Is it usually allowed for staff members/managers of the shop to be allowed to take “Several” sets for “Themselves” and have them “Put to one side for later”…. Just curious….

On another, more positive note and NOT related to the above as that was a different branch, Netherfield in Nottingham has got plenty of 5th & TARDIS, Friends of 13, U.N.I.T Soldiers and 4th’s companions version 2

B&M staff can buy whatever they want. They get 10% off too with their discount. One of the perks of the job I suppose.

I’m surprised more staff don’t buy stock to sell on ebay given the money you can make.

So, this is what a Doctor Who fan has to put up with. My son is well into the classic series at has starting to collect the Daleks as he absolutely loves them. The first 3 sets (War, 7th & 8th) weren’t a problem and the History #1 & #2 he managed to get – just.
Now, he is only 16 and has learning difficulties. Has started a weekend job to earn money so he can buy his own things and us, his parents don’t earn a lot and can’t really afford these sets.
He helped out other people who couldn’t get the war sets etc and only asked for cost price plus the postage.
As he was spending a lot on these sets, we said would you like the History #3 & #4 sets for his birthday. After finding none in the area, I had to disappoint him, which he could not understand why B&M had not had them. He really wanted them and was about to buy them off eBay for triple the price!!! That was before I stopped him and calmed him down. I said to him, on the Facebook page you’re on, ask who you helped out before, see if they could help. Surprise surprise, no response. Only offer he had was someone said they wanted £10 over the retail price (but included postage) but as he wanted 2 sets each (4 sets) we asked for a reduction in postage cost but the seller didn’t have none of it. So instead of him paying £80, it cost £120. I know it doesn’t seem a lot but to a 16 year old it is.
Now, these other new sets are out, he is getting very down about some places came out on the day of release and nothing here yet – not since the first wave. Money is precious and he is hoping not to have to resort paying more than he has to.
I myself are another Whovian but I don’t collect due to this reason and very rarely put any comments on websites or forums. I only go on here to keep checking for updates for him.
    Long rant over.

Can anyone help? I will be visiting B and M stores next week, I will be glad to help for cost price plus postage if I can. Not sure of the rules on this website regarding direct contact with other members, but if you’re still struggling next week please mention it here.

Well, to be honest I’ve see mixed messages about John and some of the prices. If it’s to help fans out why make money off of it? Yeah OK, you could spend money on fuel searching but that’s down to yourself personally and whether you want to spend extra to put in someone elses back pocket. Like I said, my son helped out before only asking for what it costs in store and the exact postage to send. In which the takers he had were all very pleased with as he wasn’t money grabbing.

After the success of the Jungles of Mechanus Dalek set it is a shame that Character cannot offer these as online exclusives. I would happily pay £24.99 plus postage just to be able to get these sets. They could do one a month with the 5000 limited run and know that they would be snapped up. If B&M really supported these so called exclusives they need to get the distribution sorted. They have learnt nothing or cannot be bothered to learn anything from the last wave of figures.

That’s what I was thinking! Plus, people don’t need to worry about going outside as you could order them on CO website. It would’ve been easier for ALL of us if they were CO exclusives.

Or even if they would just push the release date back and release them in Forbidden Planet/Amazon like the figures earlier this year…

    • Anonymous

      November 25th, 2020 - 7:45pm

I totally agree, should be online to buy, one a month would be fantastic. Unfortunately B&M are not a toy shop, they are exclusive sets but the store is just a general store selling many items that don t have to have a fixed release date. Don’t think it’s a case of being bothered or learning anything, it’s just the way the business is run, stocking items as and when, and in no particular hurry to stock the shevles. Maybe forbidden planet or smiths toys would be a more realistic option, if not online.

    • daz

      November 26th, 2020 - 8:19am

Unfortunately these wouldn’t sell out as a Character Online exclusive as they are just re-releases. They would end up like the Missy figures and be hard to shift. Character need to choose carefully what their next exclusive is -maybe a Cyberman pack featuring the ones yet to be released (Pre 2017).

Doctor Who is pretty much a ‘dead’ toy brand as far as Smyths is concerned. Same no doubt with Argos as they couldn’t shift the Recon Dalek until they dropped it down to a fiver.

Yes the distribution of the previous wave was awful for those in certain areas but without B&M putting the money in there would be no Classic Doctor Who Toy range. And it’s been said before, their business model relies on footfall. They want people to pop in and buy more than just these figures.

I was in my local store today and I was talking to the guy that orders the stock in. There was loads of all this year’s sets on the shelves and has been for a while . I asking if they sell well and he told me “yes” and I asked about redistribution and he says the stock that dosnt sell just gets reduced and nothing goes anywhere else.

For info, none of the new ones to be found in Somerset. I’ve tried Yeovil, Shepton Mallet, Frome and Taunton, even went over the border to Warminster with no joy. I emailed B&M customer services who were useless, they said “The Doctor Who sets are currently on sale in our stores.” Not anywhere down south, they’re not!!

Only Snipe Retail Park in Ashton and Hill Road in Oldham had a case (about 10) of the Witch’s Familiar Sets. Didn’t look like any Remembrance sets had been out as the shelves were full of pretty much every other set from this year in all stores. Hope this helps someone.

B&M in Snipe Retail Park in Ashton and B&M in Oldham Hill Street both seemed to have a case (about 10) of Witch’s Familiar sets on the shelves which were full so didn’t look like anyone else had been there and cleared out the Remembrance sets. But these were the only stores across Oldham, Rochdale and Ashton that had them. Must just be pot luck which cases if any get opened.

But loads of stock of all other sets from this year in pretty much all locations. Hope this helps someone.

    • booboo

      November 24th, 2020 - 4:57pm

It specifically states in the post we are in lockdown and you should only be going out for essentials, B&M are open and can sell whatever they want under current guidelines.

Its not peoples fault B&M make it so difficult to find stock in the current situation.

    • Independently Cross

      November 25th, 2020 - 8:43am

What’s ‘essential’ to an individual as we struggle through this situation isn’t cut-and-dried. If you have running water, loo roll probably isn’t technically essential- but few would be chastised for shopping for (appropriate quantities of) that right now.
Collectors, who may only be able to afford and source these on immediate release, didn’t choose the sale date. We definitely don’t choose the method of exclusively in-person distribution. We certainly don’t choose to be unable to confirm stock without multiple, time and distance consuming visits. We are aware, anonymous, of how far from ideal it is to have to endeavour in this way.
We’re all trying to keep the low level of PTSD and depression of an international pandemic at bay with reasonable distractions. One method of doing that, our collecting ‘habit’, which keeps this line active, is really straining us in the current circumstances, already. As somebody who can count on one hand the other places I’ve visited since March, I’m as accutely aware as anyone that this situation is not OK. But it does no good to chastise. We’re backed into a stressful corner here. If these products didn’t mean so much to us, we wouldn’t be on this page or adding ourselves stress in an already stressful year. It’s unreasonable to make demands of this site when it provides information that can actively reduce risk by notifying of un/worthy trips.

No new stock in the two Hayes branches yesterday.

      November 25th, 2020 - 9:03am

for the record i agree with much of what you say about peoples well being, and god knows i can relate that right now, but as a general point i totally disagree with shops and supermarkets being able to carry on selling the same goods as shops that have been forced to close, i always believe in a level playing field.

B&M’s profits have doubled this year, its easy to why.

    • Independently Cross

      November 26th, 2020 - 10:35am

(Yep. Absolutely no disagreement from me that the arrangements this year have very, very much not resulted in equality or level playing.)
