Big Finish Doctor Who Licence Renewed

Doctor Who Licence Renewed

From www.bigfinish.com

Big Finish is delighted to announce that its licence with AudioGO to make Doctor Who on audio has been extended up to December 2015. “I’m so excited that we can continue our voyages with the Doctor for at least another three years,” says Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery, “and so pleased that AudioGO and the BBC continue to trust us with the telling of these stories.”

“It’s been a privilege and a pleasure for me to have worked on the Doctor Who audio range since 1999,” adds executive producer Nicholas Briggs. “I’m looking forward to continuing the excellent relationship we have with AudioGO and the BBC – and, of course, to the many exciting adventures for the Doctor I’ll be working on over the next three years or more.”

“We’re already making plans for 2015,” says line producer David Richardson, “which will be the sixteenth year of Doctor Who audio productions from Big Finish and include our landmark 200th main range play!

“In addition to the Doctor Who main range and Companion Chronicles, we are working through ideas for an exciting new range which we hope to announce during 2013.”

Big Finish do produce brilliant Doctor Who stories. It would be a tragedy if they lost the lisence to make Doctor Who. No-one is more worthy of carrying classic Doctor Who on their back, and no-one could do it better. Apart from the beeb making new TV stories, but that’s not going to happen.

Although i now read this doe not apply to big finish

The terms of our licence with the BBC allow us to only produced ‘Classic’ Doctor Who. This means that we can only use the first eight Doctors and their companions. Anything connected to the new series – even characters who are no longer featured – cannot be used by us in a Big Finish Doctor Who production. Actors from the series do often appear in audio adventures as different characters, however, and before he landed the role of the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant featured in eight Big Finish productions as assorted characters.

But then again the rules seem to have changed, the Ninth Doctor is rather explicitly mentioend to be in one of the plays (although he doesn’t actually say anything) and there was also a ban on characters that had been featured in both versions of the show that no longer applies to them as has been shown with Davros (which would appear to match up with them getting the RTD licence). PLus the BBC Wales team have banned them featuring certain parts of their storylines (like the TIme War) which wouldn’t be a problem is they didn’t have a licence.

It’s a rather grey area, but it seems like most of the “licencing issues” are actually just self imposed restrictions on how they are going to use it.

Big Finish have been simply awesome in keeping Doctor Who alive, and at times have bettered the 2005+ televisual series. There is no company more worthy of a Doctor Who franchise than them.

I doubt it because they have asked before and audiogo refused to give big finish the license for the new series

That’s not the case, they’ve got the licence, but choose not to use it. Besides, Eccelston wouldn’t do anything for love nor money. Those directors and producers wound him up so badly he doesn’t want anything to do with the show any more.

In a very recent question Q and A session he has said “there is more to do with his Doctor” and openly talked about the role – may be there is a glimmer of hope.

There is a whole thread on GB about it.
