5.5″ B&M 2017 Collectors Set The 4th Doctor

To find your nearest store visit www.bmstores.co.uk. Please ring (option 3) to check availability before travelling. Priced at £16.99 per set. Product code 294255

This 5.5″ figure set is presented in collectors series window box packaging.

The 4th Doctor set contains…

  • The 4th Doctor
  • Leela
  • K9 Mk1

This second B&M exclusive 4th Doctor Set contains The 4th Doctor from the 1975 Tom Baker story The Pyramids of Mars, leela from the 1978 Tom Baker story The Invasion Of Time and K9 Mk1 first seen in the 1977 story The Invisible Enemy.

Accessories include the sonic screwdriver with the 4th Doctor and a knife with Leela.

The Leela in this set is a re-release of the one seen in the Invasion Of Time set released some years ago.

The new figure (front) does have darker hair and more noticeable blue eyes but other differences are minor.

The k9 in the set is undoubtedly the highlight for long term collectors.

This K9 Mk1 is a darker grey than previous releases along with a black tail, top panel and painted side view screen.

The image below shows the difference between this new release (left) and the previous version.

Are K9 Mark I and Mark II identical? Does this serve as both?

Essentially yes, also Mark III as it appeared in the Five Doctors. Sarah apparently gave him a paint job before School Reunion

Leela has the Face of Evil hand painted a flesh colour for some reason, rather than the same hand as the original Invasion of Time variant.

Are both sides of the Doctor’s scarf painted or is it just the one side like the original PoM figure?

I’ve been to buy my Fourth Doctor and Monster sets, and finally got hold of both after searching in two other stores which had sold out. The store I bought them from had only one of each Fourth/Monster sets and two x Ninth Doctor sets.

This got me round to thinking, to say there is “no market” for Doctor Who figures, these sets do sell out very quickly; it does show big demand for the right characters at the right price point in the right retail outlet.

Surely other retailers could learn from B&M’s strategy where these are an annual and highly anticipated release of nothing more than repaints.

Really want thr Ninth Doctor set as i never got the Doctor, and need a replacement Rose…. but unsure to get this. Ive had the exact same 4th Doctor before (pretty sure it was that one). Never had a Leela, and need a K9. I just dont like the idea of spending seventeen quid on the one figure ive never had.

I didnt even buy the 12th doctor for £15. I brought him from FP for 6.99. The only figure that has been purchased that was a lot was the War Doctor…. he was brought for me and is still in his packaging, no intention of opening him.

If any of you reckon i should get the 4th dr set, let me know and whichever gets the most answers ie yes/no ill go with it. I hate deciding

I’d say get the Fourth Doctor set because that Leela comes from a set that isn’t all that common and the K9 is exclusive to that set. Also the Fourth Doctor might have variations in it. The Ninth Doctor set is basically just rereleases of common figures that you could get for cheap off eBay anyway.

This has different hair from the Fendahl set one. But I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve only got one Leela variant, the one that is in this set. I honestly don’t know if I want to get this set. The Pyramids 4 doesn’t come with the TARDIS panel, but the K9 is an exclusive.

Probably the best set of the three because it features two variants. The classic K9 is something we should have had in the Warriors Gate two pack in 2010 so it’s amazing to finally see it here.

Baker’s jacket seems to be closer to his brown frock coat worn from The Face of Evil onwards, rather than the olive purple jacket seen on the original Pyramids version. The simpler waistcoat pattern is the same as on the US Diamond re-release which I guess is nice for collectors over here who prefer the brighter addition of that decal. It wouldn’t have harmed to make his face less orange though.

To make it accurate to Face of Evil would have been nice though seeing as he’s packaged with Leela – a simple repaint of the hat to a bottle green along with the new brown coat would have completed the look (bar the shoes, but I guess it’s too much to ask for the change to the booted leg piece).

As for Leela? There’s very few variants of that costume out there. And they’ve done a very good job of it on the previous releases. Of course with resculpts they could add a fur ‘outsider’ cloak from The Invasion of Time akin to 6’s blue Necros cape. Perhaps simply just some sand detailing on the boots and legs from the scenes where she’s training with the outsiders from that story – anything!

I would have preferred it if they would have chosen the original Leela outfit – two really slight repaint opportunities (which they would have jumped on back in the day) could have raised their heads. Perhaps a blue eyed version from Invisible Enemy onwards, or a version with a head scar from where she was shot in The Sun Makers. I know, tiny little changes but it’s literally anything at this point just to spice it up.

Is this one of these cases where different people see different colours? I’d say the Pyramids figure has a very dark purple coat.

I’m hoping it is a brown. Last year’s Tennant figure had the grey suit actually painted brown. For some reason they went back to grey for the 13 Doctors set.
