Mark Hunt from Character Options commented: “From the moment we announced details of the 10” Thirteenth Doctor figure in late August, we have been inundated with questions about a 5.5-inch scale version. We are therefore delighted to be able to reveal details of this latest Doctor Who release.”

They now only have 481! Which I think someone said they had 600 odd yesterday? That’s pretty good, right??

We don’t know how many they’d need to sell to break even. A couple hundered sold in the first few days is good but then I think that’s what happened with the Missy figure…and that’s still on their site now.
Characters website will target a small percent of customers I’d have thought anyway. Although this site probably helped sell a lot.

Missy was several hundred from our point a view in the first 24 hours but people knew it was an exclusive, this is different, many will have already ordered via the who shop and galaxy 4 and many others will wait for FP.com and Amazon or even Argos and other retailers.

I dont want to add further but i see a lot more than people think “this side of the fence”

      Booboo, I’m afraid I don’t follow.

Do you mean sales are better than the numbers indicate due to the different retailers offering preorders? Or that more is being produced after this initial roll-out?

    • booboo

      November 8th, 2018 - 9:29pm

Missy was a known exclusive so numbers were high in the first 24 hours, this figure is different as galaxy4 and the who shop have had it up for order for weeks, i dont know that quantities they have sold but i bet its far higher than the 120 or so than Character so far.

my guess is they are looking at several thousand from all retailers combined with the main contenders yet to put it up for order

      November 8th, 2018 - 9:46pm

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.

In spirit of supporting the line and encourage interest from retailers, would it be better to order from retailers or CO themselves?

It seems that a few hundred orders on, say Amazon or another retailer may garner more interest than direct purchases from CO. Or I could be completely wrong…

    • booboo

      November 8th, 2018 - 9:52pm

think its a combined effort, the more widespread the orders the better, confining Missy to just Character on-line clearly didn’t work

I hope they do the hole team plus the tardis, well they sort of need to now we have the 13th doctor figure.
I just hope CO can be bothered to!

    P. S this needs to be out in time for christmas!!!!!!

myself and a few other around forums try to go to great pains to explain that its nothing to do with if character can be bothered to make them but rather if retailers are interested in ordering enough, its that simple really.

I think it’s important not to get your hopes up. From this I would not be surprised if there was no companion figures, I certainly would be surprised if there was monster or villain figures and I certainly don’t think a TARDIS console looks likely at least anytime soon. I think a flight control TARDIS might be viable in the next year if these figures prove successful but Character have had a declining interest in Doctor Who with lower viewership, increasing prices of materials and workmanship and declining interest from consumers. Of late we have had no proper Clara figure, and the Bill figure was mostly recycled parts. Character even experimented with an online exclusive Missy figure that Toys R Us ended up selling quite a lot of at discount price – I personally spent over £25 for the purple variant online and got the black one for £3 in a closing down sale. I think the fact this series there’s three companions will make it a difficult decision for Character to fork out on making figures of them. If they did, it seems likely they would be in the form of a re-tooled or kit-bashed figure much akin to Bill or the 13th Doctor. Re-using pre-sculpted figures is fine so long as it works and saves costs, as with the 13th Doctor this figure seems rushed – especially as the paint application is undesirable at best, with the sloppily painted rainbow ending halfway down the coat and hair roots that looks like a messy blob of paint (when we’ve seen Character can do much better than this) – the concept photo is not completely unrealistic detail wise, the figures could be near identical if the rainbow stripes were printed rather than painted or painted with more precision or if a little more care was given to the hair, butnit seems these have been sacrificed to save money and mass produce. For £13 it seems very poor quality, considering the show is currently in its highest viewership of the new series, more popular than ever, and yet the paint quality of toys from 2006 is far superior. I hope Seven20 have a product that is in any way an improvement to this because Character just do not seem to care enough.

A lot of this could potentially be resolved to an extent if they just invested in a bit more advertising. I mean, banners on the internet will just go unnoticed, but maybe some tv ads on kids channels, itv, amazon prime etc. Surely that would be worth thinking about.

    • booboo

      November 8th, 2018 - 10:46am

probably too expensive for just one figure, if we get a wave then that’s possible but the stock would have to be in the shops for any TV adverts to work.

Social media does give a massive about of the “free advertising” as well if done right, the B&M sets prove that, how else would you have known about them? they had no adversing whatsoever yet they sold so well as to justify a second run.

    • KMCustoms

      November 8th, 2018 - 9:31am

Couldn’t agree with you more! It feels like they’ve just thrown the figure together, without the dedication and care that they once had. We know the articulation on the prototype could be achieved because Missy had superior articulation. All the recent Doctor figures have had the ball hinged shoulders, even the tuxedo 10th Doctor. And as for the details, like you mentioned, they could be printed on. We haven’t had a 100% newly sculpted figure in years, so it seems difficult to understand why they need to save money.

    • booboo

      November 8th, 2018 - 9:47am

Probably because they lost one of their biggest customers and the entire USA market when the Leicense was split

Big enough reasons to have to compromise to get stuff on the shelves at a reasonable price one would have thought

If a wave of figures are pitched at the toy fair it will be down to sufficient orders from retailers to ensure their production

    • TheDarkAndTheLight

      November 8th, 2018 - 10:05am

That makes a lot of sense, booboo, and admittedly I hadn’t fully taken that into account, but I can’t help but feel that, if they were always going to be in the position that they had to use pre-existing moulds for some parts of the figure, that there are better ones they could have gone for than the ones they did.

Also, I have no idea of the difference in costs between painting and printing, but I feel that the rainbow piping is almost as essential an aspect of Thirteen’s costume as Twelve’s coloured lining was, and think it deserves to be captured fully. In saying that, Character once gave Twelve orange lining (in a purple coat), and decided to forgo adding it altogether on some figures, so I guess getting half of the piping is a win?

    • booboo

      November 8th, 2018 - 10:41am

depends on how the tooling blocks are laid out and compatibility and interchangeability, the “better arms” maybe in a block with lots of other unusable parts that would have to just get binned.

sometimes i wish character would make a video or something of the production and blocks / tooling etc so people would better understand the process and see why something are just not possible.

    • TheDarkAndTheLight

      November 8th, 2018 - 10:50am

I’ve only just noticed that the legs look really long on this figure for some reason. I think it’s because of how small the torso is but it’s weird how far down the knee joints are sculpted compared to other figures in this scale.

Again, her loose-fitting, high-waisted culottes would look like they were sitting a lot more naturally had pieces designed to resemble the thigh area of tight-fitting, modern-cut jeans not been used.

      @ Donovan…. at the moment it’s about 14$ ($13.96) plus shipping. I bought 2 of them and it’s about 28$ including shipping.

      • BUT REMEMBER: •
      – Seven20 is going to be releasing a 13th Doctor 5.5” Figure ALSO….. That will be for the American market so it will be a couple dollars cheaper…. (Doesn’t matter to me though, because I always buy 2 to 3 of every figure, so I’m getting BOTH the Character Options Figure and the Seven20 13th Doctor Figure…. Just like I did with both 13th Doctors Sonics)

      – just so you know, you can Google “Pounds to Dollars” and it will give you a TON of different ways to tell how much Dollars are to pounds! Just letting you know!

The image on the left is the production one. The other RHS is a photoshop montage of sculpt and early prototype which always have superior (if un-manufacturable) levels of decoration. The inherent danger in releasing images of prototypes is that it creates an image of something that it is inherently not possible to achieve in mass production ..

The face/head and body are all taken from scans so no sculpting as such is involved other than cleaning up the scan data especially on the head. The hair and clothing is sculpted over the scan body data as a template so saying ”The one on the right is to bulky and face sculpt is dreadful, doesn’t represent Jodie’s physique at all’ is irrelevant as to all extent and purposes they are exactly the same to a large degree.

There is no console room currently in development .. just so you know

Apologies for using the word “dreadful”, that was quite extreme – however there is a clear difference in the representation of faces between the two as shown ( if it’s to do with paint applications . . . ) and I believe the final product on the left is a exquisite bit of work. All the very best.

I hate to sound argumentative, but I disagree with the bulk of the comments – the one on the right is a one-off concept sculpt with articulation photoshopped on to give an idea of the final look and is, in my opinion, vastly superior to the ‘final’ result.

Anonymous beneath me seems to be bang on the money – even comparing the ‘final’ model to a standard Martha Jones figure, you can see that the arms & top of the legs are identical, which throws the Doctor’s proportions a little off, and more noticeably ruins the flow of her costume. While they could just about get away with the sleeves, the fit of Martha’s tight, boot-cut denims in no way resembles the look of Thirteen’s loose culottes.

I understand that cost-cutting measures need to be put in place, but I feel that the first figure for a new Doctor (especially one that will most likely be going for around £15) deserves much better than this. Even putting the reuse of parts aside, the face sculpt is far closer on the right (again, my opinion), and the rainbow piping runs the full length of her coat.

In spite of all of these gripes, being the idiot that I am, I’ll be forking out that £15 for this once it hits shelves. I can only hope that the one on the left isn’t quite THE ‘final’ version, or that it at least looks better in hand once released.

The Right picture looks fantastic! I would be very upset and confused if we’re getting the Left one! Why would CO go to the lengths of making all the new parts, including double jointed elbows and not use them! The Left image looks very cheap and to me, it appears to be hand painted and kitbashed from the Martha figure, this would make more sense to be the prototype! You can’t cut corners on The Doctor!

Sorry, KMCustoms – your post wasn’t here when I posted mine. I agree with you on the right looking better, but unfortunately I believe it is a photoshopped mock-up of a static concept model, and it looks a lot more likely that the left is closer to what we’ll be getting.

      November 7th, 2018 - 2:58pm

    • KMCustoms

      November 7th, 2018 - 3:27pm

Even if it is photoshopped, it’s very frustrating that the final figure doesn’t feature that articulation. I don’t understand why CO need to cut these corners to save money, when they haven’t actually released a completely brand new figure (that doesn’t recycle old parts) for years.

      First regeneration cycle = regenerate x12 times…
      Bill Hartnell
      Pat Troughton
      Jon Pertwee
      Tom Baker
      Peter Davison
      Colin Baker
      Sylvester McCoy

      John Hurt
      Christopher Eccleston
      David Tennant
      David Tennant
      Matt Smith
David Tennant’s Doctor regenerated into himself…so technically 13 Doctors (played by 12 different actors*)

      current regeneration cycle has
      Peter Capaldi
      Jodie Whittaker

so technically there’s 15 incarnations of the Doctor so far…

(*David Bradley also did an excellent job of portraying the first Doctor, so did Richard Hurndall)

If cutting corners reduces the price so that we can actually have figures, I imagine most people would be alright sacrificing slight adjustments to articulation.

Why does the one on the right look different to the one on the left. I mean, beyond the paint apps, the one on the right has different arms and a different torso.

It’s quite odd isn’t it . . . I prefer the version on the left.

I think the figure on the left is the final version, ( when referring back to the figure in packaging image ) Anyway if it is then it’s incredible and just in time for Christmas

Surely between two it’s the pro and final edition of the figures as shown pictured ?

I agree because the one on the right has different bicep joints to the one on the left.

But the one in the packaging shots looks to be the one on the left. You’re probably right though, the one on the left probably is the final version, as it looks a lot more polished, whilst the other is probably just the prototype which they made using reused parts to test the likeness.

In terms of the sculpt yes the promo image here and the packaging version are the same – slight paint application differences here and there are probably throwing you off, the hair most notably. The one on the right is to bulky and face sculpt is dreadful, doesnt represent Jodie’s physique at all.

Looks good! Hope we get the companions too and a Tardis console room! Here’s hoping!

A TARDIS console room is ambitious, however the new design is significantly smaller than the previous, so it’s more likely than getting a 12’s TARDIS set.
