Big Finish listeners and fans of Doctor Who toys were delighted by the announcement in June that three sets of Big Finish Character Options action figures would be available from B&M retail stores in the UK this summer.

The full 2019 line of collectable Doctor Who figures and sets were unveiled on Character Options’ own YouTube channel [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShHZtC_9au0&t=6s] in an unboxing-style video presented by the firm’s Creative Director, Al Dewar.

The B&M version left and the Big Finish version right…

And now that the three sets have been fully revealed, as a treat for Big Finish listeners, a limited supply are available to buy from www.bigfinish.com. These figures are available for both UK and overseas customers. But be quick! Once they are gone, they’re gone!

Amongst these great new collectables, the three unique Doctor and Dalek twin packs inspired by Big Finish stories are:

The Eighth Doctor and Dalek Interrogator Prime Action Figure Set – showing the fully articulated Doctor dressed in jeans and double breasted jacket from Dark Eyes, plus an Interrogator Dalek which the Eighth Doctor faces in the Time War.

The War Doctor and Dalek Scientist Action Figure Set – containing the Doctor as played by John Hurt in the War Doctor audio episodes, whilst the Dalek included is a scientist and works independently of High Command.

The Seventh Doctor and Axis Strike Squad Dalek Action Figure Set – featuring the Time Lord as played by Sylvester McCoy in the Gallifrey VI series with one of the bronze Daleks that have taken over the AXIS.

Nicholas Briggs, executive producer of Big Finish, told us how he felt about Big Finish’s first action figures: “There’s something magical about the Character Options Doctor Who figures, and not just because I bought boxes and boxes of them for my son! I’ve always felt that they were made with great love and with the fans in mind – much like Big Finish stories.

“Al Dewar from Character Options and I have kept up a dialogue, virtually since Doctor Who returned to TV back in 2005, so it’s really great that this has finally come together. What do you mean, you don’t believe I bought the figures for my son? I mean, I’ve never played with them myself… never… ever… Well, maybe there was just that one time…”

Jason Haigh-Ellery, executive producer of Big Finish, added: “Thanks to Character Options we finally have action figures representing characterisations of the Doctor as heard in Big Finish’s audio drama. I was very excited to see these first sets take shape, and I look forward to seeing many more in the future!”

Al Dewar commented: “It was huge fun to reveal by video the entire new collection. We are incredibly proud of this summer 2019 line up and believe that the fans will be equally delighted with each product that is to be launched. Our loyal following of collectors are always keen to gain a first glimpse of what’s new and doing this in such a personal style was important to us. The next stage is to see the range in stores!”

The three Big Finish-inspired sets are now available in a very limited supply. They are available ONLY as a bundle together priced at just £59.99, with an additional £10 courier shipping fee for the UK, or £30 for overseas shipping.

These sets are strictly limited to ONE per customer.

For those who reside in the UK, these sets will also be available from your local B&M retail store later this month.

After emailing Big Finish about how these vary from the standard releaase, they said, and I quote, “The order you have placed is for the Big Finish variants and we have been advised that the differences are in the paint colours used that are slightly different to the sets that will be available from B&M stores later this month.”

I only ordered these from Big Finish because I thought it would save some stress traipsing round numerous B&M stores trying to find them (I remember it took me ages to track down all the Toys R Us Doctor and Dalek sets). I didn’t realise there’d been a mere 20 minute window of opportunity.

there seems a reluctance to give details on exactly what these variants are although it is on record that they are different to the B&M ones.

The press release made no mention of it so i think we will have to wait until they arrive to see.

Booboo, the images you have in the 3 BF posts look to have no weathering on the Daleks – are these photos of the actual variants?

The War Doctor’s waistcoat in this image looks a different colour to the one in the image you have on another thread (the one with the 8th Doctor, Cyberman and Sontaran).

the pictures were sent by BF along with the press release.
I think they have said they are the B&M releases as they did not have access to their stock to take images.

They look like they are taken with flash which aften “drowns out” some of the weathering effect and makes colours look brighter.

I don’t think we can read to much into the pictures and will have to wait for them to arrive

With only 150 on offer no matter what BF did a lot of people would have missed out.

If they had given a date/time there would have been well over 150 true fans on-line, plus a whole load of scalpers with multiple accounts.

Anyone who missed out in such an event would feel aggrieved as they would have taken time out from work/whatever to be logged on, and chances are a good few scalpers would have got in on the deal.

A lottery could have been employed, but that is a big overhead for BF for no extra return.

BF at least limited purchases to one per person.

I’m very surprised they were no more expensive than the B&M sets – I thought they would have carried a premium, but then if as rumoured the only difference is some weathering (or rather a lack of it) a bigger price would have been hard to justify.

agreed! 100% the outrage on this has been completely irrational. i can understand people are disappointed, but as you say, with only 150 of each set there was never going to be enough to satisfy everyone, some people were lucky, some were not. i think what people also need to realise is that even there are many who missed out, in the grand scheme of things it’s probably a very very tiny percentage – the fact is, Doctor Who doesn’t sell as much as it used to, and i bet even if big finish did 500 of these sets, there’d still be some left over. big finish, in this instance where their commitment to doing the sets was a risk, probably chose only 150 for that very reason – now that they’ve seen how successful it’s been, and depending on the sales on the b&m sets in store (and this is the most important aspect), they will up their order of exclusives sets if anymore are produced in the future.
but this whole thing has brought out the ugly self-entitled aspect of fandom which isn’t nice to see. it’s a shame, but that’s capitalism for ya – slagging off big finish, as many are doing, is just nasty and bitter.

I don’t know about anybody else but I’m happy to spend my money on the condition that I know exactly what I’m buying.

No-one seems to know how these exclusive BF versions differ from the tens of thousands of them that will no doubt hit BM stores in a few weeks time.

I saw the link on Facebook and, don’t get me wrong, I was very tempted to buy them but there was zero info detailing what made these figures so special and by the time I’d ummmed-errred about it, they were sold out. But, Who knows, it may be a bit of a blessing in disguise…

At most it will probably be to do with the detailing on the daleks e.g. weathering

I’m a genuine collector, I also work and can’t check Twitter all day or else I’d get fired. I think the timing was a bit unfair and excluded many people. We’ll see how many turn up on Ebay, I suspect over 50%

Strange – if these really are the 150 BF-exclusive variants then I’d really expected an announcement first about an on sale time and date to give everyone a chance of trying for one? Blogger Who’s news piece about them selling out reads a bit like these are the standard B&M mass-release ones that BF have for a handful of early (they are really reassuring their readers ‘don’t worry these will be out in B&M). But if this is the ‘150 variant sets’ sale, then it has been disappointingly handled for sure.

Blogter Who got the same press release we did, difference we knew about and therefore double checked these were definitely variants.

Sites got very little warning as well, is suspect they didn’t want a deluge and site crash with a pre-warning.

There will be reason I’m sure why all of this was as it was but internal policy are not generally discussed.

    • Davros’_secretary

      August 7th, 2019 - 7:24pm

It really is bad planning that BF and CO didn’t even confirm what the differences are between the BF sets and the general masse released versions at B&M.

And to not even announce when the pre-orders would go live is really harsh on many collectors/fans. If people are at work, not everyone is able to check their phones or laptops during working hours, particularly as no announcement had been made.

I suspect there will be many, many fans angry at both BF and CO for the way they’ve handled this situation.

    • booboo

      August 7th, 2019 - 7:33pm

works both ways, guarantee you if a pre-announcement had been made far more would have ended up on ebay than in the hands of genuine collectors.

As for not telling anyone, well i believe most companies now find social media the most effective “instant” way of letting people know about new products, that’s the way the world has gone.

Not defending anyone, just the way it is, BF are probably totally taken aback as to how quickly these sold not having not had any experience with this and are probably just as surprised as to the backlash now going on, they are just not used to it.

    • The ergon

      August 7th, 2019 - 9:54pm

The thing is all the ones that missed out might have preferred some to end up on Ebay when they are delivered just so it gave them at least a small chance of getting their hands on them. Not much chance unless someone has bought more than one. I don,t see there being much between them.I mean last year they released figure packs and a month a so later they release slight variations on the same figures. They may well do so again and can be slightly annoying because most will want to rush out and get the first wave of sets thinking they will miss out.

    • booboo

      August 7th, 2019 - 10:07pm

They re-ordred because of good sales on the initial batch but are now struggling to sell them and have in fact reduced them, i don’t see this happening again and they appear to have the quantities of these new sets about right.

  • The Silent Silent

    August 7th, 2019 - 4:34pm

With you on this 100%. Big Finish and Character KNEW there would be massive interest in these and yet they both announced this early afternoon on a Wednesday when many people would’ve been at work and only those fortunate enough to check either this site or BF’s would’ve been lucky enough to get an order placed.

It’s shockingly poor planning and it’s no surprise that fans such as you and I are frustrated and disappointed.

They were cheaper than i thought even though they were only tweaked slightly. had no idea these had gone up at all and i thought i might have seen them as i ordered one of their CD boxsets yesterday. To be honest its not these dalek packs i,m after just the figure and TARDIS sets. I,m vey selective as i,m slowly running out of space again.
I can understand some people may be miffed but i can,t see much difference between these and the mass market dalek sets.

On the unboxing they show an unweatherd version of this Dalek and weathered. They did the same with The 8th Doctor Figure. I’m guessing the weathered will be the Big Finish exclusive but if that’s the case not sure why they’re now showing them on the website.
