Big Finish listeners and fans of Doctor Who toys were delighted by the announcement in June that three sets of Big Finish Character Options action figures would be available from B&M retail stores in the UK this summer.
The full 2019 line of collectable Doctor Who figures and sets were unveiled on Character Options’ own YouTube channel [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShHZtC_9au0&t=6s] in an unboxing-style video presented by the firm’s Creative Director, Al Dewar.
The B&M version left and the Big Finish version right…
And now that the three sets have been fully revealed, as a treat for Big Finish listeners, a limited supply are available to buy from www.bigfinish.com. These figures are available for both UK and overseas customers. But be quick! Once they are gone, they’re gone!
Amongst these great new collectables, the three unique Doctor and Dalek twin packs inspired by Big Finish stories are:
The Eighth Doctor and Dalek Interrogator Prime Action Figure Set – showing the fully articulated Doctor dressed in jeans and double breasted jacket from Dark Eyes, plus an Interrogator Dalek which the Eighth Doctor faces in the Time War.
The War Doctor and Dalek Scientist Action Figure Set – containing the Doctor as played by John Hurt in the War Doctor audio episodes, whilst the Dalek included is a scientist and works independently of High Command.
The Seventh Doctor and Axis Strike Squad Dalek Action Figure Set – featuring the Time Lord as played by Sylvester McCoy in the Gallifrey VI series with one of the bronze Daleks that have taken over the AXIS.
Nicholas Briggs, executive producer of Big Finish, told us how he felt about Big Finish’s first action figures: “There’s something magical about the Character Options Doctor Who figures, and not just because I bought boxes and boxes of them for my son! I’ve always felt that they were made with great love and with the fans in mind – much like Big Finish stories.
“Al Dewar from Character Options and I have kept up a dialogue, virtually since Doctor Who returned to TV back in 2005, so it’s really great that this has finally come together. What do you mean, you don’t believe I bought the figures for my son? I mean, I’ve never played with them myself… never… ever… Well, maybe there was just that one time…”
Jason Haigh-Ellery, executive producer of Big Finish, added: “Thanks to Character Options we finally have action figures representing characterisations of the Doctor as heard in Big Finish’s audio drama. I was very excited to see these first sets take shape, and I look forward to seeing many more in the future!”
Al Dewar commented: “It was huge fun to reveal by video the entire new collection. We are incredibly proud of this summer 2019 line up and believe that the fans will be equally delighted with each product that is to be launched. Our loyal following of collectors are always keen to gain a first glimpse of what’s new and doing this in such a personal style was important to us. The next stage is to see the range in stores!”
The three Big Finish-inspired sets are now available in a very limited supply. They are available ONLY as a bundle together priced at just £59.99, with an additional £10 courier shipping fee for the UK, or £30 for overseas shipping.
These sets are strictly limited to ONE per customer.
For those who reside in the UK, these sets will also be available from your local B&M retail store later this month.

August 17th, 2019 - 8:42pmRidiculous. Even more so to the person who bought them and think bits of plastic are at all worth £200.

August 19th, 2019 - 9:22amThis seems to be a growing trend. Lots of other items also selling out much faster than they used to. The recent Robert Harrop figures and the Big Chief 3rd Doctor figure as well. Snapped up very quickly. The 3rd Doctor was a £250 run of 500 figures and yet sold out within a couple of weeks.
As for these very limited Big Finish versions… no comment. I’d say any classic era releases + any very limited edition items from any era will sell out sooner than most people would expect. If you collect any of them then don’t give let yourself debate too long about buying them. Wait too long and you’ll probably miss out. I’ve missed out on 2 out of the 3 I’ve mentioned.
I guess there’s many more Doctor Who fans around these days. Good news for the tv series and any new merchandise that manufacturers might want to make. Bad news if you’re chasing down an elusive piece that 50 other people also want. Being a collector is enjoyable. Trying to be a completist collector gives me a headache sometimes. 😛

August 19th, 2019 - 9:50amActually its selling much less in general, its just companies have altered the way they do business to suit the current market, its a fine line between getting the quantities right admittedly and many get left disappointed . Smaller companies can no longer afford to have large quantities of slow moving or unsold stock tying up money sat in warehouses.
The Big Finish sets are an exception to the rule for all sorts of reasons.

August 19th, 2019 - 2:47pmI do agree with the buiness side, however the national retail outlets have gone Woolworths, Toys r Us, BBC and Forbidden Planet int not online anymore for easy access to the merchandise, even B and M’s are not on the door step in many areas.
I think with repaints, inventive ideas and good packaging, there’s money to be made, but easy to obtain, rather than the profits going to Ebay.
TheDoctorWhoCollector
August 19th, 2019 - 3:53pmI think in today’s climate, with quick turn overs and reduced overheads. The toy industry should look to Dark stores which are laid out like a store but closed to the public, with all the different brands ready to be picked for the customer for the mass market.

August 14th, 2019 - 8:53pm£100+ for a Big Finish sticker and a bit more silver painted on your Dalek? I can’t imagine I’ll lose much sleep over missing out on these.

August 14th, 2019 - 10:57pmDaft question Why don’t Big Finish release more of these.Theres obviously demand.
booboo
August 15th, 2019 - 7:40amYou cant judge anything from this really, the proof will be in how the B&M sets sell.
people are also not taking into account the fact that the B&M sets aren’t available yet
Many people would have bought these who were not interest in the variants but because they haven’t been able to buy them yet from B&M. They were put up for order to early and should have been a least 2 weeks behind the B&M stock if completest wanted a better chance.
prototype dalek
August 15th, 2019 - 9:16amI think your right booboo, to release the sets so early on way before even having a confirmation date for the general release items made this more of a bigger issue, the demand for these sets are a lot higher than normal only due to them being released way in advance of the normal sets. Would have been better for them to be released either 1 week before or after B&M.

August 14th, 2019 - 11:46amMine have arrived! The variations to the paint apps are very subtle.

August 13th, 2019 - 2:51pm£600 on eBay!!!!…this is why I hate limited editions! Why people think fans are stupid enough to pay that much is beyond me it ain’t gonna happen.
Things are only worth that much when they were made 40 years ago and there are not many around anymore, these are £20 toys with slight changes from the B&M versions they are NOT WORTH £600!!

August 13th, 2019 - 7:35pmJust stuck £20 offer in for a laugh, unsurprisingly rejected.

August 13th, 2019 - 1:05pmFirst greedy person ebay, sell each set for £600 each. LOL
Anonymous
August 13th, 2019 - 1:52pmThey stop real fans from getting the chance to buy them. How can a set which costs and is worth £20 be apparently worth £600? Vintage items and stock is an investment, cheap toys are not. What greedy silly people.

August 13th, 2019 - 2:01pmI’m the same booboo, mine being delivered tomorrow too – delivered to work, on the day i’m not there! oh well.

August 13th, 2019 - 7:25pmThere will always be greedy opportunists on the lookout , more so than the genuine collectors but thats how it goes. I,m sure they will have a long wait, If thats the price they are wanting, give it 6 months or so and they will barely beable to give it away. There just waiting for the right mug to come along, don,t fall for it.definitely not worth it. Lets just get those other 5 sets in stock. Thats all i want.

August 13th, 2019 - 9:14amMy sets have arrived. They are nice. The differences are indeed hardly noticeable. Although they eye on my 7th Doctor Dalek is just the standard colour…

August 13th, 2019 - 9:16amAlso the have a different Big Finish sticker on the front. Not that shiny limited edition sticker.

August 13th, 2019 - 10:08amno getting ours until tomorrow, even though i was probably one of the first to order them

August 13th, 2019 - 11:14amSomebody is selling the individual sets for £600 each on eBay and says that they’ll be a “good investment” and will “only go up in price” – it’s a real shame that this thing has to happen. Order them and appreciate them – why try and sell them for ridiculous prices. A real shame this is.
booboo
August 13th, 2019 - 11:16amthat’s no investment
prototype dalek
August 13th, 2019 - 11:38amThey’ll fine that they will have them for a long time. No doubt these sets will be like past variants such as the Destiny of the dalek set standard and signed edition, 3.75″ wave 1 and chase set and the Time Crash set and UK 100 set, all worth just a bit over the general release set. The only thing they have going for them is that the mass market versions are to be released, in a few months they’ll worth less than £60 each.

August 13th, 2019 - 12:03pmI missed the DPD delivery of the Big Finish Dalek sets, ahh well, something to look forward to tomorrow 😀

August 13th, 2019 - 12:51pmHow come yours aren’t coming until tomorrow Booboo? Apparently the 7th Doctor Dalek has a white eye but mine is still in the boxe and its virtually impossible to tell.

August 13th, 2019 - 2:39pmYeah my 7th doctor dalek definitely has a blue eye.
A4geek
August 13th, 2019 - 2:50pmBlue eye on my seventh and war doctor Daleks. The one in the eighth looks white. Be interesting to compare them with the sets in B&M.
Bundy
August 13th, 2019 - 8:51pmIt is quite bizzare the limited edition BF versions have a simple sticker on them, whereas the mass-market versions have a lovely gold embossed Limited Edition sticker!
I’m happy I got them for the novelty factor, but if I’d missed out I’d not have lost any sleep as the differences are so subtle and as has been pointed out on this thread, the end results do not align with BF artwork.
I doubt the £600 price is serious, I expect it is to avoid people placing false bids like last time the scalpers were selling stock. This way you have to put forward an offer and the scalper can check your account to see if it has a history or is brand new.
Because they are rare I can see these sets having a premium over whatever the resale value of the B&M sets is, but I don’t expect the B&M stuff to go for much more than +£10 over cost, and don’t think on that most people would pay a further premium of +£20 for these as they are so similar.
Anonymous
August 12th, 2019 - 11:32pmSo is there 150 7th Doctors, 150 8th Doctor’s and then 150 war doctors
Or is there 150 sets? So only 50 of each set?
booboo
August 13th, 2019 - 8:01am150 of each, so 150 sets of 3, totaling 450 individual packs

August 12th, 2019 - 7:46pmBig Finish are asking on their Facebook page, what other characters based on their audios we’d like see brought out in action figure form.
Anonymous
August 12th, 2019 - 9:58pmNothing to get excited about. We wont see more until late 2020 now. Its early days and unique figures are huge costs. More likel we will get more repaints, not a bad thing but lets keep expectations real
Som’s of Skaro
August 13th, 2019 - 7:37amYes. I would like a Davros in imperial livery, from The Juggernaughts and I don’t mind waiting
Ollie
August 13th, 2019 - 9:38amThat is a great shout – with the robotic hand too if possible. They could do a Sixth Doctor with the red/white checked waistcoat from ‘Trial’ to go with it.
I like the Black Dalek Supreme with white spots on the front of ‘Daleks Amongst Us’ – that one would be simple to do with a repaint of a 60s Dalek sculpt.
Gareth Pugh
August 13th, 2019 - 10:29amNot a BF one, but one ‘easy’ (well, I say that but I’m not the best expert to judge!) tweak for 2020 – if the occasional new head sculpt is now in scope – would be a Gunfighters First Doc with cowboy hat…

August 8th, 2019 - 9:23pmI couldn’t see this posted, so apologies if I’m duplicating but Al on GB has confirmed the BF variants
“Some are subtle and some not so …but they are all small changes not major ones ..
Thing of Guile Dalek- has silver mid slats (not gold) but no change to the War Doctor
7th Doctor Has a darker colour jersey and Scarf and the Dalek has a different eye colour
The 8th doctor has Black not brown boots and there are minor differences on the Dalek”

August 9th, 2019 - 12:59pmno disrespect but what evidence is there of these “variants” being accurate. Big finish themselves haven’t got images and they haven’t got out to the public???
I know the variations are to be subtle but these are a little too subtle, think there might be some assumptions
booboo
August 9th, 2019 - 1:23pmbecause Alasdair Dewar, the person who develops the figures at character as said so and he listed the variations as above.
150 of each set.
Anonymous
August 10th, 2019 - 11:33amIt’s strange that the Big Finish variants seem to be less accurate than the B&M ones when they are adapting there own material. After inspecting some covers it’s clear that Dark eyes McGann has brown shoes, the dalek scientist has gold mid slats and the assault dalek has the same eyestalk colour as the standard dalek… makes me feel better that I missed the chance to grab them now. I am curious as to what the seventh doctor will look like in a darker shade though, that sounds nice
Bundy
August 12th, 2019 - 8:56pmThey are ‘interesting’ choices for variations, but then I guess they were pretty limited as to what they could do. The other thing of course is BF are in a position to include these variations in future CD covers.
