October 10th, 2015 - 6:01pmTechnically, the BBC only allow into the ‘official’ canon things which can be broadcast – this includes the audio dramas which are often broadcast on BBC radio 4 extra.
In story, the Big Finish companions of the Eighth Doctor were referenced in the minisode “The Night of the Doctor”, which means that at least some aspects of them are canon.
However, canon is, in Doctor Who at least, in the eye of the beholder.

October 12th, 2015 - 6:58pmIt depends on your point of view. Is a fleeting mention allowing them to be canon? If this is the case, then the range of Virgin and BBC books must also be canon as they have also been fleetingly referenced in the series since it came back in 2005.
If you think Big finish is canon, then the books must be too.

October 12th, 2015 - 8:37pm100000BC is right in that in the Doctor Who universe, canon is in the eye of the beholder because, unlike Star War and Marvel etc, the BBC nor the show runners have ever actually stipulated what is canon and what is not – yes, they are very strict with what licences allow etc…but they never confirm what is canon because they dont want to box themselves into anything. Therefore when it comes to BF dramas and Virgin books etc…it really is left to the fans to decide whether it is canon or not. That said, I know SM is a big fan of the BF dramas and I believe the references to 8’s BF companions is his way of saying that he considers those stories canon.
Personally, I think its fairly easy to combine BBC TV shows and BF audio dramas into the same universe…it becomes a little more difficult to work the books into the universe.

Is it too much to ask having a female actor be the main focus of her own range? C’mon Big Finish, sort it out.
