas special).

    • Rory

      October 30th, 2023 - 10:28am

@rex F, I suspect that part of the problem with TUAT may also have been that it was relatively early in the life of 4K. At that time, most of the people I knew who bought 4K were cinephiles, and the selection in shops was very small compared to BD and DVD. There seems to have been a greater adoption in recent years, so it may have become more viable.

Thought they would, stick the toymaker animations on here. But the different release equals more profit to plug bag into other animations

    Reply
    • Perplexed

      October 27th, 2023 - 7:31am

Is that the unconfirmed rumour-only-at-this-point Toymaker animation you refer to? The one that IF it is to be animated has nothing to do with the current production of specials (other than a returning villian). Why would it not have its own separate release beforehand? Have the animations ever been released on New Series titles before? What a curious expectation….

    • James

      October 27th, 2023 - 10:15am

Perplexed. Well the collection box sets included SJA adventures episodes of the doctor. As its the 60th anniversary would make sense to add it into this set. Or maybe a trailer (coming soon…).
It does have to do with the production as its the return of a villain which hasn’t appeared for almost 60 years. The 3 specials are to do with this villain. Just be a nice added extra.

But as I said make sense also to make it a separate release as this profit would be plugged back into the other animations going on.

Macra animation could not be on series 3 as it wasn’t done yet. The yetis haven’t appeared in NuWho so wouldn’t be on any set (web/abominable).

Plus younger fans who watch NuWho who may not have seen classic or buy would get to see it.

    • Gareth Pugh

      October 29th, 2023 - 11:00pm

The animations require large teams in a number of countries to work for many months (in some cases) and their salaries need paying. For that reason, the teams behind the animations have said in the past each animation needs to receive its own standalone release first in order to contribute to recouping the costs (as well as funding from BBC Studios -and other sources). They said at the recent BFI event for the Underwater Menace that where animations have already been done and released previously, they WILL appear on ‘The Collection’ series box sets. But there’s no way BBC Studios can afford to make them and just give them away as a ‘nice extra’ on things like the 60th Specials release.
They just take too much time and money for that to be the business model.

This is already well documented. COVID, the war in iraq, plastic prices, printing press’s from abroad are all factors. The S.E’s of the collections are where the money is, that’s where the return in investment comes from for the BBC.

The new episodes will generate quick income – by proven and shared matrix, David tennant sells – he is a trusted commodity, whether you like it or not isn’t up for debate. Stick his face on ANYTHING and fans new & old will buy, that revenue then allows BBC to invest in other doctor who projects. This metric came from BBC surveys with fans, it showed that david and Paul mcgann are the most lucrative of the doctors over the last few years – thats why davids back!! not just cause “it will be fun” but for the BBC and Disney+, he is a money printing machine. get the blu ray out when the buzz of the 60th is fresh – smart

Blu ray is NOT a dying format, the “streaming era” is starting to come full circle with countless movies/tv etc stuck behind subscriptions and pay walls or not available due to legal/licensing issues, blu ray will be around for years to come so lets just be grateful for what we get eh?

      @alphabets
Great way of putting it that the “streaming era” had come full circle. Many people see streaming as the future, but we’ve just passed the best point it will ever be — sure, streaming models will changed and improved, but other ways to watch media aren’t going to die because of streaming. Already, there’s been a recent weariness towards streaming models — constantly rotating catalogues but never anything good, too many competitors when all the good things are exclusives. As a result there’s been a bit of a recent rise in non-streaming media watching, with piracy definitely becoming more popular for gen z. But, like how vinyl collecting is a surprisingly large market even when Spotify exists, there’s still appeal for opening your favourite media. Blu ray isn’t going to die out before the collection range has made back it’s money.

@ben, quite right. The other issue we will see is it will become impossible to have everything “on demand” as the price of these streaming services will just go higher and higher and they will become more and more excusive as the companies withdraw their films/tv from other platforms in favour of their own new platform.

It will be come a streaming world of “pay as you watch” rather then annual subscriptions. I only buy 2-3 months of netflix a year, to cover halloween-xmas, that’s when the good stuff normally shows up for me, anything outside that date range gets watched within the 3 months and then I let it cancel itself. The only exception being Disney+ for me as i watch it almost daily.

The good thing about Disney+(for now) is that its still relatively cheap for what you get, essentially 5 separate streaming channels with new content, not just star wars and marvel but some great horror, fun documentary’s etc

Doctor who is well placed within the Disney umbrella for the rest of the world, as we have seen with things like hocus pocus 2 (fifth highest streamed movie last year btw) and futurama, disney understand nostalgia and will invest in bringing back “the old favourites” so all these spin offs RTD is teasing, disney will be a factor in that.

People say that physical media is being killed by disney+ – loki, wandavision and 2/3 seasons of the Mando have 4k sets on pre order now! They clearly know there’s an audience so for doctor who, i doubt we need worry, especially as RTD isnt going anywhere and has already said when he steps down again as writer, he will still be a producer so the future is good, just wish the minority of who fans would stop talking for the majority who live in hope and excitement with every announcement we have been getting!

Andrew: If Blu-ray was a dying format, then you would have answered your own question.

More then: Disney deliberately moved away from physical media to promote streaming, hence letting catalogue go out of print, no upgrades, pulling out of markets, and no sublicensing (but lots of lay offs). Aside from a few big titles, they were done with physical – so those people weren’t exactly wrong. What we’re seeing now is the new old broom’s attempt to claw back some of the money they’ve been losing, even though Iger was the one who’d been so keen on streaming to begin with. We’re lucky things have worked out this way. (Hopefully they’ll start to sublicense again next.)

In vision commentaries? Blimey that hasn’t been done since series 5. I do hope that all future episodes get commentary like series 1-4 did. And would be cool if they had the extra ‘podcast’ commentary which goes alongside the repeat broadcast, at least back in 2006.

That 11th December release date is kind of worrying because if they arrive a few days early for some then The Giggle could get leaked

True. I imagine this one might have a very strict do not post till 11th request from the bbc although that won’t stop some sites.

Early leaks are inevitable sadly, advanced screenings, press leaks, staff from the show leaks etc etc. The 20th Anniversary was leaked days in advance thanks to the novelisation being accidently put on shelves early.

Chances are, some very lucky minority might get their pre order copy on the Saturday, just stay away from social medias, who groups etc………………I snooze things within 30 days to stop the BBC,fans and media spoiling things.

Thats assuming they maintain the release date and dont move it by 1 week like they have season 1-4 blu ray

That actually happened with Series 7 and Name of the Doctor. Remarkably the episode didn’t get leaked online, and no one spoiled the John Hurt reveal.

I think its not unfair to say that the true fans respect the fanbase enough to not ruin things when they are lucky to get their hands on stuff early
