Character Options announces a new range of Doctor Who collector sets

THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN set will be available to order from July 20th 2021

Character Options has today revealed the next instalment of Doctor Who collectors’ sets, available exclusively online on the Character Options website.

This Character Options online exclusive set celebrates one of the most iconic, and now sadly lost, adventures of Patrick Troughton’s tenure as the Second Doctor – The Abominable Snowmen. The set includes an electronic classic TARDIS and a Second Doctor figure.

The electronic classic TARDIS, featured by Character Options for the first time in over a decade, comes with different take-off and landing sounds. The TARDIS also features the more heavily weathered exterior and new colour plus the unique reversed front doors.

The new Second Doctor figure is a truly unique release, featuring the usual highly decorated look combined with full articulation on the arms.

The Abominable Snowman, first aired on 30th September 1967, sees fans join the Second Doctor in his eighth story. Set in 1935, the TARDIS has materialised high in the Himalayas where The Doctor is trying to return a relic, a holy bell, borrowed several hundred years earlier, to the High Lama of the local Monastery. Unbeknownst to the Doctor and his companions, things have taken a dark turn and the monastery has been infiltrated by an ancient and evil alien entity known only as The Great Intelligence. The alien is using robot versions of the Yeti’s, better known as ‘the Abominable Snowmen’ a usually passive creature, to attack anyone coming near the monastery. As the Doctor becomes involved, and the full horror of what’s going on becomes clear, he vows to thwart its plans.

Al Dewar of Character notes some of the special things about this 1967 story and development of this new set.

“The Abominable Snowmen is, much like the ‘Jungles of Mechanus’ collectors set before it, quite unusual and features a lot of unique features in terms of its production. For instance the TARDIS itself is unusual in its weathered appearance, with the exterior paint covering the top signs and the colour appearing slightly more indigo than usual. Its look is generally more beaten up and scruffy than fans would usually see and features fully reversed front doors with the phone cubby box sign on right hand door with no handles. The Doctor’s look in this story echoes that of the TARDIS, with the addition of a huge shaggy fur coat held together with twine.

“It’s fair to say fans have waited an astonishingly long time for both these products and we believe fans and collectors will embrace this new electronic TARDIS and the Second Doctor in his iconic shaggy coat as depicted in this classic story.”

Perfect for all Doctor Who fans and collectors, the set comes beautifully presented in special presentation pack with diorama insert and Doctor Who heritage packaging.

It will retail at £39.99 and be available for pre-order in the UK from 20th July 2021 on the Character Options Website

The stories where I know the sign is on the ‘other’ door are ‘The Evil of the Daleks’, ‘The Abominable Snowmen’, ‘The Enemy of the World’. There may be other stories, but certainly those three stories show the doors misplaced.

It was like that from The Evil of the Daleks to The Wheel in Space, then corrected in The Dominators. You can clearly see it in the opening scene of The Enemy of the World.

The front corners stick up on mine (the one with the defective windows), and if you look at the roof with either corner facing you, you can see a slight concave “bowing” inbetween them.

    NOT a happy Whovian…
My Tardis set was waiting for me when I got home today (I’m self-employed for context), and I was perfectly satisfied, right up until I’d finished putting in the batteries. Why? Because CO sold me a defective Tardis! NO I don’t mean the doors are wrong (har har), or that there is no SFX when you open them. I mean that the plastic window piece on the right side has been glued-in off-centre (to the bottom right of where it should be, by at least 2mm). The rest of the exterior is fine, so the right side windows stand-out like a mis-hung door! I have already sent an e-mail of complaint to CO, but they won’t see it until Monday, so who knows where that leaves me? This is a teensy bit worse than receiving noticeably crumpled (two of them) Jungles Of Mechanus sets, and I feel very disappointed, given how excited I was to being getting my first SFX Tardis…

Sounds like it’s has a defect. Your well within your rights to ask for a replacement and I’m sure CO will gladly oblidge.
I can see your dilemma though, your worried if they will have any stock left to send you a replacement. (You could end up just getting a refund).

      July 23rd, 2021 - 5:12pm

hopefully they will keep some back for replacements, have you the funds to order another one and then send this one back for a refund, as its defective return post should also be covered under DSR’s

My first of two sets has just arrived. It’s absolutely brilliant! The detail on both The Doctor and the weathered TARDIS is incredible. They’ve even secured it so that you can’t see the white elastic/wire from the front of the display box, better than the preview pics/video suggested. I’d go so far as to say this is one of the best sets Character have ever done and glad I got in early on Tuesday to order it, bearing in mind how few are left only three days later.

Yes ergon, apart from Big Chief, the Harrops stuff is my favourite. I take it you saw that the 1st Doctor photos are coming soon. Also look out for the Trio of figures, two are complete and the other is nearing completion.
Dan mentioned the Ancient One should have been posted just a week after going live as they were all ready but they’ve had trouble with the foam packaging. (Ah well).

Coleman, order mine Tuesday and it arrived Thursday – I’m in London. The Royal Mail’s ‘arteries’ don’t run at the same speed – post can move much more slowly in some parts of tue country and yet reach cities much farther away from the same startpoint much faster, depending on how many depots etc it has to move through, how good the rail links are etc.

    • Coleman

I would happily buy other figures but space is an issue. I do buy big finish occasionally when they release something that peaks my interest but always digitally as i really don’t have space for a couple of hundred cds.

    • Coleman

      July 28th, 2021 - 4:53pm

Yes I agree with you about not having enough space. Abit of my collections now boxed up purely because I don’t have room to display it.
It’s a shame really because theirs some really beautiful stuff been made over the years and it deserves to be displayed really.

Having ordered quite a bit from CO’s website over the last few years it really depends. I live in Canada, before COVID hit shipping usually took 2 weeks. During and post-COVID, shipping now takes anywhere from 3 weeks to two months. My guess is it’ll probably be 3 weeks for you minimum.

Says there’s about 200 left. I wonder if they’ve put all the stock out though. Mechanus set took way longer to sell out, with only 1000 more units, despite being an army builder, so I feel like they surely must’ve not put all of these sets out yet, unless demand truly is extremely high for these, even more so than the Mechanus sets.

    July 22nd, 2021 - 12:05pm

Literally just received my order! I was fully expecting to wait another week for these (i ordered 2) so completely surprised to get them now.

I would just have to say that the packaging is similar to the Jungles of Mechanus (packed to within a mm of it’s life!) so, if the parcel gets dropped, or dinted (which is in the case of my package) then it’s likely to impact on the display box inside. I for one would be happy to waver the “free P&P” on orders over a certain amount as I’d be more interested in receiving these items intact and in pristine condition.

I do have to sing the praises of the Who shop with regards to packaging as I ordered a couple more of the Jungles of Mechanus Dalek sets from them and they were amazingly well packaged and the display boxes inside were in pristine condition (which shows that it can be done…).

    Good luck everyone!

These sets get huge exposure, especially via BBC SM channels now with their 5 Million followers, but yes there will be people out their who don’t use SM and are unaware and think this is “normal” because its on ebay, they just an item, like it and buy it and dont look any further.

Exactly why do it all they do is just rob true fans

    • booboo

      July 22nd, 2021 - 5:56pm

I think most “true fans” if there is such a thing who are inserted in figures would know about this from multiple sources, they (ebayers) target the more casual buyer, but this happens all the time with everything so we shouldn’t be surprised.

But realistically its why this site exists, regular visitors need not miss out on anything.

I should point even some retailers buy multiples as well, its not all ebay and also 3rd party sellers on Amazon do the same and they are not often mentioned.

    • Anonymous

      July 22nd, 2021 - 6:39pm

It feels like such a niche thing to me, it genuinely baffles me that there are people who are interested in classic-era Doctor Who figures enough to be on eBay and find and buy a 2nd Doctor TARDIS set but not into it enough to know it was coming out or where, etc. It’s so weird.
