Character Options announces a new range of Doctor Who collector sets

THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN set will be available to order from July 20th 2021

Character Options has today revealed the next instalment of Doctor Who collectors’ sets, available exclusively online on the Character Options website.

This Character Options online exclusive set celebrates one of the most iconic, and now sadly lost, adventures of Patrick Troughton’s tenure as the Second Doctor – The Abominable Snowmen. The set includes an electronic classic TARDIS and a Second Doctor figure.

The electronic classic TARDIS, featured by Character Options for the first time in over a decade, comes with different take-off and landing sounds. The TARDIS also features the more heavily weathered exterior and new colour plus the unique reversed front doors.

The new Second Doctor figure is a truly unique release, featuring the usual highly decorated look combined with full articulation on the arms.

The Abominable Snowman, first aired on 30th September 1967, sees fans join the Second Doctor in his eighth story. Set in 1935, the TARDIS has materialised high in the Himalayas where The Doctor is trying to return a relic, a holy bell, borrowed several hundred years earlier, to the High Lama of the local Monastery. Unbeknownst to the Doctor and his companions, things have taken a dark turn and the monastery has been infiltrated by an ancient and evil alien entity known only as The Great Intelligence. The alien is using robot versions of the Yeti’s, better known as ‘the Abominable Snowmen’ a usually passive creature, to attack anyone coming near the monastery. As the Doctor becomes involved, and the full horror of what’s going on becomes clear, he vows to thwart its plans.

Al Dewar of Character notes some of the special things about this 1967 story and development of this new set.

“The Abominable Snowmen is, much like the ‘Jungles of Mechanus’ collectors set before it, quite unusual and features a lot of unique features in terms of its production. For instance the TARDIS itself is unusual in its weathered appearance, with the exterior paint covering the top signs and the colour appearing slightly more indigo than usual. Its look is generally more beaten up and scruffy than fans would usually see and features fully reversed front doors with the phone cubby box sign on right hand door with no handles. The Doctor’s look in this story echoes that of the TARDIS, with the addition of a huge shaggy fur coat held together with twine.

“It’s fair to say fans have waited an astonishingly long time for both these products and we believe fans and collectors will embrace this new electronic TARDIS and the Second Doctor in his iconic shaggy coat as depicted in this classic story.”

Perfect for all Doctor Who fans and collectors, the set comes beautifully presented in special presentation pack with diorama insert and Doctor Who heritage packaging.

It will retail at £39.99 and be available for pre-order in the UK from 20th July 2021 on the Character Options Website

I had an Email at 10.37 this morning that it had been shipped. Still no sign of it though.
The posts usually terrible round our way though, sometimes we have deliveries at Teatime.
Is it royal mail though or a courier?

Yes Booboo, I was hoping it was a courier like DPD, their usually very quick.
Now you’ve mentioned Royal Mail, mine will be teatime if I’m lucky or not at all today.

Funnily, we never have Royal Mail delivers at all in the morning now, like we had years ago.
It’s usually early afternoon between 1.00 and 2.00, at the earliest.

      July 22nd, 2021 - 11:25am

I assume 2nd August and pre order were probably put there just incase there was a delay from customs to warehouse. Though quite a few seem to have been dispatched and received regardless of dispatch email so best to assume it still might come before the weekend if all is running well.

I received a dispatch email today, so expect it to turn up in a couple of days. I presume it is easier for CO to start shipping out paid Orders now instead of a massive rush at the end?

put in say 500, and keep reducing until you can order whats left, that’s the stock level, it doesn’t allow for the fact all stock may not have been added or stock in baskets that are not purchased though.

fact is either way though it appears to be selling well

    • prototype dalek

      July 22nd, 2021 - 10:14am

And seems to be less than 300 sets left now so high chance all stock could be gone within 2 days of release, so it’s certainly sending a good signal to Character.

I wouldn’t believe that this figure will never be released again… the figures in the 13 doctors figure set were meant to be “exclusive” to that set but it seems we’re getting a rerelease of the first doctor in the exact outfit from that set in the upcoming sensorites B&M release.

I wouldn’t be surprised if next year we see a 2nd dr in fur coat in B&M.

    • Prototype dalek

      July 21st, 2021 - 2:42pm

I assume the exception to that was that was a Toys R Us UK exclusive, and now that they have gone in to liquidation the exclusive rights probably went with them so probably up for further re-releases again now they have gone.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2021 - 2:53pm

I doubt we will see a re-release, I’m sure Charater want to keep it as an exclusive for a while and there wouldn’t be a set to release it in due to the fact that the only second story with him in this coat will be released in the very near future so this figure will most likely be a one off.

4000 as a limited edition one time opportunity to acquire the 2nd Doctor in his iconic fur coat along with a very special and unique electronic Tardis. Both will never be rereleased as Al mentioned in the video that’s what makes it extra extra special.

Hardly surprising really, it’s one of the richest looking Tardis sets. I’m happy I’ve obtained one.

I have to say that I am really looking forward to this Troughton release and thank you Booboo for all the hard work that you do in maintaining this excellent dr who site. I re-watched the Abominable Snowmen episode 2 again recently and for its time during the 1960’s it was and still is an excellent well written story and the Yeti still terrify me. Just been looking at the extra photos that’s been put up of the new CO set.
Never noticed before but is this TARDIS underscaled.
On the show I always thought the Doctor only had to open one door to enter or exit, but these photos show both doors need to open for the 2nd Doctor to unload?

yeah when they first developed the 7th doctor TARDIS toy, they made a mistake by making it off by scale point (the figures are 1/13 scale whereas the classic tardis is 1/13.5)

      July 20th, 2021 - 10:06pm

Both doors open mainly because other TARDISes have both doors open (which is especially useful to get figures out of them, as they can fit 3 figures), also if you watch Web of Fear you’ll see that both doors of this particular TARDIS open, especially when they arrive in London as The Doctor opens the left-hand door with the phone panel and then opens the right hand one to admit Jamie and Victoria 🙂

I shall pass on this set as I simply cannot justify the basically £40 price mark.

I understand that this includes and electronic TARDIS, but £40 is basically £20 for the figure and £20 for the TARDIS.

I’ll just stick to the figure sets that I personally like the of. Better to save money for something that I really want than to pay out money for something that would be the case of having it just for the sake of having it

Yes 10 years ago I thought they were very expensive for what they were, hence only got one of releases back then. But by today’s standards you do get a lot for your money. If this set had gone up with inflation think they could have asked £55 to £65, but they have roughly held the price, fair play to CO.

    • Totalbritish25

      July 20th, 2021 - 8:17pm

See I agree with you I love this set but it just so hard in my eyes to justify the set’s I collect so much other stuff then just doctor who and most 2 packs I have seen or bought for around the same price have the figures and then some bits to go with the figures like the dalek set they did a while back for 24.99 and I could agree with that £5 up from the B&M set but not with this £20 more for a doctor and tardis set with lights and sounds if it was £30 yes I could be on board but with so much stuff coming out these day it just seems hard to be able to keep up on these sets

    • NickD

      July 20th, 2021 - 9:08pm

Sadly productions costs have skyrocketed. Making the same product a decade later for roughly £40 instead of £35 is a real bargain. This could have easily cost £50. Also it’s a very limited run, so for the price it is really good value I find.

    • Slitheen71

      July 20th, 2021 - 10:43pm

I do think this is what some of us want from character again, it’s what we miss from the forbidden planet days. The B&M sets are great and the new figures and variants have filled big gaps in collectors collections but it has it’s limitations through budget constraints being sold in a pile it high sell it cheap store.
I want the yeti now but I would like it as an exclusive rather than a B&M set. I will pay the cost for accessories. To have a premium and A budget range isn’t a bad thing, whether you collect one or the other or even both it doesn’t matter it’s what your happy with.
Ace was released last year with backpack and rocket launcher , what a great budget figure that was to fill a companion gap for many. Never forget though that some of us were happy to pay £20 for that figure with extra arms, nitro nine cans and the base ball bat

Totalbritish25, if I was you, if you can afford it, get it ASAP. I spoke to a family member today and they told me that it’s completely worth getting due to limited availability and that it’s based on a mistake. They even told me that they would pay for it.

I completely understand why the price has to go up as it’s all to do with the production costs and moulds and all that sort of thing, and like others have said, the price could have easily have been put up to the £50 to £60 mark, so it’s basically a bargain for the price it is

I’ve only ordered one set as I want other collectors to be able to get it too, so yeah, I do take back what I said in my original post. I’m still thinking of how much merchandise used to cost, I need to get my head into the modern day and take on board the cost of production etc

Oooh this looks rather nice.. and regarding the price, I’m happy to pay more if it means I’m not having to head out to my poorly stocked local B&Ms (still waiting on the wave from last autumn lol…), during the tail end of a global pandemic.
Plus I’m having to self isolate this week so I’m glad the b&m stuff hasn’t released yet haha.. yikes.

With both B and M releasing doctor and Tardis packs now, do you think it’s likely we’ll see the “bad wolf” prototype / unreleased tardis ? Would make sense to release it now
