Claws of Axos OR Green Death. Can’t decide out of those two!

      March 16th, 2015 - 11:12pm

Claws of Axos, The Green Death and The Dæmons.

I love the third one the most personally; three classic stories lovingly restored with some top notch features. There is something quite HD like about The Tomb of the Cybermen SE that no other release seems to have, it’s very crisp looking!

oh im ordering trial of a timelord and revisitations 3

    • Gavros

      March 16th, 2015 - 6:59pm

I’d say the 3rd set. Tomb of the Cybermen is amazing, the Three Doctors is fun and I love Omega, and the Robots of Death is just superb! Although the 1st set (although I don’t own it yet I’ve seen all three) is brilliant as well! But you made a great choice with the 3rd set!

    • The Twelfth Doctor

My favourite is the 2nd set.

    • skaroman

      March 16th, 2015 - 1:53pm

TCFTP is a very good story of business, monopoly and the line between monster and victim.

I recommend you watch it as it is a good example of 1979 Doctor Who.

    • JellyBaby100

      March 16th, 2015 - 4:02pm

If you can excuse the monster that looks like a phallic green weather balloon, then it’s still terrible. (At least according to the DWM survey: http://doctoroo.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/from-d
      octor-who-magazines-first-50.html)

    • matparks08

      March 16th, 2015 - 6:35pm

I’ll go out on a limb and say…I don’t find any of the stories terrible. I find Creature a well written, well acted (even by Lalla Ward), good charactered and funny story. The effects are as good as the budget would allow at the time (after the spending on City of Death). Each to their own, but I love it…and Timelash too, but let’s not go there 😉 The problem with surveys is they then dictate which stories we’re supposed to like. I think we should just decide ourselves

    • The Twelfth Doctor

      March 16th, 2015 - 11:14pm

      I really like it TBH.

  • skaroman

    March 15th, 2015 - 8:51pm

Well, looks like BBC shop aren’t sharing any information regarding a release date for ‘The Underwater Menace’ yet.

Plus: I really like the ‘Lost stories’ audio boxsets. But I wish they would come down in price. I mean £59.99 ? Why not sell them separately? I mean we want to listen to these, but not for that price!

Just had another look: There are a few mistakes in these lists:

      1) They’ve stated that you can only get ‘Doctor Who and the Silurians’ with ‘The silurians’ boxset released in 2013 – they haven’t said about the ‘Beneath the surface’ boxset for this one.

      2) They haven’t included the ‘Legacy Collection’ boxset

      3) They haven’t included ‘Frontios’

    • PedroPete

      March 15th, 2015 - 9:42pm

and Davison is spelt wrong! 🙁

    • JellyBaby100

      March 16th, 2015 - 4:04pm

I think the logic of ‘Doctor Who’ and the Silurians is that it’s available both in the Silurians box set and the Beneath the Surface boxset, but the Silurians boxset is cheaper so if you only want ‘Doctor Who’ and the Silurians you’re better off with that one. You can tell because they’ve listed The Sea Devils and Warriors of the Deep as Beneath the Surface boxset.

I have taken the opportunity to purchase The Enemy of the World, The Moonbase and Scream of the Shalka. I was a bit apprehensive about paying a great deal for each of them, as the former two could well end up with special editions down the line and the latter is just an add-on to the extensive range.

For a fiver apiece, you can’t go wrong though!

    • Sam Richard Bentley

      March 15th, 2015 - 6:11pm

Actually – thanks for the advice, but I think I’m going to go with Inferno. It’s the one that seems to stand out to me the most.

    • Lifefoot

      March 15th, 2015 - 6:30pm

I would also go with The Green Death. It’s a great story and the special edition is chock full of goodies.

I think The Mind of Evil is an underrated gem, a gritty thriller that feels very original in 50+ years of Doctor Who goodness. I do like Inferno a great deal, but I do think it is two parts too long, though the special edition has some great features.

    • The Monitor

      March 15th, 2015 - 7:59pm

All three are great for different reasons. The Green Death is probably the most “fun” and watch-able, The Mind of Evil the most frightening, but Inferno is probably the dramatic best, so well written and directed. If you watch it without distraction, it is a very tense and serious drama.

Going back 25 years, I argued that The Daemons was the best Pertwee and my older friends stated it was Inferno – it seemed to be a two horse race in fandom – bit like the Oxford/Cambridge boat race. In the last ten years I have now decided it is Inferno of the two, and only one other Pertwee tops it slightly and that is Spearhead.

Anyone else think it’s odd how they have boxsets included in the 3 for £15 offer, even though there’s a offer on boxsets anyway?

I think I’m going to take advantage of that 3 for £15 though, to get Scream of the Shalka, K9 Tales and one other, need to decide on that last one.

    Reply
    • Lifefoot

      March 15th, 2015 - 6:25pm

The boxsets available in the 3 for £15 offer are sort of anomalies in the range. K9 Tales includes a poorly regarded story and an extension to the range in the form of K9 & Company. The Legacy Set contains Shada, the infamous unfinished story, and another extension to the range, More Than Thirty Years in the TARDIS.

Both sets are more of an odds and sods collection than anything else, less appeal, therefore a lower price. I love both though!

    Reply
    • Lifefoot

      March 15th, 2015 - 6:28pm

I don’t think there will be an end to it. The range is all but finished, with the exception of The Underwater Menace and any discovered stories, so retailers will now be looking to get rid of stock before the releases are classed as deleted. The range has been going on for a good 15 years now (10 if you don’t count the initial releases which have been re-released as special editions), which is a terribly long time.

The range has brought us some excellent content and has had a great life.

    • JellyBaby100

      March 15th, 2015 - 9:35pm

Don’t know if this is good or bad. I’ve only just started my Classic Doctor Who collection, so this means I don’t have to spend as much money, but surely they won’t just stop selling them? There’s always going to be demand for Classic Doctor Who DVDs, right?

    • Lifefoot

      March 16th, 2015 - 6:51pm

The market is only relatively niche and the range has been going on for a long time now. Every DVD ceases production at some point, but you will stick be able to purchase them, stock permitting.
