Return to Planet Krynoid
The killer plants spread their roots in three horrifying new audio episodes – Planet Krynoid: Survivors, featuring Paul McGann, Nicola Walker and Tamsin Grieg, is released today.
The Krynoids – the carnivorous and highly dangerous alien plants first introduced in 1976 Doctor Who TV story The Seeds of Doom – return today in the second volume of the full-cast audio horror series Planet Krynoid.
In the three-episode box set Survivors, the remaining residents of Sunlight, a colony in space devastated by Krynoid attacks, desperately fight to stay alive. But there are many dangers on the path – not only from the fearsome foliage that threatens the survivors, but also from their equally ruthless fellow humans.
And, the box set’s second episode flashes back a hundred years to reveal what happened to Sunlight’s first colony. This story guest stars Paul McGann and Nicola Walker as the Eighth Doctor and his companion Liv Chenka, as well as TV icon Tamsin Grieg (Green Wing, Black Books, Riot Women) as Overseer Amesus Vail.
The Worlds of Doctor Who – Planet Krynoid: Survivors is now available to purchase for just £19.99 (download to own) or £29.99 (download to own + collector’s edition 3-disc CD box set), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com. Please note: the collector’s edition CD box set is strictly limited to 1,000 copies and will not be repressed.
This box set comprises three horrifying audio episodes:
The Hunt by Jonathan S Powell
Blackmailed by the unscrupulous Raynor Cross, Sunlight survivors Tiro Hart and Letty Hodan must battle the icy remains of the life they left behind. But they are not the only ones with their sights set on a pod.
The Harrow by Georgia Cook
Nobody knows what really happened to Station One, Verdana’s first, doomed colony. But after materialising in the path of a Krynoid, the Doctor and Liv are about to find out.
The Harvest by Jonathan Morris
When a band of survivors reach a mysterious settlement, they are promised food, shelter and harmony. But deliverance in Greenhaven comes at a price – and Father Nature is ready to collect.
Planet Krynoid: Survivors’ first and third episodes bring back several of the first volume’s ensemble cast: Nye Occomore as Tiro Hart, Em Prendergast as Letty Hodan, Sarah Whitehouse as Maggie Hart, Ian Conningham as Fletcher Hart, Melody Chikakane Brown as Bryn Forrester. They also introduce new cast members Karl Theobald, Simon Kane, Lara Lemon, Juliet Aubrey, Christopher Ragland, Jack Myers, Abbie Andrews, and Angus Wright.
The second episode, alongside Paul McGann, Nicola Walker and Tamsin Grieg, stars David Hounslow, Becky Wright, David Ault, Gina Bellman, and Jonathan S Powell.
Writer Georgia Cook said: “I love the myriad of different ways that the Krynoid can be a monster. There’s the body horror aspect, the transformative aspect, and it can just eat you! And then, it can also control you through your mind. So it’s kind of a triple threat! With my story, I remember the producer Jon saying, minimal body horror, we’re focusing on the horror of the plants as monsters in their own right.
“Writing for the Eighth Doctor and Liv was great fun, because I’ve not written for those two before. Liv is such a steely personality and really can be in charge. Even with the Doctor gone, she can hold her own.”
Nicola Walker, who reprises her role as companion Liv Chenka from the Eighth Doctor Adventures series, said: “I like these stories when it gets very odd, with plants growing and killing us! But, you can draw real-world parallels too – it’s otherworldly and imaginary, except there’s something in there that has the bite of truth.”
