Latest episode of unleashed previewed a bunch of sonic colours, so we now have blue, red, light blue, lime, orange and purple. If we’re getting a gold sonic I can easily see multiple variants of this one coming out, and why not reuse the sculpt.

    Ok. Slightly weird one.

Does anybody by chance have “The Dalek Collection” DVD in their collection? (The 2006 Optimum / Studio Canal release with the grey Dalek on the front)

If so, is Disc 2 faulty? I came by one a few weeks ago and Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 AD plays fine, but I noticed that the Dalekmania documentary is missing the whole bit with Michael Wisher at the cinema at the beginning (including the documentary’s opening titles). It jumps from the Lumiere logo straight to Roberta Tovey reading in the clip from the first movie.

Admittedly it is a very clean cut, but it does shorten the documentary by approximately two minutes. Even more bizarrely, the time stamp jumps from about 23 seconds to 2 minutes, 11 seconds, and when I try to rewind it just gets stuck and refuses to go back!

By pure chance, today I came by a second totally separate copy. I took a chance on it, only to find that this one once again plays the movie fine, but as soon as it loads it goes straight to the movie skipping both the copyright warnings and the disc menu!

When I press the menu button on the remote, it does go to the menu and I can of course play the movie and go into scene selection, but when I click on Dalekmania, it plays the movie not the documentary!!!

I can’t seem to find any info online, I’m genuinely puzzled. Is it possible that all these discs are faulty? I’ve never had two totally separate copies of a DVD both have similar problems.

Also just wanted to add that both discs are free from dirt, scuffs and scratches. I have also thoroughly cleaned both but to no avail.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks. 🙂

Yes, the disc is faulty. You are better of getting the two newer individual releases as they feature the full (no faults) dalekmania documentary and some other bits not on the original DVD release or the grey release

I remember the problem with Dalekmania, and also that even Kevin Davies was annoyed by it. I also remember that there were some quite outlandish theories going around… (It couldn’t just be a regular snafu for some people.)

Unfortunately all the Dalek film discs had issues until the 2013 versions, but I’ve never heard about the problem with your second Optimum copy. It does sound like how a player tries to handle a faulty disc though – if the surface is fine then it could be a bad pressing, something during manufacture that affected the area with the menu structure.

Thank you both so much for getting back to me, that has definitely helped to make sense of the situation! 🙂

Any DWM subscribers not received this month’s copy yet? First time in a few months for me where it’s not come either the day before or the day of publication.

All three icon books have now been delayed. Two are still coming this year but later and the third is March 25.
