Classic Doctor Who DVD and Blu-ray releases confirmed
Classic Doctor Who DVD and Blu-ray releases confirmed
From the official site www.doctorwho.tv
Five enhanced Special Editions, a ‘reimagination’ and the first classic Doctor Who Blu-ray are amongst titles confirmed for release in 2013.
The Third Doctor’s first adventure, Spearhead from Space – which sees him battle the Autons and their masters, the Nestene Consciousness – will be released on Blu-ray in July. Due to industrial action, Spearhead is the only adventure of the 1963-89 run of the series to be made entirely on location film, which can be upscaled to Blu-ray HD.
June sees the long-awaited DVD debut of classic Fourth Doctor adventure Terror of the Zygons, with a extra sequences added to episode one; alongside gritty Third Doctor story The Mind of Evil, restored to full colour glory for the first time since the 1970s.
In August The Ice Warriors will be released, with the missing episodes two and three reconstructed using soundtrack and images, as on the 1998 VHS release.
And there will be further special editions of The Ark in Space, The Aztecs, The Visitation, Inferno and The Green Death, all of which were released early on in the Doctor Who DVD programme and missed out on improved remastering techniques and expanded special features.
The release schedule so far:
February 25: The Ark in Space: Special Edition
March 11: The Aztecs: Special Edition (plus Galaxy 4 reconstruction)
May 6: The Visitation: Special Edition
May 27: Inferno: Special Edition
June 3: The Mind of Evil
June 24: Terror of the Zygons
July 15: Spearhead from Space Blu-Ray
August 5: The Green Death: Special Edition
August 26: The Ice Warriors
September 16: Scream of the Shalka
(Note: these are Region 2 dates, Region 1 releases are normally a few days later. All dates are provisional and subject to change.)

February 8th, 2013 - 9:16amice warriors sounds like a weird one, i mean why has it been delayed by 4 months? I think they are planning animation for it and the recons as extra’s like they said originaly. Well there is a convention at the end of this month for dr who dvd animation releases and they said they have some big plans to announce at it so i hope they announce the ice warriors.
Vortexsurfer
February 8th, 2013 - 11:18amI would sincerely hope so, otherwise the release just seems lazy after the Reign of Terror. Let us hope they are simply pulling proverbial wool over our eyes.
Gordon
February 8th, 2013 - 12:10pm1 thing i have noticed about the article is that they say spearhead blu will be upscaled. As it was shot on film it wouldnt need upscaled almost as if the person writing out the report has no idea
drjakeyoung
February 8th, 2013 - 3:38pmlol, that does sound strange!
kiwi63
February 8th, 2013 - 9:08amNo Animation for The Ice Warriors???
This better be a big troll by the BBC or else I hate them forever
DOCTOR WHO ONE
February 8th, 2013 - 8:47amI own all of Tom Bakers first series on DVD except ‘The Ark in Space’, so I might wait and get the upcoming special edition.
Space1999
February 8th, 2013 - 8:20amShame no tenth planet
DOCTOR WHO ONE
February 8th, 2013 - 8:43amThere won’t be a Tenth Planet DVD release unless the other missing episodes are discovered as they are currently missing from the BBC archives.
Stupid old BBC, they never should have wiped so many episodes, otherwise we’d have the joy of watching stories like the Tenth Planet on DVD by now.
Still, at least they did not wipe the all important beginnings of Doctor Who being ‘An Unearthly Child’, ‘The Daleks’ and ‘The Edge of Destruction’, otherwise a lot of us would never have brought the brilliant ‘Doctor Who – The Beginnings’ DVD Box Set 😀
Anonymous
February 8th, 2013 - 11:13amMissing episodes? Last time we checked there were three of the four episodes from The Tenth Planet still in existance.
matparks08
February 8th, 2013 - 11:17amIt looks like Tenth Planet will be the final release then – maybe for November for the actual anniversary? There’s definitely three episodes unless the BBC have recently done something VERY silly!
Matt Smithy

February 8th, 2013 - 8:54amSame, of all the DVD releases, Scream of the Shalka? Seems like they’re running out of episodes to release!
thedaleksdeath
February 8th, 2013 - 5:44pmI agree wonder if they will animate ”The Ice Warriors”

February 8th, 2013 - 5:13amBrilliant News! l would have thought Mind of Evil would come out September or so even with its great progress but never did l think it would come out before Terror of the Zygons! brilliant releases schedule for what is likely to be if not the last then second last year of Doctor Who on DVD 😀
Blake
February 8th, 2013 - 4:55amIsn’t scream of the Shalka a animation with Richard E Grant?
Damn no tenth planet announced 🙁
Blake
February 8th, 2013 - 4:57amAnd doesn’t anyone else find it odd that mind of evil is only a week later than inferno SE?
DOCTOR WHO ONE
February 8th, 2013 - 8:46amYes, Scream of the Shalka was indeed an animated story with Richard E. Grant as the 9th Doctor before the 2005 relaunch of Doctor Who which saw Christopher Eccleston made officially the 9th Doctor on screen.
As for the Tenth Planet, the reason that has not been announced is because most of the episodes of that story are currently missing, only part 1 and 4 [or is it 2 and 4 ?] are available.
DoctorWhom
February 8th, 2013 - 12:46pmNo, all of Tenth Planet exists apart from episode four, the very last one.
pathdw98
February 8th, 2013 - 4:44amwith scream of the shalka being released does that mean its now canon(again)?
pathdw98
February 8th, 2013 - 4:11amI know its not mentioned in the list above, but has anyone heard anymore about the rumoured moonbase dvd? is there any truth to it?
Space1999
February 8th, 2013 - 8:21amI reckon that won’t happen
Harold Saxon
February 7th, 2013 - 11:44pmMIND OF EVIL & TERROR OF THE ZYGONS,im in who heaven with those”!
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 11:18pmscream of the shalka kind of makes no sense. I mean, why not just put it as an extra on another DVD like the Paul mcgann shada on the legacy box?
Gordon
February 7th, 2013 - 11:01pmCould be that its a red herring for ice warriors until the animation is anounced. Dan hall is at a convention in a couple of weeks time and a world exclusive has been hyped. I know steve roberts mentioned the recon is an extra which would not make it main feature. It apparently was originaly due in april and it doesnt make sence being pushed back 4 months unless they are planning something for it. Some of these release dates feel wrong ie releases 2 weeks in a row so it may change
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 11:11pmi agree with you Gordon. I am extremely worried about the ice warriors. Well, we will find out by the end of this month
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 11:15pmhey Gordon are you grazey1985 from the digital spy forums?
Gordon
February 7th, 2013 - 11:19pmyeah
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 11:21pmah,cool. That was random..lol. I mean out of all the forums on the net us 2 are on the same 2!
AlphaOmega
February 7th, 2013 - 10:40pmMost of these, I want to buy. Particularly SCREAM OF THE SHALKA!!!!!
The Whofan101
February 7th, 2013 - 9:51pmI’m expect’The Underwater Menace’ will be released with ‘The Ice Warriors’, with ‘The Tenth Planet’ getting a release sometime after ‘Scream of the Shalka’.
The Whofan101
February 7th, 2013 - 9:52pm*I expect ’The Underwater Menace’ will be released with ‘The Ice Warriors’
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:55pmno i don’t think so, because there are 2 episodes of the underwater menace, i think it will get it’s own release
Anonymous
February 7th, 2013 - 9:56pmThey list Galaxy 4 with The Aztecs, but haven’t listed The Underwater Menace with The Ice Warriors, so it could still be released elsewhere (either by itself as there are two episodes or on another release).
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 10:00pmthere arent any other troughton releases so it has to be released on it own, which is good
Black TARDIS
February 8th, 2013 - 8:45amAn amazingly good point there… I would enjoy seeing the 10th Planet re-enacted for those who aren’t 46/7 or above… Like me, and a Whovian who is sitting to the right of me.
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:49pmalso booboo, you forgot the 2 dalek movie’s that are being released on blue ray on 16th may
booboo
February 7th, 2013 - 9:51pmthey have nothing to do with BBC wordwide
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:52pmah, i still consider them part of doctor who 🙂 I mean scream of the shalka is not cannon
MasterKasterborous
February 7th, 2013 - 11:59pmBut it is being released by the BBC which the Cushing movies are not.
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:38pmso just underwater menace and tenth planet left to go now (then there will be a few years of special edition’s/animations(hopefully) and new series releases).
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:26pmBOOBOO, I AM STILL VERY CONFUSED…WHY HAVEN’T THEY ANIMATED THE ICE WARRIORS!!!
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:27pmI expect it has something to do with money and the fact that they already had one animation project going
Anonymous
February 7th, 2013 - 9:33pmMost likely they were busy with The Reign of Terror, and going by a brief clip on their website, they may have done e Tenth Planet, so there really wasn’t time for The Ice Warriors.
Shame Cosgrove Hall shut down when it did, we wouldn’t have had the six year delay and it may have offered enough time to get us the story, and more possibly.
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:34pmthe tenth planet better be animated, but what about the underwater menace?
Anonymous
February 7th, 2013 - 9:37pmNobody knows, I’d suspect it would be just a reconstruction as well (possibly on its own DVD given that they also have episode three).
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:40pmi am feeling very upset at this news, i mean no offense loose cannons, but i can hardly tell whats going on most of the time!
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:41pmI like them, at least missing stories with telesnaps are more true to screen than are the animations
Anonymous
February 7th, 2013 - 9:44pmPlus, after the pretty bad reception The Reign of Terror got, I wouldn’t see BBC Worldwide rushing to commsision more from them.
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:45pmyeah agreed, i think telesnaps, off-screen images, surviving clips and audio is the best way forward now
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:46pmwell, i suppose it’s not as bad as i thought, i mean look on the bright side, mind of evil in colour 2nd June!!
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:46pmYESSSSSSSS!!!!!, GONNA BE AMAZING!!!! 🙂
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 11:26pmi thought (bar the 1st part of episode 4) that the reign of terror animation was good
Tim M
February 8th, 2013 - 10:08amTelesnaps DO NOT EXIST for parts 4 and 5 of ‘The Reign of Terror’ and neither do they exist for parts 1 and 4 of ‘The Invasion’. Which makes sense as to why these stories have missing episodes animated. Other stories that could have the potential for DVD release such as ‘The Crusade’, ‘The Tenth Planet’, ‘The underwater Menace’, ‘The Moonbase’ and ‘The Ice Warriors’ DO have telesnaps (and some have clips) which could be used with the soundtrack instead of animation. That may be the way forward for future incomplete stories.
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:23pmHang on, if i remember rightly, they only reconstructed about 5 mins of the 2 episodes of ice warriors for video. They better reconstruct the entire two missing stories, otherwise it’s practically worthless!
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:25pmLike i keep saying, WHY HAVEN’T THEY ANIMATED IT! THEY HAVE HAD LONG ENOUGH!
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:26pmI know, to be honest I was quite disappointed by reign of terror. Sure it was ok, but the other guys who did the invasion dvd a better job, even if it wasnt as detailed
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:28pmI SWEAR TO GOD IF THEY HAVEN’T FOUND THE TENTH PLANET PART 4 AND IF THEY DON’T ANIMATE IT THEN I WILL…
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:29pmwhat, you’ll find it or do something bad? 🙂
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:31pmMaybe both 😈 i am so angry at the moment, wait the past 3/4 years waiting for them to animate this, and they don’t!!!
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:33pmI understand, If they dont animate it, they should at least reconstruct it with images, footage and soundtrack. OH YEAH, i just thought. If they do animate tenth planet 4, then how will they fit in the regeneration sequence. It would look really out of place. The only thing they can really do is reconstruct it.
celestial toymaker
February 7th, 2013 - 9:21pmscream of the shalka on dvd oh my god
Fezmeister
February 7th, 2013 - 9:20pmIf they’re releasing Scream of the Shalka, I don’t see why they can’t bring us The Curse of Fatal Death, even as a special feature on another release. I think it deserves it.
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:22pmstill though, can i ask, WHY ARE THEY NOT ANIMATING THE ICE WARRIORS!!!
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:16pmNO!!!!!!!!!!!!ICE WARRIORS NOT BEING ANIMATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
drjakeyoung
February 7th, 2013 - 9:18pmAlso, why is scream of the shalka being released?
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:09pmhope ice warriors has 2 animated episodes
Adipose333
February 7th, 2013 - 9:10pmIt looks like it doesn’t it says that eps 2 & 3 have been reconstructed as on the VHS release
Adipose333
February 7th, 2013 - 9:10pm-Hasn’t not doesn’t, sorry!
Some bloke
February 7th, 2013 - 9:12pmoh I’ve just read above, thats such a shame, but then again, it maybe ok!!
Adipose333
