Doctor Who’s missing serial The Faceless Ones will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and SteelBook on 16th March 2020.
BBC Studios is pleased to announce that The Faceless Ones will be the next animated Doctor Who release, filling a gap in missing content. Following the success of The Power of the Daleks, Shada and The Macra Terror, The Faceless Ones will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and as an exclusive steelbook next year.
The Faceless Ones is the mostly missing eighth serial of the fourth season of Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in six weekly parts from April to May 1967. Starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, the story concerns a sinister race of identity-stealing aliens known as the Chameleons.
Only two of the six episodes are held in the BBC film archives with snippets of footage and still images existing from the other four. Fortunately, off-air recordings of the soundtrack also still exist, making the animation of a complete serial possible once again.
The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour and high definition and will include the following exclusive special features:
- Photographic reconstruction of the story, including surviving footage of episodes 1 & 3
- Audio commentary on episodes 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6
- ‘Making of the animated series’
- Camera script PDF’s
- Surviving film fragments from the story
- x5 ‘Easter Egg’ surprises
- Coming Soon Fury from the Deep trailer

March 9th, 2020 - 8:59amDoes that mean the Zoom will be dispatching them soon? Also is that the general one or the steelbook? Sorry just trying to work out if I should order as I’m between two addresses and don’t wanna miss it

March 4th, 2020 - 11:15pmAside from the case, does the limited edition have anything the regular edition does not? Shada and The Macra Terror had bonus discs.
Gordon
March 4th, 2020 - 11:35pmNo nothing extra. Not a surprise after the reaction to the macra bonus disc. There really isn’t anything they could have realistically added without complaining about how pointless the disc is

March 4th, 2020 - 5:35pmWhoa whoa whoa! The Faceless Ones has a scene at Gatwick, where we see a WANTED poster of Sacha Dhawan’s Master on a wall? Are you kidding me? That won’t be controversial in the slightest!
Gordon
March 4th, 2020 - 5:50pmYeah there is a fair few Easter eggs placed throughout the episodes. That is only 1 of them. Some of them are quite funny
Gordon
March 4th, 2020 - 9:14pmIt’s also a bit of fun and it doesn’t take away from the main story
Lee
March 6th, 2020 - 12:13amAlthough I really like the animations and am looking forward to the Faceless Ones on Dvd I also think it is very, very controversial ! To put the Masters face or any characters face on what is a traditional episode, even though it is an animation, I know a lot of fans won’t be keen on this, though I do appreciate that at times adding a subtle banner or a sign can be a nice idea, if it isn’t used too often and I hope this type of Easter egg, Doesn’t set a future president with the on going range !
Gordon
March 6th, 2020 - 1:22amHardly anybody seemed to think adding a picture of Delgado on the preview back in October was controversial. Funny how adding a picture of Sasha just underneath Delgado all of a sudden makes it controversial. It’s never going to be exactly like the original so why not have fun with some Easter eggs. As long as the Easter eggs don’t overshadow the story (and the faceless ones Easter eggs don’t) it’s all good fun. And that is what i feel is missing from fandom right now. A sense of fun. It’s a silly tv show not something that should be taken 100percent deadly seriously. Doctor who is supposed to be fun. They tried being strict as possible for the 2013-14 animations and sales just didn’t justify it.

March 11th, 2020 - 1:17pmI’m a different Lee from the one above and Lee D. I used to post pretty regular, but I haven’t posted on here since the Season 23 boxset was released. Now I’ve come back and there’s 2 others Lee’s too! So I’m going to start using Lee B from now on!
Anyway, waffle aside, mine has also been sent to warehouse too Gordon, so I’m looking forward to the weekend.

March 4th, 2020 - 3:29pmThe surviving episodes of the faceless ones will not have new restorations I hear. Most of the budget went on the animation so it’s not a suprise

March 3rd, 2020 - 8:56amThe Faceless Ones just popped up on Amazon Digital/Google Play/Itunes as an early release. Episodes in colour and black and white, for £13.49 Amazon and Google, £14.99 Itunes. No special features mind, which is why most people of course, will prefer the disc, but I just thought i’d mention it.

March 3rd, 2020 - 9:23amGreat stuff.

March 3rd, 2020 - 10:20amAlthough Amazon and Itunes will probably add features (minus commentaries of course), on the day of the disc release.

March 3rd, 2020 - 12:21pmJust finished it in colour. Think it’s a step up over macra. The plane flying off into space is the stand out scene of it. Really good. Very polished overall. Don’t think anything was cut. The story is a bit of a runaround but at least it’s decent. If you aren’t a fan of the macra animation this probably won’t win you over. There are changes but it still tells the story in a good way. Watching an existing episode animated is a bit odd at first but I’m surprised at how well it works. With it ending on a cliffhanger it would be a crime if the next animation from this team wasn’t evil. I’m itching for it after seeing the end of faceless ones

March 3rd, 2020 - 2:08pmThey also accidentally left the test card of the start of the coloured ep3

March 3rd, 2020 - 3:51pmI think i’ll wait to see exactly what special features wind up on Amazon/Itunes before I decide between one of those and disc.
As for the animation-i’m glad to hear it is at least, on a par with Macra. That’s a step up from Power, and infinitely preferable to having ghastly telesnaps. Your review is encouraging anyways; I was wavering about buying this, silly as it sounds, because of the sour taste in my mouth left by the news of Sunday’s travesty, but i’m actually looking forward to this again.
Gordon
February 29th, 2020 - 8:20pmHearing good things about the animation from those that went to the bfi today. Not confirmed but from what I heard nothing has been cut with the exception of Samantha Briggs hat which will probably annoy some. Some masterful Easter eggs to look out for too.

February 23rd, 2020 - 6:54pmIncidentally…
I’ll try posting this here, as a public service announcement, although I imagine the mods will remove it as it doesn’t relate to the article in question (and given that this IS their site, that’s fair enough).
For those of you who didn’t already know; you can listen to a selection of Doctor Who Big Finish audios, for free, on Spotify. Just type in ‘Doctor Who Big Finish’ in Search, and, voila.

February 23rd, 2020 - 6:41pmBought digital versions of Power and Macra, as I wasn’t bothered about the missing special features

January 19th, 2020 - 11:48amWithin the next month I’d imagine. It’s listed in zavi for the 9th of March. The macra terrors cover and disc contents weren’t listed till about 3 weeks before

June 28th, 2019 - 12:12pmFor all those that were still doubters, the latest DWM has confirmed that the release will come with the existing episodes 1 & 3, further restored, so it is likely that these will be the first official B&W episodes to be upscaled to HD.

June 14th, 2019 - 10:02amI love those animations, so I am super happy they are doing more of them. Also it’s cool they are animating the episodes that are here, the consistency is fine. I have only one problem, and my spider-sense is tingling here, that they will put those animations in the Blu-Ray Seasons Collections one day.
Dan
June 8th, 2019 - 6:42pmPersonally I like to view my Hartnell’s and Troughton’s in black and white, so I’m really hoping the option to view the animation in black and white is provided, as it was on The Macra Terror.

June 8th, 2019 - 11:14pmI expect/hope they’ll give an option of b&w vs colour.
I’ll only watch Power in B&W but like Macra in colour.
For this I’m not sure!
Delighted they are animating more and happy to spend ££ to support this range.
Maybe one day Fury or Evil?

June 7th, 2019 - 12:16pmI wish these online stores would just stop letting people review products before they’re even released, full stop.
It swings both ways, you get people downvoting for stupid reasons and you also get people giving 5 stars, saying it’ll be the best thing since sliced bread, before they’ve even seen it.
Even if I really like a film, TV programme, book, whatever, I still wouldn’t give a review until I’ve watched, read, used the product.
Never really understood why reviews are allowed before a product is even released??
Just open the review system after the product has been released.
I’ve actually stopped reading a lot of reviews online now. The ones who give a balanced, detailed, honest review are few and far between these days anyway.

June 6th, 2019 - 6:45amGot the steelbook preordered, I’m really enjoying the steelbooks from the animations. I already have the Power and Macra steelbooks. The downside is I know they won’t reveal the artwork for months. I don’t mind all six episode being animated, I’m sure the surviving episodes will be on it and it will be neat to compare the orginal versions to their animated counterparts.

June 5th, 2019 - 12:31pmFirst time commenting, so please be nice :). Big 80’s fan who tend to collect. DVD wise I completed the classics and continued when REVISITATIONS came along, so this new release is a must! The only way I know this story is through soundtrack and LOST IN TIME so, happy as Larry.
The logo doesn’t bother me. I reverse the covers. The Big Finish stuff changing logos didn’t bother me and I frequent them more often than the DVDs.
Shouldn’t we simply be happy that this is getting done when we could be sitting here with nothing?

June 5th, 2019 - 12:49pmto be fair i think most people are happy, some just don’t like change ( i didn’t when they changed the logo on the VHS range, hated it at the time)
Ive watched the 2 missing episodes 20 times over so having it all animated in one viewing is fine by me, others will have the option to switch between episodes I’m sure if the want to
Lee
June 5th, 2019 - 3:34pmThe logo has never bothered me either. Not sure why people get stressed out about it.
Let’s face it, the logo on the VHS/DVDs didn’t match the particular era of every story anyway.
While I wasn’t a big fan of series 10 or 11, having the S11 branding on these Blu-rays isn’t something I feel the need to moan about. Each to their own though.

June 5th, 2019 - 10:09amI can’t believe I’m wasting time writing this but to all the people who are complaining and telling other people to stop complaining chill out a bit yeah? I understand people are passionate and I too get annoyed when my OCD gets triggered by something like the wrong Doctor Who logo on the spine but I hate when people speak for me… your opinions or views are not shared by everyone so stop thinking your the centre of the universe…
(Now onto what I wanted to write…) I’m really happy they decided to animate the Faceless Ones. I highly doubt they will animate the Highlanders but if they decide to go in chronological order the Evil of the Daleks is next and Fury from the Deep could be in 2023!

Who rules
June 4th, 2019 - 5:48pmJust read an article by director Ron Howard. In it he blames star wars trolls for solo underperforming and I have to say I agree with him. When you read some of the reviews and comments they bare little relation to the actual film. Virtually everyone I know who actually saw the movie loved it. I thought it was a great heist movie and stood on its own well. And I now fear that doctor who is going the same way. Effectively the trolls killed future star wars films and if we true fans aren’t careful the same will happen with who. I saw so many newspaper stories that were generated by vindictive trolls, stories that went against facts of the success of new who, it’s highest ratings for a decade, it’s award nominations and the high critical acclaim and against many positive responses from fans. But unfortunately those few who shout or I should say, type the loudest for whatever reasons made better headlines than the truth.
These DVDs are the same please wait before complaining. At least wait for the content to be announced before complaining about what is or isn’t on. But by far the best thing to do is wait until it is released, wait until you have watched the DVD. Then people can make a sound, reasoned, informed decision on their opinion. Why am i posting this comment? Because my partner has just showed me a tweet stating that this is ‘the worst DVD ever, dreadful animation, rubbish extras and it should never get made’ i truly despair of fandom. Personally i have reservations, but I’m still hopeful and I’m looking forward to this release. Stay chilled everyone…
booboo
June 4th, 2019 - 5:57pmTotally agree with you on solo, loved it, but could easily have not bothered with it based on poor reviews and negative vibes from the minuet they announced it.
Having said that its star Wars, This is Doctor Who and most of the negativity is confined to forums and will have little impact.
If you read through most people are very positive with a few questioning why they have done all six episodes but that easily explained because of the USA input and the wider newish market.
Anonymous
June 4th, 2019 - 6:00pmSome people didn’t watch solo because they didn’t like the previous star wars movie and it underperformed cause a lot of it was refilled so more money had to be spent on it, there were also many reviews that were positive trolling, so I think it’s unfair to blame it solely on people who might genuinely dislike it, some comments by critics on Godzilla seem unrelated to the film, but the audience score is much higher on rotten tomatoes. I’m tired of people blaming each other but I do agree with you about the negative comments about this DVD release- I’m ecstatic!!!! And to be fair to past series, series 11, it’s average was based on less episodes, a different day, interest in a new doctor (a female). I’ll make my judgement on it’s popularity after series 12 airs
Who rules
June 4th, 2019 - 6:05pmI understand why they’ve done it, and the little clips from episode one look good. Commercially you couldn’t get away with broadcasting two original black and white episodes with 4 episodes in colour in America. So yes it’s perfectly reasonable. Just surprising that the budget is there to do it. I’m completely open minded about this. I really hope I enjoy it and i intend to try and enjoy it. One thing that’s interesting is that if as someone says they are trying to get a season 4 bluray set together by doing another one from that season this means we only have Highlanders and evil left. But season 4 incorporates the final two hartnell tales. Have to say I’d love a smugglers animation.

June 4th, 2019 - 9:52pm“If we true fans aren’t careful…”
So anyone that disagrees with you or dislikes something isn’t a real fan and is just a troll? Sure there are some people out there with malicious intent, but to start calling everyone who doesn’t mindlessly follow things in exactly the way you do not real fans is an absolutely disgusting attitude for anyone to have.
It’s not just trolls we have to look out for, the gatekeepers can be just as destructive. Criticism has a valid place, treating people as if they are inferior because they won’t buy every release or see every movie or play every game makes you no better than those demanding everything sucks.
The vast majority of people will be somewhere in the middle, and the two extreme ends just drive people out because one side is saying you’re an idiot for enjoying it and the other side is saying you aren’t a real fan if you don’t mindlessly enjoy every last thing. Let’s be reasonable human beings and have a civilised talk about things without the name calling.

June 4th, 2019 - 10:58pmAlso people didn’t really want a solo movie, just saying.
Anonymous
June 4th, 2019 - 11:27pmThe failure of ‘Solo’ at the box office was perfectly understandable, I feel. Lucasfilm fired the original director 70% of the way through filming and Ron Howard was brought in to salvage the mess. The script wasn’t great and it was riddled with identity/SJW agenda pushing (an overtly feminist robot, Lando being hinted at being pansexual, Emilia Clarke’s character having to be the strong female who defeats the bad guy and saves Han, rather than Han beating the bad guy, despite being the movie’s main character). Plus ‘The Last Jedi’ was such a disappointment and a convoluted mess of a movie, it’s no wonder there was such a huge backlash and ‘Solo’ bore the brunt of that. I also don’t think there was really a clamour from fans for a Han Solo movie, compared to say the much mooted Obi-Wan movie, which many fans want to see get made, with Ewan McGregor returning and being set between episodes III & IV.
Back on topic with ‘The Faceless Ones’, I’m so delighted this story is being animated! Sure, it’s not quite up there with ‘Evil of the Daleks’ or ‘Fury from the Deep’, but it’s still a very enjoyable story and it’s significant because it’s the final story for Ben and Polly. Really looking forward to this release and I’ve pre-ordered it already.
Who rules
June 5th, 2019 - 3:31pmWhat is the point of commenting… I never said that anyone who disagrees is automatically a troll. Please read carefully before shouting me down. I am a positive fan, but it seems these days you are only allowed to agree if you hate jodie/moffat/chibnall etc. I don’t. I love all three but apparently I’m not allowed to say so unless I accept being told I’m an idiot. I know most comments are positive on this site boo boo, something which is heartening. I have no problem with criticism, my views of the macra animation are here for all to see, but I have never talked down to anyone who likes it, never said it should not be bought or even that it should not have been made. The solo thing is a perfect example of this whole situation. Did you know boo boo that there is a petition to Disney asking for a second solo movie? Rotten tomatoes had to change their algorithms due to deliberate negative posting designed to reduce films scores. Solo suffered from this but it was captain marvel gaining thousands of negative posts before it was even released that caused the change. Post this or don’t it’s reaching a point where I’m just not going to bother. Even when you answer a question from someone it just seems like seconds before someone will have a go.

June 5th, 2019 - 8:07pmOkay who rules.
Me
June 5th, 2019 - 10:18pmSo I see there’s a problem with the whole thing
It’s to do with the audience of it. Doctor who has always had this problem. Series 9 was too heavy with references and more for fans than members of the public. Series 10 tried to balance both but gave up trying to be a reboot and became for the fans. Series 11 was more for the ordinary than the fan.
So with this animation you got a In Colour 16:9 6 part animation of a party missing story with 2 surviving episodes. I see why people think it’s a waste of money to animate two episodes that exist. But consistency matters for the average member of the public. And they will be confused if they showed the surviving episode 1 and 3 in the middle of a fancy animation. I get that this animation is for old fans but also trying to include new viewers so they are sorta trying to please both here and not doing it completely on both sides.

June 4th, 2019 - 2:15pmI love The Faceless Ones and will really love having this in my collection. Recently I have been watching the series right from the beginning. I would much rather ave stand alone discs for all stories. It’s so annoying to transfer from one medium to another. Having said that, as annoying as it is, it’s not a huge imposition. I can’t stand the recon episodes. I know that someone has painstakingly and lovingly put these together, but unfortunately they just don’t grab my imagination. I still watch them over plain audio only, but don’t really enjoy them. Personal preference. So I welcome the animated episodes and yes it would be nice to have the option to watch the live action instead of the animation is a preference for me, but by no means a necessity. Life goes on wether there is a magical button or not. If they cut scenes though, that’s something I really don’t approve of it. I won’t boycott, but will be extremely unimpressed.

June 4th, 2019 - 12:56pmI am so happy about the announcement and did they say that they are animated episode 1 and 3 which is they are surviving episodes and why are they animated those surviving 2 episodes and they should animated 4 episodes not all six of them.

June 4th, 2019 - 1:12pmIt gives bbc America who part funded it a consistent product to broadcast on bbc America. Having a mix of black and white 4:3 and colour 16:9 wouldn’t be a consistent product. June 4th, 2019 - 12:44pmNow that Amazon have screwed every preorder by taking money five days following any order, they might be disappointed by preorder figures.
It used to be payment taken on shipping but no longer.

June 4th, 2019 - 1:03pmit still is in their T&C
Payment for your pre-order is taken when your item is dispatched to you. If you choose to pay by credit or debit card, please ensure that the expiry date of your card is after the release day.

June 4th, 2019 - 1:18pmAmazon policy is the same as it was. Payment on despatch as far as I can tell.

June 4th, 2019 - 6:01pmI had this problem for the first time just over a week ago.
I preordered the Evil of the Daleks vinyl from Amazon and was surprised to see I had a pending debit almost immediately. I contacted them, and was told at first that it was “just an authorisation ” and wouldn’t be processed. This was immediately suspicious as this has never been Amazon’s policy and had never happened before, but the following day the full amount was actually charged and taken from my account.
Understandably incensed, I rang them twice to ask what was going on, both times there was a long delay while the assistant “spoke to their supervisor ” then came back to tell me it was now their policy to charge immediately for pre orders. I demanded a refund, which was applied straight away, but came off the phone and scoured their site for any reference to this new ‘policy’,to no avail.
After I got paid I nervously tried the pre order again and have not been charged a penny.
Bit of a mystery though.

June 4th, 2019 - 6:53pmThere was a lot of anger about it at places like Blu-Ray.Com as people like to make sure they get preorders in for limited releases from companies such as Arrow and Powerhouse Films only to find they’d been charged in full for something not out for weeks or even months.

June 4th, 2019 - 7:18pmI buy very little from Amazon now, just certain authors I can’t get elsewhere, even those I wait until they are in stock before ordering. It just knocks on the head any preordering I might have considered. I used to use book depository, they took payment straight away but I had so many problems I closed my account down. I had 15 preorders with them and they cancelled everyone of them saying they couldn’t get them. A day after cancellation each book was back online at a higher price. They never responded to emails, only giving generic answers. Since 2014 Amazon has been appalling. Their customer service is non-existent. Had so many issues with orders. I use waterstones now combined with marketplace sellers on Amazon. The few items I order direct from Amazon equal a small fraction of what I used to order.

June 4th, 2019 - 8:05pmIf the price of The Macra Terror was anything to go by, you should get the lowest price on release day anyway.

June 4th, 2019 - 9:08pmI feel they should rate the other missing stories in Season 4 & release them as A big box set like the revisitations box sets were.
Any thoughts BooBoo?

June 4th, 2019 - 9:25pmAmazon’s new pre order policy is VERY true. I had the exact same experience with Evil of the Daleks. They also told me it was “authorisation” but then the whole amount went out. Same as everyone else I cancelled. It’s ridiculous. They said it was because they don’t want any delays in case of card issues near the release date. I’d rather it be a day or so late than pay for it 6 weeks in advance!

June 5th, 2019 - 12:24amI didn’t know that about Amazon pre-orders. That’s just put me off pre-ordering on Amazon now. I wonder what happens to the pre-order price guarantee now then? Does it just get refunded to your card later? Or are they going to drop that too?
