Big Finish Dark Gallifrey The War Master Part 2

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

A unique archaeological team-up seeks Dark Gallifrey

Lisa Bowerman, David Warner, James Marsters, and Sir Derek Jacobi star in Dark Gallifrey: The War Master, a trilogy of full-cast audio dramas beginning in July 2024.

Many have sought the legendary Dark Gallifrey over the millennia, Professor Bernice Summerfield and Captain John Hart among them. But there is another who has his eyes on that glittering prize; one who knows how such power could be wielded – the War Master himself!

The second trilogy in Big Finish Productions’ epic event series brings together a variety of heroes and anti-heroes from across the Doctor Who universe as they search for Dark Gallifrey, a legendary alternative version of the Time Lords’ home planet.

Leading the search is Professor Bernice Summerfield (Lisa Bowerman), assisted in Part 1 by her regular companion, a parallel universe version of the Doctor (David Warner – in his final appearance for Big Finish, recorded before he passed away in 2022).

But there are rogues who seek Dark Gallifrey for their own nefarious purposes, including Captain John Hart (James Marsters, reprising his role from the Torchwood TV and audio series). And, of course, the War Master (Sir Derek Jacobi) has a plan…

The third instalment in the trilogy also guest stars Jonathon Carley as the War Doctor, as events spiral out of control and bring the Master into conflict with his arch-nemesis.

Each part of Dark Gallifrey: The War Master is now available for pre-order as a single-disc collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £10.99) or download only (for just £8.99).

The three episodes, all written by James Goss, are:

Part 1, due for release in July

Intrigued by rumours of a hidden Gallifrey – the Dark Gallifrey of Time Lord myth – Bernice Summerfield resolves to find it.

But as the Doctor points out, some things should never be found, and some doors should never be opened. Especially ones that want to be…

Part 2, due for release in August

Amid the dreaming spires of Braxiatel University, Benny is dividing her time between her lectures, her cats, and managing the romantic advances of one of her students, John.

The new Provost – such a nice old man – doesn’t approve of their dalliance, and advises her not to get involved. For John wants to know about Dark Gallifrey, which is something Benny has done her best to forget, and thinks he can help her find it again.

The funny thing is, the dear old Provost wants to find it first…

Part 3, due for release in September

The Master and Captain John are trapped amid the ruins of Dark Gallifrey, where familiar faces and infinite impossibilities gather.

With his dream of the ultimate weapon almost within his grasp, the Master revels in the chaos. But all roads lead… to the Imbomination.

Producer Scott Handcock said: “David Richardson asked me to do a Dark Gallifrey box set with the War Master, and there were certain other characters he wanted in the mix. So I turned to James, with a Terrance Dicks-style Five Doctors shopping list, and asked, can you work up a story featuring the War Master, Captain John Hart, Bernice Summerfield, and the David Warner Doctor, and even a little cameo from the young War Doctor? Very quickly, he came up with a storyline that accommodated everyone, that made sense and celebrated those combinations of characters.”

Writer James Goss added: “Only Big Finish would be able to go, ‘We’ll get that man from Buffy and that national treasure and we’ll have them acting together’. They’re both great actors but from very different worlds.

“I love the idea that the War Master is the effective Master. All the other Masters come with ridiculous, overarching plans which never come to fruition, but the War Master is meticulous – when he makes a shopping list, he sits down and goes – kale, must it be kale? Captain John is the anathema to the Master. He’s never had a plan in his life. They both have a different approach to their goals, they’re forced to work together, and it doesn’t quite work.”

Big Finish listeners can pre-order all six of 2024’s Dark Gallifrey instalments – which includes the War Master trilogy as well as the previous trilogy focusing on Morbius – for just £60 (on collector’s edition CD + download) or £50 (download only).

The complete Dark Gallifrey pre-order bundle, including all eight trilogies, each following a different renegade Time Lord, is just £210 (on collector’s edition CD + download) or £188 (download only).

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Dark Gallifrey is one of Big finishes BEST ranges in years. A narrative structure spanning all doctor who’s era and bringing characters together in very reasonable situations, god forbid characters with access to all of time and space wouldnt take advantage of the doctors closest friends.

I’m so tired of people complaining about “crossover”………….did we not just have a season finale with Mel (6-7th doctor) meeting sutekh (a 4th doctor monster) with kate stewart (an 11th doctor era character)

rewind to the 60th a crossover of the 10th doctors era with 1st and 4th doctor monsters

rewind to power of the doctor, master, daleks, cybermen, ace, Tegan, doctor 1,5,6,7,8

If you dont like, dont buy but come on lets stop the same 5 comments about something big finish has been doing for well over a decade…………its tiresome.

TV crossovers are rare. Big finish on the other hand…

Nah its massively oversaturated now. Practically every story the do is a multi doctor story and the novelty has worn off.

I’m guessing they now play to their core regular customers rather than trying to still bring in new buyers all the time. It clearly works for them.

Big finish was crystal clear that this range was a CROSSOVER event series.

SPOILER: And the War Master wasn’t even in the first part of the War Master 3 parter and wasn’t mentioned (unless I missed something!)

Its called a trilogy……………..not every character has to appear in all three. morbius was barely in the first part of his…………….

Yes – I know what a trilogy is! However not even a mention, let alone a one second appearance isn’t what it says on the tin. If someone had bought this without reading the synopsis first (I didn’t think that this was mandatory) would IMO be justifiably miffed. I thought that Big Finish were pushing their luck with how limited Sylvester McCoy was in the Last Day, but this took the biscuit

Minor spoiler ahead – if you listened to the story and the interviews after you would know the reason the master is not there as part 1 takes place later in the whole story arch and is a major catalyst for events to come.

The actions of the unbound doctor and benny left a rip that others could use to access dark gallifrey, if the master was already there……why on earth would he then need benny to access dark gallifrey.

people are getting to bogged down on the three parters – this is a huge story that we are trust starting, things will make sense later.

There was a clue that the master didnt appear – he aint on the cover or in the cast list! goodness me………

You are missing the point! If the overall structure is fluid (and I don’t have a problem that it is), then just have a one part called the Unbound Doctor instead. Even you mentioned that Morbius wasn’t in the first part of that trilogy much (but at least he WAS in it!). Checking the cast list (or the cover) shouldn’t be a pre-requisite for getting what in theory you have paid for.

Knowing that these are three parters, it didn’t surprise me at all that part 1 of both was essentially set up for the next two

tbh i was more annoyed with legacy of time bringing the doctors together for 7 minutes of an 8 hour “epic”, that was a misrepresented story then this!

and lets not forget ravenous 4, promises of 4 masters vs the doctor in 1 boxset and it was fleeting appearance in the last 2 parts! unfortunately i think expectation can cause disappointment. maybe im in a minority, but i would rather have david warner hold 50% of the story then have to split 33% between Jacobi and benny. we also dont know how davids health impacted this trilogy, seems odd to have john in the last 2 with no appearance in the 1st, maybe a rewrite occurred

this range is also revolves around “bad timelords” so you cant have a unbound named episode.
