I tried posting this earlier but I think the link to Musk’s cesspit got it zapped. Paul V has said on social media that he’s started using AI with this release, not to the extent of the Who sets but if you watch the trailer in 1080p you can spot it at times. He posted on Sept 12th if you want to hunt down the source.

No. Not for upscaling. But AI diffusion has been used to remove noise introduced by videotape and to add detail back. AI tracking has also been used to track objects so they can be graded separately from the background e.g. actors keyed against backgrounds for teleport sequences.— Paul Vanezis (@PaulVanezis) September 12, 2026

      @The Unlicensed Physician

Many thanks for highlighting Paul Vanezis’ Twitter reply to the Ai in Blakes 7 Blu-rays.

While I understand through friends involved in the tv post production industry that ‘lifting’ digital noise, and placing it back onto the finished shots is a regular process with modern filmmaking, as a means of blending in visual effects, cgi and the like – for Vanezis to be using this method to ‘denoise’ raw video tape footage of Blakes 7 is… Very odd.

I personally have seen what broadcast tapes from the BBC Archive, from the 1980’s actually look like (digitized as playable from a computer) some of which have been sent to me by an ex employee of the BBC. If anyone’s interested to see what native video tape footage is supposed to look like, reply below and I’ll do what I can to send screenshots.

Having seen what I’ve seen – unless the Blakes 7 footage is physically damaged and/or deteriorated in any way, though highly unlikely by the 1980’s, given it hasn’t as poor archiving reputation as Doctor Who – then I cannot find any way of justifying why Vanezis is going this far to permanently alter the original tape footage in this way by erasing original picture quality detail – when these broadcast masters as-is are perfectly watchable, more than ever before thanks to the much higher bitrate limits on Blu-ray. You should just be able to sit back and watch the broadcast masters as-was – and *then* if Paul Vanezis wants to mess around with DNR’ing the picture with AI algorithms then make that the ‘special edition’.

I get this constant feeling more than ever that absolutely nothing is being taken or board or listened to when the technical feedbacks, the forum discussions, and even the Amazon + YouTube reviews showing just how devastating and destructive AI is when slathered onto these SD masters.

I’m also noticing more and more people comparing this AI obsession altering classic television to the ‘loudness wars’ of CD ‘remasters’, wherby the audio dynamic range is deliberately being crushed to oblivion because of this needless obligation to ‘modernize the sound’ of many 1960’s – 1980’s albums.

There is this, arrogant assumption by the people at the very top of the ‘restoration’ pyramid that believe it okay to forever change the look, feel, and sound of this historic media, of which we should be preserving in it’s original form as best as we possibly can for future generations to experience in as near the exact same way as we did, but moreso closer to the generations before us.

What’s topped this all for me recently is the leaked HMV stock list implying a huge catalogue of Doctor Who DVDs (pre AI Blu-ray) will be soon out of print altogether. So unless you’re going for the second hand market (which is already spiking now with CEX charging £5+ per individual dvd) then your only choice of physical media for Classic Doctor Who will be the AI + DNR slop Collection sets.

Dark times ahead ladies and gents. Grab the dvds while you still can.

Well this certainly adds to the theory and rumours that it’s inclusion is being enforced by the higher ups.

As I understand it it’s not generative ai in the same vain in what Crocker has done for the doctor who ones.

Looking at the brief footage in the trailer on my 43 inch tv if that is what we are getting in the finished trailer it looks very watchable . Nothing as egregious as the doctor who s13 and 21. Certainly prefer it to the previous 20 plus year old dvds. If we can get the doctor who ones to look like these I’m sure there would be less complaining, However I’d prefer that it wasn’t used/enforced though.

Having asked around about the supposed out of print list well some are going out of print due to having been sucseeded by special editions but the majority will be a print to order option for retailers. Considering the age of some of them (some approaching 25 years) I’m very suprised a lot of these aren’t already out of print

Paul V has said on social media that he’s using AI processing on this release. He’s not using it to the extent they do on Who, but if you watch the trailer at 1080 resolution you can start to see it popping up on some shots. Even for noise reduction, AI isn’t quite there yet.

Yes Ricky I never liked the 6th Doctor, infact he was the only Doctor I never really liked. But it goes to show what a Good Actor he was to come across as unlikeable to alot of Dr Who Fans, when in reality he’s such a Lovely bloke.

It’s funny. I really like colin Baker, I like his performance as the doctor, but I don’t like his era that much. It’s the storylines that let him down for me.

    • Snowman

      September 15th, 2026 - 8:33pm

Yes Bookcollector, has Ricky just mentioned Colin was abit “Marmite” you either loved him or disliked him as the Doctor. I know some Fans liked in as the Doctor. He was always abit too Abrasive and big headed for my liking and to be honest it was always abit of a shock to the System after all the previous Doctors.

    • bookcollector

      September 15th, 2026 - 9:27pm

I had a slightly different take on his performance. It felt more theatrical than real. He was bombastic rather than genuinely arrogant. The writing certainly help though. Interestingly I felt the same with Davison. Great doctor. Weak writing and weak companions. Nyssa was great but massively underused in place of weaker characters. Tegan just whinged incessantly, I never understood why she stayed as she made it plain she didn’t enjoy it. Adric was written as an unpleasant misogynist, although more his age than perhaps genuine thoughts, turlough was incredibly untrustworthy then we get peri who was good. So like the baker era, good doctor but I wasn’t to impressed by the writing, particularly after saward took over as script editor.

This looks to be an amazing set as usual! My favourite season of B7. This is turning out to be an expensive winter with the 2 Who standard editions just announced as well!
I’m guessing we’ll get Steven Pacey & Glynis Barber in conversation on the S4 set and tributes to Michael Keating and Peter Tuddenham? Would be amazed (but very happy) if we got anything with Josette Simon. I wonder if we’ll be getting anything representing David Maloney on the Doctor Who sets – S6 would seem to be the contender if they plan on doing anything.

I do Remember watching Michael Keating been interviewed on Look North while on location in Patley bridge. I also remember seeing photos of Dayna and Tarrant in The Yorkshire Evening Post , which my late mother worked for. But wasn’t till I saw The Radio Times for the first episode, that i discovered that Blake and Jenna had gone and that there was two new characters that had replaced them. How different the world was back then .

@David You do realise it isnt the same team working on Doctor Who, besides Blake’s 7 had only 4 Series to restore for these releases, not 26. (Wether you like it or not, they may be spacing out the remaining seasons of Doctor Who to give more time for the remaining 60s Seasons)

    • Gordon

      September 12th, 2026 - 9:25am

But they are working on both doctor who and Blake’s 7! It’s almost like people can work on multiple projects at the same time! Plus it’s not a waste of their time and money as people want this! I certainly do and looking at the comments I’m certainly not the only one! As for it being a waste of their money well the previous 2 releases were profitable (only the first 1 was a guarantee as it was testing the market). Not every release is aimed specifically at you and you know what that’s ok. I’ve no interest in the circuit breaker stuff but that’s ok as I know there are other fans excited for it

Not sure the OP really understands how media and entertainment products businesses and their budgets work. Although they share a fair bit of personnel in making these sets (and good for us they do, as they are extremely talented 🙂 as we know from the Who Collection sets), budget allocated to the B7 collections won’t have been ‘stolen’ or diverted from DW sets. And besides, today (Sun 13th Sept) we’ve had Lee Binding’s colour tease post for the next DW Collection set – I doubt that would have happened yet if we weren’t getting the release this side of year-end.

I seem to remember that the original commentaries for s1/2 were pretty good, but for s3/4 were terrible with lots of dead air, do we have any clue as to who will be doing the new ones, I take it Toby will be moderating?

Think project Avalon also had some silences too.

Audio commentary on Rumours of Death with Paul Darrow, Chris Boucher and Jan Chappell

Audio commentary on Death-Watch with Chris Boucher and actress Jacqueline Pearce

Audio commentary on Terminal with Paul Darrow, Jacqueline Pearce, David Maloney and Gareth Thomas

Far too many disc commentaries seemed to involve getting people into the booth and… Well, that was about it. I always hoped they would get her but always knew she would be the hardest to pin down due to how busy she is plus she’s always had a bit of a weird relationship with the show. It’s possible she said no but it’s also possible that she was busy

Steven is a bit of an odd one. I couldn’t think of a reason why he would say no as he always seems happy to talk about it but he was filming a new tv show in Prague for Netflix so its possible he was simply busy during filming or they are holding his appearance as a surprise. Guessing if he’s not available it will be Glynis for the season 4 documentary (she’s briefly in the season 2 release with the Jaqueline Pearce documentary which suggests they may have already filmed something else)

Colin being on the season 3 documentary isn’t too much of a surprise. Colin has a good working relationship with the director Chris chapman who has worked with him numerous times and Chris even wrote a big finish for him. Hopefully he’s also on the commentary as well.
